You Only Die Twice This book grabbed my attention on page one and kept it for many hours. Christopher Smith is my new favorite author.I enjoyed every page and every word.
Waking the Zed Pretty fast and enjoyable read with eerie characters and scenes. I know this sounds funny but whenever I watch a horror movie or read a scary book I remain scared for days. Yes, but I like them anyway. Waking the Zed was nothing short of a fantastic story. The characters were true to life and the story itself though not too long was well developed to give the reader a good experience.
Unforgettable A new suspense saga from a much-loved author - 1947. Kindly, unassuming widow Dorrie Resterick continually finds herself confidante to others’ troubles. She would prefer to keep in the background, but life throws her many a mystery, and once she even found a scrap of evidence in a dreadful local crime – the double murder of two villagers. While the police decided the scrap of paper Dorrie brought to them solved the case, Dorrie was never sure – and when new tenants arrive at long-abandoned creepy cottage Merrivale, the site of the murders, their actions inadvertently plunge the whole village into danger . . .
Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale Though I enjoyed this book thoroughly I did spot a few minor problems (sorry, I can't shut off the nitpicker inside me). With the exception of Kaye, nearly all of the secondary characters aren't given enough space to become very well defined. This is one case where I think a longer book may have made for a near perfect book (and I almost never say
such things). Kaye's troubled friend Corny and especially Roiben would've benefited from more space to become fully fleshed out characters. I guess we can hold out hope for a prequel all about Roiben.
The Wolf Prince (Harlequin Nocturne) A book you won't want to put down. The story starts off reminding me the end of Cinderella as Prince Ruben has his royal ball crashed by a mysterious mystery woman that he just has to dance with and then later learning how late it becomes removes her heels and runs off into the night. This isn't any mystery lady but a princess from a magical realm who doesn't like the prince that King Puck has arrange for her to marry instead of for love. Prince Ruben later learns more about his mystery guest than he had planned upon her return when once of his servants is murdered and the two head to her realm to in search of the killer. All the while trying not to start a war up between the Bright Kingdoms and the Shadow Kingdoms.
The Writing on the Wall When the story began with what seemed endless paper peeling, I wondered why a friend had recommended The Writing on the Wall. But as soon as Beth's tale began, I was hooked. Along with the two accounts uncovered on the walls of an old house, the main character Vera adds hers. She is helping to fix up her sister's summer house by stripping wall paper and adding new and is herself trying to understand the unrest in her own life. Wetherell wraps
these stories in a deep sense of place, the remote woods of New England. Included are subtle references to the importance of the written word, the ugliness of bigotry, and the futility and shame of war.
The Weeping Girl A community is left reeling after a teacher Arnold Maager is convicted of murdering his female pupil Winnie Maas. It seems the girl had been pregnant with Maager’s child.
The Sweetest Dark I first discovered Shana Abe when I stumbled across The Smoke Thief, the first book in her Drakon series. I was immediately struck by her wonderfully poetic and elegant prose, especially considering the Drakon books are historical-fantasy romance novels, a genre not often recognized for its high-quality writing. So when I saw Abe's latest book, a YA continuation of the Drakon world, I snatched it up immediately, no questions asked.
The Smart One When ALL the kids move home at the same time though they have finished college, it's not quite what Will and Louise expected of their smart and talented kids. Though Claire is thirty and Martha a year older, there they are, fighting over
the sink and the tooth brushes. Son Max is in his senior year, but THAT girl he's involved with (Cleo)! We're ready to hate her with her bikini-beautiful body and her casual ways. She wins us over too.
The Slippage The Slippage opens with a party, hosted by William and Louisa for Louisa's brother Tom, who becomes embarrassingly drunk while Louisa hides from her guests. William and Louisa are both suffocating in their marriage. Louisa deals with it by buying real estate and lobbying William to build a new house. William "had put the paddles to his slowly dying heart" a year earlier in the usual way, but now the object of his infidelity is moving into his neighborhood, making neighborhood parties even more awkward than usual.
The Sisterhood The Sisterhood was one of those rare novels where I raced to the last chapter, but hated to see the book end. It had great stories, characters I really got to know and care about, and a stunning outcome.
The Savage Blue (The Vicious Deep) He's forced to make so many decisions, some of them are good while many of them are not. He learns to trust people but we all know how trusting people always comes back to bite you in the behind later on. The amount of things this young, sixteen year old boy goes through in the second installment is mind blowing. The entire book is non-stop action and drama.
The Movement of Stars These are the words of Hannah Price, a 24 year old Quaker living on Nantucket island in 1845. Her father plans to remarry and move to Philadelphia. Hannah, a dedicated amateur astronomer, wedded to her island telescope, is determined to be the first to discover a new comet and win a coveted prize. Moving would destroy her hope of fulfilling her dream. But marrying a local suitor she does not love and attempting to become a proper Quaker wife would be a betrayal of herself.
The Mothers Through the book, Jesse considers the many mothers of her life and of her struggle to adopt. The writing is fascinating and flows entrancingly throughout the novel. The author can be wry and quite funny in places, because this couple does not slip into that special hell for the reader of taking themselves excessively seriously. This book achieves that
delicate balance of re-enacting the very real world of childlessness while maintaining a compassionate but realistic portrait of a particular woman and her husband.
The Magpies: A Psychological Thriller I absolutely adored this book. I was gutted when it came to an end as I felt as if I had truly bonded with every single character and it was like leaving old friends behind. This roller coaster ride of a story made me feel as though I was living the nightmare of having Lucy and Chris as neighbours. This story had all the elements of a truly horrific thriller whilst still maintaining that feeling of "this could really actually happen"....
The Knight of Her Dreams (Dragons and Dreamphasers) When her ex-boyfriend leaves her, Julianna Sherborne thinks it coincidence when she starts dreaming of an engaging man who is everything her unfaithful ex was not. Yet when her dream man begins appearing night after night, she wonders if there’s more to it than a lonely imagination.
The House of Rumour It's a beautifully written novel full of fascinating people and events. I loved the parts in the 40s highlighting the Golden Age of science fiction and reading about the exploits of Jack Parsons (a rocket scientist who would die in mysterious circumstances) and L Ron Hubbard (who would go on to found the controversial religion Scientology), Arnott captures the spirit of the age showing the naivety and excitement of the times. The communes and free love read like the 60s but this was the 40s, a time that wasn't as innocent as some would make out.
