MIS S IO N
Mount de Sales Academy forms young women in the spirit of
Saint Francis de Sales and in fidelity to the Sacred Scripture and
the Sacred Tradition of the Roman Catholic Church through
a college preparatory education that nurtures the whole person.
Anchored in faith, the community of Mount de Sales Academy is
committed to academic excellence, lifelong learning, moral responsibility,
service to others, and the dignity of the human person.
From the Principal Dear Friends of Mount de Sales Academy, The mission statement of Mount de Sales ends in five words: “the dignity of the human person.” It is a phrase we frequently discuss throughout our daily activities. We live out this concept in so many ways, including our support on life issues, our presence at the national March for Life, and regular visits to the Frederick Villa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

We are grateful for the dedicated service that so many bring to Mount de Sales. Only you, however, can bring your distinctive talents to the operation of this school. It is through the collaboration of all staff, faculty, students, parents, and friends who make Mount de Sales Academy the school that it is. If you have not had a chance to get involved, this issue of the Annual Report of Donors highlights several ways you can put your oar in with our sailor team through the Alumnae Association, the Parents’ Club, or other endeavors. Please consider how you would like to support our mission. Sincerely in Christ,

her beloved Mount de Sales Academy for decades. We were saddened by her death on August 18, 2012. Norma demonstrated her steadfast loyalty to her beloved alma mater through regularly supporting the Annual Giving Campaign. She also made a generous gift to the Capital Campaign for the sisters’ new convent. Little did we know that Norma had much bigger plans. This past fall Norma’s uncle, Martin Wheatley, passed away and her estate was distributed. We were elated to learn that Norma had Mount de Sales Academy in her will for $100,000! This is the largest estate gift from an alumna in our history. Norma’s generous gift will benefit our current students and future generations of Sailors! If Mount de Sales had been made aware of Norma’s planned gift, we could have personally expressed our gratitude. If you have Mount de Sales included in your estate plans, please let us know so we can acknowledge your generosity. F. Truschel Charitable Foundation. Members of the Board of Trustees, Alumnae Association, Parents’ Club, and individual donors generously responded to the challenge by providing the additional $25,000. Reverend Michael J. Roach, former president of the Board of Trustees and pastor of St. Bartholomew in Manchester, blessed the lab as members of the administration, faculty, and students joined in prayer and celebration. Grace Smoot ’15, recipient of a scholarship from the Theresa F. Truschel Charitable Foundation, and Julia Giermek ’14 represented the students who benefit from the lab. Julia stated, “The new biology lab improves our learning environment, places emphasis on the importance of science at Mount de Sales, and increases efficiency during labs, which allows for more class time.” Jeanne Schaible Langeluttig ’84, Alumnae Association treasurer, said, “The Alumnae Association is proud to help with funding the renovations of the biology lab, it shows the impact that the alumnae can have on their alma mater through getting involved and supporting the activities of the Alumnae Association.” Thank you from the Mount de Sales Academy community for uniting to improve the sciences!

Sailors bring home the win: Capital Campaign Phase II Complete! We were in overtime with the Capital Campaign Phase II matching gift, which was scheduled to officially end on March 31, when the final check that brought us to just over our goal was received on April 1, 2014. The turf field was a $1.7 million construction project. The fundraising for the turf field was initiated immediately after the completion of Capital Campaign Phase I, which between June 2010 and August 2011 raised $5.5 million for the convent, HVAC for the 1852 school building, and increased campus security, including the perimeter fencing and entrance and exit gates. Field construction began in June 2012 and was completed in September 2012. It was a fast-tracked project because of the tremendous need for the field. The campaign to raise the necessary funds, however, extended well beyond the construction. The field campaign picked up momentum on November 22, 2013, when benefactors joined together to offer a matching gift. Gifts received between November 22 and April 1, 2014 were doubled through the matching gift. This incentive made it possible for the school to fund this project completely and without taking on debt in just under two years. Thank you to each donor who was a member of the team that helped make this a championship win for the students of Mount de Sales Academy! 7

Rehearsals were held in the small refectory at Mount de Sales, the school day location of music and drama classes. The shared space offers the constant challenge of squeezing students, instruments, and set pieces in one area while trying to keep the temperature at a safe level for voices and violins alike! Finally, after returning from Christmas break, students were able to begin rehearsals at the Mount Saint Joseph Fine Arts Center, the performance space for the shows.

