A Distant Eden The author's style can most kindly be described as workmanlike. That implies a bit of stodginess, but it also implies competence. He develops the story in parallel threads, each reaching a climax of suspense/violence at the same time. A trifle cliche, but in his hands he makes it work reasonably well as a technique. The quality of his dialog tends to range from adequate to penny dreadful, with most of it being adequate. As noted above, there really is no character development, something the author readily acknowledges.
A Girl's Guide to Guns and Monsters On the average though, with the exception of the Saintcrow, the Hines, the Holder, and the Reichert, which are written in a serious vein, this is a good anthology filled with lightweight, undemanding entertainment.
A Matter of Circumstance and Celludrones From mechanical puppies to paddling in the aether, from mad scientists to amazing inventions, A MATTER OF CIRCUMSTANCES AND CELLUDRONES is set in a remarkably Victorian England where spunky women are constrained by circumstances and robotic celludrones and the world is changing as fast as the newly invented dirigibles can carry their passengers.
A Shimmer of Angels In this compelling and spirited debut novel, 16-year-old Rayna Evans has spent the last three years in a mental institution for seeing angels intent on remaining free, she ignores signs that she may be slipping into a world she has tried to climb out of. When her hallucinations begin showing up at school, can she keep her sanity and prevent students from dying at the hands of angels she cannot admit to seeing? Psychiatry, fantasy, and realism come together here in a story of a young girl struggling with identity, secrets, and confronting her greatest fears.
Adrian's War I loved the first book in this series so I was excited to hear that Adrian was getting his own book this time. Much like A Distant Eden, this book is part survival guide and part novel and I thought the parts fit together even better this time around. There are some great tips in here to research further on how to live off the land and survive in even the harshest of environments as well as educating readers about the cultural blinders that prevent us from maximizing nutrition when our lives are on the line. I found the information about the proper way to eat rabbits particularly intriguing since the well documented cases of hunters "starving" to death with bellies full of rabbit meat.

Afterlife This was a really great book! Definitely in my top 5 favorite books / series. The author does a great job of pulling you in and caring about the characters. I could not put it down. I really liked the take on Angels and Demons that the author wrote about. I am hooked on this series and just started reading book #2. Can hardly put that one down too!

Apocalypse The future has changed its course. In the notorious Bermuda Triangle a private jet vanishes without trace, taking with it scientists working for world-famous philanthropist Joaquin Abell. In Miami, Captain Kyle Sears is called to a murder scene. A woman and her daughter have both been shot through the head. But within moments of arriving, Sears receives a phone call from the woman's husband, physicist Charles Purcell. 'I did not kill my wife and daughter. In less than twenty-four hours I too will be murdered and I know the man who will kill me. My murderer does not yet know that he will commit the act.' With uncanny accuracy, Charles goes on to predict the immediate future just as it unfolds around Sears, and leaves clues for a man he's never met before: Ethan Warner. The hunt is on to find Purcell, and Ethan Warner is summoned by the Defense Intelligence Agency to head up the search. But this is no ordinary case, as Warner and his partner Nicola Lopez are about to discover, and time is literally everything.

Bear Island Bear Island is less a thriller than it is a mystery, which explains the somewhat slower-than-usual pacing. MacLean brings back Captain Imrie (from When Eight Bells Toll) who is a good guy this time. Rather, he's a sub-character, piloting the Morning Rose to Bear Island. Aboard is a film crew and the producers/directors of the most anticipated film of the year.
Big Girls Do It On Christmas If Big Girls Do It Married is a perfect delicious cupcake then this story is the yummy cherry on top. (And we know how much Anna likes her cupcakes.) A special thank you to Jasinda for the Christmas sweetness and hotness!
Big Girls Do It On Top There is a love triangle here and it's a very well written one. Usually you can find yourself leaning towards one guy over the next, but with Ana's choices, it's hard to know which way she will go, and which choice you would make if the choice were up to you.
Black Lament This is an incredibly difficult review to write because SO much happens in this installment and I refuse to spoil any of it. Many, many things change, characters that you hated you have to learn to like, characters that were always Maddy's rocks are beginning to waiver, numerous new characters are introduced and muddle up the already delicate balance that Maddy is desperately trying to hold on to (both for better and for worse), and Maddy discovers and nurtures a darkness within herself that has those closest to her a bit on edge.
Breakheart Pass Master action adventure author Alistair Maclean goes away from his usual World War II setting using a 1870's Western theme for his 1974 novel "Breakheart Pass". While not written with the intricate plots or character descriptions of his earlier work, the book contains enough misdirection and intrigue to keep you guessing. Maclean's writing style is which he displays an erudite command of the English language, gives us small bits and pieces of information slowly advancing the plot.

