Class of 2016 captured so well in their Twisted Tunes lyrics, "The world's going to see Mount de Sales in me...for a life should be measured in love, faith, and friends.” Many times over the past four years, we watched the Class of 2016 live these convictions with striking optimism. Most recently they traveled to a prayer rally on the steps of the Supreme Court to support the Little Sisters of the Poor during their journey to the Supreme Court and beyond. These students were actively living a message of love and hope for a culture that allows faith to flourish.

GRATITUDE & APPRECIATION for a job well done!

BY: CHRISTOPHER P. BROWN, ESQ. P’04 ’08, MDSA BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEMBER

J

oseph Geier P‘08 ‘12 ‘17 agreed to join the Board of Trustees in 2006. He swiftly began the process of managing the complex

finances attached to a private high school. At the time, MDSA was in transition with lofty goals and heavy considerations. The maintenance of a private Catholic high school is quite unique. Joe added insight and quiet stability as we undertook historic changes. Keeping the school true to our Catholic identity while staying on sound financial ground was an accomplishment worth noting. As a member of the Board, he helped direct the convent construction, HVAC upgrade and enhanced campus security, turf field, and more.

STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE

Financial Feasibility Study Underway

M

ount de Sales Academy has begun the Financial Feasibility Study. This will

assess the capacity of our MDSA community to support the priorities of the Capital Campaign, which are aligned with the Strategic Plan. The results will enable us to make fiscally sound and responsible decisions related to constructing a Performing Arts Building and renovating a portion of the Fourth Floor. The Institute for Parish and School Development (ISPD) was selected to conduct the Feasibility Study.

Joe always stressed the Mount de Sales difference: the growth of students as ambassadors for Christ. MDSA is not just another high school, it is a Catholic high school where faith comes first. As president, Joe supported the MDSA Strategic Plan. With softspoken charm and determined action, he helped guide the technology advances and one-to-one integration. Joe, always concerned with maintaining good relations with the Dominican Sisters, faculty, and parents, helped ensure that this large undertaking was smooth and well received.

During Joe’s administration, Mount de Sales also achieved the historic founding of the $1.1 million dollar scholarship endowment. For the first time, this endowment provides revenue for scholarships as well as a vehicle to add to scholarships by gifts and bequests to create a culture of supporting the MDSA mission. After ten years of service, Joe leaves Mount de Sales well poised for the future, financially sound, and ready for the mission of 164 more years of faithful service.

WELCOME! We rejoice as three students entered the Catholic Church during our all school Mass on April 8, 2016. An additional student, Sonia Lee ’18, was previously baptized and received into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Ellicott City. Following Mass, family and fellow students attended a lovely reception in the library to celebrate this joyous occasion.

he first-ever Cupcake Wars was a sweet success! The proceeds from this Support the Troops Club fundraiser benefited Fisher House Foundation, a

nonprofit that provides military families housing near loved ones hospitalized at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda. Contestants competed in five categories: spring-themed; surprise ingredient; school-themed; Maryland-themed; and most patriotic. Freshman HANNAH YOST won best overall and first place for her dark chocolate Mexican Cupcakes iced with chili-espresso buttercream icing. Her cupcakes were so delicious and impressive that a representative from SugarBakers Cakes, a Catonsville bakery, approached her about a job opportunity. "What I love is people coming together as a community," said Support the Troops Club moderator Eileen Clements to the Baltimore Sun. She estimated that the event raised $1,200 for the Fisher House. Along with the cupcake competition, there were games and scrumptious cupcakes for sale.

EVERYONE Has a Place in the Mission & Vision of MDSA At Mount de Sales Academy, we define Development as, “The meaningful engagement of people in the mission and vision of Mount de Sales Academy.” THE GOAL: to get as many people as possible involved in supporting the mission of MDSA in the way or ways best suited for them. What ways can you serve MDSA?

TIME, TALENT, TREASURE, AND PRAYER Do you have TIME to volunteer? If so, we need you! There are staff members ready to help you find the right fit. We are thrilled to welcome Kim Dignan P’12 ‘14 as our new Volunteer Coordinator. Mrs. Dignan’s first priority is to engage current parents. This is in addition to the Parents’ Club, whose work has been so successful and made such a tremendous impact that past parents mobilized to form a new group, Dads with Grads, providing fathers of graduates with the opportunity to stay involved and give their time. We also invite all alumnae to stay engaged through volunteering. Director of Alumnae Relations Elizabeth Mahon ’07 helps alumnae maintain and grow their connection to their alma mater. Mount de Sales Academy is blessed by the diversity of our community members. Through utilizing the vast and varied TALENTS of current and past parents, alumnae, and other friends, we will achieve great things for our students. Do you love to meet new people? Are you crafty? Or maybe you’re a handyman. From hospitality to campus maintenance, by maximizing the talents of our constituents we save other resources. That means the treasure given to MDSA goes further. FINANCIAL GIFTS meet many needs at MDSA, and there are many ways to give. You can make an annual outright gift through the envelope provided in this publication, donate online, or give as a response to the requests that come throughout the year. Unrestricted support to the Annual Giving Campaign is critical to our ability to maintain our campus and provide for the needs of our students. If a particular area of interest resonates with you, such as the Capital Campaign or scholarship support, please know that all gifts help further our mission. The gift we hope everyone will consider, and one which you can give every day, is PRAYER. Mount de Sales Academy has survived very difficult financial times. This survival story is rooted in the commitment of our community, especially through their prayer. It was prayer that led us to ask the Dominican Sisters to come to MDSA, and it was prayer that changed their initial “no” to a “yes.” We are asking you to say “yes” to our request for involvement. When everyone engages in supporting the mission of MDSA, there is no end to what we can achieve! Please consider how you can GET INVOLVED to support the mission of Mount de Sales Academy. If you are interested in volunteering, committing to pray for MDSA, or want to give financially, please check the appropriate boxes on the envelope enclosed in this View from the Cupola. Your involvement is invaluable!