The Healing I approached this novel warily because it had been compared to a wildly popular piece of Southern fiction of which I was not fond. I'm happy to report that I found the comparison entirely inapt. Odell's work offers greater subtlety of message and a richer, more authentic representation of people, period, and place.
The Golden Age of Death (A Calliope Reaper-Jones Novel) The Golden Age of Death is the 5th book in the Calliope Reaper-Jones series. While the chapters seemed choppy at first, it soon came together and helped explain the mystery. My favorite part of this series is the character
development - and this one was no exception. From Callie's boyfriend with a dark past as the Devil's protege to a goddess with an attitude - the characters are exceptional and make this urban fantasy series one of my favorites.
The Game After executing a hit on a fellow assassin in Algiers, Victor the world's deadliest hit man is contracted by the CIA for an assignment that will take him across Europe to the blood-stained streets of Rome...and straight into hell.
The French House Loved this sequel, revisiting CC and co was like coming home to a group of friends at my house. Loved it. Enjoyable. Easy to read, relaxing and humorous!
The Fever Tree The Fever Tree is reminiscent of Somerset Maugham's "The Painted Veil." In "The Painted Veil" an English woman follows her husband to the Chinese interior and into a cholera epidemic. Frances follows William to South Africa, where an outbreak of small pox might mean the end of the diamond rush, if word of the disease should get to the investors. The dilemma Francis faces is in choosing between two very different men. Her husband whose radical politics in favor of human rights makes him an outcast or William who awakens in Frances all the fervor of first love.
The Book of Doom (Afterworlds) The Book of Doom is absolutely fantastic and it's the funniest book I've read for older readers in a long time. There's something in this book for everyone, including an assassin monk, archangels involved in dodgy dealings, a boy who's half-human/half angel, a demon with a statue made from the skin of his enemy's children, singing and dancing Vikings, and a demon wearing roller skates and hot pants.
The Avery Shaw Experiment However, admiring something and loving it are two different things. I *admire* the story for variety of reasons, but I *love* it because it's so fun to read the Grayson's POV. He's swaggeringly, charmingly self-confident, but he also has some keen insights into the people around him and is both flawed and good-intentioned enough to make him likable.
Half the book is in Avery's POV, and the more angsty, analytical chapters she provides keep it provide nice palette cleansers. Overall, the voice is funny and smart and light.
The 13th Horseman The first hilarious book in Barry's AFTERWORLDS sequence. Drake has just met the Horsemen of the Apocalypse but is that really the end of the world? Pratchett meets Python in this dark comic fantasy with plenty of action, perfect for 11+ boys Drake is surprised to find three horsemen of the apocalypse playing snakes and ladders in his garden shed. He's even more surprised when they insist that he is one of them. They're missing a Horseman, having gone through several Deaths and they think that Drake is the boy for the job. At first he's reluctant to usher in Armageddon but does being in charge of Armageddon have to spell the end of the world? An apocalyptic blend of riotous comedy, heart-stopping action and a richly imagined fantasy adventure.
Tapestry of Fortunes In this superb new novel by the beloved author of Open House, Home Safe, and The Last Time I Saw You, four women venture into their pasts in order to shape their futures, fates, and fortunes. Cecilia Ross is a motivational speaker who encourages others to change their lives for the better. Why can’t she take her own advice? Still reeling from the death of her best friend, and freshly aware of the need to live more fully now, Cece realizes that she has to make a move all the portentous signs seem to point in that direction.
Suddenly Sexy Scientist Maddie Clarke likes to keep her life organized and on schedule. But when bad boy Sam Hennessy returns home fifteen years after calling her a nerd, her life is thrown into chaos.
Starbleached Plot was very good, and length was just right. The characters were deep enough to create feelings of empathy. Adrienne was a strong heroine, yet not strong to the point of obnoxious. She was a woman with a goal and did what it took to achieve it. She also learned that all is not "black or white."
Sharp: A Mindspace Investigations Novel The world in which he lives is a post apocalptic type world. Where there had been a tech war 60 yrs before. The tech is what created telepaths and other people with different abilities. It has both a furistic and 1980s feel to it. You will have to read the book to understand. There is very little internet and "tech" is outlawed. The book is fast paced and exciting. I will leave it at that.
Rocky Mountain Lawman (Harlequin Romantic Suspense) When Skylar Jamison heads to the Wyoming Rockies, all the army veteran wants is some rest. But as a stranger warns her away off public lands every war-torn nerve she has goes on alert. The ranger who investigates makes her even more wary, for very different reasons. Smart, good-looking, with an inner calm Sky envies, Craig Stone sparks her interest and wakes all her fears.
Plus One Olivia Winters and Ian Donnelly have been friends for years. When Olivia decides to take a break from dating, Ian offers to be her "plus one" for the upcoming wedding season. Olivia is stunned by her new attraction to Ian while Ian's longtime crush on Olivia is quickly becoming more serious. With their friendship on the line, will Ian and Olivia give into their simmering desire?
My Last Blind Date Seriously cute story. Forgot it was a short story and was so bummed when I realized I had gotten to the end. I'd recommend this book.
Iron Hearted Violet Told through the eyes of the court storyteller, Iron-Hearted Violet tells a tale of beauty, dragons, and the power of the heart -no matter who that heart belongs to. Even though I don't read much Middle Grade fiction, it's sometimes a nice change from everything else out there, and I can really appreciate the simplicity of these types of fairy tale-esque novels. And Iron-Hearted Violet does an excellent job of sticking with the "theme" but giving it a little something different.
Little Girl Lost The book is not fast paced, though, despite some very good chasing scenes. It is not a problem for me, since I like this kind of thrillers as well, but if you don't, maybe this is not the book for you. Lucy is a great character, a very enjoyable human being, with a sad story and an incredible way to connect to children. I would love to read more about her.
Layover Rules Anyone who has read the Fade trilogy knows what an excellent author Kate Dawes is. However, if you were expecting this book to be along the same lines as Max and Olivia's exploits, you are in for a shock!! This book is, as you would expect, brilliantly written. Sam and Blair are great characters and their relationship will have you screaming at the book for them to open their eyes and sod the rules!!
