New York's Finest A thrilling read from beginning to end, I could not put this book down until the very last page. Naomi was a very relatable character. A career woman with a very corrupt secret life, but with undying loyalty to her brother Reggie and their friend and partner in the drug game Damien. The big mystery of who was behind the demise of the organization was a bit comical because of who it was, but was really justified when you look at the whole picture. The story telling was excellent, but the only thing I didn't like was there were really no descriptive details of the main characters physical appearance other than Damien being dark skinned, and Naomi being half black half puerto rican so the reader really doesn't have a good idea of the way they look.
The Final Unfinished Voyage of Jack Aubrey The book has both a copy of the handwritten manuscript, and a typed up version of the work that O'Brian was able to revise before he died. The manuscript has more of the story that O'Brian didn't have time to revise, so about 5 pages are only found in manuscript form, and they aren't typed up. I really wish that the publisher had typed up these last 5 pages of the manuscript, because some of the manuscript is unreadable. The untyped manscript covers a duel, and would really make excellent reading. I'm afraid I don't have Dr. Maturin's ability to decode.
A Christmas Bride Pet groomer Carina Fiore wants nothing more than to confess her feelings to the man she loves. She's drawn to veterinarian Cameron McKenzie's good looks, caring nature and especially his devotion to his young daughter. There's just one problem he's her boss. Putting her heart on the line could cost Rina both her job and their friendship forever. But when a kiss under the mistletoe unlocks the simmering passion between them, Rina and Cameron may just find love for the holidays after all‌.
A Death in the Family
I was astounded when I reread the essay called "Knoxville Summer of 1915" that precedes the rest of the novel. This is one of the most beautiful and most effective pieces of English I have ever come across. Agee describes a child's observation of his neighbors evening activities in their back yard in a subtle sequence of events. The essay mixes dreamy metaphor with detailed observation in a slow, rhythmic description. The child observes the rolled up shirt sleeves of fathers watering their lawn after dinner and then tells himself that now the night is a "blue dew". The genius behind this is how the child makes the transition for detailed observation to poetic descriptions of the entire experience.
A Friend of the Family I am impressed by the way Jewell tells a unique story with issues that are relevant to each of us. The male points of view were comically written and gave me an insight into just what a man might be thinking when he is deciding where a relationship is headed. The only criticism I have of A FRIEND OF THE FAMILY, is that a bit of the information about pregnancy was slightly inaccurate (such as she states that the pregnant character was unable to take any medications, not even Tylenol or a cough lozenge).

A Good Man In the ambitious and masterful final novel of his bestselling trilogy, Guy Vanderhaeghe, returns to the nineteenth century Canadian and American West to explore the final days of one of the world’s last great frontiers. Wesley Case is a former soldier and son of a Canadian lumber baron who sets out into the untamed borderlands between Canada and the United States to escape a dark secret from his past. He settles in Montana where he hopes to buy a cattle ranch, and where he begins work as a liaison between the American and Canadian militaries in an effort to contain the Native Americans’ unresolved anger in the wake of the Civil War. Amidst the brutal violence that erupts between the Sioux warriors and U.S. forces, Case’s plan for a quiet ranch life is further compromised by an unexpected dilemma: he falls in love with the beautiful, outspoken, and recently widowed Ada Tarr. It’s a budding
romance that soon inflames the jealousy of Ada’s quiet and deeply disturbed admirer, Michael Dunne. When the American government unleashes its final assault on the Indians, Dunne commences his own vicious plan for vengeance in one last feverish attempt to claim Ada as his own.
A Skeleton in the Closet A SKELETON IN THE CLOSET is a delightful cozy mystery, New England style. One can almost imagine Kate Lawrence as a younger version of Jessica Fletcher. Her fiery romance with the elegant Armando contributes romance, and her friends and fellow realtors provide glamour and humor. Kate is undergoing a midlife crisis of sorts, which actually grounds her and provides the reader with a glimpse of a middle-aged adventurer. The police appear at appropriate intervals, and life issues pop up to make this a densely packed little read that is both light and entertaining.
A Week in Winter I was so sad to read of Maeve's passing, but so happy to have another beautiful book. I call her books beautiful as you become so involved in the story that you see Ireland, the people in the story and feel a part of the story. this book is another hit and Ireland become's another destination on my bucket list. Blessings to Ms. Binchy's family she will be forever missed.
Blood Storm I read this book.. one or two years ago, my mom gave it to me when I had absolutely nothing to read.. my bookshelf was empty and I needed something to read, and I ended up reading "Blood Storm" by Colin Forbes. Actually, at first she gave me a thriller of Nora Roberts, but I never really got into it, and I like this book much better.
Bronze Summer: The Northland Trilogy Centuries have passed. The wall that Ana's people built has long outlasted her and history has been changed. The British Isles are still one with the European mainland and Doggerland has become a vibrant and rich land. So rich that it has drawn the attention of the Greeks. An invasion is mounted and soon Greek Biremes are grinding ashore on a coastline we never knew and the world will be changed for ever. Stephen Baxter's new series catapults forward from pre-history into the ancient world and charts a new and wonderful story for our world. This is a superb example of Baxter's belief that anything is possible for mankind even making a new world.

