director’s welcome There has been a huge response to the Shaun Tan: Suburban Odyssey exhibition, highlighting the deep, personal connection people feel to Tan’s popular illlustrated books and films. Suburban Odyssey closes Sunday 15 July. FAC is proud to present Irregular Correct: New Art from Glasgow, another historic port city that is home to significant contemporary art makers. This year Fashion Talks, hosted by Meri Fatin, takes a fresh approach and presents three significant Australian curators and collectors of fashion. WAAPA’s brilliant graduating acting students present Shakespeare’s magical A Midsummer Night’s Dream in a simply staged, pared-back version that will delight the whole family. I hope we see you soon at FAC. Jim Cathcart Director

the irregular correct: new art from glasgow sat 21 july–sun 16 september | opening fri 20 july | 6:30pm
The Irregular Correct: New Art from Glasgow presents a line-up of significant contemporary artists from Glasgow, Scotland; showing painting, sculptural installation, performance and video.
Artists include Michael Fullerton, Iain Hetherington, Rob Kennedy, Sophie Macpherson, Alan Michael, Ciara Phillips, Alex Pollard, Clare Stephenson, Stephen Sutcliffe and Jane Topping.
From a gritty port town, Glasgow has evolved into an internationally renowned artistic hotspot and a major influence on British and European art.
Commissioned by FAC, The Irregular Correct is curated by Alex Pollard and Clare Stephenson. Graduates of the Glasgow School of Art, Pollard and Stephenson both live and work in Glasgow, and have collaborated on recent exhibitions Four Fantasies at the Pump House Gallery in London and The Dirty Hands at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Glasgow.
With several biennales to their names, and including artists from Saatchi Gallery’s recent Newspeak: British Art Now exhibition, these artists have helped shape the Glasgow art scene over the last fifteen years.

world music andrew varano sat 21 july–sun 16 september opening fri 20 july | 6:30pm Emerging local artist Andrew Varano presents his first solo exhibition. Featuring kinetic sound sculptures, video installations and Zen fountain prototypes he questions our seemingly inherent desire to set up relationships and narratives between things. Varano uses the ‘memory palace’, a technique to organise memories, to draw on disparate ideas from amateur beekeeping, conspiracy theory, global cultural production and the characters of Moby Dick, trying to reconcile the relationships between tenuous ideas. Varano was the inaugural winner of the Dr. Harold Schenberg Art Prize for outstanding work in PICA’s Hatched National Graduate Exhibition in 2010. He is a co–director of OK Gallery in Northbridge and the recipient of the Australia Council JUMP national mentorship under internationally recognised contemporary artist Callum Morton.

we don’t need a map november 2012
We don’t need a map: A Martu experience of the Western desert An exhibition of extraordinary artworks and events, We don’t need a map will bring the desert to the city to celebrate the lively, robust and enduring culture of the Martu in the Western Desert. Featuring senior Martu painter Yunkarra Billy Atkins and rising young film-maker Curtis Taylor, alongside over twenty Martu artists, and internationally renowned non-Martu video artist Lynette Walworth, We don’t need a map is a significant, powerful and all-encompassing experience. Included in the exhibition will be stunning Martu paintings, a video work celebrating the public phone in remote communities, aerial desert photography, finely wrought Martu objects and FAC’s Pilbara Garden.

The week-long public program Martu Mob at FAC will include bush tucker cooking, carving and gallery tours with the Martu artists and rangers. We don’t need a map has been developed through collaborations between Martu and non-Martu artists, led by a co-curatorial process involving Martu artist and cultural consultant Kathleen Sorensen, the Manager of Martumili Artist, Gabrielle Sullivan, and FAC Exhibitions Coordinator, Erin Coates. This project is a partnership between FAC, Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa, Martumili Artists and is made possible with support from BHP Billiton.
