director’s welcome January marks the beginning of another year of eclectic and compelling programming at Fremantle Arts Centre. On January 31 we open BALI: return economy as part of the Perth International Arts Festival, an ambitious exhibition that looks beyond well-worn depictions of Bali and WA to get to the heart of a fascinating relationship between neighbours.

We’re also looking forward to presenting another instalment of our acclaimed music series Soft Soft Loud as part of the Festival. SSL is an intimate way to experience the best of post classical music in our beautiful Inner Courtyard.

Finally, we were incredibly proud to have rounded out 2013 by winning the Creative Partnerships Australia, Partnering Award (WA) with project partners BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Martumili Artists and Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa for our highly popular exhibition We don’t need a map: a Martu experience of the Western Desert.

sat 1 feb – thurs 27 mar opening fri 31 jan | 6:30pm BALI: return economy is an expansive exhibition that looks beyond the clichÊs and kitsch souvenirs to get to the heart of a dynamic relationship between neighbours.

Featuring works as diverse as video art, political cartoons, age-old wayang paintings and the cutting edge contemporary Balinese art often missed by tourists, this exhibition draws together an eclectic, far-reaching group of leading Indonesian and WA artists.

BALI: return economy also presents pieces from some of WA's largest private collections of Balinese art including works from the collection of Chris and Mary Hill, the Bernadt Family collection, Kamasan paintings from the collection of John Johnson, sculptures from the City of Fremantle Art Collection and ceramics from the Edith Cowan University collection.

PUBLIC PROGRAM To encourage a dialogue and exchange of ideas about the relationship between WA and Bali this exhibition will be accompanied by the Artspoken talks series Excess Baggage on Saturday, 1 February, 11am.

Balinese-focussed art courses have also been added to our learning program and we are thrilled to have Balinese fusion guitarist Balawan performing at Sunday Music on 2 February at 2pm, free entry.

exhibitions closing soon STEVEN DICKIE (UK) The Problems of Explaining a Thunk London artist Steven Dickie’s sculptural and otherworldly inventions, sound experiments, videos and performances look at the way we accumulate and process knowledge. This large video installation in our main gallery examines the limits of expressing and explaining thoughts.

KAREN CASEY (VIC) Dream Zone Dream Zone is an installation that uses Melbourne artist Karen Casey’s brainwaves to create hypnotic, lattice-like patterns that morph and change with the undulations of her meditating mind.

Karen Casey is represented by Anna Pappas Gallery.

ABDUL ABDULLAH (WA) & LESLIE MORGAN (VIC) Being Eurasian Being Eurasian brings together two artists whose work deals with identity and ancestry. Archibald Prize finalist Abdullah explores how people of mixed heritage define themselves while Morgan depicts the arrival of 700 Anglo Indians in Fremantle during the White Australia policy.

Abdul Abdullah is represented by Fehily Contemporary.

CITY OF FREMANTLE ART COLLECTION Now Then Painting Now Then Painting presents a selection of paintings which highlight the significant focus painting has enjoyed in the City of Fremantle Art Collection and WA arts practice over the last forty years.

The recently launched Fremantle Arts Centre WWII Time Window App is a free augmented reality tour that shows visitors how the FAC site would have looked when the American Navy Submarine fleet used the former Lunatic Asylum as a depot during WWII. At specific locations the tour creates a window back in time where American sailors, colourful locals and the building itself literally comes to life before your eyes using technology that augments your view of the current site.

soft soft loud featuring compositions by bryce dessner, nico muhly & james ledger thurs 13 FEB | inner courtyard | Doors 7pm | show 8pm Set under the stars in Fremantle Arts Centre’s evocative Inner Courtyard, Soft Soft Loud is a highly intimate way to experience the best in progressive, post classical music. The series is presented as part of the Perth International Arts Festival program and has a reputation for pairing cutting edge, boundary-pushing compositions with an ensemble of WA's best musicians.

In 2014 we feature acclaimed Brooklyn composer Bryce Dessner. A Yale graduate and guitarist in The National, Dessner has emerged as one of the most exciting talents in new music today. Beyond his role in genre-defying music ensemble Clogs, Dessner’s collaborators include luminaries such as Steve Reich, Philip Glass, David Lang and Sufjan Stevens. In November the composer released Aheym, a critically lauded album performed by the Kronos Quartet.

Works hand-picked by Dessner from his catalogue will be performed by the SSL ensemble and as a rare treat fo Perth audiences, the composer himself will perform his work for solo guitar, Feedback Counterpoint. The evening will also include a work composed by cutting edge New York composer Nico Muhly, a prodigious talent and contemporary of Dessner.

In another coup, this year’s Soft Soft Loud will include the premiere of a work by WA composer James Ledger. An APRA Art Music Award and ARIA winner, Ledger was Resident Composer for the 2013 Australian Festival of Chamber Music and has recently toured his acclaimed song cycle, Conversations with Ghosts with Paul Kelly, to a rapturous response nationally.

artists in residence Did you know that at any one time there are nine local and visiting artists in residence at FAC and the Moores Building, experimenting and developing their practice? If you're interested in arts practice or simply curious feel free to pop into their studios for a behind the scenes peek.