Curiosity Killed the Cat Sitter Former Sheriff's Deputy Dixie Hemingway is now a pet sitter in Florida after her Husband and child are tragically killed by an old man who shouldn't have been driving. One of her clients and lover is tragically killed and Dixie gets drawn further and further into the mystery. The book is excellently plotted and deals with modern issues including those particular to Florida such as the elderly who shouldn't be driving but still do with tragic consequences. If you're wondering about the title. It's a direct reference to a newspaper headline that Dixie thinks up. Very good book has a lot of substance and interesting characters to keep the series going for a long time.
Dark Passage Cynthia's heroic efforts at Dunkirk have won her the respect of the Irregulars, but her sharp tongue keeps everyone at a distance. Isolated and very alone at Lackland Abbey over the Christmas holidays, she reluctantly agrees to join Jack Rainford and his family for their celebration event though they're commoners, far below her own noble rank. The warm welcome of the Rainfords makes her feel happier and more accepted than she has ever been. But she can't possibly be falling in love with flirtatious Jack! Can she? Then the Irregulars are drawn into a dangerous attempt to rescue a vitally important French scientist from Nazioccupied France. Tory and Allarde must work together because countless lives are at stake. Disaster strikes and not only is their mission threatened, but their very lives. Can magic and their loyalty to each other help them survive to return home?
Dark Surrender Ever find a twenty just lying on the ground with no one around to claim it? That was what this was, only imagine it was a $100. Totally unexpected pleasant surprise. A real day changer. I thought I was going to spend my time working but then I found this and wasted the day in such a wonderful way. This was an excellent read and such a bargain. Exactly what I would normally search out and end up settling with (and paying more for) something not half as good.
Dead Island Dead Island is a fantastically detailed version of the game. Charactersare fleshed out and it has really enhanced my experience playing the game, which skips over a lot of this. There are many changes from the events in the game, but that only serves to keep the reader guessing. I recommend it, as it is one of the better game adaptations out there.
Dead Spots This book was an awesome read for me. I've already said I don't like love triangles but I found so much other great things that I can give that a pass. The quick pace and fun characters really made this book for me. I enjoyed the first page to the last page and couldn't put this book down. This book is not perfect but every time I pick up a book, I am
not looking for amazing character development or deep and insightful plots I'm looking to be entertained. The characters didn't have sustainable development but they were entertaining and had a little depth. Scarlett managed to come off as a strong and in control with some very human flaws.

Death's Apprentice: A Grimm City Novel Death and his young apprentice Nathaniel enter a club to take away a drug user's soul. However, this time after a decade of assisting his mentor Nathaniel reacts differently as something unknown happens to him. At about the same time Blake the wraith kills skinheads who attacked the rag men and Hank the seven foot tall and seemingly as wide hit man destroys a crack house. Soon these two essences join Nathaniel in leading a revolt on several plains against the devil.
Dizzy Dizzy is an easy, fun read. Is there angst-yes, but it only undescores the organic relationship between Dylan and Ziah. These two young adults have emotions that run deep, and form an unlikely alliance. Both have issues and at first glance, are polar opposites. Dylan enjoys parties and one night stands. Ziah values the stability of her boyfriend-she likes to play it safe. When Ziah's life comes crashing down, things get interesting between these two! I really enjoyed this book.
Enough Rope Those of us who have followed the redemption of Matt Scudder, the moral musings of post modern hit man Keller, and the hapless Bernie Rodenbhar series, know the letdown you feel when you have read them all, and must wait till the next new release! Well, here is a great sampler of many new, and many classic short stories about the quirky continuing characters of Lawrence Block that you probably haven't read yet. . Just the right length for a quick fix of Block irony, and arranged by character, this is a great beach book or airport companion. You may have read a few of these, but I found some new stuff well worth the price...
Eon: Dragoneye Reborn This is a very engaging novel about a young girl who is forced to live her life as a young man in order to fulfill her destiny. It is a coming of age story, like many great works of fiction in the young adult fantasy genre.
Forbidden (The Books of Mortals)