Lasting Damage I am an unabashedly enthusiastic fan of her Waterhouse/Zailer books. My favorite eccentric detectives are again faced with a nesting doll of a mystery where truth and lies are indistinguishable and dysfunctional families are the norm. Have you ever had a book you can barely bring yourself to read since that means you would finish it too soon? I'm trying to make it last but am failing miserably. Sophie Hannah and Kate Atkinson are my two favorite crime writers today - do yourself a favor and get acquainted!
Lash: Broken Angel Book 1 I've read alot of books about variety of angels~Fallen, Guardian, and Serph but this book by far exceeds expections from beginning to end. I could not stop reading this book because I had to know what happened next. Lash is Alpha Male with broken and rough edges that doesn't follow the rules heavenly or earthly. Watching Lash go thru a gambit of emotions throughout the book had me in tears. I applaud the author for their creativity and craftsmanship of the angel lore.
Inhale, Exhale With all the New Adult novels coming out almost daily, I have to admit that most of the stories have become repetitive for me. So, while the summary and teasers the author put out for this book caught my eye, I truly was not expecting much from it. But that was my mistake because Ms. Ross delivers not only with a beautifully written story but what one that stands out in the crowd.
Imperial Clock (The Steam Clock Legacy) Facing a time of great turmoil across the Empire, Meredith and Sonja McEwan are the teenaged daughters of a disgraced scientist in Southsea, England. They've grown so close, so insular over the years, despising the world that despises them is all they know. But things are changing. Sonja has caught the eye of a dashing young teacher, and is
falling in love, while Meredith, jealous, throws herself into solving the mystery of a powerful secret society in London, with devastating consequences.
Hunter On a dark and stormy night Tatyana's car breaks down and wouldn't you know it, no cell service. She feels like she is in a horror movie as she decides what to do about getting help. She is on her way to her brother Dimitre's house and now wishes she had told him she was coming as he would be looking for her. Tatyana and her brother are very close and ever since he met his new love Annali, she has not seen him as much she understands that he is in love but she feels this need to see him again. As she walks, jumps and dances to keep warm she hopes she finds his place before she freezes to death.
Frozen in Time: An Epic Story of Survival and a Modern Quest for Lost Heroes of World War II This story was beautifully told and truly showed the valor and strength of spirit of some little known heroes. I hope this book will immortalize them as they deserve. You can feel the involvement of the author all through this story. A phenomenal storyteller!
Fire and Ice Six months after the defeat of King Harald at Senlac Hill near Hastings, the English and Danes are still resisting Norman rule. For the beautiful Juliana and her family residing in sleepy Bertone (Barton) life would never be the same again. Sir Richard de Gant has sent his men to take the small Lincolnshire town by force. Juliana witnesses her father’s death when he perishes at the point of a Norman sword after being provoked by their outrageous demands. Juliana and her mother remain in the Hall and when Sir Richard makes his way to the town and claims it as his own, he also claims Juliana as his prize.
Fall of Night: The Morganville Vampires Sometimes I truly believe authors enjoy torturing readers, and with the way FALL OF NIGHT ended, I have to think Rachel Caine is no exception to that rule. I just cannot even begin to imagine what those events will mean in the next installment. I've said this several times throughout this series whenever she would throw us for a loop, but honestly this time around it's looks to be the game changers of all game changers. Even if the rest of FALL OF NIGHT had not been fantastic, I still would be as desperate to get my hands on the next installment.
Everybody Has Everything
Everybody has Everything has some poignant thoughts on life, love and marriage, but I found myself unable to connect to the two main characters. I could however relate to their relationship struggles which I found the most fascinating aspect of this novel and many of the relationship observations were bang on or made me sit back and think for a few moments before continuing.
Decadence Wow! This book is hot! Beginning to end, this book satisfies! I am so glad I pre-ordered it on my kindle! EJD gets better with each book, and never lets me down!
Death on a Pale Horse: Sherlock Holmes on Her Majesty's Secret Service This tale is told in the authentic Dr. John H. Watson voice - readers will forget they are not reading an original Conan Doyle adventure. There are little Doyle touches, too: I know the author to be a careful and diligent writer, so when, in one chapter, Dr. Watson describes in detail being shot in the right shoulder, and, in the next, Holmes remarks on Watson's injured left arm, one can only assume this to be a sly homage to Doyle's apparent confusion.
Dead River My friends and I are spending prom weekend at a remote wooded cabin on the Dead. The Dead River.
Cloner When Alec and Lisa Wildmore move to the pretty Somerset village of Lodsham, they anticipate a rural idyll. Newly pregnant, with one adorable toddler already, Lisa is confident that the countryside is the best place to raise her family she embodies the good life.
Bristol House This vision, along with the strange black and white mural that covers the entire wall of her new bedroom, sets her on a different investigative path that spans centuries and uncovers a relationship between the past and present day events. While meeting with an archivist from the British Museum, Annie meets Geoffrey Harris who happens to be a dead ringer for the monk who had appeared in her back room! Geoff, a television journalist who focuses his exposes on politicians and other elected officials, is intrigued by the events that have transpired and joins Annie in her pursuit for answers to the mysteries.
Clean: A Mindspace Investigations Novel I really enjoyed this urban fantasy and will be looking for more by the author. I really want more about these characters too and hope things get better for the main character.
Cast a Pale Shadow Nicholas Brewer, a photographer, moves from town to town and woman to woman. A sensitive young man, who is drawn to women that seem down on their luck, he is prone to losing huge chunks of time. He is so used to waking up and having it seem as if months had gone by that he doesn't even freak out anymore when it happens. For him, it's a normal part of life.
Baker Towers This novel is so well written, there is something for everyone inside. The book follows the lives of a single family living in a small town in Pennsylvania from the 1940's through the 60's. Each chapter singles out one member of the family, telling the story from that character's perspective. We see how each family member grows and matures, and how the ever changing world around them effects each one, and the direction that their life takes.
Aunt Dimity and the Lost Prince It’s a cold, dreary February in the sleepy village of Finch and Lori Shepherd has two stir-crazy seven-year-old boys on her hands. So when her good friend Bree Pym suggests an outing to Skeaping Manor, the bizarre Jacobean-houseturned-museum, Lori leaps at the chance. There she meets Daisy Pickering, a sweet (if a little odd) nine-year-old dressed in a shabby pink parka who regales Lori with a wild tale about the Russian aristocrats who once owned the priceless silver pieces on display.
