Acclaimed Icelandic visual artist Ragnar Kjartansson will take over the galleries, while two contemporary Finnish musicians Tuomo Prättälä and Felix Zenger present a one-off collaboration with Tilman Robinson in Soft Soft Loud 2015. FAC’s inaugural offBEAT is a mini festival celebrating the diverse world of percussion-driven music. US composer, John Luther Adams’ Inuksuit is a moody, atmospheric soundscape presented in the Front Garden at dusk by WAAPA’s acclaimed percussion ensemble Defying Gravity. FAC’s Learning Program continues to boom, satisfying people’s enthusiasm for enjoyable, well-taught art courses. Last term we enrolled more than 700 adults – a record for FAC – and 500 kids in our School Holiday Program. There is, as usual plenty to choose from. I trust we will see you soon at Fremantle Arts Centre.

In 2015 we feature lauded Finnish composer, singer and pianist Tuomo Prättälä, his beatboxing compatriot Felix Zenger, in-demand Australian composer Tilman Robinson and an ensemble of ten of WA’s finest instrumentalists in a world premiere performance. Collectively spanning fine classical virtuosity, lyrical pop, groove-based improvisation and synth-based electronica, this collaboration promises to yield unique and surprising results for artists and audiences alike. Tuomo Prättäla is known for producing music rooted strongly in 60s-70s soul and has recently drawn from the experimental electronic pop and RnB sounds of today, as well as 80s funk. Praised by the likes of Pharrell Williams, Felix Zenger goes way beyond the common conceptions of the beat box as an art form. Tilman Robinson, a WAAPA graduate, is now considered one of Australia’s most exciting young composers. Like the Northern Lights of their homeland, Prättälä and Zenger will bring together a mysterious and impressive combination of elements in what promises to be another unforgettable post-classical event.

FRI 20 MAR – SUN 22 MAR | FRONT GARDEN & inner courtyard From an immersive percussion soundscape, to a gig that merges rhythm and electronica, the offBEAT Festival explores the diversity of rhythm and percussion-driven music across three compelling performances. Inuksuit by John Luther Adams, the celebrated American composer, is a mass percussion soundscape about wilderness and nature that invites the audience to roam among the dispersed musicians. Inuksuit, the word for stone markers that guide the Inuit across the Arctic tundra, has been described by The New Yorker as a “sonic and scenic glory almost beyond description”. Presented at sunset in the Front Garden, Inuksuit will be a unique, moody sonic experience. Defying Gravity, WAAPA’s award-winning percussion ensemble led by director Tim White, will perform this new American classic. Live percussion and electronica combine for Saturday’s show. The Wheel Turns, a four-piece percussion ensemble led by Perth composer and percussionist Josh Hogan, will drive the live sound throughout the gig and showcase the work of three leading independent electronic solo performers. Watch fac.org.au and Facebook for announcements. Daniel Susnjar, acclaimed WA jazz drummer combines jazz with Peruvian rhythms, melodies and inspirations in his critically acclaimed debut album Su Sue Nje. Recently returned after several years studying and performing in the US, Daniel Susnjar Afro-Peruvian Jazz Group present a fresh, bright new sound. artists in residence Did you know that at any one time there are eleven local and visiting artists in residence at FAC and the Moores Building, experimenting and developing their practice? Many of the studios are open so you can pop in, meet the artists and get a sneak peek of their work. Shannon Williamson (NZ) returns to FAC following an artist residency in the Arctic Circle. Drawing inspiration from the icy polar nights, she will produce a series of multi-media drawings. Studio 1
Steven Aaron Hughes (WA) will develop interactive visual artwork, utilising projected light and sound, for the 2015 Emergence Festival in Margaret River. Studio 6
Hannah Purvey-Tyrer (UK), with a background in new media, performance and installation, will explore the architecture of FAC as a place of interaction and cultural production. Studio 2
Antonia Radich (NSW) will use photography, film and smartphone applications to map walks and daily travels between and around the Fremantle Port and the Fremantle War Memorial to create narratives of movement between places. Studio 6
Jacqui Monks (WA) will investigate the possibilities of the human consciousness, drawing over printed frames of video to create ‘parallel worlds’ – simultaneously working with instruments of the present and the past. Studio 3 Aaron Prior (WA) Print media and printmaking are the oldest forms of information dissemination. Prior will explore print media as a bridge between fine art and popular culture, focusing on how art and craft are defined within popular culture. Studio 4 Jarrad Martyn (WA) will produce a series of paintings, drawing inspiration from media images in an attempt to expand our understanding of the multitude of images we are exposed to daily. Studio 5 Karen Dickson (WA) will use a range of ‘low-brow’ media such as cardboard, liquid paper, tape, textas, plywood and found objects to develop drawings and objects in response to her work in the mental health sector. Studio 6
Jacobus Capone (WA) will attempt to create work in a vacuum. Avoiding all external influences he will aim to make art that is purely instinctual. Studio 7 Renae Coles and Anna Dunnill (WA), collectively known as Snapcat, continue their FAC Residency. The duo are developing projects using materials and processes common to both of their practice – sculpture, drawing and performance. Studio 8 Jessica Wilkes (WA) is interested in the objects that we surround ourselves with and will work with discarded objects, reconstructing them to reflect upon imagined pasts and future possibilities. Studio 8 Oliver Stretton-Pow (NZ) will explore the nature of bureaucracy, in particular the implicit and hidden workings of the beast, through reconstructing found objects. Studio 9
visual art | artists in residence | 17
Ben Crappsley (WA) will attempt to recreate the cinematic experience in his large-scale drawings and mixed-media works using aerosol, acrylic, oil pastel and charcoal. Studio 9 Monika Lukowska (POL) is investigating cultural identity in the era of globalization and will document her environment through photography, video and found imagery, manipulating these to create cultural studies and ethnographic images of Fremantle. Room 4 Clyde McGill (VIC) will explore modern narratives of ‘the contemporary patriot’ through drawing, painting and video performance works. Room 4 Holly O’Meehan (WA) Continuing her processdriven investigation of organising and arranging, O’Meehan is attempting to gain order and control of objects and images in response to FAC as a used and disused space. Roving FAC Alana McVeigh (WA) Through the medium of clay, McVeigh will deconstruct the ‘vessel’ – a typical object in ceramics – to create new and unusual forms. The vessel acts as an analogy for her research into the processes of learning and development, using her residency as a starting point. Ceramics Studio The current Moores Studio artists are Teelah George (WA) in Studio 1 and Rebecca Baumann (WA) in Studio 2.
FAC Welcomes 2015 Asialink Exchange Artist in Residence Yen-Ting Hsu (Taiwan) Hsu investigates the connection between sound, life, the environment and ethnoculture. Sound is at the core of her practice as she reflects on the multitude of perspectives available in a contemporary world. During this residency, Hsu will develop her research project, creating a ‘sound novel’. Based on personal narration and imagination, Hsu invites participants from the public into her studio to contribute sounds that may be included in the final work. If you are interested in participating please contact Bevan Honey, Artist in Residence Coordinator bevanh@fremantle.wa.gov.au STUDIO 1: Feb-May 2015
Applications for Moores Studio residencies will be open from 1-31 January, commencing March/ April 2015 and from 1-30 June, commencing August 2015. See fac.org.au for details.