But at this year’s gathering, people are mysteriously dying. Intrepid sleuths Cecile Dubois and Neil Bowman join the caravan in order to uncover the truth behind the deaths, in the process revealing an international plot that the sinister Gaiuse Strome will stop at nothing to keep secret.
Cat Bearing Gifts: A Joe Grey Mystery On a mountain road near Molena Point, California, violent Vic Amson's pickup is wrecked in a multi-vehicle accident. The Greenlaw couple is in the hospital having been injured by a landslide just before losing their car. Vic and Birely soon find the stolen vehicle contains priceless antiques and plenty of jewels. Clyde and Ryan Damen help sneak the Greenlaw companion Kit into the hospital to see Pedric and Lucinda. Afterward the feline and some pals like Joe Grey protect their two legged friends while investigating the theft and subsequently murder.
Critical Error The only people who have more power than them are the Jews, who they hate. One of them is even a "Koch". No mention of the Soros' or the Tide Foundation, or Media Maters of the world. Not to mention the editorial stance of the New York Times, the LA Times, NBC, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, etc., etc. However, the Jews fare a lot better than the republicans.
Just One Day Sharla Lovelace has been my 'New author find' of the year. Her debut book is the best I've read in 2012, and this novella did not disappoint.
Knives and Sheaths I LOVE Elena and Raphael so any story about them is a good story. But....I just love how Raphael just gets Elena.

March in Country: A Novel of the Vampire Earth I'm happy to say that Knight once again got "it" right with March In Country. Old characters are reintroduced, new ones are added in almost perfectly, and enemies made several books ago are finally starting to show their hand. The majority of the book is spent with Valentine, venturing once again into Kurian controlled land, only this time to "rescue" some old friends. While the premise is fairly simplistic, the journey helps to flesh out the Vampire Earth world, as well as fill in plot holes from previous books.
Night without End "Night Without End" is one of Alistair Maclean's earliest novels. If his story-telling technique had not quite matured at this early date, he could still tell a gripping story, a closed house murder mystery set out-of-doors. Stolen military secrets are at the heart of the plot-line, but they frequently take a second seat to the simple task of surviving the dangerous cold weather and the uncertain terrain. The hero, a scientist named Mason, must ferry the passengers to safety on the coast while figuring out the identity of the killer and while being distracted by his sudden affections for a stewardess. Maclean builds the story to a thrilling finale on a glacier.
Partisans
All the usual late-career Maclean flaws are here. The impossibly brave and capable hero Peter Petersen, the "heroines" who are actually utterly clueless damsels in distress, the clumsily handled "no-one is really who they seem" plot twists. Despite being set in wartime Yugoslavia, the book is very talky and slow moving, with almost no action at all. In fact, very little of interest happens at all throughout the book, it's mostly the characters trading one-liners and complaining about being left in the dark by Petersen. There's certainly no sense of the bigger picture of the fate of Yugoslavia and the progress of the war itself.
Puppet on a Chain Interpol agent Paul Sherman has just arrived in Amsterdam and before he can even leave Schiphol Airport he has already witnessed the gunning down of his key contact, been knocked half-unconscious by an assassin, and tangled with local authorities.
River of Death River of Death isn't awful Mr. MacLean's plot would work well for a novella, but instead it was stretched out to 200 pages with a lot of possibility gone to a dusty death. What this book lacks in suspense and drive is often-enough-albeit partially--made up for with MacLean's more amusing bits of description. For example, he describes John Hamilton "[w]ith his tangled hair, a week's growth of matted and bloodied beard, and ripped and bloodstained shirt...[looking] as if he had just returned from the scene of a successfully if messily executed triple murder" (35). MacLean has always made me laugh with remarks like this.

San Andreas Another magnificent tale of treachery at sea from a storytelling genius. Suddenly, just before dawn, the lights went out aboard the San Andreas. For the British hospital ship sailing the deadly, U-boat patrolled Norwegian waters, a nightmare of violence and betrayal has begun. A terrifying game of sabotage in which an unknown traitor among the crew holds all the cards. The red crosses on the vessel's sides spell anything but safety. For a dangerous secret has turned the ship into a priceless quarry. With the Captain out of action Bosun Archie McKinnon takes over. Alone in treacherous, frozen seas, her compass smashed, the San Andreas is being drawn relentlessly into the enemy's hands.
Santorini Characters were never Maclean's strong point, but here they're cardboard thin. Grave, solemn heroes who can do no wrong and never raise a sweat, a villian who is easily identifiable and has no purpose other than to be a "bad guy", heroines whose only role is to be "classic Greek beauty" love interests.
Seawitch The tale of murder and revenge set on a remote oil rig, from the acclaimed master of action and suspense.
South by Java Head February, 1942: Singapore lies burning and shattered, defenseless before the conquering Japanese Army. A boat slips out of the harbor into the South China Sea. On board is a desperate, disparate group of people, each with a secret to guard, each willing to kill to keep that secret safe.
Spirit's End Like her previous books, Aaron delivers. The book is well written and fast paced. It keeps you riveted and wanting more. Additionally, the book takes time to better acquaint you with Sara and Etmon Banage and their relationship. After finding out in the last book that they were married, I wanted to know what had happened, why they had grown apart, and this book answered those questions, including questions on Sparrow, the relay points, and more. We also see Nico and Josef's relationship grow, and dare I say it, Eli and Miranda's. Since it is the last book, all questions are answered, and it was sublime to read. Loved the information on the Lord of Storms and the League. For some reason, the first time Alric was mentioned I became a fan. I wish he had been a more prominent participant in this book, but reading about him towards the end was nice too.