An Eighty Percent Solution (CorpGov) CEO Nanogate works closely with other mega-corporate magnates to control everything in their path. Together they suborn governments, police, and anything else barring their way to greater profits.
American Tropic Through his genius words, Key West becomes a luscious, multifaceted land and sea character with the mystery of Shangri-La and the sexiness of Hedy Lamar. I loaned the book to a friend who immediately said he wanted to visit Key West and literally started Googling travel arrangements. Think I'll tag along.
A Study in Seduction (A Daring Hearts Novel) There was much to like about this book. I love mathematics, so I enjoyed solving some of the puzzles right along with the characters. I also enjoyed Alexander's interactions with his siblings, Sebastian and Talia, and Lydia's relationship with her sister, Jane. It was also nice to see an educated heroine and a hero who fully supports her endeavors.
A Passion for Pleasure (A Daring Hearts Novel) What I love the most about Nina Rowan’s books is the tapestry of emotions that she weaves with her words. The emotions of the characters are palpable, and you’ll experience the story with its twists and turns right along with the them. Her plots are written in bright technicolor with colors added that you didn’t even know were part of the literary palette until she revealed them, and then you’ll wonder why all books don’t have the same depth of texture to them. She paints a setting with such vibrancy that you can not only imagine it in your mind’s eye but almost reach out and touch it. Rowan is an author not to be missed, and even if you have never read a historical romance, this series should be on your “to be read list.” You just might discover a new genre.
A Spear of Summer Grass A Spear of Summer Grass is the story of Delilah Drummond, part of the generation of "bright young things" who, scarred by the first World War, live a fiercely modern and shocking lifestyle of parties, drink, and sex. When Delilah becomes involved in scandal after the suicide of her third husband, her family exiles her from the fashionable world. She chooses to go to her stepfather's estate in the British colony in Kenya. The expats who live there are just as jaded as their counterparts in Europe, though, and Delilah finds scandal waiting for her. She also finds Ryder White, a man who might finally help her lay to rest her first husband, who was killed in the war.
A Man Without Breath (Bernie Gunther) Bernie is sent to Smolensk, precariously held by the Germans, when corpses are discovered buried in the nearby Katyn Forest. Those bodies turn out to be Polish army officers, executed by a shot to the back of the head, and the more the German troops dig in the forest, the more bodies they find.
Wind Chime Point (Ocean Breeze) Wade lost his wife and their unborn child in an accident. Now he is starting to live again, she is drawn to Gabi Castle. He knows he must be patient and careful with Gabi and her fragile state. So will Wade loose his heart once again when he puts it on the line or will Gabi see what is right in front of her? Wind Chime Point is a sweet, wholesome, heartfelt love story! Beautifully descriptive, Sherryl Wood captures the soul of a town everyone wants to call home. The characters are fascinating and real, their struggles relatable and the romance sweet and tender. This is a perfectly enjoyable love story that will warm your heart.
Written in the Stars Believers of fate, destiny, whatever, say that there are many paths to your one final destination. No matter what choices you make you will always end up right where you are supposed to be. Well I guess I took the road less traveled because God knows I’m broken, bruised, and damaged.
Wicked as She Wants To be perfectly honest, I didn't know what to expect when I saw this book would be about Casper Sterling. If you have read the first book in the series, you know that Maestro, aka tortured musician Casper Sterling, started his role there, and finally the mystery that surrounded him was unveiled here. I have to confess that after the first pages I changed my opinion about him, and by the end of the book I fell completely in love with his character.
The Wardrobe Wakeup: Your Guide to Looking Fabulous at Any Age I like this book because it's for real people, not some fantasy model. It's also an enjoyable read. I'm re-reading it now as I go through my closet to purge, reorganize and assemble outfits. Glad I bought it!
Twelve Days - The Beginning To those on the outside she appears to have it all a lovely home, a successful career, a gorgeous best friend - but all of that is just a facade a disguise which hides the true ugliness of her life. There is only one person who knows the truth - her best friend Cole Andrews - and, with his support she gets through her day to day existence - just.
The Woman Upstairs This is wordy, erudite, and probably the best book of the year so far. But it is not an easy read. So tread very carefully...I just can't tell you any more, because I could not live with myself if I ruined this amazingly well crafted piece for any of you that are serious readers. This is literary fiction at it's very finest. But it requires a reader who is up to the task. If you are willing, you are about to embark on one of the most mercurial and profound reading experiences of your reading life.
The Stud Book In the hip haven of Portland, Oregon, a pack of unsteady but loyal friends asks what it means to bring babies into an already crowded world. Sarah studies animal behavior at the zoo. She’s well versed in the mating habits of captive animals, and at the same time she’s desperate to mate, to create sweet little offspring of her own. Georgie is busy with a newborn, while her husband, Humble, finds solace in bourbon and televised violence. Dulcet makes a living stripping down in high school gyms to sell the beauty of sex-ed. Nyla is out to save the world while having trouble saving her own teen daughter, who has discovered the world of drugs and the occult. As these friends and others navigate a space between freedom and intimacy, they realize the families they forge through shared experience are as important as those inherited through birth.
The Shining Girls Perhaps the only criticism I have is that I would have liked a little more info on the history of the house itself but then that would have been an entirely different kind of story. This is truly perfection in a tale of the hunt for a serial killer. It is totally original as well as believable. And the ending ties everything up with a bow. The circle is completed. I would highly recommend this book to readers of crime/mystery fiction or anyone who loves a great story.
The Silver Locket
The only issue I had while reading The Silver Locket was that at times I felt that the transitions between scenes were a bit choppy. I would be reading about Rose at a crucial moment and then find that the next paragraph was following Alex in a place in a completely different part of the world. I found this a bit disconcerting. However, I was able to get used to the flow of the story fairly quickly, and it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the material.
The Magic Shop I've read many of the top popular young adult novels, and this one ranks right up there with the best! Follow Marcus and his sister as they find out their past and their future is not what they thought it was. Many strange and confusing events lead us to the end, and waiting impatiently for what must surely have a sequel!
