From giant, frozen spheres of marine rubbish to a madcap performance art voyage in two tiny ancient boats – Horizon: exploring the West Coast with The Clipperton Project promises to make you rethink WA’s coastline. Inspired by international organisation The Clipperton Project, Fremantle Arts Centre will exhibit the work of 17 artists who have responded to the WA coastline, the horizon and ideas of exploration and adventure. Their diverse works include a recharting of Austrian botanist Carl Von Hugel’s whirlwind trip through WA in 1834 (Rebecca Mayo), the building of ancient coracle boats (Snapcat), an installation exploring caravanning grey nomads (Susanna Castleden), textile maps and photography charting trade and migration through the Indian ocean and majestic photographs of rubbish which has been frozen into balls and placed in-situ on WA’s Southern beaches. The Clipperton Project is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2010 in Scotland by Jon Bonfiglio, a former theatre director and poet, that combines exploration, adventure, seafaring and art to empower and socially activate citizens. The organisation’s maiden voyage involved sending a boat full of artists and scientists to the environmentally-fragile Clipperton Island in the Pacific to create art and research. It is the spirit of this expedition that continues to inform and inspire projects like Horizon.

This exhibition tracks the etchings and screenprints of WA artist Robert Dorizzi who, after graduating from Perth Technical College in 1967, was conscripted to serve in Vietnam from 1969-70. Many of Dorizzi’s remarkable images have not been exhibited previously and draw directly on his post Vietnam experience. It was not until 2000, when he took up art making full time that he rekindled his focus on drawing to hone his graphic output.
The beach is a defining element in the life of Fremantle. It is a significant site of culture and nature, a place of contest and context and a subject explored by artists to investigate links between myth and reality, indigenous and foreign. This exhibition provides a staging point to consider artworks drawn from the Collection that picture life connected to the beach and includes works by Marcus Beilby, Peter Burgess, Laurel Nannup, Martin Parr and Helen Taylor.

Thurs 13 Nov | doors 6pm show 7pm | inner courtyard tickets $35+BF | Student and Seniors Conc. $25+BF from fac.org.au | BAR OPEN Few musical experiences match the spine-tingling effect of a cathedral choir in full flight. This is what Fremantle Arts Centre is offering in our historic Inner Courtyard as we invite the St George’s Cathedral Consort, Perth’s premier ensemble, to perform a far-reaching repertoire of well-known choral, sacred, secular and madrigal music acappella. Renowned WA soprano Sara Macliver will also perform and MC this special evening. Led by acclaimed British organist and conductor Joseph Nolan, the consort has developed a national reputation for excellence with The Australian and The West Australian describing them as ‘elite’, ‘faultless’ and ‘world class’. Images: Consort by Russell Barton Sara Macliver by Rhydian Lewis
The repertoire chosen will appeal to lovers of all music and especially those who wouldn’t usually attend such a performance in a church setting. Highlights include Benjamin Britten's ethereal Hymn to St Cecilia, the dramatic, stirring Five Negro Spirituals by Michael Tippett, the West Side Story classic Somewhere, John Dowland’s jaunty madrigal Fine Knacks for Ladies, George Gershwin’s smooth and sultry Summertime and a lush choral arrangement of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

WED 22 Oct – SUN 2 NOV | fremantle arts centre tickets & program from fac.org.au Proximity Festival is based on one deceptively simple premise – one performer and one audience member at a time. Now in its third year, the festival remains the only one-on-one intimate performance festival of its kind in Australia. Held for the first time at FAC, Proximity will take over 12 spaces throughout the evocative heritage building and grounds where you’re invited to encounter a series of intimate 10 minute performances. Breathe air from different ages on Earth, cut loose in a 60 second twerk, climb rooftops in search of love, sit behind the wheel with a learner driver and discover what memory tastes like. Proximity Festival is a nine day feast of intimate performances, masterclasses, discussions and celebrations. Schedule some alone time with Proximity – it’s been built with one very important person in mind. You! Proximity Festival is co-presented by Fremantle Arts Centre. Co-founded by James Berlyn, Sarah Rowbottam and Kelli Mccluskey.

book launch akio makigawa: sculptor Sat 11 Oct | 3–5PM (FORMALITIES 4PM) FREE entry | RSVP to RSVP@FREMANTLE.WA.GOV.AU Opened by Janet Holmes à Court Acclaimed Australian sculptor Akio Makigawa had a significant relationship with Fremantle Arts Centre, exhibiting here in the early stages of his career and gifting numerous works to the City of Fremantle Art Collection. Thirty-five years since his first FAC exhibition, we are proud to host the launch of his posthumous monograph Akio Makigawa: Sculptor. It is rare for a monograph about an Australian artist to be so lavishly and lovingly prepared as Makigawa’s masterful book. In making it, the artist had a simple objective: to tell his story as a sculptor and to explain his work. He engaged friends to collaborate with him: editors Jackie Cooper and Haig Beck, graphic designer Garry Emery and photographer John Gollings. Makigawa saw the finished text before he died in December 1999, but it took fourteen years before this magnificent book was finally realised, with Carlier Makigawa taking charge of its publication. The book is Akio’s beautiful legacy.