Grandad, There's a Head on the Beach: A Jimm Juree Mystery The book is basically a continuation of the lives of Jimm Jurree and family in a southern Thailand backwater where they are trying to manage a sinking resort hotel. This episode provides some clue as to what brought them down from a comfortable middle-class life in the north and, of course, focuses on the plight of the Burmese refugees living in the area.
Hammered: The Iron Druid Chronicles One thing I really liked about the book was the handful of chapters written from the POV of a different character. Each of these chapters has a very different feel, rhythm, language, etc. It really shows Hearne's skill as a writer that he can make each narrator feel so unique and real.
I'm not going to give a plot summary here, since the synopsis is given on the back of the book and in many other reviews. All I can say is that this is the most emotionally satisfying book of the series. If you liked the first two books, this one won't disappoint.
Journey to the End of the World In this final book Joel is fifteen and has come to the end of his school years. Will he live his dream of him and his father Samuel leaving Northern Sweden for a life on a ship travelling on a Journey to the end of the world or will the letter telling him where his mum is now living change this. She left him when he was a baby and has never been in touch.
Kingdom of Shadows A band of desperate criminals…a seemingly deserted farmhouse guarded by the rotting remnants of scarecrows, the echoes of torture and depravity and the whispers of unholy nightmares…a dark night concealing terrible secrets, misery and long-suppressed horrors… One faraway, nearly forgotten night, this night, stands between the forsaken and deliverance, but they are not alone in the darkness. Something demonic dwells within…something luring them toward a separate kingdom…a kingdom of night…a kingdom of evil… A Kingdom Of Shadows… Fear the night.
Lethal Sandra Brown has proven year after year the incredible ability she has to write thrillers that draw you in and take you on a adventure. But this book far exceeds any in the past as it keeps you guessing as to who is the shadow boss, where is the key to the answers, and what is the motive behind all of this. Unbelievable barely scratches the surface of how great this book and when it all comes together you find yourself gasping with unexpected revelations. The only downside is Ms. Brown apparently likes to tease her fans with cliffhangers - which you have to read to understand.

Boy Soldier It is still a good story in the vein of McNab's adult thrillers, but toned down for the YA audience. For those who are looking for another Alex Rider type of action/techno-gizmo yarn, you'll be disappointed. There are chases and shootings and bloody parts, but nothing like the James Bond special effects books about Alex Rider, though I do like Horowitz's novels.
Avenger Having proved his grandfather Fergus’ innocence, Danny Watts and his friend Elena have now been recruited by the British government for a dangerous assignment. Elena must impersonate a would-be suicide bomber to win the confidence of Black Star, the master computer hacker who is behind the rash of teenage bombings that have swept the globe. When Black Star sends Elena to New York, Danny and Fergus come along to keep an eye on her. But Fergus knows that once this mission is over, the government will have them all eliminated. As Elena begins to fall under Black Star’s spell, it will take all of Danny’s survival training to find a way out. Having scored smash bestsellers in Britain with Traitor and Payback, the adventure continues in Avenger with all the authentic Special Ops details that made the previous books stand out.
My Only Adam, shy Adam gets a chance to spend some time with Olivia who needs a history tutor. It's a good thing Adam rocks that subject. From their first "session" in Adam's room we get to meet Olivia. She really is a free spirit. Someone who doesn't hang on to the negative and wants to live in the present, not dwell on the past. Hence her need for a history tutor. Though the first few conversations between Adam and Olivia are awkward for him, he finds comfort being close to her. Adam starts to open up in ways he never has before. Things he always thought people would call him a geek, nerd for Olivia finds cool. That starts a change in Adam.
Northwest Angle I read the story compulsively and enjoyed the characters, while wondering how they would escape from their situation. Cork's character is particularly well developed in that at the start of the story we see him as a father wanting more time with his family before they get too old and have other interests, then we see him as a person proud of his Indian heritage, finally, as a former lawman we see Cork's desire to bring criminals to justice. The twist that the author provided toward the end, added to the intelligence of the story and the satisfaction with the conclusion.
On a Wicked Dawn The premise (of two people, secretly in love with the other who plot and plan to make the other one fall in love as well) had so much promise, but did not live up to it. I felt as thought the (How do I put this politely?) "romance" aspect of the book took up a much larger percentage of the book than the love story behind it... which made it difficult to relate to or understand. The mystery was also minimalized, and the main characters did not get involved in it until 3/4 through the book. In all, I enjoyed the characters and the idea behind their story, but thought something was missing in the relationship development