The Lost Art of Mixing The book also had so many wonderful hints at recipes that it made me want to put the book down and get out my pots and pans and start immediately on a variation of Lillian's recipes. The characters in the story did the same thing. They made you want to stop what you were doing, they made you want to join in the conversation, and they made you want to become long-time friends with everyone involved. I enjoyed every character no matter whether they were causing trouble or dealing with trouble.
The Heiress of Winterwood Amelia was a very strong woman and I love that she is willing to do so much to keep a promise to a friend. One thing that I have realized is that in our culture today, we don't value keeping our promises. Amelia makes the hard decision that she will propose marriage to a stranger rather than go back on that promise. With that said, the one thing I didn't like about the story is I felt she was also willing to break any other commitments she had made in order to keep her promise.
The Hunger Angel What is shocking is that while the rest of the world was was relieved by the ending of WWII, thousands of people of Germanic descent were being snatched from their homes in Romania. In her Afterword, Muller writes that within this group, "all men and women in between seventeen and forty-five years of age were deported to forced-labor camps in the Soviet Union." Why is this not widely known?
The Gypsy Game Six imaginative schoolmates embark on a game in which they pretend to be gypsies. But when one of the boys runs away and takes up with a group of homeless people, the game threatens to become all too real.
The Famous and the Dead (Charlie Hood) Written with the author's straightforward, but somewhat dry, style, this concluding novel in the series is not a particularly easy or enjoyable read. It is slow, often repetitious, especially when past events are recounted. The characters, of course, have been and continue to be memorable. However, this reader, at least, had to struggle through the 371 pages and was not particularly enthralled by the conclusion. Probably the only reason to recommend the novel would because it brings a noteworthy series to a final end, by an author who is a craftsman.
The Dark Road Their relationships with each other and the people they encounter on their journey to a place of "freedom" give us insight into the lives of the rural areas of China. The impact of the local enforcement national policies on the ordinary people is very well described.
The Dandelion Seed Her mother's violent death left Marcelle at the mercy of her lecherous stepfather, until Thomas Mayhew, King's Messenger and attendant to the flamboyant court favourite Robert Carr, offers her protection, freedom ...and love. But such perfect happiness is brittle, vulnerable. A mysterious royal lover, tawny-haired and passionate, leaves Marcelle with child. Kidnapped by the powerful Howard family, the baby is an innocent pawn in a deadly political game and Marcelle's desperate search for her son threatens her reconciliation with Thomas, her health, and her very sanity ...
The Blossom Sisters They do allow Gus to help them in their endeavor and he is on probation. Lots of lawyers and PI's and surveillance from both sides to see who will get what in the settlement.
The Boyfriend App Great read, easy to identify with the story, and just when you think you have it figured out it twists. Great book. Can't wait for the next one!
The Astrologer The Astrologer is an outstandingly strong work. High reading level and non-traditional (but beautiful) language, as well as some mature themes, leads me to recommend this for adults, as well as fans of historical fiction, especially in the 16th/17th century conflict between the Catholic church and the philosophy of rationalism.
The Apple Orchard Against the beautiful backdrop of Bella Vista, Tess begins to fall in love with Dominic. The atmosphere is romantic, but the romance is always in the background and never overpowering. Tess begins to understanding the meaning of family and memories, something that has been missing from her life. This is an easy read and at the same time complex and captivating. A charming story, it's the first in a new series. I'm already looking forward to the next installment.
Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin This book, about the true story of Rumplestiltskin, is so darn clever. I adored the fairy-tale world building and the characters. Shurtliff really breathed life into a tale that I'd barely remembered from childhood. I really liked how having a special gift like spinning straw into gold wasn't as good as you'd think it'd be there's a catch, for sure, and it gets Rump into all sorts of trouble as he tries to find out who and what he truly is.
Rogue Descendant (Nikki Glass) The perfect description for "Rogue Descendant" is slow burn. The story takes its time, but it is never boring. Nikki and the entire Descendant world are reeling from the aftermath of "Deadly Descendant." Konstantin is no longer leading the Olympians, Emma has switched sides and Nikki seems to be on everyone's hit list. To make matters worse, Jamaal and Nikki are still on the outs as Jamaal is still unwilling to come to terms with his feelings for Nikki. Part one of this book is definitely the emotional aftermath.
Rock With Me I cannot tell you how much I love this book. It is just another SMASH HIT in the series... Kristen never ceases to amaze me with her depth of characters and her creativity. Leo and Sam are so perfect for each other... You will find yourself VERY VERY VERY frustrated with both of them at times an then you turn to the next chapter or even next
page and start swooning all over again! This is the gift of Kristen's writing. I found myself wanting to rip my hair out in frustration a few times because Sam was so freaking head strong and she just couldn't get past things at times... Leo was challenging and so cocky and assertive. But I don't think Sam ever stood a chance against Leo's power of seduction and persuasion...
Promises, Promises I really enjoy reading an author's first book, especially one as fun as Promises, Promises. From the beginning you know that Izzy is going to be a special character. She has just the right amount of "screwed up" about her that makes you want to befriend her and love her. And Z, what a loveable bad boy. He has just the right amount of "Jerk" to him that makes you want to shake him and then give him a hug. All of the characters have something in their lives, something about their past, that make them believable.
Our Song Olive Bell has spent her entire life in the beautiful suburb of Vista Valley, with a picture-perfect home, a loving family, and a seemingly perfect boyfriend. But after a near-fatal car accident, she’s haunted by a broken heart and a melody that she cannot place.
One More Kiss Dispatched by their ambitious father to snag a titled husband, Beatrice Brent and her twin sister, Cecilia, attend a house party with an array of eligible gentlemen. Defiantly ignoring her father’s wishes, Beatrice flirts shamelessly with Lord Jessup Pennistan, a gamer with scandal in his past and the one man her father has warned her against. But when flirting goes too far, Beatrice suddenly finds herself engaged and, worse, estranged from her family. Though convinced that her fiance’s wicked ways will bring nothing but heartache, Beatrice is powerless against Jess’s masterful seduction and the anticipated delights of the marriage bed.
