Mission Mount de Sales Academy forms young women in the spirit of

Saint Francis de Sales and in fidelity to the Sacred Scripture and

the Sacred Tradition of the Roman Catholic Church through

a college preparatory education that nurtures the whole person.

Anchored in faith, the community of Mount de Sales Academy is

committed to academic excellence, lifelong learning, moral responsibility,

service to others, and the dignity of the human person.

From the Principal Dear Friends of Mount de Sales, Last fall as I was exploring the walking trail to Ellicott City with a group of sisters, I passed an older woman on the pathway using a walker. She looked up and asked if we worked at Mount de Sales. When we answered in the affirmative, she proceeded to tell us that she graduated in the late thirties and that we could look her up in the pictures of the graduates that line the front hallway of the school. She could name most of her classmates and even tell us a little bit about them. It was an awesome experience depicting the strength of the legacy and bond alumnae have to their Academy.

That hallway tells a deep story of tradition. As one walks from photo to photo, she learns much about the changing culture, fashion, historic and economic factors that have affected our country and Mount de Sales Academy throughout the years. One photo has one graduate. Another has 12 students in the highly stylized fashion of the 1920s. In the 1990s, these photos begin to tell the story of dramatic growth in the school, creating an alumnae body in which nearly half have graduated in the last 20 years. Today that section of the front hall is considered “The” Senior Hallway. And as you know or guessed, only seniors are allowed to pass through. In one way, it is a small senior privilege since the hall is very short and provides an escape from the many steps the other classes use to assure they don’t end up in this coveted area. In another way, it is fitting to name the hall for the seniors. Soon they will pass from walking that hallway to having their photo affixed to the wall, forever adding them to the legacy of Mount de Sales Academy. As these spring days unfold, we also prepare to welcome the Class of 2017. The excitement of our incoming students always reminds us that our most precious legacy walks our hallways. Each freshman participates in the legacy of Mount de Sales in a special way, whether she is the fifth generation in her family or the first, adding a new family to the legacy of Mount de Sales Academy.

ailor's memory book returns to her alma mater, t-great-granddaughter, Emily Jordan '13 Emily says this discovery has the “whole family excited!” Of course, she is especially pleased. When Emily first entered Mount de Sales, she felt as though a lot of people had family connections to MDSA but she did not. It turns out that she does, but didn’t know it. We are pleased this discovery was made while she was still a student so she can be included in the legacy photo on pages six and seven. (As this photo illustrates, only a small percentage of students have an existing relationship to MDSA. Most students establish their legacy upon entering as a freshman.) Emily’s favorite parts of the 1911 memory book include souvenirs from the Fine Arts Assembly and musical because she can identify with those activities that are still taking place today. Particularly entertaining for Emily was Helen’s Monthly Report of Scholarship and Deportment. Emily remarked, “There were so many classes including cooking and astronomy; it’s cool and different from what we have today.” Another big difference that Emily noted is class size. The Class of 1911 graduated nine students on June 12, 1911 compared with the 124 students who will walk through the same Music Hall windows on May 25, 2013. Mount de Sales was also a boarding school when Helen was a student and served as the nine month home for students from across the country and abroad. Emily shares, “I always felt connected to Mount de Sales, but now I feel even closer to the school. Mount de Sales has always meant a lot to me and now it means even more.” Emily’s message to students who like her enter MDSA without a family tie is, “You make your own connections here with friends, class, and school. Here everyone is so close!”

Legacies

With pride we celebrate our current legacy students, those with mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, and even great-great-grandmothers who preceded them at Mount de Sales Academy. It is an honor when multiple generations form a succession of Sailors.