Rock the Heart Lanie has just landed an intern position at a marketing firm in New York. She is excited to be given the chance to finally live her dream. That is until she gets her first assignment. Never in her wildest dreams did she think her job would bring her back in contact with her first love, none other than Noel Falcon, lead singer of Black Falcon. Lanie has not seen Noel in four years. Not since the night she broke up with him on their dock. She believed at the time he was being selfish in deciding to pursue his music instead of going off to college with her. But there has not been a time in those 4 years that she has not regretted her decision.
Russian Amerika The one thing that is somewhat troublesome is any explanation for why technology has not progressed beyond realworld 1930s or 40s. Presumably this is due to the amount of fragmenting that has gone on, but that doesn't explain why things have seemingly been frozen. Perhaps that will be explained in a future installment. I am looking forward to the next book in this story, because although there are some flaws, this is still a hugely entertaining story.
Shadow Kin: A Novel of the Half-Light City As I read this book I had no idea if there would be a HEA at the end or if this was going to take more the urban fantasy route. There ends up being a HEA, and I enjoyed it. Although my one complaint with this book is that I wish their romance was explored a little more. This book only takes place over about a week - and they go from strangers to in love quite quickly. I don't want to call Simon a beta hero, but I can't classify him as alpha either. Maybe his quiet, soothing healing moments lends him more to the beta side, but he definitely has that protective, fighting urges when it comes to Lily. It is a unique relationship that just drew me in.
Silenced: A Novel (Frederika Bergman) Enjoyable read, with interesting characters. Set in Stockholm. I felt I knew the central characters and could like them. Well written, keeps you thinking, but not a heavy read. A quality "whodunit". Doesn't rely on flashy characters. Has a flowing writing style, interweaving the different characters and subplots, to a suspenseful finale. Would recommend.
Son of Stone Woods has a unique, cryptic style. This installment in the long running series is typical Woods. Stone Barrington is aware the son of his long time love, Arrington Calder is actually his biological child. This book brings that relationship
to the forefront, establishing Stone as "Dad". The story moves quickly and the ending is obvious early on. For much of this book it feels like you are being given information you will need in future installments and Woods is setting up future books. But if you are a long time fan of the series this is not to be missed.

Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln Through careful reading and perusal of literally thousands of personal letters from cabinet members and from President Lincoln, Goodwin is able to put together a wonderfully clear and unique picture of the character of these men. In addition, she is able to paint a picture of each in words, and point out how their true character differed often from the public perception that abounded. Ms. Goodwin should be noted for her fine and excruciating work in creating this book which will remain as a must read classic for Lincoln scholars of the present and the future. All of us who track the Lincoln Presidency, 140 years after its termination are grateful for her assiduous work in creating this wonderful book.
The Anglo-Irish Murders This book, as with Edwards' other books, is a great spoof on political correctness and sterotypes. The mystery is not exciting - but the book is worth reading just for her discussion of the MOPES (Most Oppressed People on Earth). That seems to be the title most people vie for these days. This book is really funny.
The Athenian Murders The historical sections are fascinating, wonderfully detailed crafted with the love of a scholar. They're not overbearing, though, and they only add to the story and the characters. It's also worth assuring you that Somoza balances the two parallel stories brilliantly. Never is there more importance placed on the truth of the ancient mystery than there is on the truth of the modern one, so effortless does he temper them, balance them. Nor does he allow the interjections of the "translator" to interrupt the flow of the mystery too much. It happens a little, but that is to be expected, I suppose.
The Big Thaw The Big Thaw starts out with the mystery of who murdered two young burglars and spreads to a far larger scenario with critical international implications. Harstad actually makes us feel the miserable cold of the Iowa winter while creating a very real sense of the territory he knows so well. The climax of this tale, set on a riverboat gambling casino, is beautifully executed, causing the reader to wonder every step of the way how this impossible situation will be resolved. As it turns out, it is done with great imagination and at a pace that leaves one fairly winded.
The Caller One mild summer evening Lily and her husband are enjoying a meal while their baby daughter sleeps peacefully in her pram beneath a maple tree. But when Lily steps outside she is paralysed with terror. The child is bathed in blood. Inspector Sejer is called to the hospital to meet the family. Mercifully the baby is unharmed, but her parents are deeply shaken. Sejer spends the evening trying to comprehend why anyone would carry out such a sinister prank. Then, just before midnight, somebody rings his doorbell. The corridor is empty, but the caller has left a small grey envelope on the mat. From his living room window, the inspector watches a figure slip across the car park and disappear into the darkness. Inside the envelope Sejer finds a postcard bearing a short message. Hell begins now.