WHY DID MOUNT DE SALES LOOK INTO ALTERING ITS GRADE SCALE? There have been increased concerns from constituents that our grade scale did not fully reflect the hard work of our students. MDSA strives to maintain systematic consistency and rigorous academic standards. Therefore, it was agreed that now was the right time to begin an investigation. WHAT WERE THE GOALS? Before we began our research, the team, comprised of faculty, administrators, and the college counselor, set four goals. We wanted to ensure the MDSA grade scale would: 1. Positively affect all students (i.e. not negatively impact any one group of students) 2. Be a fair and accurate measure of Mount de Sales' rigor

The conference brought technology school leaders and vendors together to learn about how various technology products can benefit schools and districts. Their presentation, Microsoft in Education, shared the story of why MDSA adopted the Microsoft Platform for our one-to-one BYOD technology initiative. Mrs. Murphy notes, “We shared examples of how our teachers use Office products such as OneNote Class Notebooks, OfficeMix, and Sway to enhance the learning process both in an out of the classroom. It was a great experience and we made some great connections with people from Microsoft. Recently, MDSA was recognized as a Microsoft Showcase School!” Please read more about this distinction on our website. 7

n a Wednesday morning in March, 72 Mount de Sales seniors walked with faculty and staff to the steps of the

Washington, D.C., Supreme Court building. The Little Sisters of the Poor, with six other plaintiffs, were scheduled to have a hearing before the Supreme Court. In months prior, the religion teachers at Mount de Sales had informed students of the situation in our country, that people are being required by the government to do something against their beliefs or face fines large enough to cause bankruptcy. In particular, the Little Sisters of the Poor faced foreclosure if they failed to comply with the Health and Human Services mandate that all employers supply insurance coverage for birth control and sterilizations to their employees or authorize the government to use their insurance to do so (the Little Sisters use Christian Brothers Employee Benefit Trust for their insurance, also a plaintiff in the case).

This year, Sister Janet Mary, O.P., received the award. She offers a smile to everyone she passes in the hall and joy to each student in her classes. Teaching biology, AP biology, and anatomy, she brings science to life and helps countless students appreciate the beauty of the Lord’s message to them through His creation. ount de Sales is dear to us. Our friends, our teachers, our classes, our traditions, our memories – they are dear to us. We are saying goodbye to so much. But you know what? We should be grateful that we have so much to

say goodbye to. Our friends support us, our teachers help us grow, our classes show us the world, our traditions keep us grounded, and our memories shape us into wonderful young women. I know I am grateful to have so much from this school.

ow beautiful it was that we could open up to each other, even to people we may have never talked to, in order to help one another grow closer to God and come closer together as a class. We have received so many gifts and

experienced so much in our time at this school, and we will forever carry with us the memories, the friendships, and the bonds that we have formed over the past four years. …Having come together through our joys and our disappointments, our successes and our failures, and our triumphs and our defeats, we cannot help but remain united as the Mount de Sales Class of 2016!

fter several weeks of advent preparation, we come together in the Chapel one last time. The entire school community represents a gathering of people who are seeking God, who want a close relationship with Him, and

by doing so form a close relationship with one another. Although it may be unconventional to speak of Christmas during late May, it is a time when our school encourages friendship, faith and service, the core values of Mount de Sales Academy. As Saint Therese of Lisieux says, “Use the gifts you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.”

R

everend Michael J.P. Roach, the beloved keeper of our Mount de Sales Academy history,

will now be remembered in perpetuity through the establishment of the endowed Reverend Michael J.P. Roach Scholarship. Father Roach, MDSA Trustee Emeritus, has been associated with MDSA since boyhood. As a child he grew up in the nearby Ten Hills community and was an altar server for the Visitation Nuns’ masses in the Chapel of St. Francis de Sales. Currently, Father Roach is Pastor at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church in Manchester and is an adjunct faculty member of Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg.

Despite his busy schedule, Father

Roach continues to make time for MDSA, which is emblematic of his commitment to service.

