director’s welcome We are pleased to again have two projects in music and visual arts as part of this year’s Perth Festival, reinforcing FAC’s credentials as a genuine multi-arts organisation. Inside Running is a group exhibition that explores the participating artists’ relationship between their chosen leisure sports and their art. Soft Soft Loud – The Antihero Suite is an intimate concert of contemporary music. In Principal, WASO Principals in Recital is a new chapter in our partnership with WASO, after the orchestra performed the last two summers as part of our free Sunday Courtyard Music series. WAAPA Direct again presents the best and brightest from WA’s premier music academy in a once-only show. Don’t miss the final days of our epic Martu project We don’t need a map, closing 20 January. sat 2 february – sun 7 april opening fri 1 february | 6:30pm Inside Running: the sport of art brings together nine artists whose passion for sport has bled into their art, in an exhibition of specially commissioned work. Sport takes constant practice and for these artists the discipline and challenges of training and playing has become part of the way they make art and what they make art about. The artists’ commitment to sports, ranging from surfing, scuba diving and basketball to boxing and climbing, informs and influences their work, which includes video, sculpture and large-scale installation. More about participation and less about spectatorship Inside Running delves into Australia’s underlying obsession to play. A project by Richard Lewer and Ric Spencer

a martu experience of the western desert
closes sun 20 january What an incredible journey it's been. From its inception more than two years ago to the remarkable opening night in November, We don't need a map has won acclaim from both critics and audiences. Bringing the desert to the city to celebrate the lively and enduring culture of the Martu – the traditional owners of a vast area of WA’s Western Desert, this remarkable exhibition is a must see. Including the work of more than 30 artists, We don't need a map is an exploration of the Martu people, their way of life, the way they care for country and belong to it. As well as illustrating the distinct contemporary visual language of the Martu, this landmark exhibition breaks down barriers by bringing together Martu and other artists to collaborate and exhibit together. Featuring stunning paintings, cutting-edge new media collaborations, finely wrought objects, aerial desert photography and bush tucker, the exhibition has inspired audiences. Co-curated by Erin Coates; FAC Exhibitions Coordinator, Kathleen Sorensen; Martu artist and Cultural Consultant and Gabrielle Sullivan; Martumili Artists Manager. This project is a partnership between FAC, Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa and Martumili Artists. It was made possible with support from BHP Billiton Iron Ore.

artists in residence FAC’s AIR program enables artists to engage in research and development. FAC is committed to supporting local and visiting artists execute ideas and projects while bringing their work into public dialogue. The AIR program has nine studios at FAC and two at the Moores Building. Andrew Daly (WA/China) produces paintings influenced by his recent experience of living in China. artist STUDIO 8 until march Fiona Gavino (WA) explores avenues for incorporating ancient Indonesian weaving techniques into her contemporary sculptural practice. artist studio 4 until january Josephine Wilson (WA), taking references from research and objects gathered in India, explores the poetic function of language through text and audio. artist STUDIO 3 from february Kelda Free and David Brazier (UK), having lived and worked in Europe for ten years, return to WA to create work which explores the experience of finding themselves as foreigners in their hometown. artist STUDIO 4 from february Phoebe McDonald (QLD), working across a range of mediums including photography and sculpture, develops new work that investigates light and landscape, time and tide. artist STUDIO 2 from february Richard Lewer (AU/NZ) produces drawing, painting and animation which focuses on the dark side of human behaviour, place and social identity. artist STUDIO 6 until february
Rachel Verheggen (WA) observes the overlooked and hidden spaces of FAC while continuing her ongoing investigation into the material nature of paint and the tensions between representation and abstraction. artist studio 9 until march Sarah Elson (WA) works on methods of re-fleshing found and cast organic elements into drawings in metal. Her practice involves traditional metalsmithing techniques and drawing. artist studio 6 from march Shannon Williamson (NZ) uses human anatomy as a point of departure to compose figurative and non-figurative drawings that explore the body and its sensations. artist STUDIO 7 Teelah George (WA), using drawing as a means to investigate the relationship between body, object and material, engages processes that demand exploration within close proximity to the observed body. artist STUDIO 5