The Creative Fire The Creative Fire is Ruby's story of fighting for freedom with her voice and passion for uniting all the people aboard the space ship, The Creative Fire. Separated by class, the grays are the lowest and enforced by the red and, seldom seen by grays, blue peacekeepers. Ruby is not alone in her quest as there were rebels who came before her and those who work secretly. The third person perspective really works for this story because the writing stays centered on Ruby while opening up to another character: Onor, one of Ruby's best friends. It was so exciting to see the two characters start off on the same plot line, then one placed on a subplot that converged with the main plot line by the end of the novel. Writing two different methods of revolution was an ingenious move for Cooper!
The Forgotten When the book opens, Puller is contemplating returning to work after a brief vacation taken to recover from the events of Zero Day, when his father receives a worrying letter from Puller's Aunt Betsy, who lives in Paradise, Florida. She alludes to something dodgy going on and "mysterious happenings at night". Puller goes down to Florida to visit his aunt, but when he gets there he discovers that she has recently deceased, having drowned in her backyard in what the police have decided was an accident. Given the letter she just wrote, Puller is not convinced it was an accident and starts to investigate further. Almost immediately it becomes apparent that there is more than meets the eye to the entire affair.
The Golden Gate Half a billion dollars is required payment for their lives. MacLean chose a sum that may have seemed exorbitant in 1976, but still holds as incredibly high for a tale told nearly 30 years later.
The Golden Rendezvous MacLean's description of Carter being dragged alongside the ship, unable to do anything but inhale salt water, violently resigning himself to his impending doom of a drowning death, had me on the edge of my seat, stomach churning at the idea.
The Guns of Navarone For those who know "The Guns of Navarone" only from the justly famous movie starring Gregory Peck and David Niven, Alistair MacLean's novel will be an enjoyable surprise. "Navarone" is, with "Where Eagles Dare", the Scottishborn MacLean's best known work in the United States. His story of a daring British commando raid against the fictional German-held island of Navarone is loosely based on a failed British expedition to the eastern Aegean Sea during the Second World War. The commandos must silence the guns of the title to permit the evacuation by sea of British troops trapped on a nearby island. The novel traces the commandos' dangerous journey by sea to Navarone and their struggles to survive and outwit the Nazi occupation force long enough to carry out their mission.

The Last Frontier Michael Reynolds, MacLean's protagonist, is neither a James Bond nor a superman. He doesn't even have any fancy technology. He is well trained and resourceful. His biggest advantages against a cruel and efficient Hungarian Secret Service are an ability to make commonsense decisions under pressure and the heroic help of dedicated friends in the Hungarian underground. The plot has the twists, turns, and betrayals in which MacLean specialized. MacLean's characters are often cynical and without illusion about the causes they serve, yet they are sympathetic and interesting people. The suspense is good to the last page as Reynolds scrambles to complete his mission and escape to the West.
The Lonely Sea The last chapter tells about Alistair MacLean's writing. He doesn't read the so-called literary reviews from people who criticize what they can't do themselves. His responsibility is to those who buy his books. He traveled to various countries and wrote about some of them.
The Night She Disappeared The police in the book seem to mostly follow up dead and unlikely leads, the story follows the investigations, including the interrogation of someone whose been implicated in Kayla's disappearance based on an anonymous tip. The contrast between the investigation, Drew and Gabie's research and Kayla and the Man's horrible interactions really gave a sense of urgency to the story.
The Satan Bug In this all-too-timely thriller, an apocalyptic bio-weapon capable of destroying life on Earth the lethal Satan Bug has been stolen from a fortress-like research center. Special agent Pierre Cavell is sent to investigate this baffling lockeddoor mystery, and he has just 24 hours to solve the case before a madman calling himself an environmentalist makes good on an ultimatum: destroy the research center or he will unleash the deadly plague upon the world.
The Savage Knight Sir Dodinal the Savage is more at home in the wild forest than in the tilting yard or the banquet hall. Keenly attuned to the natural world, but burdened with a terrible rage, he turns his back on Camelot to find peace, or a just death.