Link Past, Present, & Future

It is equally gratifying to welcome students who initiate their legacy when they walk in through the front doors and out through the windows on graduation day—for the true legacy of Mount de Sales Academy is what is inscribed on students’ hearts and carried with them through life. relations with a minor in sport and entertainment management. She was actively involved in the Newman Club of Catholic students, the out-of-state student mentor program, and the Capstone Scholars Program. After graduating from the University of South Carolina in 2011 with a B.A. in Journalism, Emily worked as the Communications and Marketing Coordinator for National Association Management Group, LLC near Atlanta, GA. She served as an associate editor of publications, a

press contact, and staffer for events on Capitol Hill and in Las Vegas for client franchisee associations. Emily enjoys spending time with family, especially her new baby niece Lena, daughter of Danielle Ko Gaspar ‘03, and friends. Her love for reading includes classic literature, biographies, and books about religion/saints. She is an avid sports fan who roots for the Orioles, Ravens, and the South Carolina Gamecocks. About her new role, Emily states, “Returning to Mount

de Sales is a wonderful blessing and I am so thrilled to be here. I’m now able to fully use my degree while living closer to my family. Better still, I am working at a place which has given me a solid education, amazing friends, a supportive community, and a deeper Catholic faith.” Her goal in this new position is to connect with alumnae, especially those with whom we have lost contact, and to reaffirm their connection to Mount de Sales Academy. She encourages all alumnae to call, email, or meet her in person, saying, “Let’s share our love of MDSA; remain active in your school!” Please contact Emily to share alumnae news, get involved, or otherwise reconnect to your alma mater. on the field and then tearing up the dance floor with your friends at a St. Joe mixer. It was tough, fun, and full of the most unbelievably inspiring women (and men like Mr. Evans, God rest his soul).

I

have worked at a publishing house in SoHo, Manhattan. I have surfed in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, the Canary Islands and Ireland. I have hiked beautiful jungle waterfalls in the Dominican Republic, snorkeled reefs in Belize, Irish step danced in Dublin, stand up paddled in Jamaica, camped in Mexico, and snowboarded in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I have watched the Baltimore Ravens win not one, but TWO Super Bowls. Of all of those unbelievable life experiences, not one has taught me more valuable life lessons and developed my character and sense of self more than my time at Mount de Sales. Besides being beyond blessed with an awesome family, I am convinced that spending such critically impactful years at Mount de Sales is the primary factor responsible for influencing the life I have built for myself. Mount de Sales was a whirlwind full of weekdays studying, praying, hustling, working, laughing, learning and loving every stair from the basement locker room to the third floor choir loft illegal cutthrough.Weekends were full of competing

Mount de Sales was a safe, dynamic, fun, challenging place where a bunch of small-town Baltimore girls were encouraged to engage in discussions, express opinions, think critically and communicate clearly. We could be playing guitar singing our hearts out at Mass one day, and be leading a school assembly discussing political, religious, professional or moral issues the next. It never even occurred to me until I got into the “real world” how unique it was to be a fully fearless female leader, a.k.a... a Mount de Sales girl. I am currently running my second awardwinning company, SoCal Socialite, and I directly attribute my professional success and entrepreneurial courage to Mount de Sales teaching me to value my intellect and ability over looks, always challenging me to question the status quo, ask the tough questions, and relentlessly chase my dreams. Whether it was my six-months-pregnant lacrosse coaches, Mary Hart Gagnon and Katie Hart Mangione, dusting us on sprints during practice, or Sr. Helen Marie, O.P. commanding an audience of hundreds with her passionate, genuine advice on everything from the Bible to

boys. The caliber of mentors we were so fortunate to have set a powerful example of how women can be both competitive AND compassionate. I am beyond thrilled for Phase II of the Capital Campaign providing a proper turf field for the Sailors to continue to nurture and surpass our local tradition of athletic excellence. I’ll never forget how jealous we were of Bryn Mawr and Roland Park’s stadiums; it made such a difference in their school spirit and athletic mindset. Playing lacrosse with the Sailors as well as in college, impacted me to the point that one of my requirements for hiring a new employee is that she has to have been a college or high school athlete. It’s a reliable filter because you know this employee can work well with other women to win and understands how to give 100% effort mentally and physically in the face of even the toughest challenges. My advice to Mount de Sales girls is to become very clear on what you want. That is actually the hardest part. Once you make that decision, things will begin falling into place faster than you can imagine. Positive thoughts create positive things, and if you listen to that intuitive inner voice, give more than you expect to get, and maintain an attitude of kindness and spiritual gratitude, you can create ANYTHING. Live the life you love and love the life you live. Look for the opportunities around you, trust yourself... and then decide to go bigger.