Not by Sight Kathy always comes up with interesting and likable characters, and I really like the ones she has come up with for this series. She is not afraid to make her books Christian, and always deals with some truth in her books. In this one, the topic of faith is covered. Having faith in God even when things are going bad, even when the bottom has fallen out of your world and you wonder if God doesn't care. Some of her fictional characters in this book hold onto that faith, and some of them let hold of it and are mad at God. This book shows that Christian fiction can be a tool to help and encourage people. I got the message that I really needed from it, and was not just encouraged, but convicted by how easily I doubt when things go bad.
NOS4A2 This is a fast paced book and a quick read considering its enormous size. Joe Hill is a great story teller who, as soon as you set the book down for a break, beckons you back for "just one more chapter". I really enjoyed NOS4A2 and will recommend it to all of my friends who like tales of Horror and also to a few as an introduction to this genre.
Necessary Evil (Milkweed Triptych) Necessary Evil picks up where The Coldest War left off, with Marsh transported 20 or so years into the past by the Lovecraftian Eidolons. It's an odd way to tell a story. Only Marsh and Gretel (now a POV character at times) are the characters they were at the end of The Coldest War. The rest are back to Bitter Seeds form (including Marsh the younger). It was incredible plot twist, but I can't help missing the Klaus of The Coldest War and I can't help wishing we'd learned more about the Soviet's supermen program. We also wind up seeing many of the events of the first novel, albeit in a different light, as Marsh the elder desperately races to change fate (whether of the standard issue or Gretel-orchestrated variety).
Midnight Temptations with a Forbidden Lord (Dangerous Rogues) Tristan Bradley, the notorious Marquess of Castleigh, is a danger to any woman’s reputation. Devastatingly handsome and devilishly seductive, he delights in the challenge of a lovely new conquest especially when she’s engaged to a man he despises. But when this particular young lady asks him to dance, Tristan realizes he may not be the only one playing a game.
Lily, the Brave I really liked the book. It had a nice story line, and I enjoyed reading the book. I hope you write a second one.
Keeper of the Shadows As a crime beat reporter, Barrie Gryffald's work is risky enough when she's investigating mortal homicides. But when a teenage shifter and an infamous Hollywood mogul are both found dead on the same night, her Keeper intuition screams, Otherworldly.

In Broken Places What an amazing read! Michele Phoenix writes a fantastic story of courage, love, forgiveness and faith. She speaks of life events in a very candid way and the reader is inspired to look at their own issues of forgiveness, healing, mercy and grace.

In the Shadows of a Fallen Wall English | May 1, 2013 | ISBN: 0803271417 | ISBN-13: 9780803271418 | 208 pages | PDF | 21,9 MB Growing up, what Sanford Tweedie knew about East Germany was basically . . . nothing. West Germans were our friends; East Germans, the enemy. In 2000, somewhat better informed, Tweedie took advantage of a Fulbright Scholarship to move his family to the eastern German town of Erfurt for the academic year. Far from home and the familiar, with temporary status and a tenuous grasp of the language, he and his wife were curious to see how they would function shorn of all the rules that governed their daily lives-housing, food acquisition, transportation, and even basic communication. As soon as their taxi delivered them to their grim tan and concrete Soviet-vintage apartment building, they knew their education had begun. Learning about life in the former East Germany, amid the feverish embrace of Western culture and the tenacious legacy of a totalitarian past, Tweedie comes to understand the deeper cultural assumptions through which Americans view the larger world. Part travelogue, part history, part cultural critique, all thoroughly engrossing, the story of his yearlong experience is one of dislocation and accommodation, making a German town his own and now ours.

The Top Gear Story: The 100% Unofficial Story of the Most Famous Car Show...In the World ISBN: 1857826620 | 2012 | EPUB | 276 pages | 2 MB The full story of the unstoppable rise of Clarkson, Hammond, May, and the Stig—and how they created one of the most famous TV shows of the 21st century Reaching a peak in the 1990s thanks to presenter Jeremy Clarkson, the original series faced the axe in 2001 but Clarkson and producer Andy Wilman successfully pitched a new format to BBC bosses and Top Gear returned to become the irreverent, funny, and often controversial show we now know and love. The addition of Richard Hammond and James May completed the Top Gear dream team and ratings soared as viewers tuned in to see the latest Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, arguments over the Cool Wall, and Power Laps by the mysterious Stig. Recent seasons have been defined by their madcap challenges with predictably hilarious results. Hour-long specials such as the 1,000-mile journey across Africa in cars bought for less than $2,500, and a race to the magnetic North Pole in which Clarkson and May became the first people to drive a motor vehicle to the Pole, have cemented Top Gear's reputation as much more than just a car show. But the show's most shocking moment came in 2006, when Hammond suffered serious head injuries while driving a Vampire turbojet drag racing car at over 300mph. From a humble beginning as a 1970s car show, to achieving world domination, this is the full story.

The Tender Cut: Inside the Hidden World of Self-Injury Published: 2011-08-22 | ISBN: 0814705065, 0814705073 | PDF | 264 pages | 3 MB Cutting, burning, branding, and bone-breaking are all types of self-injury, or the deliberate, non-suicidal destruction of one’s own body tissue, a practice that emerged from obscurity in the 1990s and spread dramatically as a typical behavior among adolescents. Long considered a suicidal gesture, The Tender Cut argues instead that self-injury is often a coping mechanism, a form of teenage angst, an expression of group membership, and a type of rebellion, converting unbearable emotional pain into manageable physical pain. Based on the largest, qualitative, non-clinical population of self-injurers ever gathered, noted ethnographers Patricia and Peter Adler draw on 150 interviews with self-injurers from all over the world, along with 30,000-40,000 internet posts in chat rooms and communiquÊs. Their 10-year longitudinal research follows the practice of self-injury from its early days when people engaged in it alone and did not know others, to the present, where a subculture has formed via cyberspace that shares similar norms, values, lore, vocabulary, and interests. An important portrait of a troubling behavior, The Tender Cut illuminates the meaning of self-injury in the 21st century, its effects on current and former users, and its future as a practice for self-discovery or a cry for help.
