Several other artists will take the stage as well Seamus Begley, named Ireland’s 2013 Traditional Singer of the Year; award-winning Irish step dancer Samantha Har vey; Sean Gavin on flute and uilleann pipes; Oisin Mac Diarmada on fiddle; and students from East Rochester’s own Dunleav y School of Irish Dance. Kodak Hall @ Eastman Theatre | Dec. 12 & 14 In a program titled “Bach & Respighi� guest conductor James Feddeck leads the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in a program that also features Mr. Feddeck on harpsichord. Assistant conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra, Feddeck has conducted orchestras across the county and frequently performs organ recitals across Europe and the U.S. in addition to his work on the oboe and harpsichord. Water St. Music Hall | Dec. 14 The American funk and soul group, Rober t Randolph & the Family Band, is known for a sound that blends rock and blues with soulful gospel grooves. Randolph has appeared with Eric Clapton, Santana, and the Dave Matthews Band. Rolling Stone named the Grammy-nominated artist one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” Releases include Live at the Wetlands, Unclassified, Colorblind and We Walk This Road. His song, “We Got Hoops,” was used by both the NBA and WNBA to promote their leagues; and “Ain’t Nothing Wrong With That” is featured in several commercials. His latest album is Lickety Split...Bostonbased soul and R&B artist Jesse Dee’s influences read like a Who’s Who of classic soul music - Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Etta James, Al Green and many others. Jesse, however, is not just a student of the classics - he also loves the new wave of roots artists like James Hunter, Amos Lee and John Legend. His 2008 release, Bittersweet Batch, has recently been followed by On My Mind/In My Heart on Alligator Records.

Harmony House | Dec. 15 The all-female group, C’est Bon Cajun Dance Band, features Barbara Sanders on accordion, Susi Mills and Jane DeLisa on fiddle, Betsy Fuller on guitar and Evelyn Schneider on bass. They perform hard rocking, foot stomping Cajun music with attitude. C’est Bon has been singing and playing Cajun music in the northeast area for nearly twenty years. The ladies are in town to play at the annual Rochester Cajun Network Holiday Party.

Based in Syracuse, they’re known for their high energy shows that have earned the group fans on the club and festival circuit and attention from regional critics. THC has four full lengths to its credit, the latest being Talkabout. Tim’s latest solo release is Gone By Now.

Comedy Club | Dec. 19 - 21 Virginia native Nick Turner now splits his time between New York City and LA. Rediscovering A Texas Classic - The Spoetzl Brewery by Mark Tichenor Unless you’re from Texas, you’ve likely never heard of the Spoetzl Brewery. It’s small, with only 120 employees. They never affiliated with any of the big boys, and the name sounds like a type of Swabian dumpling. Chances are, however, that you have heard of Spoetzl’s claim to fame: Shiner Bock. It’s through this iconic Texas brew that one gains an appreciation of the resilience and old-school tenacity of this classic brewery. Not so long ago, the American brewing industry was a shambles. Prohibition drove most of the small breweries out of business, and many more were killed by the megabreweries, whose preferred method of friendly competition was aquisition and liquidation of regional brewers with the temerity to stand in their way. By the late 1970s, only a few independent breweries remained. Spoetzl was one such survivor, and its history intertwines richly with that of the German Americans whose descendents settled the Lone Star State in the second half of the 19th century. Founded as the Shiner Brewing Association in Shiner, Texas in 1909, the brewery was able, after a couple of years, to get ahold of a Bavarian-born and trained brewmaster by the name of Kosmos Spoetzl, who implemented the techniques and formulations of Munich breweries. He first brewed Shiner Bock in 1917, and the beer has been with us ever since. Well, mostly ever since. In 1920 a bunch of zealous people did a really dumb thing and enacted prohibition, which pretty much killed all legal brewing enterprise. Shiner soldiered through it by selling ice (which must have come with its own challenges in Texas), and near-beer, which was very likely nearly delicious. Spoetzl was one of five independent breweries remaining in Texas after repeal, and managed to hold onto a sliver of the market as the major national brewers moved in.

The craft beer m ove m e n t breathed new life into the brewer y, transforming Shiner Bock into a symbol of state pride and ultimately catapulting the brewer y to becoming the 4th largest craft brewer in the country. Following the m ove m e n t , t h e brewer y branched out, makine interpretations of Belgian witbier, Hefeweizen, seasonal beers, and a gamut of other styles in a move that changed the Spoetzl’s direction from a plainclothes regional beer producer to a true craft brewer. Now that they’re rolling into Upstate New York, I gave three Spoetzl beers a taste. Shiner Bock, the classic, does not strictly adhere to the German style. Rather it’s a bock filtered through the American experience over time. Pleasantly sweet and lightly grainy, Shiner Bock veers away from an expected thick mouthfeel and remains quenching, yet substantial.