Its grasses can cut your arms and legs to ribbons, the rinds of its precious fruit can skewer your thumbs, and some of the predators are bigger than humans. Meteors fall from the sky and volcanoes erupt. Fremont is verdant, rich, beautiful, and dangerous.
The Way to Dusty Death The classic tale of high-octane adventure set in the world of 1970s Formula One, from the acclaimed master of action and suspense.Johnny Harlow seems to have it all: he's good looking, desired by women, and envied by men he's also the reigning Formula One world champion, the poster-boy for the world's most thrilling and richly financed sport. And when Johnny is the apparent cause of the latest accident, he decides the time has come to sort things out. But what he finds has nothing to do with cars, and some people will do anything to prevent him from discovering the truth‌
Undeadly Molly's father summons her downstairs where she meets for the first time her mother's parents. When she was a child her mother became estranged from her parents when they didn't see eye to eye on her choices. She also learns that the man who she's thought all this time to be her father isn't her father at all. Plus her grandparents want her to go off to Nekyia a rich boarding school to train to be a proper Necro. Molly is unhappy about leaving her friends and Rick but she's very upset about being lied to by her dad so she accepts her grandparents offer.
When Eight Bells Toll I really feel this is one of MacLean's best. The first person narrative really brings it alive and the Scottish color is a lot richer than what you get in the more exotic locales.
Where Eagles Dare This classic World War II thriller epitomizes intrigue and white-knuckle suspense. Seven men and a woman, part of a team of British special forces, parachute onto a mountainside in wartime Germany. Their mission is to enter the seemingly impenetrable Castle of the Eagle, headquarters of the German Secret Service. Once inside, they must save a captured American general before Nazi interrogators can force him to reveal secret D-Day plans.

Dark North (Malory's Knights of Albion) When King Arthur faces a challenge for his crown from the reinvigorated Roman Empire, he must call his supporters from every corner of the British Isles. One of these, Sir Lucan – the Black Wolf of the North – has more reason than most to join the coming campaign. Epic: Legends of Fantasy From the creation myths and quest sagas of ancient times to the megapopular fantasy novels of today, this quintessential anthology of epic fantasy is adventurous storytelling at its best. With rich and vibrant world building, readers are transported to antiquated realms to witness noble sacrifices and astonishing wonders. Gathering a comprehensive survey of beloved stories from the genre, this compilation includes stories by such luminaries as George R. R. Martin, Robert Jordan, Terry Brooks, Ursula K. Le Guin, Robin Hobb, and Tad Williams. Inspiring and larger-than-life, these tales offer timeless values of courage and friendship in the face of ultimate evil and express mankind’s greatest hopes and fears.
Fear Is the Key Fear Is the Key is MacLean's sixth novel, but quite possibly his funniest. The moment after reading the first sentence, I was already laughing out loud. The hero, John Montague Talbot, would become reminiscent of MacLean's 1966 British spy, Philip Calvert, in When Eight Bells Toll. Both characters, not at all similar in terms of career path or "secret" history, are oozing with that dry humor which, in the case of Fear Is the Key, makes up most of Talbot's thoughts. One of the funnier moments occurs when Talbot is held at gunpoint. Talbot then compares the enemy's tone of voice to that of a character requesting muffins during afternoon tea.
Fifty Shades of a Princess How does Ann Abrams do it? She covers a range of genres and does them all well. This is a funny book and a clever one. Satirizes the British royal "family business" very amusingly, with a few subtle swipes at the "shades of grey" industry too.

Floodgate The plot is interesting, the writing is witty, and the characters are engaging, especially Lieutenant Peter van Effen, with his many talents and his decrepit car, and his rather fuzzy-minded boss, the Chief of Police de Graaf.
Force 10 from Navarone This thrilling sequel to The Guns of Navarone reunites members of the Allied team that silenced the giant guns of Navarone and sends them on a desperate bid to assist a ragtag band of Partisan forces trapped by two armoured divisions of the German army in the rugged mountains of Yugoslavia.
Goodbye California The classic tale of terrorism, where a criminal fanatic is hell-bent on blasting San Francisco into the ocean, from the acclaimed master of action and suspense. The classic tale of terrorism, where a criminal fanatic is hell-bent on blasting San Francisco into the ocean, from the acclaimed master of action and suspense. 'Earthquake country,' said the Professor. 'San Francisco is geologically and seismologically a city that waits to die.
Greta and the Goblin King Now to gush about this story. This book is like nothing I've ever read before. I'm sure, if you read my reviews, you might hear me say that a lot but let me tell you...this time, I'm dead serious. I mean, just go back to my first paragraph if you need an explanation of why it's so different. Chloe Jacobs has proven me wrong. A Goblin can be sexy, powerful and so damn swoon-worthy. Isaac, who is the new Goblin King, is able to visit Greta in her dreams. Sounds creepy, right? Well, it kind of is (at first). Apparently, by saying his name it gives him access to your dreams. (I do wish there was a bit more explaining regarding this...) He tricked her in to saying his name because, with her being human, she didn't know any different. Big mistake on her part. You hope when you sleep that you get nice, peaceful rest but not when you have someone like Isaac trying to manipulate you during your sleep. We soon realize that his manipulating soon turns to flirting which then actually forms in to him admitting his true feelings and intentions toward her. All he wants to do is protect her. All he's ever wanted to do, since meeting her, was protect her. It goes from being creepy to being insanely sweet.
HMS Ulysses The novel that launched the astonishing career of one of the 20th century's greatest writers of action and suspense an acclaimed classic of heroism and the sea in World War II. Now reissued in a new cover style. The story of men who rose to heroism, and then to something greater, HMS Ulysses takes its place alongside The Caine Mutiny and The Cruel Sea as one of the classic novels of the navy at war. It is the compelling story of Convoy FR77 to Murmansk a voyage that pushes men to the limits of human endurance, crippled by enemy attack and the bitter cold of the Arctic.

