Shades of the Prairies 2014

Page 1

Welcome from Bouchard Livestock Welcome to the 12th Annual Shades of the Prairies Sale. In the last twelve years, Shades has developed as the premier fall sale in Manitoba and a definite sourcing spot for all seed stock producers across Canada. The offering in Shades 2014 is that front-end quality that breeders have come to expect. There have probably been as many individual animals that originated from the Shades sale over the years that have gone on to be some of the great producers as any seed stock sale in North America. The bred heifers for 2014 are those high-end, well-developed females safe to the leading AI sires in the industry or proven walking herd bulls in these respected programs. The open females possess that style and appeal that breeders are searching for and, in most cases, will come in right at top of the breed for performance. Please call any of the Shades consignors and, of course, all of us at Bouchard Livestock will be familiar with the offering and will welcome your calls. If you are unable to be in attendance, please take the liberty to call any of our cell numbers and we will represent your interest in our usual professional manner. Also, you may register online with DLMS should you wish to follow on your computer if you are not able to be in attendance. Wishing each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and all the best in 2015. - Brian Bouchard

A black blaze hiefer that has all the eye appeal in the world and is built right. Very stout and correct, she is sure to catch your eye and have many friends sale day. Her pedigree speaks for itself with Pokerface and 786T, who both need no introduction. Her dam is a moderate-framed, perfect-uddered female I was lucky enough to purchase from Maple Lake Stock Farm a few years ago at National Trust. When I saw her I had to have her. She has been everything I expected with last year’s bull calf being my high seller to David Ives at Mulvihill, MB. A definite show heifer in the making here.

A very attractive, solid red heifer out of an easy doing female I aquired from MFR and she has been an excellent little producer with unbelievable fertility. As a first-calver she came with a set of twins and raised them both while breeding back for mid January, giving her a powerful bull calf that is working at Bos Family Farms. Then came another set of twins last year and raising them both and breeding back for January again, giving this powerful heifer calf. You can’t argue the fertility in this cow family. Off MRL 127Y, she is cherry red with length to no end, a big top and quarter. A real female in the making here.

Welcome to the 12th Annual Shades of the Prairies sale. Like always, its a pleasure to work with all the great consigners and sales staff, and we would like to welcome the new consigners to the sale! This year we selected a bred heifer and a heifer calf that represent our program well. The predator females have definitely made an impact in the breed by raising front-end calves every year. Our heifer calf will be the first female to sell out of our herd sire MRL Power Source 148Y. We will be calving the first replacement females from him this spring and they look great. Come next spring you will be able to see the half brothers to these females in the Rebels of the West Bull Sale on March 15, 2015. If you have any questions about our offering please give us a call, or drop by for a visit. See you at the sale!

This is a very special offering from the heart of our herd. This will be one of the very first bred heifers sired by Horizon to sell and what a heifer she is! First a bit of history, “Sprinkles” is Brenna & Britt’s heifer; they are able to have two females in the herd of their own to build an education savings. They currently have three bred heifers in the pen and Dad says one has to go! So here she is, from the very top of the bred heifer pen. “Sprinkles” is a powerful, true beef cow in the making. She has tremendous middle and muscle while maintaining a nice sweet front-end, with a great set of feet and legs and developing a very nice udder. Her dam, 441Y, has a beautiful udder and is as deep as they come. We purchased her from 3D thinking that she would cross well with Horizon and it definitely work! When we purchased her from 3D it was with how well we thought she would cross with Horizon and it definitely worked! We find that the Horizons are such a consistent group of animals, bulls and heifers both, very functional and what our customers are looking for. The kind of female we strive to produce and will be a herd bull maker, no doubt.

Her dam IPU 215U is no other then the dam of IPU Red Western 49X (the sire of 175B) and a direct daughter of IPU Pocahontas 52N. 164B is destined to be a foundation female. This is a unique opportunity to add some of the most prolific cow families in the business to your herd with this sweetheart.

Tara is an eye-catching Stubby heifer calf. She is an attractive female that balances femininity and power into a fancy package with lots of hair and is about as deep red as they come. Her dam, a black, hard-working, two-year old, has a beautiful udder. Stubby progeny need no introduction and are proving themselves as great momma cows and Tara will be no different.

Welcome to Shades 2014. We always look forward to this sale and being involved with a great group of consignors in a facility that is second to none. We have brought out 3 breds and an open heifer off the top of the pen that we are sure will be great additions to any program. These are exciting times in the cattle business and with things not likely to change greatly for the foreseeable future there is no better time to add to the quality of your herd than right now. The cattle from this sale have gained a reputation for adding value to the program of their new owners with several becoming donors and leading producers. We hope you have time to join us in Brandon on December 15th and look forward to visiting with us.

