Andre Thierry & Zydeco Magic

Turtle Hill Folk Fest

Rotary Sunshine Campus, Rush | Sept. 6-8 The Golden Link’s 42nd anniversary Turtle Hill Folk Festival this year will feature three days of music by... •On 9/6 – The Honey Dewdrops from Virginia, a duo featuring Laura Wortman and Kagey Parris, play a blend of Americana and traditional folk...The Stray Birds, from PA, who draw upon American folk music traditions and are talented multi-instrumentalists that use three-part harmonies to compliment their sound...and John Gorka, a rich, expressive baritone who performs contemporary American folk and who took first place at the Kerrville Folk Festival. •On 9/7 - Pesky J. Nixon, young men who draw influences from urban balladeers, bluegrass, and the New England folk scene... Bruce Molsky, the premier oldtime fiddler who defines the timeless folk tradition of Appalachia... and Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, a married couple who have been performing together for over 20 years, touring in support of a new album, Home By Dark. •On 9/8 – The Closing Concert at 2 p.m. features all performers.

Sticky Lips BBQ Juke Joint | Sept. 5 In recent years, Andre Thierry & Zydeco Magic has been capturing the attention of music lovers and dancers worldwide for some time now. When Andre released his first CD, It’s About Time in 1999, he raised the bar for ZydecoCajun musicians nationwide. He has gone on to release Whole Lot of Something (2004), Christmas With Andre Thierry (2006), and Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic LIVE! At the Woodshop (2008). Raised in the Creole area of San Francisco, Andre was immersed in the same community music and dance tradition as his family in Louisiana. He has been described as the Jimmy Hendrix of Zydeco and as a musical genius. The songwriter and accordion player brings an intensity and creativity that is barely matched by another zydeco performer in the country. He currently tours in support of a new one, Are You Ready To Learn.

Gilbert Gottfried

Comedy Club | Sept. 5-7 Comedy writer Betsy Borns once asked Gilbert Gottfried what goes through his mind when he’s on stage. Gilbert’s quick reply was. “Ever ything. The Holocaust... my laundry... whether waxed or unwaxed dental floss is better... whether the mint flavor on toothpicks is poisonous... how many bristles are in a hairbrush.” You might think he’s joking - though he’s probably not. Perhaps best well known for his ‘unusual’ voice, Gilbert has done it all. Carson, Letterman, Leno, hosting his own weekend show on USA network, movies with the likes of Eddie Murphy and John Travolta, voiceovers for Disney’s Aladdin and the math-based show, Cyberchase...and of course, the Aflac Duck!

Known for hi edgy humor and...that voice, (Iago in Disney’s Aladdin and the original Aflac Duck) actor and comedian Gilbert Gottfried makes an appearance at The Comedy Club, September 5-7.

Chris Simpson & Matt Bridgestone

Joke Factory | Sept. 6 & 7 Chris Simpson began doing standup in ’93; taking several years off-stage before retuning in 2003. Chris has performed with George Lopez, and Chris Tucker and has hosted several comedy

•••••••••••••••••••••

television shows. His routine uses an in your face, karate style humor - with a tease and stereotype for everyone!...Comedian Matt Bridgestone makes you feel like an old friend as he weaves his way through a crowd, making the audience part of the show. He’s been on the Howard Stern and Opie and Anthony show; and is the front man for the New Jersey “NoMad Comedians” Tour.

Vanessa Bayer & Jay Pharoah

Strong Auditorium, U of R | Sept. 7 Comedian Vanessa Bayer is, of course, best known as a member of the Saturday Night Live cast. Her early career included working on the show Jewsical: The Musical and at Chicago’s ImprovOlympic, the Annoyance Theater and Second City...Actor, comedian, impersonator Jay Pharoah has risen to instant fame on Saturday Night Live with his impressions of Barack Obama, Jay-Z, Eddie Murphy and Denzel Washinton. He’s also appeared in the film Lola Versus.