Ice Station Zebra I have friends who found this book boring, and I think I see what they mean. "Ice Station Zebra" does not have the non-stop action pace of modern thrillers. What it does have, to an exceptional degree, is vivid characterization, enjoyable writing, and a sustained build-up of tension that enables the reader to miss the occasional hole in the plot. Something I truly love about this book is that there is no fat on its frame: no gratuitous violence, zero sex, no hype. In some ways it strikes me as a model for the successful thriller in its purest form, with everything potentially inessential stripped away, and I re-read it every year or two just for the sheer fun of it.

The Pale King (Audiobook) English | 2011 | ISBN: 1609419758 | ASIN: B004WMBUH4 | 19 hours and 19 minutes | MP3 | 2,59 GB The agents at the IRS Regional Examination Center in Peoria, Illinois, appear ordinary enough to newly arrived trainee David Foster Wallace. But as he immerses himself in a routine so tedious and repetitive that new employees
receive boredom-survival training, he learns of the extraordinary variety of personalities drawn to this strange calling. And he has arrived at a moment when forces within the IRS are plotting to eliminate even what little humanity and dignity the work still has. The Pale King remained unfinished at the time of David Foster Wallace's death, but it is a deeply compelling and satisfying novel, hilarious and fearless and as original as anything Wallace ever undertook. It grapples directly with ultimate questions--questions of life's meaning and of the value of work and society--through characters imagined with the interior force and generosity that were Wallace's unique gifts. Along the way it suggests a new idea of heroism and commands infinite respect for one of the most daring writers of our time.
Yellow Dirt: An American Story of a Poisoned Land and a People Betrayed (Audiobook) English | 2010 | ISBN: 1400169062 | ASIN: B0043UPO86 | 10 hours and 8 minutes | MP3 | 556 MB From the 1930s to the 1960s, the United States knowingly used and discarded an entire tribe of people. The Navajo worked unprotected in the uranium mines that fueled the Manhattan Project and the Cold War. Long after these mines were abandoned, Navajos in all four corners of the Reservation (which borders Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona) continued grazing their animals on sagebrush flats riddled with uranium that had been blasted from the ground. They drank contaminated water from old pits, which had filled with rain. They built their houses out of chunks of yellowcake, they inhaled radioactive dust borne aloft from the waste piles the mining companies had left behind, and their children played in the unsealed mines themselves. Ten years after the mines closed, the cancer rate on the reservation shot up and the babies began to be born with crooked fingers that fused together into claws as they grew. Scientists filed complaints about the situation with the government but were told it was a mess "too expensive" to clean up. Few had heard this story until Judy Pasternak exposed it in a prizewinning Los Angeles Times series. Her work not only inspired this book, which is already a winner of the J. Anthony Lukas Work-In-Progress Award, it also galvanized both a congressman and a famous prosecutor to clean the sites and get reparations for the tribe. Yellow Dirt powerfully chronicles both the scandal of neglect and the Navajo's fight for justice.

The Iliad (Audiobook) English | 2006 | ISBN: 0143059289 | ASIN: B0000545D0 | 13 hours and 33 minutes | MP3 | 817 MB This masterful new verse translation of Homer's classic story of the Trojan War has been hailed by critics as "an astonishing performance" and "a remarkable tour de force." Robert Fagles, chairman of the Department of Comparative Literature at Princeton University, brings the energy of contemporary language of this 2,700-year-old epic, while maintaining the drive and metric music of Homer's poetry, as well as the impact and nuance of Homer's mesmerizing repeated phrases. As a scholar, Fagles praises Homer's directness and simplicity, the breadth of his imagination, and the power of his song. As a translator, he brilliantly captures these very qualities—which makes this Iliad not only a superb literary work, but a tremendous listening experience.