SoCal Socialite’s clients include Disney/ABC Digital, The Academy Awards, Auction.com, Wedding.com, BookRenter.com, Sanctuary Belize, Beach Bunny Swimwear, TUNE Footwear, Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort, Mareas Resort in Costa Rica and others. Erin is also on the Board of Directors for the Mobile Excellence Awards in Los Angeles, and is actively involved in several local nonprofits in the Orange County area focused on empowering women.

Annual Report of Donors

The Annual Giving Campaign - United We Accomplish Great Things As you read through this Annual Report of Donors, do you find yourself asking questions? What is Annual Giving? How does my gift help the school? Why does Mount de Sales Academy need my help every year?

Sacred Heart Program Center

Perhaps Capital Campaign gifts are easier to understand as they are for projects that are typically large and capital in nature. Capital Campaigns are opportunities for donors to stretch their giving to larger levels, which is sometimes accomplished by pledging over time. In contrast to Capital Campaign giving, Annual Giving support is typically smaller, one-time gifts requested every year. At Mount de Sales Academy, these gifts are critical to our ability to provide for the needs of our students and maintain our campus. This is because we are committed to providing affordable Catholic education. In comparison to our peer schools, Mount de Sales Academy test scores rank in the top percentages while our tuition is among the lowest. Even still, tuition is a sacrifice. The goal at Mount de Sales Academy is to make it a feasible sacrifice for families. Therefore, support of the Annual Giving campaign offsets the difference between tuition and the actual cost to educate a Mount de Sales girl. Support of the Annual Giving Campaign provides for projects, improvements, and maintenance that otherwise would not be possible. The Annual Giving Campaign 2011-2012 impacted our current students in the ways listed on the right. Annual Giving support is needed each year in order to constantly improve our student offerings while maintaining our historic 1852 building and campus. Annual Giving is a team effort. Coupled together – support from alumnae, current students through the Your Participation Matters campaign, current parents, past parents, grandparents, and others – annual gifts make a tremendous difference in the lives of our students. In many ways, Annual Giving is symbolic of what Mount de Sales Academy is all about: united we accomplish great things. Regardless of the type of gift you make, we are extremely grateful to be the beneficiary of your generosity. You are a part of what establishes Mount de Sales Academy as a leader in Catholic education for girls, offering a lifechanging experience for our students. Therefore, if you have made any type of gift, our response is the same: “Thank you!”

Living Legacy Through

Appreciated Stock: A Win-Win-WIn For Mount de Sales Academy

& You

L

egacy Giving, Planned Gifts, Estate Planning are all terms for the same thing – creative methods for supporting Mount

de Sales Academy in a way that doesn’t come from your checkbook (and is often larger than you may have otherwise been able to do). Donating appreciated securities – stocks or mutual funds – is gaining momentum with increases in the stock market. This

The Geier legacy represented by Nick and Jane Geier ‘48, P’74 ’77, GP’08 ’12 ’13 with Pam and Joe Geier P’08 ’12, Trustee

is an especially popular method of gift giving for donors in the 15% or higher tax bracket who claim itemized deductions.