It’s hearty, but not overbearing beer that deserves a premium status while remaining appealing to a broad spectrum of beer drinkers. With this as the brewery’s flagship product, it’s easy to see how Spoetzl was able to carve out a strong market among superpremium and craft beer lovers. Belgian white ale (witbier) relies on sensual clashes for effect, and Shiner White Wing pulls them off with aplomb. An alluring golden hue is countered by nearopacity as the yeast floats in suspension. A sweet aroma devolves into strong notes of coriander and clove, and those spice notes reprise themselves on the palate, with an unapologetic allspice finish and the tiniest hint of hops as you swallow. It’s pleasantly prickly, and refreshing as hell. Most holiday beers tend to club the imbiber over the head with spices and hamfisted hop flavor. This is not the case with Shiner Cheer. Unexpectedly soft on the palate, this beer, is a big, fragrant whirl of blackcurrant, molasses and...peach? The low notes of dark fruit and toffee get nicely offset by sharper tree fruit character that mostly reveals itself on the exhale after the swallow. I’ve never been a big fan of holiday ales, but this is a beer I would not only order, but look forward to in the following year. Disclaimer: I started this col-

umn expecting to be underwhelmed by Spoetzl, based on a predetermined image of staid regional-size American brewery stereotypes of name-coasting and success through geographic favoritism. Instead, I discovered three skillfully brewed beers, all of which brought something interesting to the table. Based on what I tasted today, Shiner beers are a more than welcome addition to the Western New York beer scene, and while they may not prove that everything is better in Texas, they certainly make a compelling argument that those German American cowboys know a thing or two about making very good beer.

Abandon Brewing Company is officially open in the most rustic old barn you’ve ever seen, just south of Penn Yan. Brewer Jeff Hildebrandt, having arrived via stints at Custom Brewcrafters and Ommegang Brewing Company, is making the most of his cramped brewhouse, making beers for onpremise sale and regional availability. The whole range of Abandon’s beer is high quality. but the standout is Har vest Saison, a fresh take on Belgian farmhouse ale. It’s zesty, with lots of citrus and a rustic malt character, kind of like an autumn picnic in a glass. Look for Abandon at Rochester area beer pubs like Donnelly’s, Quimby’s and The Tap and Mallet, or use their existence as an excuse to explore that beautiful Finger Lakes region we so love to brag about. Thank goodness they don’t all have to be introduced again. The action can just begin, and there’s plenty of it, compliments of Jackson and his extraordinary grasp of how to merge live actors with CGI effects, as well as, along with

his writing team, the ability to tell a thrilling story and give some depth to the characters within it. Hold on, there’s still a bit of a problem with all of those characters, as unless you’re one of those aforementioned geeks, you’re going to have some trouble keeping track of them and their names and who among them is related to whom. But that’s OK. Just go with the energetic f low. You’ll soon figure out that the Dwarves and the Hobbit and the wizard are the good guys, that the hideous Orcs who are hunting them down because they have “a taste for Dwarf blood” are the bad guys, and the Wood-Elves – Orlando Bloom returns as Prince Legolas, and Evangeline Lilly (Lost) is introduced as Captain of the Guard Tauriel – are somewhere in between. (Note: Legolas only appeared in The Lord of the Rings books, not The Hobbit, and Tauriel is a newly invented character, but

If the ecstatic reaction from Tolkien geeks and cloak- and beard-wearing fans of the book and the first movie at last week’s world premier of part two of Peter Jackson’s trilogy is any indication, it’s all going to happen again. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Smaug being the dragon that decimated the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor and now calmly sleeps inside Erebor’s Lonely Mountain, beneath the remains of the biggest treasure of gold since the days of Ali Baba, picks up right where the first film left off. Thirteen Dwarves, headed by their future king Thorin (Richard Armitage), along with the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the Hobbit Bilbo (Martin Freeman) are on, as everyone seems to be in a Tolkien adventure, a journey, this one heading back to Lonely Mountain to reclaim Erebor from the dragon.

their incorporation in this film is pulled off without a hitch, and fans were not complaining.) That energy comes from a few truly fantastic set pieces that regularly place our little heroes in peril. Arachnophobes might have some trouble watching the Dwarves’ encounter with the huge and hungry spiders of Mirkwood Forest (I know I did!). Yet scary sequences like that are balanced with the wild comedy that’s part of the same group’s barrel ride down some roaring rapids. But the film’s high point occurs near the end when the titular psychotic dragon (mellifluously and malevolently voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) makes his appearance in conversation with Bilbo, and turns out to be the best flying, fire-breathing dragon in cinema history. One of the coolest things about the film, at least for fans of British TV, is that the pairing of and acting by Cumberbatch and Freeman in the dragon and Hobbit scene is 180 degrees away from the equally wonderful work they do as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson on the BBC series Sherlock. Yet the film is by no means for everyone. It’s extremely violent (I’m talking about arrows through heads and decapitations) and even though the visual effects are astounding, the much-ballyhooed 48 frames-per-second projection still makes some of it look like a soap opera (it would be best to catch it in IMAX 3D). The finale, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, will hit theaters on December 17, 2014.