The Name of the Wind (KingKiller Chronicles) (Audiobook) English | 2012 | ISBN: 1469203820 | ASIN: B002A2BO2Y | 27 hours and 58 minutes | MP3 | 1,12 GB "My name is Kvothe. I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I have burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during the day. I have talked to God's, loved women and written songs that make the minstrels weep. You may have heard of me." So begins a tale unequaled in fantasy literature - the story of a hero told in his own voice. It is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.
One Click Jeff Bezos and the Rise of Amazon.com (Audiobook) English | 2011 | ISBN: 145512673X | ASIN: B006063FJ6 | 5 hours and 39 minutes | MP3 | 307 MB
An insightful look at how Amazon really works and how its founder and CEO makes it happen.... Amazon's business model is deceptively simple: make online shopping so easy and convenient that customers won't think twice. It can almost be summed up by the button on every page: Buy now with one click. Why has Amazon been so successful? Much of it has to do with Jeff Bezos, the CEO and founder, whose business strategy and unique combination of character traits have driven Amazon to the top of the online retail world. Originally a computer nerd rather than a businessman, he had the vision to capitalize on the untapped online marketplace for bookselling and continues to discover new marketing opportunities, from groceries to auto parts. He's a calculating machine, energetic, passionate, highly aggressive, and out to radically transform retail. Through numerous interviews with Amazon employees, competitors, and observers, Richard Brandt has deciphered how Bezos thinks, what drives his actions, and how he makes decisions. Anyone in business can learn a lot from the example of Amazon's ongoing evolution. Richard L. Brandt is an award-winning journalist who has been writing about Silicon Valley for more than two decades. He is well known throughout the technology community as a former correspondent for BusinessWeek, where he won a National Magazine Award. He lives in San Francisco.

Using the exclusive Fiske system, you will not just memorize words, but truly learn their meanings and how to use them correctly. This knowledge will stay with you longer and be easier to recall-and it doesn't take any longer than less-effective memorization. How does it work? This book uses a simple three-part system: 1. Patterns: Words aren't arranged randomly or alphabetically, but in similar groups that make words easier to remember over time. 2. Deeper Meanings, More Examples: Full explanations-not just brief definitions-of what the words mean, plus multiple examples of the words in sentences. 3. Quick Quizzes: Frequent short quizzes help you test how much you've learned, while helping your brain internalize their meanings. Churchill's Triumph: A Novel of Betrayal 2008 | ISBN-10: 1402210450 | PDF | 341 pages | 8 MB
For eight days, beginning on Saturday, February 3, 1945, the most powerful men in the world – Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin – met at the Black Sea Resort of Yalta, where in the most momentous conference of the century, they preceded to divide up Europe. This novel, told from Churchill's point of view, takes you behind the scenes and brings you into the minds and hearts of the big three leaders: the dominating and seemingly all-powerful Joseph Stalin, with the largest army, and the mission of expanding the Soviet Empire; an ailing and fragile Roosevelt, willing to make whatever compromises he felt he had to in order to bring Stalin and Russia into the final campaign against Japan; and Churchill, the least powerful of the three, but the most far-sighted, who could not count on Roosevelt as his ally, and could not tame the avaricious Russian bear, determined to gobble up the nations around and beyond it. Like a fly on the wall of history, the reader becomes a hidden witness to these monumental negotiations, witnessing negotiations that would betray the heroic struggle of millions who died and fought in the Great War. Meanwhile, a Polish count who has taken on the persona of a deceased soldier appears in Churchill's suite to reveal one of the great unknown secrets of that time: the Soviet's systematic execution of thousands of Polish officers at Katyn, the mass murder that the Russians eventually blamed on the Germans. His courageous defiance of the German army's occupation of his village, and his village's fate at the hands of the victorious Russian army, serve as a profoundly moving subplot to the larger story. Churchill's Triumph allows the reader to eavesdrop on the world's most powerful men, as they lie, cheat, and deceive each other as they struggle to reach agreement and secure their places in history. All the historical aspects of the story are accurate, down to the last detail, including the spice Stalin put in his vodka. A bestseller in England, Churchill's Triumph received widespread press coverage and reviews: "His portrait of Churchill is as masterly as ever: a wonderful compound of bluster, sentimentality, grumpiness and indefatigable physical energy. There are the usual elegant metaphors... In the tragedy of Poland burning while statesmen fiddled, Dobbs has found a theme worthy of his powers." --Sunday Telegraph "How do you delight the profit-maximising big retailers while at the same time writing something dark and moving? Michael Dobbs knows how...Dobbs knows his sources, but the dialogue is his own: good, clean, moving briskly and underpinned by the record, it conveys historical truth. As for Poland, it suffered all the horrors. Dobbs writes about the country with tight passion, transferring to his fictional village, Piorun, the rape, murder and savage enforcement by Germans and Russians which, so far away and so little regarded, actually happened. The old women weeping, the houses burned down, the bodies left promiscuously on the street are history set out for the attention of novel-readers, memorable instruction in human grief... Furiously told and compelling, Churchill's Triumph is a thinking man's bestseller." --The Guardian