The Castle One reading this novel should keep in mind that Kafka spent his entire professional life working as a risk manager in an insurance company. He was acutely aware of the nature of corporate bureaucracy, and the myriad of silly rules and the amount of red tape inundating modern corporate and political life. Some tend towards a metaphysical reading of the novel, and while the book is not immune to such a reading, I think it can be better read on a more concrete social level. Kafka worked in an office his entire adult life, until his tuberculosis forced him to retire on what today would be workers' disability. He knew first hand the degrading, callous, and inhuman nature of the bureaucratic culture that was threatening to engulf modern urban living. Unfortunately, he did not, like K. in the novel, know how to escape the nightmare himself, or give us advice on how we could escape it ourselves.
The Company We Keep: A Husband-and-Wife True-Life Spy Story When I started reading this book I found out that the movie "Syriana" was based on Bob. I liked Syriana, but that was one confusing movie. I guess its hard to write a true story when most of the details get removed by the CIA because
they are classified. You also have to take into account how many balls these operatives have to keep juggling at the same time. It sounds like a very hard job. Being a CIA operative always seemed like a really cool job. Then I read this book and I realize that dream is dead to me now. Not that I had any chance of ever doing that, but now I realize if the CIA knocks on my door tomorrow with a job offer I will have to turn them down.
The Dark Vineyard: A Novel of the French Countryside Walker doesn't disappoint. Once again, he's created a novel that is sensuous and suspense-filled as it is inviting and informative. By the last chapter (which, I confess, my pent-up curiosity demanded I peek at), I had effortlessly become knowledgeable about the hotly debated GMO controversy, international trade and economics, oenology, crime scene investigations, the art of the truffle omelette, French law, corporate espionage, the universality of local politics, and, most acutely observed, human nature. "Bruno wondered whether it was the policeman in him that made him so interested in how other people presented themselves to others. In his own experience, and indeed in his own case, what the public saw was often very different from the real person, but it was full of useful clues about the way the person would truly like to be. Bruno would love to be as calm and self-confident as he had taught himself to seem, and to be even a fraction as wise and patient as he sought to be appear."
The Enchantress of Florence Very rarely do readers get an opportunity to read prose as lovely and grand and mesmerizing as Rushdie's prose in this book. The cumulative effect of reading lovely passages on top of dazzling passages will surely overwhelm the reader: "Fires began to burn in the twilight, like warnings. From the black bowl of the sky came the answering fires of the stars. As if the earth and the heavens were armies preparing for battle, he thought. As if their encampments lie quiet at night and await the war of the day to come." This book reminded me of Rudyard Kipling's "Kim" it is written in the same grand style.
The Fall of Society This book is very intense in that the reader does not get to rest. The readers are constantly running for our very lives. There is no safe place. The pace of this book is so fast I stayed up all night to finish it. There was no place to break off reading! The author uses description in a way that I felt like i was watching a movie instead of reading. I can't wait for the next book!

The Final Solution: A Story of Detection The old man is clearly Sherlock Holmes, even though Chabon never mentions him by name. Perhaps it's to keep from treading on literary holy ground. But he brings the right mixture of warmth and crabbiness to "the old man." He also gives depth to the supporting characters like Mr. Panicker (who is having a crisis of faith) and his wife (who has a crush on their lodger). Even Bruno gets well developed. While "Final Solution" isn't too great as a mystery, it's an excellent novel, and a poignant tale of Sherlock Holmes' final case. Definitely worth checking out.
The Good Father Never in four hours. You know that expression I couldn't put it down? Well it's a very real here. I think I'm a such a practical person, I know there's other things in life than reading a book, things I really must get done. But I simply needed to know how it would end. I don't like reading reviews that tell the story but rather pique my interest. I know you don't know me, but I would be hard-pressed to find someone who wouldn't enjoy this book.
The Inca Prophecy Adrian d'Hage makes no apology for his mythological warning of the Inca Prophecy seen to be culminating in December of 2012 when supposedly the fifth sun of the Inca is coming to a close. And who would dispute this, especially not the USA, being targetted at present (November) by the modern omens of earthquake, tsunamis, cyclones, floods and deaths creating deadly havoc.
The Lazarus Machine: A Tweed & Nightingale Adventure
While The Lazarus Machine was not perfect it was a fun read. The characters made me giggle and there were plenty of plot twists to keep me entertained. The inventions were unique and brought a few points I kept thinking about long after I put the book down. I'm sad that I'm going to have to wait another year for the sequel. If you like steampunk you should definitely pick this book up!
The New Kid I thought the author did a nice job of explaining the weapons and such that Will (The new kid) used. Being the type of girl that I am, I have no idea how to even hold a fake sword so having it dumbed down a bit was nice. I did find myself having to be pushed to read it towards the end for some reason, maybe for the lack of romance in the last few chapters? Overall this was a book I would recommend reading!