Mental Powers (WA) are a local act who are working with Perth-based musicians Tim Loughman and Brendan Jay to develop songs, music, field recordings and sounds that utilise the FAC building's natural reverb and grounds. Studio 3 Luke Aleksandrow (WA) will record audio and video on site at FAC to create a series of installations that explore ideas of unheard silence. Aleksandrow welcomes the public into his studio to share their thoughts on these installations. Studio 4 Lilly Kaiser (WA) will continue creating work which looks at the energy and movement generated through the social interaction of dogs and people. Studio 4 Loren Kronemyer (USA) will reinterpret antiquated anatomy textbooks and instructional wall hangings to create mixed media works which capture the disturbing and visceral complexity of embodiment. Studio 5 Drew Pettifer (VIC) will collaborate with local dancers to investigate the relationship between the figure and the landscape. Pettifer will photograph male subjects in the WA landscape, documenting the two diametrically opposed settings within the region of ocean and desert. Studio 6

Chicks on Speed (INTL) are a world-famous , globetrotting art duo comprised of Alex Murray-Leslie and Melissa Logan. During their residency the art provocateurs will be preparing for their upcoming major exhibition and live performance at FAC in April. Studio 6 + 9 Nien Schwarz (WA) uses topographic maps of the Australasian region that were printed in 1942 for wartime distribution as the launching pad for a research project. The project explores links between remnant bush and traditional and modern land use practices, between economics and ecology, and between physical and psychological mapping.

Studio 7 Sandy McKendrick (WA) incorporates video stills, drawings and found objects sourced whilst collecting flotsam and jetsam on Australia’s coast to create artworks that investigate the origins and cultural identity of the materials. visual art | artists in residence | 15 Q & A: ALEX MACIVER room 4 WA artist Alex Maciver was the winner of the 2013 Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award supported by Little Creature Brewing and is now an artist in residence at FAC. Here he discusses his winning work and residency.

Q: Your residency involves developing hybrid ‘painting sculptural works’ that involve paper or papier-mache being rumpled over stands. What interests you about this form?

A: The sculptural forms have many similarities to the way I approach a painting on canvas. I firstly take time and precision in the preparation of the form, the platform or base, like crafting a stretcher for canvas. Once this platform has been developed and the work is structurally sound, I can approach the destruction or mark making with the same ferocity that I allow in making a painting.

Ting Chaong Wen (Taiwan) will be based at FAC from January-March as part of the Asialink program. Wen has specific interests in migration, survival and history and will delve into Fremantle’s archaeological and historical archives while reflecting upon the experience of the contemporary artist removed from their habitat to an overseas arts centre. Wen will consider how this ‘migration’ will unbalance art and life, break rules and routines, and seek to translate his findings into a studio installation that evokes a sense of the mobile experience. Q: Your Print Award-winning work blurred the boundaries between printmaking and painting.

Is it these blurry spaces between techniques or established forms that excite you as an artist?

A: I guess so. I suppose it is the romantic notion of making and exploring artwork that excites me most. The role I have as an artist is a creator then destroyer in some sense. Although the event of making a work happens in the studio, it is then reflected in the display of the work in a gallery.

I aim for an artwork to break the silence of an exhibition space.

Q: Have you done residencies before and do you find them a useful way to extend your practice?

A: I have been lucky enough to have been involved in many different residencies all over and believe this directly influences my organic development and understanding as an artist. My first residency was in February 2008 and was through the Scottish Arts Council. I was also part of a curatorial development residency in NYC through my involvement with GENERATOR Projects. To date it remains a major highlight of my artistic development.

The Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery is a City of Fremantle subsidised art facility that promotes a wide range of contemporary art by providing low-cost gallery and project spaces in Fremantle's historic West End.

the moores building 11–26 Jan Excess Baggage is an unusual group exhibition set up as a maze complete with dead ends and shortcuts. The maze will not only be used to hang and enclose artworks but will itself be a canvas for artworks. Some panels include windows housing jewellery or shelves holding handmade books while others carry two-dimensional work, hanging as if on ordinary walls. Artists include Lisa Bowden, Naomi Byrne, Kim Christian, Arianne Flora, Jaye Quin and Jan Withers. t

26 March–11 May Experience all the fun of the fair within a circus big top atmosphere. Life as a Circus, by Denise Eime and Bernie Lynch, creates a world of childlike reality where the obscure becomes the norm and where the outside seems far away.

Part media, part installation, this exhibition includes large paintings, prints on centuryold or organic paper, video, music, hanging structures and papier-maché figurines.

26 March–11 May An exploration of the nature of memory, Evolving Memory is a multimedia installation created by Cynthia White. It includes ceramic and video work which explores the expression of remembering, of how memories shift and change over time and how they can become more an example of the present rather than the past.

Design & Print Textiles Angela Ferolla Create an original design suitable to transfer onto textiles. Learn

and understand the technical and creative side of starting with an idea through to a finished design.

Make a Skirt Gila Cohen Learn to draft a basic A-line or straight skirt that can be adapted in many ways. Spend the first two weeks drafting and cutting your pattern and the rest sewing your skirt and exploring different options of alteration including zips, darts, pleats amongst other techniques. A great way to learn basic sewing techniques that can be adapted for other patterns.

Balinese Cane Basket Weaving Fiona Gavino Learn the art of cane basket weaving and create a number of different size pieces to take away with you. This traditional technique is easy to learn and can be used with a number of materials.

Discover Monoprints – Canvas Wallworks Angela Ferolla Discover the simple yet beautiful art of mono-printing on fabric.

Bring along images or designs that inspire you, trace over them in a painterly manner then print onto fabric. Learn a number of contemporary textile processes to enhance your piece, creating a series of multilayered printed pictures on calico. You will be shown how to stretch these over a frame ready to hang on your wall.

Indigo & Shibori Dyeing Techniques Kate Weedon-Jones Learn how to make and use an Indigo Dye Vat to create a beautiful range of unique fabrics in all shades of blue. Music – Songwriting for Beginners David Hyams This short course has been designed for those who have imagined they could write a song but never knew where to start. Learn the fundamentals of songwriting with acclaimed musician and composer David Hyams.