Here's a scenario: You purchased $10,000 worth of stock more than one year ago and it is now valued at $20,000. If you sold the $20,000 in stock instead of donating it, you would pay capital gains tax on the $10,000 gain in value. The tax rate for long-term capital gains is 15%. Therefore, the tax savings for donating rather than selling the stock would be $1,500 ($10,000 x 15%). In addition, you can claim a deduction of the market value of the donated shares – the full $20,000 – as a charitable deduction. If you are in the 25% federal tax bracket, this could generate another $5,000 ($20,000 x 25%) in tax savings. Total tax savings adds up to $6,500 (or more if you are in a higher tax bracket)!

donation:

Mount de Sales Academy receives a $20,000 gift that cost you only $10,000 and resulted in $6,500 in tax benefits for you. Talk to your tax professional to see how you might be able to make a significant gift of appreciated stocks (this doesn’t work if the stock has lost value). Mount de Sales Academy receives a gift, you avoid capital gains tax, AND you are receiving a charitable tax deduction. It’s a triple play! Annual Report of Donors: Your Participation Matters

Your Participation Matters Now & Always Regardless of competitive class spirit, students rally to support Mount de Sales Academy through the Your Participation Matters campaign. One time each year, students are asked to make a financial contribution that tangibly assists their school. In addition to providing funds that make a big difference for their benefit when combined with other donations to the Annual Giving Campaign, the students are educated about the importance of giving back monetarily. Your Participation Matters is an education in philanthropy. The importance of giving selflessly and generously is reinforced by the example set by Mr. and Mrs. Francis Smyth. Francis, former Mount de Sales Academy trustee, and Autee, his wife, have matched the Your Participation Matters donations dollar for dollar (and a little extra) for the past several years. This is a tremendous incentive to our students and brought the campaign total to $9,871.76! Every day the students pray for the “friends and benefactors of Mount de Sales Academy.” As contributors through Your Participation Matters, they are included in this prayer—as are all of you, who made gifts and are recognized in this Annual Report of Donors.

hen Sailor alumnae athletes return, likely they will not remember wins and losses but the lasting bonds of friendship and life lessons formed on the field, court, or track. When all alumnae visit their alma mater, the major changes on campus serve as reminders of the many people who generously and selflessly supported the Anchored in Excellence Charting our Future Capital Campaign for Mount de Sales Academy. With the completed $5.5 million Phase I of the Capital Campaign that provided for the convent, HVAC, and campus security enhancements, we are now hoping to bring closure to Phase II of the Capital Campaign. The $1.7 million Phase II for the artificial turf field presents everyone with the opportunity to leave a tangible, lasting legacy at Mount de Sales Academy through acknowledgement in the form of donor or honorary recognition. Donors who contribute $1,000 or more will have their names, or other requested recognition, appear on a memorial to Phase II donors that will be erected on the plaza area overlooking the field. This opportunity has excited many in our community. Teams have rallied to recognize coaches past and present. So far, seats have been procured for Mr. Bill Held, past lacrosse and basketball coach and creator of the original field, Mr. Steve Weber, coach for cross country, indoor track, and track and field, Mrs. Mary Gentner, field hockey coach, and the Mount de Sales Academy Alumnae Association. A campaign is currently underway to name a seat for Mr. Pete Waskiewicz, softball coach. To date, 90 seats have been allocated for acknowledgement and more are available. In addition to naming a seat, there are other donor recognition levels.

Brian MacLean, P’14 and member of the Board of Trustees, elaborated on this when making his family’s gift to Phase II. Mr. MacLean said, “When [my wife] Maureen and I decided to make a contribution to Mount de Sales, we wanted to help the school as a whole. Since [our daughter] Sarah is a tennis player, she will not play on the new field. However, our belief is that giving is not about personal gain. It’s about how our contribution, used wisely, will most benefit the school. We feel that Phase II is a project that benefits everyone.” In order to move on to Phase III, the performing arts center, Phase II needs to be brought to completion. In order to meet our Phase II and bring home the win for our Mount de Sales Sailors, $550,000 still needs to be raised. To make a gift, visit mountdesales.org and click on Online Donations or contact Sister Philip Joseph, O.P. at 443.636.2060.