The Ones That Got Away There's another story where the title itself can give you nightmares. Two words for you: "Meat Tree." Think about that. King called his men's magazine stories that populated Night Shift and Skeleton Crew "screamers." Well, Jones takes the screamer mentality and deploys it full force, with an ability prod you along with sentences that are sharp enough to cut. Twisty and startling, the stories don't finish up in predictable "screamer" fashion many times . . . they just worm their way into you, make themselves at home, and you'll feel like your balance is off for a few days. You find yourself wanting a little extra sunshine, maybe a long shower. This effect is achieved largely through the use of childhood as a gateway to the horrors within the collection, and the close attention paid to who the horror happens to as opposed to how. The story notes are a treasure trove for anyone interested in fiction, the author, or just loves having insight into these excellent stories. Better than that crap bonus material you find DVD's, that's for sure.
You want me to sit here and gush about every story? Just go out there and buy this book. Like, now.
The Power of Five: Oblivion Anthony Horowitz concludes Gatekeepers Power of Five the epic Oblivion! The best for last! Hooray! Yipee! Yay! Wahoo! Absolutely awesome!
The Shadow Girls Jesper Humlin is a poet of middling acclaim who is saddled by his underwhelming book sales, an exasperated girlfriend, a demanding mother, and a rapidly fading tan. His boy-wonder stockbroker has squandered Humlin’s investments, and his editor, who says he must write a crime novel to survive, begins to pitch and promote the nonexistent book despite Humlin’s emphatic refusals. Then, when he travels to Gothenburg to give a reading, he finds himself thrust into an entirely different world, where names shift, stories overlap, and histories are both deeply secret and in profound need of retelling.
The Slap I was very surprised about how my feelings about the characters changed the further I read. Those I might be most likely to identify with, given my life, turned out to be some one the ones I disliked the most. And the choices of many of the characters, whether they are about their reactions to the slap, their sexual choices, their drug use...shocked me.
The Submissive Thirty four year old Nathaniel West was a man completely used to submission and compliance, both in the workplace as CEO of West Industries and as a Dominant in his relationships. Despite losing his parents at a young age, he has been surrounded by family and experienced deep love. He was, however, a man damaged by loss and as a result, has kept himself emotionally isolated, hiding behind an impenetrable wall of civility and control. Behind this veneer though, was a very warm, thoughtful and compassionate man.

The Yellow Birds This is an engrossing, readable book which is quite short but has immense impact and which will stay with me for a very long time. I think this genuinely belongs among great war books such as All Quiet On the Western Front and Dispatches. I could give a long list of examples of how thoughtful, insightful and honest it is, but I will just say that I recommend that you read it. It is truly exceptional and you will never forget it.
Thunder of Heaven: A Joshua Jordan Novel Jordan is joined with his wife, Abigail, talented lawyer and capable co-chair of a secret, privately funded think tank that acts on these threats when the leaders of our government can't - or won't. His daughter, Deborah, and new friend, Ethan March find themselves fighting the battle in Israel when Joshua goes over there to show the government a new military weapon. And finally, his son, Cal, after a life-changing experience with a bomb-wielding terrorist in Book One, decides to join his family in their fight to save the U.S. This book has a lot of military jargon, but don't worry, there are explanations. And since this book is set in the near future, it's not difficult to imagine our country going through these circumstances. It's a scary proposition, but it makes for a thrilling read.
Touched by Angels New York City is always in need of miracles . . . And this Christmas is no exception. Thank heavens the divinely inspired, if somewhat ditsy, angelic trio Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy is available to answer three heartfelt prayers this sacred holiday season . . . and to impart important lessons along the way. And Goodness knows (as do Mercy and Shirley) that the three lonely women to whom they’ve been assigned have a lot to learn: A dedicated inner-city school teacher, Brynn needs to teach her troubled students how to dream . . . Shy and dutiful Hannah must learn to follow her own heart . . . And frustrated small-town-girl-turned- Broadway-wannabe Jenny needs to discover that home is where love truly lies. It’s time for the angels to shine . . . and to prove once again that when you wish upon a star, you get much more than just a pretty song!
Triple Crossing Reporter Sebastian Rotella pulls no punches in this dark look at working undercover amongst extremely dangerous people. The story line is action-packed while containing a strong cast and not just the three above as for instance Mexican official Mendez diligently works anti-corruption in Tijuana. Except for the suits who use the illegal immigration issue as a tough on crime vote getter, readers will appreciate the dangerous rest of the story.
War in Heaven The high-powered sequel to VETERAN sees an unlikely hero make an even more unlikely return to take the reader back into a vividly rendered bleak future. But a bleak future where there are still wonders: man travelling out into the universe, Bladerunneresque cities hanging from the ceilings of vast caverns, aliens that we can barely comprehend. Gavin Smith writes fast-moving, incredibly violent SF thrillers but behind the violence and the thrills lies a carefully thought out story and characters who have far more to them than first meets the eye. Never one to avoid controversy Gavin Smith nevertheless invites you to think beyond the initial shock of what you have just read. But in the meantime? Another fire-fight, another chase another flight of imagination.