It

was Father Roach’s dedication to serving others that inspired The Aureus Foundation to establish a scholarship at Mount de Sales Academy to recognize Father Roach and reward students who are similarly service oriented. The recipient of the Reverend Michael J.P. Roach Rachel Huber '17 and Lou Rehak

“Mrs. Harris was a tireless supporter of life and fully dedicated herself to the belief that all human life is sacred. ALUMNAE NEWS

Alumnae

Spotlight L’Oreal THOMPSON PAYTON ’04 L'Oreal highlights how her time at Mount de Sales Academy in the early 2000's helped shape her confidence and leadership abilities. We appreciate L'Oreal's self-nomination for this edition of the Alumnae Spotlight.

A

s a media and marketing professional, it’s hard to believe there was a time not too long ago that I was shy and quiet. In middle school, I was bullied for being smart, so I mostly kept to myself. Attending Mount de Sales, however, not only helped me find my voice, but gave me the confidence and courage to use it for causes I am passionate about. It was at Mount de Sales that I began my journalism career as the editor-in-chief for both the school newspaper (The Anchor) and the literary magazine (Images). It was the first time that I recognized writing as a platform to share my ideas and opinions and bring attention to important causes, such as self-esteem, body image, and diversity. At the time, I was subscribing to nearly every teen magazine there was, and I couldn’t help but notice all of the covers featured the same skinny white pop stars. I began to wonder, “If I don’t look like them, does that mean there’s something wrong with me?” And then I realized there are other girls who probably felt the same way. It was then that I decided, along with the encouragement from my English teacher, Mrs. Patricia Marlatt, to devote my career to empowering young women through writing. I didn’t quite understand what it meant to be a feminist at the time, but it’s clear to me now that Mount de Sales 26

helped strengthen the importance of using my voice, skills, and talents to advocate for what I believe in. It’s the voice that helped me earn several awards as a professional journalist, and it’s the voice I use daily in my current role as the media relations manager for Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana. After seven years as a reporter and editor, I began to feel burned out dealing with breaking news, managing social media accounts, and trying to make stories “go viral.” So I decided to get back to my roots of helping girls and found a fulfilling career working with the Girl Scout organization. In my position, I help young girls find their voices. Whether it’s coaching a teen Girl Scout for a TV interview about her anti-bullying project or interviewing a 6-year-old Girl Scout Daisy who donated Girl Scout Cookies to homeless children, I enjoy spreading the word about all of the amazing and inspiring work our girls are doing to make the world a better place. I’m so grateful for the learning experiences I had to become a leader at Mount de Sales. Those moments helped shape me into the woman I am today. We may not all work for a Fortune 500 company or aspire to the corner office, but we can all use our voices to make a difference right where we are. It’s the Sailor way. Alums, follow L'Oreal's lead and nominate yourself for a future Alumnae Spotlight. To learn more about L’Oreal and her adventures in the Windy City, visit LTintheCity.com.

ach year at graduation, a few seniors are privileged to share in the legacy that their mother or grandmother, who also graduated from Mount de Sales left behind. They step

through those windows and into the history of MDSA. Their class photo will hang in the same senior hallway as their mother’s or grandmother’s class. We celebrated five legacies in the Class of 2016 and the many future generations that will send their daughters to Mount de Sales in the years to come!

Dads, are you sad that your time with MDSA has drawn to a close? It doesn't have to. A group of "alumnae fathers" is forming to continue the strong bond that was formed with MDSA during your time as a parent. The goal of Dads with Grads is to continue fellowship, involvement, and service to MDSA for the benefit of our students. There is no commitment with this group, the level of involvement is completely up to you. If you are interested in more information or would like to be added to an email group that provides social and service opportunities, please contact the founding fathers of DADS WITH GRADS: Tom Campbell P’14 at tomcam49@att.net; Tim Dignan P’12 ‘14 at tim_dignan@verizon.net; and Anton Smoot P’15 at anton_smoot@yahoo.com. Please join us for our first meeting on Saturday, September 17 at 5 p.m. in Alumnae Hall.

ifty years after the CLASS OF 1966 graduated from Mount de Sales Academy, they returned home for a special reunion. As honored guests, they celebrated with

a reception in the Bird Room and reserved seats in the Music Hall for the graduation commencement. Eighteen women gathered for the reunion. TERESA MALLOY HOLBERT traveled from Ohio, and HELEN DAVIS RIDDLE came all the way from Florida for the occasion! Distance and time may separate the former classmates, but as soon as they were reunited things picked up right where they left off. Their senior year, members of the class of 1966 received a white mug with the Academy of the Visitation crest on it. LYNDA MARCONI NILES brought that cup to the reunion for the Archives of MDSA. As a gift for their reunion this year, the Alumnae Relations Department gave the women a new coffee mug with the logo of Mount de Sales on it. Thank you to all of the women from the Class of 1966 who attended their 50th reunion. It is a joy to have alumnae come back and celebrate Mount de Sales milestones. We look forward to welcoming the Class of 1967 home in 2017!