hen I was in eighth grade at St. Mark School, everyone assumed I would go to Mount de Sales because my sisters, Molly ’03 and Maggie ’04, and later Annie ‘08, did. They thought I had no decision to make. That was true, but for a different reason. I chose Mount de Sales because it felt like home. At Mount de Sales, I made tremendous strides as a person and an athlete. I learned to trust my ability, intelligence, and work ethic and developed a deeply rooted self-confidence. I also learned about perseverance and strength from running on the cross country team, never to accept mediocrity through basketball, and how teamwork can bring success on the lacrosse field. After my 2006 graduation, I attended McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland, where I majored in Economics and Business Administration and played on the women’s basketball team. I graduated summa cum laude in three years. Because I had another year of NCAA eligibility, I enrolled in McDaniel’s exercise science graduate program. We went on to win our conference championship, which was the perfect ending to my basketball career.
Mount de Sales alumna and entrepreneur, Sally Grace, received Catonsville’s Business Person of the Year designation.
Week. Peace A Pizza also hosts fun events for children such as birthday parties, field trips, bingo, pajama parties, cookie classes, and craft nights. I want customers to feel at home when they come here. By serving the local community and treating it as a vital part of our success, because of course it is, we have benefited greatly from its response. We celebrated our third anniversary this past December, and I was honored to be named the Catonsville Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year in October 2013. As with the greater Catonsville community, I have tried to incorporate Mount de Sales in my business. I had the pleasure of coaching the JV basketball team the first two years that Peace A Pizza was open. I enjoy keeping in touch with several of my former players, mentoring employees with ties to Mount de Sales, serving MDSA customers, and interacting with fellow alumnae on a professional level. Owning a business in Catonsville, where I constantly receive support from my former school community, has helped Mount de Sales, after all of these years, to remain a home for me.
My family decided to buy into the Peace A Pizza brand that year and we took steps to form our business. In addition to being an owner, I became the business’ general manager. Most of the hard work began after that spring semester while I was finishing my master’s degree. I received my degree a week before Peace A Pizza opened in December 2010. When it came time to select Peace A Pizza’s location, Catonsville was the natural choice. I wanted to give back and integrate our business into the community. I hire enthusiastic, hard-working teenagers and young adults, several of whom are students at Mount de Sales. I consider mentoring them to be one of the most rewarding parts of my job. We sponsor local youth athletic leagues and UMBC athletics, host fundraisers for local schools, donate to charities, participate in local events such as the Arts and Craft Festival, the Taste of Catonsville, and Restaurant 10

The Alumnae Association was founded in 1896. Today, it is comprised of women spanning all generations of Sailors who share a common bond and love for the school. Alumnae bring their children and families back to campus for the Easter Egg Hunt and reunite with old classmates over a Maryland tradition at the Crab Feast. It’s the Alumnae Association that makes such events possible.

They also provide scholarship opportunities for current students. Each year, two $5,000 scholarships and a book scholarship are awarded to well-rounded students who exemplify the spirit of Mount de Sales Academy.
The spirit of the Mount de Sales family is cultivated by the Alumnae Association throughout the year. Kay McElgunn Everett, ’85 P’13 explains, “No matter what year we graduated, there is always a special bond between the MDS women.” Involvement from individual alumnae is crucial in making these projects possible. Procure classroom projectors and docking stations to enable integration of devices; and
•
Fund a mobile lab cart with 20 tablets for initial implementation in the 2014-2015 school year (after these are used for the expanded technology pilot program during the 2014-2015 school year, these devices will be made available to students who cannot afford to purchase devices for the 2015-2016 school year).
Our science laboratories, which were recently upgraded in part by a grant from the Theresa F. Truschel Charitable Foundation, are in need of new equipment. New microscopes are needed to replace the nearly decade-old scopes that can no longer be serviced. Twenty-four microscopes for the new lab will cost almost $3,000. Also, probes for the new Vernier science tablets are necessary to provide the capability to utilize the tablets for additional experiments and lab analysis. At $100 per set, $2,400 is needed for 24 sets to outfit the science lab. As we continue to address our students’ educational resources, we thoughtfully consider all tools and prayerfully request the support of our benefactors. Please give to the Annual Giving Campaign using the enclosed envelope or by visiting mountdesales.org and clicking Donate. For more information, please contact Beth Saverino ’87 at 410.744.8498 x139 or esaverino@mountdesales.org. Each and every gift makes a difference right away!

Campaign Phase II, which resulted in installation of the beautiful turf field in front of the school; and a contribution toward the renovation of the biology and chemistry labs in 2013. One of the benefits of participation in Parents’ Club sponsored events is the joy and satisfaction of working with others for the benefit of Mount de Sales Academy. But, perhaps the most important benefit at many of these events is the opportunity to work side by side with our daughters in their journey toward Catholic womanhood.