Fast, Fresh & Green: More Than 90 Delicious Recipes for Veggie Lovers 2010 | ISBN-10: 0811865665 | EPUB, MOBI | 224 pages | 7 MB
Not all these recipes are fast, nor do they all feature green veggies (nor are they consciously ecofocused). The subtitle explains it better: this rainbow of appealing recipes is for those who adore vegetable dishes and want more than an afterthought chapter dedicated to them. Middleton, a former editor-at-large for Fine Cooking magazine, divides recipes by cooking style, instructing readers in braising, hands-on sautéing, stir-frying, grilling, and more. She offers dishes— braised fingerlings with rosemary and mellow garlic; sautéed carrots with warm olive and mint dressing; stir-fried swiss chard with pine nuts and balsamic butter; and grill-roasted bell peppers with goat cheese and cherry tomato dressing—with layers of complexity that heighten but don't overwhelm the flavors of the intended stars, the vegetables. And she employs interesting contrasts—savory and sweet, for example—in recipes such as vanilla and cardamom glazed acorn squash rings; roasted turnips and pears with rosemary-honey drizzle; and gingery sweet potato and apple sauté with toasted almonds that are likely to tempt even the vegetable-averse. Fink's photos—mostly of green veggies, perhaps in a nod to the misnomer title—show lima beans and peas as mouth-watering, decadent treats.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) 2012 | ISBN-10: 0307886271, 0307886263 | EPUB, MOBI | 240 pages | 6 MB Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?” Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court
of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly! In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.
Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman 2012 | ISBN-10: 0345408772, 0679456724 | EPUB | 336 pages | 10 MB The Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Peter the Great, Nicholas and Alexandra, and The Romanovs returns with another masterpiece of narrative biography, the extraordinary story of an obscure young German princess who traveled to Russia at fourteen and rose to become one of the most remarkable, powerful, and captivating women in history. Born into a minor noble family, Catherine transformed herself into Empress of Russia by sheer determination. Possessing a brilliant mind and an insatiable curiosity as a young woman, she devoured the works of Enlightenment philosophers and, when she reached the throne, attempted to use their principles to guide her rule of the vast and backward Russian empire. She knew or corresponded with the preeminent historical figures of her time: Voltaire, Diderot, Frederick the Great, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, Marie Antoinette, and, surprisingly, the American naval hero, John Paul Jones. Reaching the throne fired by Enlightenment philosophy and determined to become the embodiment of the “benevolent despot” idealized by Montesquieu, she found herself always contending with the deeply ingrained realities of Russian life, including serfdom. She persevered, and for thirty-four years the government, foreign policy, cultural development, and welfare of the Russian people were in her hands. She dealt with domestic rebellion, foreign wars, and the tidal wave of political change and violence churned up by the French Revolution that swept across Europe. Her reputation depended entirely on the perspective of the speaker. She was praised by Voltaire as the equal of the greatest of classical philosophers; she was condemned by her enemies, mostly foreign, as “the Messalina of the north.” Catherine’s family, friends, ministers, generals, lovers, and enemies—all are here, vividly described. These included her ambitious, perpetually scheming mother; her weak, bullying husband, Peter (who left her lying untouched beside him for nine years after their marriage); her unhappy son and heir, Paul; her beloved grandchildren; and her “favorites”—the parade of young men from whom she sought companionship and the recapture of youth as well as sex. Here, too, is the giant figure of Gregory Potemkin, her most significant lover and possible husband, with whom she shared a passionate correspondence of love and separation, followed by seventeen years of unparalleled mutual achievement. The story is superbly told. All the special qualities that Robert K. Massie brought to Nicholas and Alexandra and Peter the Great are present here: historical accuracy, depth of understanding, felicity of style, mastery of detail, ability to shatter myth, and a rare genius for finding and expressing the human drama in extraordinary lives. History offers few stories richer in drama than that of Catherine the Great. In this book, this eternally fascinating woman is returned to life.
Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch 2012 | ISBN-10: 1400067898, 0812979796 | EPUB | 336 pages | 16 MB In this magisterial new biography, New York Times bestselling author Sally Bedell Smith brings to life one of the world’s most fascinating and enigmatic women: Queen Elizabeth II. From the moment of her ascension to the throne in 1952 at the age of twenty-five, Queen Elizabeth II has been the object of unparalleled scrutiny. But through the fog of glamour and gossip, how well do we really know the world’s most famous monarch? Drawing on numerous interviews and never-before-revealed documents, acclaimed biographer Sally Bedell Smith pulls back the curtain to show in intimate detail the public and private lives of Queen Elizabeth II, who has led her country and Commonwealth through the wars and upheavals of the last sixty years with unparalleled composure, intelligence, and grace. In Elizabeth the Queen, we meet the young girl who suddenly becomes “heiress presumptive” when her uncle abdicates the throne. We meet the thirteen-year-old Lilibet as she falls in love with a young navy cadet named Philip and becomes determined to marry him, even though her parents prefer wealthier English aristocrats. We see the teenage Lilibet repairing army trucks during World War II and standing with Winston Churchill on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on V-E Day. We see the young Queen struggling to balance the demands of her job with her role as the mother of two young children. Sally Bedell Smith brings us inside the palace doors and into the Queen’s daily routines—the “red boxes” of documents she reviews each day, the weekly meetings she has had with twelve prime ministers, her physically demanding tours abroad, and the constant scrutiny of the press—as well as her personal relationships: with Prince Philip, her husband of sixty-four years and the love of her life; her children and their oftendisastrous marriages; her grandchildren and friends. Compulsively readable and scrupulously researched, Elizabeth the Queen is a close-up view of a woman we’ve known only from a distance, illuminating the lively personality, sense of humor, and canny intelligence with which she meets the most demanding work and family obligations. It is also a fascinating window into life at the center of the last great monarchy.

