the problems of explaining a thunk Image: Steven Dickie, production test shot - The Uncanny Antisage, 2013
sat 23 nov – sun 19 jan opening fri 22 nov | 6:30pm London artist Steven Dickie’s sculptural and other-worldly inventions, sound experiments, videos and performances look at the way we accumulate and process knowledge. Dickie's past works have involved a retro-futuristic concoction of 88 radios that can be ‘played’ by a traditional keyboard (Everything reveals nothing), cacophonies of white noise (Age related hearing loss) and his recurring leitmotif – a dodecahedron that he sees as representing all knowledge. Set amongst a, '2001 a Space Odyssey-esque' installation in our main gallery, The Problems of Explaining a Thunk explores the limits of conventional knowledge through a series of video and installation works that look at our inability to express and explain thoughts. The Problems of Explaining a Thunk has been developed through FAC’s Artist in Residence Program. Production began with a body of material shot predominantly in Yalgorup National Park, WA, with further material shot at Dungeness and London, UK.

sat 23 nov – sun 19 jan opening fri 22 nov | 6:30pm Dream Zone is an installation that uses Melbourne artist Karen Casey’s pre-recorded brainwaves to create hypnotic, lattice-like patterns that morph with the undulations of brainwave frequencies. The patterns produced are reminiscent of various forms of sacred art and are intended to invite contemplation and draw the viewer into a deeply meditative state. In 2010 Casey launched the Global Mind Project, an arts and cognitive neuroscience venture combining mind sciences research and digital technology, to create brainwave generated video art and live performance. Casey pushes art’s technological limits, questioning what happens if the need for mechanical processes is eliminated and, instead, we simply allow our thoughts to creatively manifest through technology.

sat 23 nov – sun 19 jan opening fri 22 nov | 6:30pm Being Eurasian brings together two artists at different stages of their career whose work deals with similar issues of identity, history and ancestry. Abdullah – a highly lauded emerging WA artist who has twice been a finalist in the Archibald Prize – has created paintings that explore the ways in which people of mixed Asian and European ancestry culturally define themselves. Dr Leslie Morgan - an artist and academic dealing with race, diaspora, migration and whiteness - has created paintings that depict the entry of Anglo-Indians into Australia in 1947 at a time of the White Australia Policy. The paintings deal with the docking of the HMAS Manoora in Fremantle in 1947. The ship was dispatched by the Australian Government to rescue British citizens from India prior to its independence and partition, and on its return it held seven hundred Anglo-Indians and twenty Polish refugees. Immigration officials were unsure if the Anglo-Indians could be allowed entry given the White Australia policy and in order to save face the Minister allowed them entry. artists in residence Did you know that at any one time there are nine local and visiting artists in residence at FAC and the Moores Building, experimenting and developing their practice? If you're interested in arts practice or simply curious feel free to pop into their studios for a behind the scenes peek.
Alex MacIver (WA) borrows from popular culture to create new urban mythologies that question social value. MacIver attempts to achieve this through constructing visual narratives with paint and appropriated imagery. room 3 Alex Murray-Leslie (GER), co-founder of multidisciplinary art group Chicks On Speed, will undertake research in conjunction with SymbioticA that investigates the way textiles and clothing can be used as body-centric musical instruments. Additionally, Alex will develop a film script for Chicks On Speed. artist STUDIO 6 Ben Rodin (WA) uses drawing, sculpture and video to focus on current trends in social praxis, and considers the implications of art’s role in directly shaping the ‘grand narrative’. artist STUDIO 2 David Brophy (WA), drawing upon his passion for surfing and other freestyle sports, will research materials and processes used in these activities to create sculptural objects that relate to the extensions and limitations of human physicality. artist STUDIO 9
Dave Carson (WA) returns to FAC with his new project DESERTsnowball, a digital storytelling project celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Bluebird K7, a hydroplane that broke the world water speed record in Dumbleyung in Western Australia in 1964. Carson will work with digital strategist Paul Houghton. room 1 Lilly Kaiser(WA), will create a body of work exploring the social interaction between dogs and people and the language of laughter. artist STUDIO 4 Mental Powers (WA) are a local band who will work with Perth-based musicians Tim Loughman and Brendan Jay to develop songs, music and sounds that utilise the FAC building's natural reverb and field recordings from around the grounds. artist studio 3 Nien Schwarz (WA) uses topographic maps of the Australasian region as a launching pad for developing a research project that explores links between remnant bush and traditional and modern land use practices, between economics and ecology, and between physical and psychological mapping. artist STUDIO 5

Nina Juniper (WA) explores ideas of architectural space, the public realm and spatial history. Through the analysis of socio-architectural interactions and the materiality of architectural space, her work describes places of transit and dysfunction. artist STUDIO 5 Sandy McKendrick (WA) incorperates video stills, drawings and found objects sourced whilst collecting flotsam and jetsam on Australia’s coast to create artwork that investigates the origins and cultural identity of the found materials. Studio 8 Kieron Broadhurst (WA) has created a studio project that negotiates the bleed between popular culture and self-identity and functions like a social networking site. Returning to FAC for Shareparty 2.0, Broadhurst again asks people to share something with him, from which work will be created. His book Shareparty 1.0 created from the first part of his residency will be available. artist STUDIO 1

16 Nov–1 Dec The Contours of Emptiness by Paul Kaptein uses woodcarving to explore notions of emptiness and remix. By sampling from various cultures he suggests a remixed present, where things are not quite truth, yet not quite fiction.
16 Nov–1 Dec In Tipping Point–Red Canoe sculptor Peter Hancock contemplates the concepts of what is needed, or perceived as needed, and what is wanted and desired in the western world. Red Canoe is a sculptural response in steel and wire to this construct.
16 Nov–1 Dec Intentional lacunae that taste of raspberries and smell of rum sees Mardi West utilise incised negative space and internal structures derived from architecture and fashion photography. These missing spaces between result in visual battles that disorientate your perception.
7–22 Dec In Emergent Convergent Floyd Devellerez creates a series of drawings, prints, and digital videos that document the evolution of drawing software which incorporates artificial intelligence algorithms as it interacts with the artist’s work. The drawings are generated by the way the software is influenced by the organisation of certain types of visual art.