Parents Club of Mount de Sales Academy

We are grateful to the Parents’ Club and the 1852 Crew, an offshoot of the Parents’ Club, where current and past parents do hands-on improvements and maintenance of the 1852 Building. Through their countless efforts and contributions, the Parents’ Club is interwoven into the fabric, or possibly more accurately the bricks and mortar, of Mount de Sales Academy. Parents, thank you!

Goals of the Parents' Club: The Mount de Sales Academy Parents’ Club is open to all current and past parents. The Parents’ Club has two main goals:

Maria Louzon '09

Current Residence: Marriottsville, Maryland

• For parents, administration, faculty and students to work together for the benefit of Mount de Sales Academy; and • To support Mount de Sales in its endeavors to provide the students with higher levels of education and spiritual growth.

Facebook page: MDS Class of 2009

In an effort to achieve these goals, the Parents’ Club aims to:

2009 Class Agent

Occupation: Charm City Run, sales associate; Bean Hollow, barista

“No matter who I was or was not friends with during my time at Mount de Sales, I know that I will always have each and every girl there for me. We all had our ups and downs as sisters, but I cherish every memory we shared and am so happy that we have that unbreakable bond.”

• Join together as a team in order to induce fundraising to help Mount de Sales financially. • Provide an atmosphere of kindness and concern and a sense of belonging. • Provide functions that bring the school community together to share time - socially and spiritually. You are invited to sign up today for the Parents' Club Annual Golf Tournament! The tournament is scheduled for May 8. Visit the MDSA website and click on "Parents' Club" for more information. 27

Class Agents:

Are you interested in serving MDSA?

I

n 2012 the Office of Alumnae Relations began inviting alumnae to volunteer as Class Agents, liaisons between their classes and Mount de Sales Academy. Working as individuals or in pairs, Class Agents relay school news and event details to their classmates while also sharing alumnae announcements and revised contact information with Mount de Sales Academy. Because each class is unique, Class Agents have the freedom to choose how to best communicate with their class. Through maintaining contact with classmates and the director of alumnae relations, Class Agents are part of the joint effort to build a cooperative and active Mount de Sales Academy alumnae network. Katrina Zelenka MacWhorter ’00 is one of our valued Class Agents. Below, she offers her reasons for serving in this capacity and how she balances her busy schedule:

What made you decide to be your class agent? I decided to be the class agent for the class of 2000 because I wanted to give a little something back to Mount de Sales.

What do you enjoy about serving as a Class Agent and why? I enjoy staying in touch with fellow classmates. There have been so many exciting life events happening for everyone in our class from graduations, promotions, engagements, marriages, babies and more! I love seeing all the pictures and getting all the updates from our class.

Do you think it's a manageable role, even with family and other responsibilities? How would you describe the time commitment of being a class agent? The class agent role is manageable, even with a busy family life. I work full time and have a very active little 18-month-old son. I knew for me the easiest way to take on this role was to create a Facebook page specifically for the class of 2000. The Facebook page is an easy way to communicate with almost all of my classmates. I got a lot of feedback from fellow classmates who thought the Facebook page was a good idea for keeping in touch and keeping up to date on upcoming events at Mount de Sales. In regards to time commitment, once you get everything up and going, it is easy to maintain.

Why should other alumnae agents?

become class

If you are interested in keeping in touch with classmates and want to still be involved with Mount de Sales, being the class agent is an easy way to give back!

Katrina has tailored her Class Agent role to fit the needs of her class—all while living in Virginia with her husband, Keith, and son, Brooks. She is proof to all alumnae that geographical distance and an active life should not hinder you from serving as an ambassador for your alma mater! If you want to volunteer as a Class Agent or learn more about what it entails, I would be happy to speak with you. Reach me by phone, email or Facebook. If you live in the Maryland area, let’s set up a time to meet. I look forward to working with you!

Katrina Zelenka MacWhorter ’00 smiles with her son, Brooks.
