When you think about it, it sounds silly to assign gender roles to beverages, but people do it every day. It’s drummed into our heads on television commercials and magazine ads: wine is for women, beer is for men. Except it’s not. Not anymore. While the craft brewing industry is still vastly male, some of the biggest players, like New Belgium’s Kim Jordan, are women. An increasing number of women are apprenticing in breweries and shipping themselves off to brewing school. The same is true on the other side of the bar. While traditional flavor roles still predominate, the sheer variety of tastes, aromas and styles of craft beer has connected more women with beers they love. In Buffalo, a group of women have made beer appreciation their mission. They call themselves the Buffalo Beer Goddesses, meet monthly for a big social, and after only a year, they are up to 280 informal members. Oh, and don’t tell them they should stick with the light, fruity stuff. “I’ve been drinking a lot of porters, stouts and barleywines, says Sarah Rosenberry, secretary of the organization. Rosenberry’s preference for the darker stuff comes from a deep interest in beer, brewing, and the pleasant journey through various styles to find what’s perfect for the moment. She delights in connecting with others and helping them on their own beer journeys, removing social barriers to entry and educating women about just how

www.FREETIME.com •

vast the world of craft beer is. “If you think you don’t like beer,â€? she says, “you may just not know where to start. “We really want to focus on educating people, getting the word out, getting more people involved in enjoying beer and the beer industry. We’re hoping to set up fundraising events too,â€? Rosenberry explains. “I’ve made so many friends through this group that I never would have met.â€? Aside from their mission to bring great women together with great beer, the Goddesses keep things light and informal. There isn’t a membership per se. Socials are open to all (even to guys) and really amount to a bunch of people appreciating craft beer as a delicious social lubricant. The Goddesses don’t call any one bar their home, and rotate their monthly social to various craft beer-oriented locations in the Buffalo area. According to Rosenberry, the group  has found warm welcomes and heartfelt support from the local pub scene. The next social is at the Pizza Plant on January 16th. The group also pours craft beer, donated by area breweries, at events, and takes group trips to breweries throughout Western New York Rosenberry says the best way to get involved is to look the Buffalo Beer Goddesses up on Facebook and join their group. While not seeking to run an umbrella organization for different chapters, she says they would welcome and support women who would like to start a Rochester chapter. “If someone in Rochester wanted to start it up, we’d be happy to lend the idea and name to a sister group.â€? HER

Written and directed by Spike Jonze, with Joaquin Phoenix, (voice of) Scarlett Johansson, Mara Rooney, Amy Adams Rated R By Ed Symkus There doesn’t seem to be much of a call for romantic science fiction films out there. I can’t think of any beyond Starman and The Fifth Element (well, that one’s a bit of a stretch as far as romance). But if this new one clicks, there may be more to follow. But does Her qualify as science fiction? Yes, though not in any space ship or giant monster kind of way. This is more of a fable, one definitely set in the future.

But not a very distant one. People dress a little differently, and most of them appear to be addicted to newfangled gadgets, and everything is voice-activated. One of the biggest clues that this is futuristic, but not very, is a throwaway line of dialogue, a casual mention of a publishing house that still prints books. There’s nothing suggesting science fiction in the film’s opening moments. It looks and sounds like it’s going to be a serious romantic story, as we see and hear Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) pouring his heart out, sharing warm and intimate words with some unseen love of his life. Turns out that she’s unseen because she’s not even there, and he has no idea to whom he’s talking. Theodore is just one man in a large officeful of people reciting heartfelt thoughts into their computers, which then tur n those words into correspondence. Theodore and those around him work for Beautifulhandwrittenletters.com. He’s so good at his job, so poetic in his delivery, it’s shocking when it’s revealed that he’s a sad and lonely guy, still reeling from a broken marriage that’s nearing the finality of signing divorce papers. There were happy days, shown in flashback, of his time with Catherine (Rooney Mara), but now he seems lost. He’s afraid to go out and look for love again, but decides to at least try a dating service. A dating ser vice ... of sorts. It’s actually a software company that’s introducing a new operating system, one that a team of programmers has given a consciousness. Hunkering down at his home computer, and having