Mayan Calendar Prophecies: Predictions for 2012-2052: What the Mayan civilization's history and mythology can tell us about our future 012 | ISBN-10: 1480032581, 1300266465 | 240 pages | EPUB, MOBI, PDF | 5,7 MB Mayan Calendar Prophecies takes a look at the science behind the Mayan calendar, prophecies and mythology. The Maya believed multiple cycles governed civilization. They created various calendars to track these cycles. Their short count calendar tracked a 256-year cycle believed to control epidemics, famines, warfare and more. Scientists have found a 250-year solar cycle that also appears to affect epidemics, famines, warfare and more. Their long count calendar tracked a 5000-year cycle related to natural disasters and cosmic catastrophes. Scientists have also discovered that the Earth is subjected to periodic bombardment by comets, asteroids, and other space debris that plunges the world into long periods of darkness and cold. Mayan mythology appears to record such events and in some instances even the exact dates on which these catastrophes occurred in the past. By comparing these dates with evidence from multiple scientific disciplines including ice core records, sedimentary records, and climate records, Mayan Calendar Prophecies unveils the truth about civilization's darkest days. And what may lie ahead in the future.

After Daybreak: The Liberation of Belsen, 1945 ISBN: 1844135403 | 2006 | EPUB | 272 pages | 2 MB “The things I saw completely defy description.” When British troops entered Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in April 1945, they uncovered scenes of horror and depravity that shocked the world. But they also confronted a terrible challenge — inside the camp were some 60,000 people suffering from typhus, starvation and dysentery, who would die unless they received immediate medical attention. After Daybreak is the story of the men and women who faced that challenge — the army stretcher-bearers and ambulance drivers, medical students and relief workers who worked to save the inmates of Belsen — with the war still raging and only the most primitive drugs and facilities available. It was, for all of them, an overwhelming experience. Drawing on their diaries and letters, Ben Shephard reconstructs events at Belsen in the spring of 1945, from the first horror of its discovery through the agonizing process of trying to save the survivors. By the end of June, some 45,000 people had survived, but another 14,000 had not. Should we, therefore, see the relief efforts as an epic of medical heroism — as the British believed? Or was the failure to plan for Belsen, and the undoubted mistakes that were made there, further evidence of Allied indifference to the fate of Europe’s Jews — as some historians now argue? After Daybreak is a powerful and dramatic narrative, full of extraordinary incidents and characters. It is also an important contribution to medical history.
Spielberg: The Man, the Movies, the Mythology ISBN: 0878331484 | 2002 | EPUB | 304 pages | 2 MB Based on more than a half dozen interviews with the director himself, this unauthorized biography recounts Spielberg's childhood, education, career, philanthropic and charitable endeavors, and his extremely private personal life. This updated edition explores Spielberg's latest filmmaking efforts, from Schindler's List to Men in Black 2. Author's correction of the Library Journal review of Spielberg: The Man, the Movies, the Mythology by Frank Sanello (me). The Library Journal review erroneously says of my Spielberg bio: The book has too many sneering asides on critics and performers, doesn't give enough detail on individual films, and quotes Look magazine in 1979 (it ceased publication years earlier). The above statement about Look ceasing publication years before I quoted in my Spielberg bio the revived Look magazine in 1979 is inaccurate. According to Wikipedia, Hachette Filipacchi Medias brought back Look, The Picture Newsmagazine in February 1979 as a bi-weekly in a slightly smaller size. It lasted only a year. Please correct the Library Journal Review's inaccurate criticism. Did you know that Library Journal reviews are written by non-professional book critics, usually people whose only qualification is being a voracious reader. In the past, before I became the author of 20+ books sold on Amazon, I reviewed books for the Los Angeles Daily News and the Chicago Tribune as a freelance journalist. This is not the first time an amateur Library Journal reviewer panned one of my books citing information that was factually correct. The reviewer's claim that Look magazine went out of business before the quote I attributed to the resurrected Look is just the most egregious error of many by the Library Journal. Publishers Weekly, which employs professional book critics, gave my Spielberg bio a glowing review!

Flourishing: How to Achieve A Deeper Sense of Well-Being, Meaning, and Purpose - Even When Facing Adversity ISBN: 1844882721 | 2011 | EPUB | 463 pages | 1 MB At a time of deep crisis the notion of flourishing seems unimaginable. However, distinguished psychologist Maureen Gaffney believes passionately that not only is it possible for us to flourish, but in an increasingly uncertain world, it is essential that we plan to do so. Flourishing is about achieving a deeper sense of well-being, meaning and purpose despite, and indeed very often because of, adversity. Indeed, Maureen Gaffney explains that adversity can be a positive turning point in our lives if we decide that our goal is not merely returning to the status quo, but having better lives. Her message is that we can do this and in this exciting and innovative book she shows us how. Drawing on her vast experience of working with people and organizations, and on a fascinating body of recent research, Maureen Gaffney has written a gripping, stimulating and inspiring manifesto on how to flourish and why we need to. Learning to flourish—and helping others to flourish—is the most powerful and worthwhile investment we can make in our own well-being and in our country's future.

Cry Havoc ISBN: 1843584034 | 2011 | EPUB/MOBI | 352 pages | 3 MB/3 MB For the first time since he was released from five years' incarceration in some of Africa's toughest prisons, making worldwide headlines, Simon Mann breaks his silence to tell everything
Simon Mann's remarkable firsthand account of his life reads like a thriller, taking readers into the world of mercenaries and spooks, of murky international politics, big oil and big bucks, action, danger, love, despair, and betrayal. On March 7, 2004, former SAS soldier and mercenary Simon Mann prepared to take off from Harare International Airport. His destination was Equatorial Guinea; his was intention to remove one of the most brutal dictators in Africa in a privately organized coup d'etat. The plot had the tacit approval of Western intelligence agencies and Mann had planned, overseen, and won two wars in Angola and Sierra Leone. So why did it go so wrong? Here he reveals the full involvement of Mark Thatcher in the coup d'etat, the endorsement of a former prime minister, and the financial involvement of two internationally famous members of the House of Lords. He discusses how the British government approached him in the months preceding the Iraq War, to suggest ways in which a justified invasion of Iraq could be engineered. He also describes the pain of telling his wife Amanda, who gave birth to their fourth child while he was incarcerated, that he believed he would never be freed.