beer CRAFT

Roll Out The Barrel, of Oktoberfest Beer By Mark Tichenor Oktoberfest season is here again! Time for the biggest, baddest, and best party in the world, at least, if you’re in Munich. Sure, plenty of local Oktoberfests spring up, but it’s just not the same. Ah well, at least we all get to enjoy Oktoberfest beer. It’s through a confluence of a few key events that this delicious brew came to be. The stated impetus for Oktoberfest seems kind of frivolous: just another Royal wedding amid a bloated aristocracy of kings, countesses, archdukes and the like. But the festival thrown to commemorate the matrimony of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese Von SaxeHildburghausen would go on to become the largest annual festival in the world, even bigger than Burning Man. The brewers of Munich really needed those drinkers to come out in force, since Mother Nature had them locked into an ironclad brewing cycle. Even the best brewmasters of the time had a pretty hazy understanding of microbiology, but what they did know was that beer brewed and fermented during the winter months, and lagered in colder temperatures, tasted a heck of a lot better than the sour nasty summer-brewed beers. Lager yeast needs cold temperatures to do its job, and impart that classic clean lager finish. The brewers would release this early spring-brewed beer (called ‘Märzen because it was often produced in March) over the next few months, but it definitely benefitted from a little aging, growing more mellow and delicious and peaking right around the middle of September. Naturally, the September release became something drinkers really looked forward to. But storing all that beer put a strain on the Munich breweries’ cooperage resources–they needed those dang barrels back for the next batch–so a giant beer celebration seemed the perfect way to empty a lot of kegs all at once. Pretty much any reason would probably have sufficed.

www.FREETIME.com •

So, although it’s a raucous party, Oktoberfest was really a practical move by a stereotypically practical people (who, incidentally can hang with anyone in the world when it comes to enjoying a ludicrously oversized vessel of beer). And this remains true today, both at the actual Oktoberfest and the thousands of smaller festivals that take place all over the world. For the classic experience, you really should go with Oktoberfest beer from the big six Munich breweries: Spaten, Hacker-Pschorr, Augustiner, Hof bräu, Paulaner and Löwenbräu. This is one of those things where tradition and experience matter, and while the beer halls of Munich doubtlessly rage with impassioned argument over which one is the best, they’re all masterful brews, lightly sweet from the malt with a barely perceptible cut of Hallertau and Tettnang hops cleaning things up. That’s not to say American brewers don’t make tasty Oktoberfest-style beers, they most certainly do, but many are prone to that same craft brewer’s mindset of making everything hoppier, or sweeter, or more badass, and that’s not necessarily appropriate for a beer meant to be consumed all night, and intended as much to be swayed and sloshed in the air as to be poured into the gullet. Victory Festbier is a good bet for an American alternative, as is The Boston Beer Company’s Sam Adams Oktoberfest. Even if you can’t get to Munich, do yourself a favor and head out to your nearest Oktoberfest. Even in a small city halfway around the world, there’s something about sitting at those long tables under the big tent, making friends with your neighbors, listening to the oompah band and hoisting a Mass (one litre) glass of Oktoberfest beer that will always define what the Bavarians call Gemütlichkeit. Editor’s Note: Oktoberfest returns to Irondequoit’s Camp Eastman on Lakeshore Blvd., September 12-14 & 20-21. Visit irondequoit.org/ oktoberfest2013festival for details. Ariana Gillis Forget Me Not By Scott Gudell

She exudes a southern Appalachian sound even though she’s from “the west (well, compared to Rochester, since she was born 90 miles west of here in the St. Catherine’s area of Ontario, Canada, on the southern edge of Lake Ontario). And like “honourary Canadian Neko Case, singer/ writer Ariana Gillis knows how to draw the listener in with unique tales. With her new release, Forget Me Not, Gillis sends sparks f lying from the speakers with lush, quirky and atmospheric lyrics, and offers a sound and style drenched with one-of-a-kind creativity. The collection of songs is creative, different, bleak and seemingly crafted to stun you each and every second. Her little girl innocence (she’s still in her early 20’s but already has a few music awards on her fireplace mantle) creates a sonic smoke screen that eventually dissipates, revealing a focused, forceful artist. Sure, she’s still “country meets folk, but the merging point can be cataclysmic. So here are a few lyrics to get you started: “Sudden changes, always changes/Just roll with them, keep on living/die, die, die‚ from the frantic “The Cove‚ or‚ “Crash, crash my heart just stopped working/Splat, splat, I fell all the way down the stairs‚ from “Samuel Starr. Other songs paint equally vivid images. With Forget Me Not, Gillis is as sad as a piece of old, grey driftwood and as giddy as a sparkling and optimistic youngster‚ and the entire rainbow hues in between. Editor’s Note: Ms. Gillis is scheduled to perform at Bernunzio’s Uptown Music on East Avenue, September 14.