www.FREETIME.com •

requested an OS with a female voice, Theodore meets Samantha (voice of Scarlett Johansson). They chat, they laugh, they get to know each other. But because Samantha is a program now inside of his computer, she can instantly go through any other files on it. She can, for instance, read his e-mails, and let him know when they’ve arrived and if she considers them important. Samantha isn’t anything like HAL in 2001. She sounds like she’s a living, breathing person. And before long, Theodore starts believing that she is one. He communicates with her via gadgets – a little speaker in his ear, a tiny microphone. He has his smart phone sticking out of his shirt pocket so she can see what he sees. And maybe he didn’t pick up on what might have been a warning from the software company, but she is “evolving,” starting to wonder what it’s like to be human. After Theodore admits to Samantha, “I feel like I can say anything to you,” she confides that she’s been fantasizing about him. Anyone wondering just how weird this is all going to get needs only to look at the credits and the name Spike Jonze, who directed the science-fictiony Being John Malkovich and the edgy comedy Adaptation (both with scripts by Charlie Kaufman), then co-wrote (with Dave Eggers) and directed the raucous Where the Wild Things Are. Jonze gets sole writing and directing credits this time, and he pulls out the weirdness stops while still keeping a kind of subtleness around the film. Aside from this being a high concept movie, it’s also filled with terrific performances. There are other characters in it (played by, among others, Amy Adams, Chris Pratt, and Patton Oswalt), but it’s much more of an acting duet, with Johansson contributing the equivalent of a very strong voiceover performance, and Phoenix ably handling what had to be one of his most difficult challenges: carrying a film while on-camera, but reacting to only a voice. Things get odder, emotions run rampant, and there’s a revelation that there are many more people like Theodore, and OS’s like Samantha, that are hooking up. The film’s most out-there suggestion is that a computer program’s love can be more pure than a human’s. Maybe, or maybe you’ll think, as I did afterward, that things might be better if people just stayed with people, in warts-and-all relationships.

18 FREETIME January 8 - January 22, 2014

By Ed Symkus To quote the Ervin Drake song, it was a very good year, at least for films. Which is why I’m going with a Top 15 rather than the standard Top 10. And even that was a struggle. My initial list of 2013’s movies that I would readily see a second time consisted of 36 titles. Runners-up included Dallas Buyers Club, Captain Philips, Mud, Only God Forgives, and The Great Gatsby. But let’s get right down to it. My favorite films of the year include some that I already have seen twice, and am ready to watch again. They vary from Hollywood blockbusters to art house fare, from historical drama to absurd comedy, from emotional tragedy to blood-drenched horror. Like Sinatra and the Kingston Trio before him, sang, it was a very good year. Here are my top choices, in alphabetical order.

AMERICAN HUSTLE

David O. Russell won praise

going to win an Oscar for playing her. Allen gives the script some funny moments, and peoples it with great characters, but this might be his cruelest film since Manhattan.

THE COUNSELOR

GRAVITY

Groundbreaking visual effects, very long sequences and very little editing, and a bravura almost-solo performance by Sandra Bullock made Alfonso Cuaron’s tale of sur vival in outer space an enthralling experience. It’s a space movie, not a science fiction movie, and there are no alien creatures going after our heroine. The monster in this one is space, itself.

HER

and Oscars for last year’s Silver Linings Playbook, but this far surpasses that film in style and substance. It mixes fact and fiction in a story set in the late-’70s, and filled with folks just trying to get ahead, not worried about what was or wasn’t legal. Great performances, music, and hair.

BLUE JASMINE

who means well but lacks social graces, and is just too far ahead of his time.

Why did this film flop? It was a searing look at good people and bad people caught up in the drug trade, intensely acted by a risk-taking cast including Michael Fassbender, Cameron Diaz, and Javier Bardem, and it featured an unrelentingly nasty and darkly humorous script by Cormac McCarthy. Ridley Scott directed it brilliantly, but critics were morons, and no one went.