A powerful ET Full Throttle daughter out of MRL 390X, the $47,000 high selling female from Shades 2012. 40A possesses impressive length and thickness as well as an attractive profile, sound structure and a great disposition. She has always been one of the very front-end females in her age group and continues to develop extremely well. A flush mate to 40A was one of our high selling bulls in our sale last spring and two maternal brothers will be among the headliners in our 2015 sale. There is power in this pedigree and power in this female and we have high expectations in the future of this super young lady. Her mating to Vision could be well worth the investment here. A real easy-doing Stubby daughter with plenty of power and scale who has been near the top of the pen in terms of performance. She is very solid in her makeup with a big top and lots of hip and middle. If she turns out to be anything like her mother, she will be a wise investment as her mother is a top producer and was one of the feature cows when we purchased the Tessier herd. We didn’t exactly knock ourselves out with this picture as I think it is a pretty average picture of a very good heifer. Her mating to Vision should be very complimentary and could be very rewarding for her new owner. AI’d to Mr CCF Vision on April 10

Shifting gears a little here. We don’t usually sell open heifers at Shades but thought we would bring out a Red Mountain daughter. We are very happy with the Mountain progeny as they were born as easily as we had hoped and possess their sire’s hair and muscle as well as his great disposition. 23B is a well put together, sound-made individual with lots of top and hip and is extremely docile. Her dam was the high selling red female at Simmsational last year and has done a real nice job on her first calf. We eagerly await getting some of these Mountain daughters into production as the Red Rock influence in their pedigree is sure to make for some great producing cows down the road. This is Ruby. I showed her as a calf last year with great success and interest. Now, as a bred, she is more impressive at every angle. Selling her is, by far, the stupidest thing I have ever chosen to do; but I feel that this market demands that we sell our best. For me, selling Ruby is like when Babe Ruth pointed to where the ball was gonna go before he hit it. I strongly believe in what she is capable of doing and where she is headed. Given the right management, she has the hair, type, service, and udder to stand at the top next year. Her early service to Dealer just fortifies her future and locks down the home run. I am retaining the right to flush Ruby in the future; at my cost and buyer’s convenience. **Ruby gets slapped Junior Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Female at Manitoba Livestock Expo.

This high-volume heifer calf is a ¾ sibling to Ruby, anchoring her value and predictability. Haired-up, deep-chested, round-bodied, and feminine; she also has the same gorgeous udder development that is a homozygous trait for Red Rock and Rochfort females. She is super gentle and will make an excellent female that offers a genetic package that is weighted in performance with a throw back to PRL Houston 005H and TNT Whoopi D92. Her EPD’s are impressive, topping out in the Top 1% of the breed for maternal calving ease, just like Ruby. This sweetheart will make a great show project or pasture cow; and either way, she will be a worthy, hard-working investment.

Super stout, broody daughter of Triple R Explosive 5X, the On Target x Mader Blackgold 110S sire we purchased a few years back. She also has a strong maternal pedigree on the bottom side with Full Figures and 505H and goes back to a Windmill cow we purchased at this very sale with a touch of Fleck to back her up. She was the heaviest heifer at weaning with no creep and also has that easy-fleshing trait from her sire. Explosive is a super heavy-muscled bull that has never lost his condition and puts pounds on his calves. She will make a brood cow.

Welcome to the Shades of the Prairies sale from all of us at PLCC. For 2014, we have really dug in and are offering some real gems from the two black herd sires we feel are top of the breed. The black baldy is probably the best bred we have ever sold, backed by the Conray “78” cow family. The other is from a new flush cow and 680S, no guessing here. At PLCC, we will calve approximately 130 cows this year and again will offer our bulls at the MarMac Farms Bull Sale on March 11, 2015. We keep ourselves very busy with grain, cattle and kid’s activities. Feel free to give us a call regarding our consignments, or Brian and staff can handle your needs with the utmost professionalism.

Her dam is one of our favorite old cows, the Red Heat x Mainstream combination is one we really love, they are tremendous mother cows. 78A has above average milk and her carcass traits are all in the top third of the breed. These Hard Rock females are sure turning out to be ideal cows with nice shaped udders. Bred to the calving ease specialist HSF High Roller, she is a front pasture cow for sure. Once again, hard to part with these 680S daughters, but ‘gotta sell the good ones!’ This heifer comes from a Nugget cow we have recently flushed and the group of calves look really exciting. We have always been impressed with the progeny off of her dam, always easy on the eyes off pasture. It was a no-brainer to flush her, she is a tank herself. This 680S heifer has a big hip and rib as you would expect, is fluid in her movement and looks to have a perfect udder like her momma. Bred early to HSF High Roller, the calf will come easy. A fantastic prospect, remember - flush cows make flush cows. Homozygous Polled by parentage, Heterozygous Black AI’d to HSF High Roller 12T on April 19. Safe