fads, implementing pointless reorganizations and demanding status reports. "Leadership isn't something you're born with," it declares. "It's something you learn by reading Dogbert books."
Peter Reinhart's Artisan Breads Every Day 2009 | ISBN-10: 1580089984 | PDF | 224 pages | 9 MB With "no-knead" bread recipes all the rage now, expert baker Reinhart (Whole Grain Breads) has come back with a process that is slightly more involved but much more productive than the limited classic no-knead method, yielding all manner of sweet, savory and sandwich breads. He introduces a "stretch and fold" technique that, combined with a slow rise and without the lengthy prefermentation that his and other artisan bakers' recipes usually require, means more freedom and less active work time, but still a very flavorful product. To make French baguettes, for example, only one brief knead is required; then, after an overnight or multiday rise, the dough is ready for shaping—much better than being shackled to the kitchen for an entire morning for multiple rises, as is usually the case in baguette making. Other great breads, such as focaccia, soft cheese bread and even panettone, get similar preparation makeovers. Reinhart occasionally calls for a starter, but his carefully constructed, nonintimidating mother starter method should encourage the wary. For bakers who have come to bread through the no-knead route, Reinhart's thorough, detailed recipes offer a perfect way to expand their repertoire without getting their hands too sticky or giving up too much of their time, while those who are already fans will appreciate having a little more room in their schedule while still producing terrific breads.

Singularity Rising: Surviving and Thriving in a Smarter, Richer, and More Dangerous World English | ISBN: 1936661659 | 2012 | 288 pages | PDF | 5 MB In Ray Kurzweil’s New York Times bestseller The Singularity is Near, the futurist and entrepreneur describes the Singularity, a likely future utterly different than anything we can imagine. The Singularity is triggered by the tremendous growth of human and computing intelligence that is an almost inevitable outcome of Moore's Law. Since the book's publication, the coming of the Singularity is now eagerly anticipated by many of the leading thinkers in Silicon Valley, from PayPal mastermind Peter Thiel to Google co-founder Larry Page. The formation of the Singularity University, and the huge popularity of the Singularity website kurzweilai.com, speak to the importance of this intellectual movement. But what about the average person? How will the Singularity affect our daily lives—our jobs, our families, and our wealth?
Singularity Rising: Surviving and Thriving in a Smarter, Richer, and More Dangerous World focuses on the implications of a future society faced with an abundance of human and artificial intelligence. James D. Miller, an economics professor and popular speaker on the Singularity, reveals how natural selection has been increasing human intelligence over the past few thousand years and speculates on how intelligence enhancements will shape civilization over the next forty years. Miller considers several possible scenarios in this coming singularity: • A merger of man and machine making society fantastically wealthy and nearly immortal • Competition with billions of cheap AIs drive human wages to almost nothing while making investors rich • Businesses rethink investment decisions to take into account an expected future period of intense creative destruction • Inequality drops worldwide as technologies mitigate the cognitive cost of living in impoverished environments • Drugs designed to fight Alzheimer's disease and keep soldiers alert on battlefields have the fortunate side effect of increasing all of their users’ IQs, which, in turn, adds a percentage points to worldwide economic growth Singularity Rising offers predictions about the economic implications for a future of widely expanding intelligence and practical career and investment advice on flourishing on the way to the Singularity.

A Painted House (Audiobook) English | 2001 | ISBN: 0553712527 | MP3 | 142 MB The hill people and the Mexicans arrived on the same day. It was a Wednesday, early in September 1952. The Cardinals were five games behind the Dodgers with three weeks to go, and the season looked hopeless. The cotton, however, was waist-high to my father, over my head, and he and my grandfather could be heard before supper whispering words that were seldom heard. It could be a "good crop." Thus begins the new novel from John Grisham, a story inspired by his own childhood in rural Arkansas. The narrator is a farm boy named Luke Chandler, age seven, who lives in the cotton fields with his parents and grandparents in a little house that's never been painted. The Chandlers farm eighty acres that they rent, not own, and when the cotton is ready they hire a truckload of Mexicans and a family from the Ozarks to help harvest it. For six weeks they pick cotton, battling the heat, the rain, and fatigue, and, sometimes, each other. As the weeks pass Luke sees and hears things no seven-year-old could possibly be prepared for, and finds himself keeping secrets that not only threaten the crop but will change the lives of the Chandlers forever. A PAINTED HOUSE is a moving story of one boy's journey from innocence to experience.