Disrupting Class, Expanded Edition: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns ISBN: 0071749101 | 2010 | EPUB | 272 pages | 2 MB Clay Christensen's groundbreaking bestselling work in education now updated and expanded, including a new chapter on Christensen's seminal "Jobs to Be Done" theory applied to education. "Provocatively titled, Disrupting Class is just what America's K-12 education system needs--a well thought-through proposal for using technology to better serve students and bring our schools into the 21st Century. Unlike so many education 'reforms,' this is not small-bore stuff. For that reason alone, it's likely to be resisted by defenders of the status quo, even though it's necessary and right for our kids. We owe it to them to make sure this book isn't merely a terrific read; it must become a blueprint for educational transformation." —Joel Klein, Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education "A brilliant teacher, Christensen brings clarity to a muddled and chaotic world of education." —Jim Collins, bestselling author of Good to Great “Just as iTunes revolutionized the music industry, technology has the potential to transform education in America so that every one of the nation’s 50 million students receives a high quality education. Disrupting Class is a must-read, as it shows us how we can blaze that trail toward transformation.” —Jeb Bush, former Governor of Florida According to recent studies in neuroscience, the way we learn doesn't always match up with the way we are taught. If we hope to stay competitive-academically, economically, and technologically-we need to rethink our understanding of intelligence, reevaluate our educational system, and reinvigorate our commitment to learning. In other words, we need "disruptive innovation."
Now, in his long-awaited new book, Clayton M. Christensen and coauthors Michael B. Horn and Curtis W. Johnson take one of the most important issues of our time-education-and apply Christensen's now-famous theories of "disruptive" change using a wide range of real-life examples. Whether you're a school administrator, government official, business leader, parent, teacher, or entrepreneur, you'll discover surprising new ideas, outside-the-box strategies, and straight-A success stories. You'll learn how: Customized learning will help many more students succeed in school Student-centric classrooms will increase the demand for new technology Computers must be disruptively deployed to every student Disruptive innovation can circumvent roadblocks that have prevented other attempts at school reform We can compete in the global classroom-and get ahead in the global market Filled with fascinating case studies, scientific findings, and unprecedented insights on how innovation must be managed, Disrupting Class will open your eyes to new possibilities, unlock hidden potential, and get you to think differently. Professor Christensen and his coauthors provide a bold new lesson in innovation that will help you make the grade for years to come. The future is now. Class is in session.
The ABCs of the Economic Crisis: What Working People Need to Know English | 2009 | ISBN: 1583671951, 158367196X | 144 pages | scan PDF | 12,8 MB The economic crisis has created a host of problems for working people: collapsing wages, lost jobs, ruined pensions, and the anxiety that comes with not knowing what tomorrow willbring. Compounding all this is a lack of reliable information that speaks to the realities of workers. Commentators and pundits seem more confused than anyone, and economists—the so-called "experts"—still cling to bankrupt ideologies that failed to predict the crisis and offer nothing to explain it. In this short, clear, and concise book, Fred Magdoff and Michael D. Yates explain the nature of the economic crisis. Contrary to conventional wisdom, the authors demonstrate that this crisis is not some aberration from a normally benign capitalism but rather the normal and even expected outcome of a thoroughly irrational and destructive system. No amount of tinkering with capitalism, whether it be discredited neoliberalism or the return of Keynesianism and a "new" New Deal, can overcome the core contradiction of the system: the daily exploitation and degradation of the majority of the world's people by a tiny minority of business owners. While the current economic maelstrom has laid bare the web of greed, corruption, and propaganda that are central to capitalism, only an aroused public, demanding the right to health care, decent employment, a secure old age, and a clean and healthy environment, can lead the United States and the world out of the worst crisis since the Great Depression and toward a system of production and distribution conducive to human happiness. This book is aimed primarily at working people, students, and activists, who want not just to understand the world but to change it.

Viking Patterns for Knitting: Inspiration and Projects for Today's Knitter English | ISBN-10: 157076137X | March 1, 2000 | PDF | 120 pages | 20 mb Viking Patterns for Knitting is the result of years of research by Swedish knitting de-signer Elsebeth Lavold, who explored patterns of ornamentation found on Viking arti-facts, such as swords, buckles, combs, and rune stones. Now, by means of a clever knitting innovation (which makes it possible to start a knitted knot in the middle of a sweater), she has adapted these richly intricate knots and braids into gorgeous, fully modern garment designs. The 14 knitting projects include a hooded sweater with interlaced half-hitches; a cardigan with delicate figure-eight knots; an elegant tunic with serpentine ropework; and father-and-son pullovers inspired by rune stones. Sixty motifs are clearly presented in pictures, text, and charts, including the entire runic alphabet and a striking collection of Viking artifacts. Viking Patterns for Knitting is an adventure in Nordic forms with roots a thousand years deep.
Overbooked: The Exploding Business of Travel and Tourism English | April 16, 2013 | ISBN: 1439160996 | ISBN-13: 9781439160992 , 9781439167502 | 464 pages | EPUB | 5,4 MB Tourism, fast becoming the largest global business, employs one out of twelve persons and produces $6.5 trillion of the world’s economy. In a groundbreaking book, Elizabeth Becker uncovers how what was once a hobby has become a colossal enterprise with profound impact on countries, the environment, and cultural heritage. This invisible industry exploded at the end of the Cold War. In 2012 the number of tourists traveling the world reached one billion. Now everything can be packaged as a tour: with the high cost of medical care in the U.S., Americans are booking a vacation and an operation in countries like Turkey for a fraction of the cost at home.
Becker travels the world to take the measure of the business: France invented the travel business and is still its leader; Venice is expiring of over-tourism. In Cambodia, tourists crawl over the temples of Angkor, jeopardizing precious cultural sites. Costa Rica rejected raising cattle for American fast-food restaurants to protect their wilderness for the more lucrative field of eco-tourism. Dubai has transformed a patch of desert in the Arabian Gulf into a mammoth shopping mall. Africa’s safaris are thriving, even as its wildlife is threatened by foreign poachers. Large cruise ships are spoiling the oceans and ruining city ports as their American-based companies reap handsome profits through tax loopholes. China, the giant, is at last inviting tourists and sending its own out in droves. The United States, which invented some of the best of tourism, has lost its edge due to political battles. Becker reveals travel as product. Seeing the tourism industry from the inside out, through her eyes and ears, we experience a dizzying range of travel options though very few quiet getaways. Her investigation is a first examination of one of the largest and potentially most destructive enterprises in the world.