we don't need a map national tour
a martu experience of the western desert Following on from its critically acclaimed run at Fremantle Arts Centre in 2013, landmark exhibition We don’t need a map: a Martu experience of the Western Desert will now bring the spirit of the Western Desert to arts centres right throughout regional Australia. The exhibition will tour to six regional arts centres and galleries over the next two years through the partnership of Fremantle Arts Centre, Martumili Artists and Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa and the substantial support of BHP Billiton, the Australia Council, the WA Department of Culture and the Arts and Lotterywest.
Celebrating the distinct visual language of the Martu, the traditional owners of a vast area of Western Australia’s Western Desert, this multi-faceted exhibition explores the Martu’s deeply embedded understanding and layered interpretations of the land. Far more than just a static collection of Martu art, We don’t need a map invites audiences to actively engage with Martu culture, Martu people, their way of life and the way they care for country and belong to it. artists in residence Did you know that at any one time there are nine local and visiting artists in residence at FAC and the Moores Building developing their practice or making works for exhibition at FAC and other galleries? Many of the studios are open so feel free to pop in and meet the artists.
Rozalind Drummond (VIC) Working with photography, installation, performance, 1960s counter-culture and video, Drummond's project explores the proposition of fake or ersatz sites, nameless gatherings inhabited by groups of people where a location is ambiguous and unidentifiable. Studio 1 Matthew Saxon & Emanuela Marenz (UK) The duo will be in residence at FAC from 22–28 December as part of a three-month roving residency throughout South East Asia and Oceania. Using field recordings and participatory photography they seek to collaborate with local artists and communities to swap skills and share experiences. If you are interested in participating in their residency contact Bevan Honey. Studio 1 Jacqui Monks (WA) Using the idea of parallel worlds as an analogy for the interior self, Monks will experiment with hand-drawn rotoscoping over video to build a sense of ‘otherness’. Studio 3 Jarrad Martyn (WA) Martyn will work on a series of paintings that use found media imagery, specifically examples that are marked by a sense of dread in the immediate aftermath of a life-affirming act, as a starting point. Studio 5
Kath Fries (NSW) The impermanence of present experience and the fragility of life is traced in Fries’ practice. The artist will work with natural and found materials to explore tactility and nuance, and ideas of mortality and nature. Studio 6 Jacobus Capone (WA) Capone’s ongoing project Dark Learning sees the artist trying to extinguish all thought and instead placing faith in sensation. His previous work has involved unpicking and arranging the individual strands of a hay stack, spending 24 hours trapped in a large metal drum in a gallery space and walking from Perth to Wollongong to empty a vessel of Indian Ocean water into the Pacific. Studio 7 Renae Coles and Anna Dunnill (WA) Coles and Dunnill, collectively known as Snapcat, have set out on learning a huge variety of new skills in areas as diverse as survival training, crochet, drumming and the construction of ancient vessels known as coracles. Part of the duos work will be presented as part of Horizon: Exploring the West Coast with The Clipperton Project (p2). Studio 8 Sebastian Befumo (WA) Sculpture, drawing and video will become the vehicles Befumo engages to reconsider his experience and work during a recent three-month residency in La Plata, Buenos Aires. Studio 9

Alana McVeigh (WA) Through the medium of clay, local ceramicist McVeigh will conduct a comparative assessment and documentation of tacit learning and experiential knowledge development that occurs during Artist in Residence Programs. Ceramics studio Kirsten Sivyer (WA) Working directly from the streets of Fremantle, Sivyer will be developing a new series of images based on heritage buildings using a combination of painting, photography, drawing and projection. For more about the project visit www.kirstensivyer.com The current Moores Studio artists are Teelah George (WA) in Studio 1, and Rebecca Bauman (WA) in Studio 2 For further enquiries about the FAC AIR program or Moores Studio program, contact Bevan Honey, bevanh@fremantle.wa.gov.au

Kirsty Sadler (WA) WA-based artist Sadler is fascinated by images created from light and develops her own camera obscura to reveal beauty and intricacy in scenes that are not apparent to the human eye. The camera obscura is a forerunner of the modern camera and uses a darkened room or box fitted with a lens to projects an image onto a flat surface. “You find the beauty, rather than looking at something that’s already intrinsically beautiful...," she says. "If I can throw a rag on the floor and find beauty there then I’m discovering something.” Originally from a science background, Sadler returned to university in her early forties to undertake a Bachelor of Fine Arts and became fascinated with the optical device when researching the history of art. Her interest in camera obscura began with visiting one as a child in her hometown of Bristol. “Artists have used lenses since the 1500s or 1600s... but we’ve been trapping those images with photography for 150 years. Most people don’t see these images anymore, we’re so happy when we’ve captured them digitally or chemically with a photograph that we don’t see these pure light images and I find there’s a quality about them that you can’t get once they’re captured.” Kirsty has placed a few small camera obscura throughout FAC, offering visitors the chance to experience the childhood joy that these images hold for the artist.