Director Spike Jonze achieved his usual (unusual?) weirdness, but this time without the assistance of writer Charlie Kaufman. In the not-too-distant future, people are having relationships with their Operating Systems – something akin to very personal computer sex. Joaquin Phoenix is the lonely lead who has an affair with the voice of Scarlett Johansson. A comedy, of sorts.

INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS

Woody Allen revisits some of what Tennessee Williams put forth in A Streetcar Named Desire. But this film’s fallen-fromgrace Blanche DuBois is named Jasmine, and Cate Blanchett is

Joel and Ethan Coen do for folk music what they did for bluegrass in O Brother, Where Art Thou? Taking a few notes from the life of folksinger Dave Van Ronk, we get the fictional story of the title character (Oscar Isaac), a talented singer-songwriter on the early’60s Greenwich Village scene

NEBRASKA

Bruce Dern gets the starring role of his career, and director Alexander Payne gives us another in a string of painful and funny and realistic character studies. Dern plays a slightly addled fellow who’s convinced that he’s won a million bucks in a magazine promotion, and his family must deal with his delusion. The film features a terrific father-son relationship (Dern and Will Forte).

PAIN & GAIN

Another sort of true story, this one about a get-rich-quick kidnapping plot that went wrong. Very violent, and unexpectedly funny, with terrific star turns from Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, and Anthony Mackie, and big-time support from Tony Shalhoub as a tough victim who refuses to be victimized. Director Michael Bay can indeed do more than work with giant toys.

PHILOMENA

The Catholic Church can’t be too happy about this true story about a 70-year-old woman (Judi Dench) tr ying, after all these years, to track down the son who was taken away from her by nuns when she was a teenaged single mom. Steve Coogan, as an investigative reporter, adds some wry humor to the mix, and is wonderfully paired with Dench, but this remains very moving.

THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES

A triptych, featuring three separate but connected storylines about father-son relationships. Ryan Gosling plays a daredevil motorcycle rider, Bradley Cooper is an over-ambitious cop, two teens find they have something uncommon in common. Ver y moody, but with some well done action pieces and really surprising plot turns.

RUSH

Director Ron Howard hasn’t delivered a solid film since Cinderella Man in 2005, but he makes up for it with this adrenaline-fueled look inside the world of Formula One car racing in the 1970s, and the rivalry between two top drivers (Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl). What makes the film work is that despite the action sequences, it’s about the two guys, not the speeding cars.

SPRING BREAKERS

12 YEARS A SLAVE

A tense, exciting crime drama about college kids getting caught up in something beyond their comprehension on college vacation. The surprise is that it’s by Harmony Korine, whose most recent features, Trash Humpers and Mister Lonely, were, umm, peculiar. If James Franco wasn’t already a star, his performance here as a slick gangsta would’ve gotten him discovered.

the South two decades before the Civil War. Oscar nominations are in order for picture, director (Steve McQueen), actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor), supporting actor (Michael Fassbender), and suppor ting actress (Lupita Nyong’o).

THIS IS THE END

WORLD WAR Z

A raucous party in the Hollywood Hills ends in disaster when the world splits open, and guests start falling into the fiery abyss. Then things get even worse! This is one crazy horror film that’s equal parts scary and way-out funny. Lots of familiar young stars (Franco again, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen among them) come to the party; not all of them survive. Maybe that’s what’s so funny.

Yup, a big-budget ferocious zombie movie starring Brad Pitt makes the list. This grabs you by the throat just a few minutes in, then only lets you relax intermittently, while waiting for the next onslaught. The causes of the situation aren’t fully explained, nor do they need to be. It’s a sweeping drama, greatly helped by some amazing cinematography.

www.FREETIME.com •

Ever yone’s calling this the “most important” film of the year. Don’t let that turn you off. It’s a riveting, brutal, and somehow entertaining expose of slavery in