If you literally climb the walls, you are Spiderman. - "Biting the Mother Tongue": English does not come from England. - The word "queue" is the poster child of an English spelling rule so dominant we'll call it a dominatrix rule: "U must follow Q! Slave!" - So much of our vocabulary comes from the classical languages-clearly, Greece, and not Grease, is the word, is the word, is the word. -Emoticons: Unpleasant punctuational predictions "Better plotted than a glossary, more riveting than a thesaurus, more filmable than a Harry Potter index-and that's just Brohaugh's footsnorts... Imean, feetsnotes...umfeetsneets?...good gravy I'mglad I'mjust a cartoonist." -John Caldwell, one of Mad magazine's Usual Gang of Idiots This book guarantees you'll never look at the English language the same way again-if you write, read or speak it, it just ain't possible to live without this tell-all guide. ("Ain't," incidentally, is not a bad word.)

Florence Lin's Complete Book of Chinese Noodles, Dumplings and Breads 1993 | ISBN-10: 0688128459 | PDF | 350 pages | 113 MB An experienced teacher of Chinese cooking and a well-established author in the field (Chinese Regional Cookbook, etc.), Lin contrives here a novel departure from conventionally organized cookbooks. She divides the contents into three kinds of doughs: wheat-flour, rice-flour and those made from beans and other starches, and provides numerous recipes for noodles, dumplings and breads in each category. Much of the volume, however, is given over to fillings and accompanying dishessoups, salads, sauces and a wide variety of casserole combinations. This excellent guide is a large, generously packed volume, less specialized than the title implies and full of cook-ahead and other time-saving hints.
Flip: How to Turn Everything You Know on Its Head - and Succeed Beyond Your Wildest Imaginings 2008 | ISBN-10: 0061558958 | PDF | 320 pages | 9 MB Emphasizing flexible, counterintuitive decision making, Flip calls for a new way of doing business in an economy where conventional wisdom won't get you anywhere "Business today requires new perspectives"—this is how Peter Sheahan, one of the youngest and fastest-rising stars on the international consulting and speaking circuit, begins this essential guidebook for succeeding in the twenty-first century. Sheahan reveals how the world's most effective organizations and individuals distinguish themselves from the competition, instead of running with the pack. In Flip he uncovers what the superstars of modern business have in common: an ability to "flip"—to think counterintuitively and then act boldly, with no regard for "business as usual" conventions. Sheahan explores six major flips: Action Creates Clarity—to move forward you must act in spite of ambiguity. Your action will create the clarity you're looking for. To keep pace with rising expectations, you can't just be fast, good, or cheap. Instead you must recognize that Fast, Good, Cheap: Pick Three–Then Add Something Extra has become the new standard in every industry. To develop competitive advantage, you must Absolutely, Positively Sweat the Small Stuff. To satisfy customers' needs for engagement and contact—spiritual, emotional, physical—remember that it's not just business, Business Is Personal. To win mass-market success, Find It on the Fringe. The way to separate yourself from the competitive herd is to be courageous and create new market space. To Get Control, Give It Up. You cannot command and control customers or the talented staff needed to reach them. Instead you must empower others to create, dream, and believe for you. Sheahan teaches today's decision makers how to embrace change and successfully operate in an economy that runs on new ideas. Those who take on these lessons will be in position to join other "flipstars" such as Richard Branson, Google, Toyota, Rupert Murdoch, and Apple. Stick to what you learned in business school at your peril. . . . The small-world economy calls for a new way of doing business. It calls for Flip.