Welcome to the 2014 edition of The Shades of the Prairies Sale from all of us at Broken Oak Black Simmental. We are located 2 miles east and 1 mile north of Rapid City overlooking the scenic Little Saskatchewan River valley. We breed solely multi-generational, black, polled purebred seedstock and have been breeding black Simmentals probably as long as anyone in this province. We based our foundation herd on Black Joker x 600U females and still utilize AI extensively. At Wheatland’s inaugural bull sale we purchased “Wheatland Bull 459P”, affectionately referred to as “Sevens”, making him the high selling black bull that day. His influence is still present in many of our females today, and a bull we feel very fortunate, and forever grateful to Vern and Denise for allowing us to own. Our new herdsire R Plus 1107Y has given us some amazing daughters and we are pleased to feature an open and a bred sired by him in our offering. As new genetics become available, we pride ourselves in assessing, and then accessing, those genetics to advance our program to improve profitability for you, our valued customer. This year we discovered an exciting new AI sire called “Tailgater” and just had to try him. We bred most of our heifers to him and a few select cows. Our bred carries his service. Watch for him and his progeny, we can’t wait! The open heifer is a “what you see is what you get kind of female”. She speaks for herself, and, in a word, bombproof! Stop by the stall and have a look. Lesley or myself will be more than happy to explain our program to you.

As I said in my greeting, we’ve been breeding black as long as anyone in this province and having said that, it seems you just can’t predict color! As soon as you think you got it figured out, she throws you a curve! Last season my favourite cow “Rhonda 362R” gave us a black heifer…then a red one as well. Twin heifers just like peas in a pod. They developed nicely so we retained both and bred them and when Brian came to select I thought about selling choice. However, Lesley has always liked the red one and the ones we sell at Shades are amongst our best, so once again I was over ruled, and the black stays and “Red Rhonda” goes to town. Looks like color ain’t the only thing I can’t predict. In any case a pretty good female bred to an exciting new prospect. Check her out, you’ll like her.

An own daughter of the 145N cow, who is another matron around here. She is one of the first blacks sold by Dimler’s and we were very fortunate to have acquired her. Several of our cows and many progeny we have marketed trace back to 145N as she is one of those cows who, as they say, “always brings in a good one”. 545B has been a favourite all summer, and we would be keeping her if not for all her sisters in the herd. Disposition, style, performance and a proven pedigree…opportunity knocks here!

Its ironic that our lead off bred heifer just happens to be off a female that was purchased as a calf right out of this sale. 2A is a smooth polled, solid red female that has a lot of volume, setting a great udder and has a temperament second to none. Her dam is moderate in frame and has a super udder that will last. Dream Girl was her first and she did a wonderful job as she weaned off as one of the heaviest heifer calves last year; and this year she has an extremely good bull calf in the pen off of MRL To The Max. Not only has she raised two strong calves in her first couple of years but is AI’d to calve again in early January. There is a lot of maternal strength and fertility in this cow family. The bull she is bred to has been very popular to say the least, calving ease with growth. Take a look at the Red Mountain heifer calf we have consigned and form your own opinion, she is good! As you can tell, Dream Girl is very hard to part with! A little added bonus is her more than respectable set of EPD’s. This embryo mating possesses some of the top breed-influencing combinations of pedigrees in the Simmental breed today. The Mariah 112M donor has one of the most proven stacked pedigrees available. Power Drive has a long history of siring females that influence their progeny with performance, style and eye appeal. 112M was a high selling heifer calf right here at Farmfair and traces back to the very proven Centerfold female a Nichols Black Destiny female who was also a high seller coming out of Checkers. Captain Morgan caused a stir when he sold for $190,000 but the real story is being written as his calves continue to impress with style, performance and the overall type that people are falling in love with. Broker has definitely rose to the occasion in terms of style and functionality siring progeny that have excelled in the show ring and in the bull pen. He also has sired the loose-made, big-footed cattle that continue to impress the most critical commercial producers. If you want cattle that can go to town ad excel in your breeding program these matins will work.

You will be hard-pressed to find a more proven and productive mating than Ramona and Crosby. When you think of the stamp Ramona has put on some of the breed-leading herd bulls in the Simmental industry, like Full Throttle and Red Power, then what would the next obvious mating be? CROSBY. The Crosby bull had a tremendous influence on the Kopp Farms program and countless breeders came away from their dispersal extremely impressed with the Crosby progeny. If you want to eliminate the guesswork in an embryo mating this could be the ticket. When you think of the breeder acceptance of progeny from Full Throttle and the stamp Red Power is putting on his calves then Crosby on the top side will give you offspring that are marketable and at the top of the chart for performance.
