beer CRAFT

New Beers Here From East and West By Mark Tichenor It’s gratifying to see how many great breweries take our tiny slice of Western New York seriously enough to distribute and market their products in Rochester. It says a lot about us as beer lovers, as people who appreciate craftsmanship and as developers of a vibrant culinary culture. We may not be one of the biggest markets but, darn it, we matter. Last week, two new entrants coupled up to area taplines: Captain Lawrence Brewing from the Hudson Valley and Ballast Point Brewing from San Diego. Both breweries are firmly established and highly regarded, and each brings something special to the region. Nestled just outside the business district of Elmsford, New York, Captain Lawrence has grown right along with the craft beer revolution. The brewer y recently opened a new production facility, which enables them to expand their reach. Last week, Captain Lawrence celebrated their arrival in Rochester with a special happy hour at The Tap and Table, the first area establishment to carry their beer. Of the four on draft at the time of the tasting, two stood out as great beers. Captain’s Kölsch is a refreshing take on a style that often seems to

January 23 - February 6, 2013 FREETIME trip brewers up. Kölsch is an Ale brought up to think it’s a lager, simultaneously clean yet snappy. It takes longer to ferment and there’s some skill i n vo l ve d in avoiding extra f lavors thrown by the yeast. This one hits the nail pretty much right on the head. It’s slightly sweet, a little lemony, and manages to exhibit character despite its crisp teutonic palate. It really wouldn’t be out of place in the little bars of Cologne. The f irst thing you notice

that tempts me to recommend it as a summer lawnmower beer, except for the fact that it’s north of 6% alcohol and drinking these while cut ting the grass would result in some interesting yard patterns. Ballast Point Brewing has some tough competition right out of the gate. They share their home market of San Diego with Green Flash Brewing and the Almighty Stone Brewing Co. (which paradoxically won Beer Advocate’s ‘Best Brewery of All Time’ title in two different years). Beginning last Wednesday, that competition continued in Rochester for the first time at The Old Toad.

when you lift a glass of Captain Lawrence Liquid Gold is an aroma that reaches up and punches you in the nostrils. Belgian-style golden ales are sought after precisely for this sort of presence and character, which also comes through in the beer’s funky sweet and spicy flavor. The Liquid Gold never verges on syrupy though, with a pleasant liquid quench quality

It’s increasingly hard to stand out as an IPA. Great examples and okay examples exist within percentage points of each other, and, barring flaws, it’s hard to even put one’s finger on what might make one more delicious. Ballast Point’s Sculpin IPA, however, does distinguish itself. The aroma promises honey, grass and freshly turned earth, and the beer delivers these

f lavors, and a sneaky, alluring funk, with impressive subtlety. The other prominent aromatic note makes one wonder if Sculpin IPA was just legalized in Colorado and Washington. Ballast Point’s standout beer is absolutely the Victory at Sea Coffee Vanilla Porter, and there is nothing really subtle about it. It’s big and chewy, smells like breakfast, and unapologetically melds three flavors proven to work well together: coffee, vanilla and chocolate. That’s not to say Victory at Sea isn’t sophisticated. You taste each flavor in turn, and the chocolate notes are more cocoa than milk chocolate, forgoing candy sweetness for a more complex elegance. It’s the difference between birthday cake and Viennese pastry, and a tantalizing dessert unto itself. Both Captain Lawrence and Ballast Point are here for the long haul, with local distribution, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find them in beer stores and on tap around the county within a couple of weeks. The arrival of these two breweries into a relatively crowded market demonstrates that there’s always room for a couple more places at the beer table, and reinforces how lucky we are to be beer lovers in this day and age. Mark owns a laptop and likes beer. For more on beer, check out the beercraft blog, updated regularly, at beercraft. wordpress.com. Find him on Twitter @beercraft. By Ed Symkus At first sight, it appears that Rust and Bone, the newest off beat drama from French filmmaker Jacques Audiard (The Prophet, The Beat That My Heart Skipped) is going to be about Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts), a fellow who has left home in Belgium, hit the road with his thumb out, his young son in tow, and is looking for a new life.

That new life turns out to be in France where, unannounced, he uncomfortably drops in on and then moves in with the sister he hasn’t even spoken to in years. But when Ali lands a job as a bouncer at a club, and helps out slinky and mysterious Stephanie (Marion Cotillard), who’s been bloodied up in a fight, it looks like it’ll be about Stephanie, instead of him. We go back and forth for a bit, looking at Ali’s possibly shady, probably directionless life, wondering what happened back at home to make him leave with his son, and checking in with Stephanie at her day job, where she trains Orcas at a Seaworld-like place. OK, so maybe the film is going to be about the two of them. But no, they lose contact with each other. It takes a horrific accident at work, in which, very early on in the film, she loses both of her legs, to bring Ali and Stephanie

GENESEO THEATRES Lakeville Rd., Geneseo; 243-2691 together again, making it an atypical story of opposites attracting, and a study of two people going through very big, totally unexpected changes. Ali is a good father, but he’s also so footloose and carefree, some would refer to him as a cad. Stephanie lives with another man, but we don’t know if he’s her lover or her pimp. We wonder about exactly what she was doing at that club that got her into a fight. But none of that matters. We just want to know how things will work out between them. Yet the script keeps presenting them on their own. He keeps changing jobs (a convoluted side plot has him getting involved in some definitely shady dealings), spars in a gym after hours (which leads to another side plot about illegal street fighting), and picks up women whenever he can. She wakes up in a hospital, realizes what has happened to her, and gets lost in a spiral of misery. Two opposites: He’s incredibly

positive, she’s become completely negative. Fortunately, this is the kind of story where his outlook on life is contagious. “I won’t go out! I don’t want anyone to see me!” she screams at him when he visits her. But he gets her to. In fact, he treats her as if there’s nothing wrong. And she has no idea how to react. She’s practically speechless when he suggests they go to the beach for a swim. But they do, and it’s a wonderful scene, hinting of a rosy future for her, despite her physical setback. Her legless scenes, by the way, are on par with those flawless ones done with Gary Sinise in Forrest Gump. This being a French film, things turn sexual, and the sexuality becomes casual, then dips into the erotic. Though the mood of the film lightens considerably (she gets prosthetic legs), their understanding of each other never becomes clear to either of them, or to us. But rather than exploring that further, and turning it into a more meaningful love story, the script tacks on an additional accident, nowhere as severe as the bookended one at the beginning, involving a third character, to bring everything full circle. It’s too bad that instead, it leaves things unresolved.