Choosing Happiness: Keys to a Joyful Life 2002 | ISBN-10: 0060008040 | Pages: 192 | PDF | 4 MB Bursting with creative ideas and brimming with illuminating anecdotes, this concise, joyful, and practical book shows how to find -- and forge -- happiness in the large and small events of everyday life. Based on her more than thirty years as a noted thinker and speaker on personal contentment, Alexandra Stoddard shares what she has learned about the small but significant changes you can make in your mind, heart, and surroundings to be happier day by day. A gentle and fun first step is to quickly write down ten words that define who you are -- perhaps beaches, family, food, home -- and what else? To further expand your awareness, select one word and write down twenty-five words that come to mind. These and dozens of other inventive ideas will help you develop the self-knowledge to pursue happiness wisely and well.In challenging times, it is easy to question whether happiness is a choice. Alexandra Stoddard affirms not only that it is possible to choose happiness but that happiness is the best choice we can make. It is the "first principle" of life that unites humankind because it is what we all desire.Happiness lies in the passions we pursue and in the pressures we decline. It is in knowing how to work and when to play. It is in the treasured objects we keep nearby and in the ordinary moments we elevate into small celebrations. It is in the note we write to a friend and the kindness we show a stranger. It is in the colors we love and the music that transports us. It may be as simple as sunlight on your face; as sudden as a shared smile; as sensuous as a single flower on your desk, candles on your nightstand, or cookies hot from the oven. Happiness is what you make it, where you make it. Happiness is our best choice.
The Oxford Book of American Poetry English | ISBN: 019516251X | 2006 | 1200 pages | PDF | 13 MB Here is the eagerly awaited new edition of The Book of American Poetry brought completely up to date and dramatically expanded by poet David Lehman. It is a rich, capacious volume, featuring the work of more than 200 poets-almost three times as many as the 1976 edition. With a succinct and often witty head note introducing each author, it is certain to become the definitive anthology of American poetry for our time. Lehman has gathered together all the works one would expect to find in a landmark collection of American poetry, from Whitman's Crossing Brooklyn Ferry to Stevens's The Idea of Order at Key West, and from Eliot's The Waste Land to Ashbery's Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror. But equally important, the editor has significantly expanded the range of the anthology. The book includes not only writers born since the previous edition, but also many fine poets overlooked in earlier editions or little known in the past but highly deserving of attention. The anthology confers legitimacy on the Objectivist poets; the so-called Proletariat poets of the 1930s; famous poets who fell into neglect or were the victims of critical backlash (Edna St. Vincent Millay); poets whose true worth has only become clear with the passing of time (Weldon Kees). Among poets missing from Richard Ellmann's 1976 volume but published here are W. H. Auden, Charles Bukowski, Donald Justice, Carolyn Kizer, Kenneth Koch, Stanley Kunitz, Emma Lazarus, Mina Loy, Howard Moss, Lorine Niedecker, George Oppen, James Schuyler, Elinor Wylie, and Louis Zukosky. Many more women are represented: outstanding poets such as Josephine Jacobsen, Josephine Miles, May Swenson. Numerous African-American poets receive their due, and unexpected figures such as the musicians Bob Dylan, Patti Smith and Robert Johnson have a place in this important work. This stunning collection redefines the great canon of American poetry from its origins in the 17th century right up to the present. It is a must-have anthology for anyone interested in American literature and a book that is sure to be consulted, debated, and treasured for years to come.

Marvel Comics: The Untold Story Harper | 2012 | ISBN: 0061992100 | English | 496 pages | EPUB + MOBI | 0.75 MB + 0.95 MB An unvarnished, unauthorized, behind-the-scenes account of one of the most dominant pop cultural forces in contemporary America. Operating out of a tiny office on Madison Avenue in the early 1960s, a struggling company called Marvel Comics presented a cast of brightly costumed characters distinguished by smart banter and compellingly human flaws. SpiderMan, the Fantastic Four, Captain America, the Incredible Hulk, the Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, the X-Men, Daredevil— these superheroes quickly won children's hearts and sparked the imaginations of pop artists, public intellectuals, and campus radicals. Over the course of a half century, Marvel's epic universe would become the most elaborate fictional narrative in history and serve as a modern American mythology for millions of readers. Throughout this decades-long journey to becoming a multibillion-dollar enterprise, Marvel's identity has continually shifted, careening between scrappy underdog and corporate behemoth. As the company has weathered Wall Street machinations, Hollywood failures, and the collapse of the comic book market, its characters have been passed along among generations of editors, artists, and writers—also known as the celebrated Marvel "Bullpen." Entrusted to carry on tradition, Marvel's contributors—impoverished child prodigies, hallucinating peaceniks, and mercenary careerists among them—struggled with commercial mandates, a fickle audience, and, over matters of credit and control, one another. For the first time, Marvel Comics reveals the outsized personalities behind the scenes, including Martin Goodman, the self-made publisher who forayed into comics after a get-rich-quick tip in 1939; Stan Lee, the energetic editor who would shepherd the company through thick and thin for decades; and Jack Kirby, the World War II veteran who'd cocreated Captain America in 1940 and, twenty years later, developed with Lee the bulk of the company's marquee characters in a three-year frenzy of creativity that would be the grounds for future legal battles and endless debates. Drawing on more than one hundred original interviews with Marvel insiders then and now, Marvel Comics is a story of fertile imaginations, lifelong friendships, action-packed fistfights, reformed criminals, unlikely alliances, and third-act betrayals—a narrative of one of the most extraordinary, beloved, and beleaguered pop cultural entities in America's history.