The Management (WA), (Ryan Nazzari, Lesley Munro, Julianne Clifford), was created out of shared interest in each other’s processes and conceptual concerns. The Management explore the question ‘What makes a drawing’ through collaborative activities and strategies of negotiation. artist STUDIO 1 until january Trevor Bly (WA), exploring the aesthetics of suburban iconography in Perth’s neighbourhoods, will research the colours and codes that represent already established cliques and subgroups of Perth’s street artists. artist STUDIO 9 from march
STUDIOS: Expressions of Interest Artists are invited to register their interest in a six month leasing agreement for one of the two artists’ studios at the rear of The Moores Building (46 Henry Street, Fremantle) during 2013. Both studios are approximately 40 sq. metres, with lights and running water. Submissions close Mon 7 January 2013 for activities commencing February 13. The Free Antiques Campaign | Ross Potter attempts to capture the character of buildings as they gradually decay tor are altered by those who inhabit them. Potter believes that the best way to capture the identity of buildings is to draw them with utmost simplicity, using only an HB pencil and artist’s eraser.
12–27 january '260’ is a group exhibition with artists Denise Thornton, Mark Smith, Anthea Jack, Martyn Casey and Jonnine Kaiser. This mixed media exhibition explores themes such as the cell, sense of perception, the individual’s environment, our relationship with animals and the intimacy we share with family, friends and strangers.

23 february–10 march Not a Still Life | Davena Cox explores the theatre of life using drawings to create emotionally charged narratives. Her dynamic images speak lyrically about the fragility and comedy of life. Cox considers her works 'small soap operas' that investigate the human condition. Reflections of Innocence | Dane Craig and N’antawan Maneejan present portrait photography of Indian children by Craig. These striking images are accompanied by compellingly detailed charcoal drawings by Maneejan. Together the works search for a common sense of human understanding.
16–31 march Hearts and Vessels | Errol McMahon collects objects and then produces metal sculptures from these objects. The sculptures are abstract but still retain and reflect upon the images of the everyday Still Life and Unmarried Brides | Kieron Hayter presents two separate photographic exhibitions which explore the artistic historic values of still life photography and the wedding photo. The images describe odd scenarios, and while maybe not strictly considered still life or a wedding photo, play with the concept and definition of what they may mean.

Is it music theatre, cabaret or opera? Heinz Gruber’s (Austria) Frankenstein!!! crosses genres in anarchic fashion in pursuit of comicstrip heroes and film idols, demanding virtuosic performance of story-telling from baritone, James Clayton. Based on a Spanish tale, Living Toys by Thomas Ades (UK) contrast a small boy's heroic ideals with the inadequacy felt by the adults around him. The young British pianist has been hailed as one of the great composers of his generation.
The Antihero Suite brings together WA’s finest musicians and acclaimed clarinettist Paul Dean (Vic) in ensemble for an intimate performance of contemporary music in the Inner Courtyard.
Steve Newcomb’s (AUS) The Antihero Suite, commissioned by FAC, portrays villains of arthouse film through reimagining cinema’s most memorable scores. Through deft overlay of toy piano, electronic processing and live ensemble Newcomb explores good versus evil.
Exploring who we are in life and imagination, and inspired by stories of superheroes and heroic villains, The Antihero Suite presents three exhilarating works. Jane Kircher-Lindner (bassoon), born and trained in New Zealand, was Principal Bassoon with Auckland Philharmonia before joining WASO in 2006.
Andrew Nicholson (flute), born and trained in the UK, was formerly Principal Flute with the Royal Philharmonic, the Hallé, Hong Kong Philharmonic and BBC National Orchestra of Wales before joining WASO in 2010.
Leanne Glover (oboe), a graduate of UWA, studied in Holland and Switzerland and is a long-standing member of WASO joining in 1990. Rod McGrath (cello), born and trained in the UK, joined WASO in 1997 after 20 years as Co-Principal Cello of the London Symphony Orchestra.