know that people are, indeed, being watched, that out in the real world, you and I are being watched. John Crowley gives us some terrific cinematic moments, such as when he juxtaposes scenes of Martin questioning Farroukh with scenes of Claudia, in some other location, questioning Farroukh’s wife and son. Crowley attains a whole different feel when he

shows us the thoughts of Martin and Claudia, silently thinking of each other, flashing back to when they were in happier times. It’s a film where complications not only ensue, they keep getting more complicated, before they’re resolved. It has a conclusion that initially feels tacked on, dealing with issues of justice and injustice, of fairness and morality, but then ends up feeling just right.

CLASSICS

CLOSED CIRCUIT

Written by Steven Knight; directed by John Crowley With Eric Bana, Rebecca Hall, Jim Broadbent, Ciaran Hinds Rated R By Ed Symkus Any idea what it means in the British legal system when a defendant is assigned both a barrister and an advocate? (Hint: They’re both lawyers.) Or what about when a British judge orders a recess at a trial, then says to the remaining barristers and advocates in the courtroom, “Wigs off.” Don’t worry. Even if you don’t get all of the inner workings, it’s pretty easy to figure out what’s going on in this busily plotted contemporary thriller about a terrorist trial in London. Yes, things are a little hard to understand while they’re being woven together and then played out, but everything makes sense in the end. And that’s fine. The characters are involved in a big twisty mystery, so why shouldn’t viewers also have a bit of trouble figuring out what’s really going on? Director John Crowley kicks off Closed Circuit in unnerving style, reminiscent of what Brian De Palma did so well in his ’70s film, with multiple images f lashing up across the screen, all of them shots from surveillance cameras, all focusing on bustling London streets, all building to a massive terrorist explosion. Six months later, a trial has begun. Our hero (or is he an anti-hero?), Martin (Eric Bana) is a successful barrister who has just been brought in to defend Farroukh (Denis Moschitto), the man implicated in the bombing that killed 120 people. It’s briefly remarked that Martin has taken

over for another barrister who just committed suicide. (That’s called foreshadowing.) There’s also the introduction of Claudia (Rebecca Hall), who will serve as Farroukh’s special advocate, working alongside but not actually together with Martin. Here’s some of that Brit law business. Even though Martin and Claudia are on the same side of the case, due to the existence of some “secret evidence,” they’re not allowed to communicate with each other. But since they’re former lovers and aren’t exactly on speaking terms these days, that’s no big deal. Yet the fact that there was an affair between them, and they’re not telling anyone, is enough to make their involvement in the case just this side of illegal. All of that, and the plot hasn’t even begun to thicken. But it sure does. This is a film about paranoia, about people wondering if they’re being watched, if they’re being followed, about national security and whether or not the government should be called the good guys or the bad guys. Martin and Claudia have plenty of murky business to deal with – seriously, how does one even start to grasp the idea of “secret evidence?” – when suddenly the Secret Service is involved (and they’re not very friendly), there’s talk of an informant who might or might not talk, and we meet Joanna (Julia Stiles), an American journalist who’s snooping around with questions about that first barrister’s supposed suicide. Though it all starts with a horrifying explosion, it’s mostly a movie of words and worries, until it seamlessly and almost unnoticeably turns into a full-blown thriller. Points of view from public sur veillance cameras keep popping up, making sure we
