director’s welcome 2015 marks a significant milestone for the Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award, now in its 40th year. The award, the richest and most prestigious of its kind in Australia, has always showcased the best of printmaking in this country. This year’s award and exhibition are no exception. We will also look back in Multiple Choices: 40 Years of the FAC Print Award. Featuring every winner in the award’s history, this exhibition traces the evolution of the art form over four decades. Returning for the third year, Gallery Sessions has its strongest line up yet. These intimate, unplugged gigs are performed in our main gallery. With first-rate acoustics, a small audience and the talent of Abbe May, Mathas, Steve Parkin, Davey Craddock, Dom Mariani and Felicity Groom, these shows are not to be missed. Our Learning Program continues to grow with the addition of great new courses. The work of our students will be on display in the annual FAC Student Exhibition at the Moores Building, opening Friday 4 September. These are just a few of the fantastic exhibitions and events at FAC in the coming months. We hope to see you soon. Jim Cathcart Director, Fremantle Arts Centre

WA artist Alistair Rowe completed a residency in Delhi in 2014, spending eight weeks in Chandni Chowk, one of the city’s oldest, biggest and busiest bazaars. Inspired by the market’s sprawling network of narrow laneways and heritage as part of the 17th century Mughal capital, Rowe has created a series of sculptural works which beautifully combine the bazaar’s improvised and informal building methods with the refined and complex geometries for which Mughal architecture is famous.

bahalana:
journey of an empty cup fiona gavino Opening Fri 31 July | 6:30pm | Free Exhibition runs Sat 1 Aug – Sun 20 Sept Image: Fertility (detail), 2014, wicker, packing strapping
Fiona Gavino (WA) uses basket weaving techniques to create sculptural installations in Bahalana: Journey of an Empty Cup. The large-scale forms are woven by the artist from fibres commonly found in the Philippines, using traditional Filipino techniques of twining, plaiting and rattan furniture making. Exploring post-colonial identity is at the heart of Gavino’s practice. Embarking on an Asialink Residency in Manila in 2014, Gavino was intrigued to see how identity in the Philippines had evolved after more than 300 years of colonial occupation by Spain and later the United States. By engaging with the country’s material cultural traditions of basket weaving, Gavino discovered a universal language, connecting with locals through her work. The exhibition also features a video work made in collaboration with BM Lab, Manila, in which the artist traces the roots of her own ancestry. These works were first exhibited at Pan Project Space run by 98B COLLABoratory, an artist-run-initiative in Manila.

contemporary poetic photography Open until Sun 26 July | Free Curated by Susan Hill, quiet moments features the work of some of the premier photographic artists from the UK, Europe and Australia. Their imagery depicts strange scenes, peculiar figures and random objects from everyday life combined in unexpected ways. Rich in colour, hidden meaning and metaphor, viewers are invited to contemplate the images and project their own day dreams into the scenes. Poetic photography is distinctive for cutting juxtaposition and languid beauty, offering many possible meanings in stark contrast to the majority of imagery saturating today’s media.

artists in residence With 11 studios and a residential apartment, FAC's Artists in Residence program attracts local, national and international artists who are experimenting and developing their practice. Many of the FAC studios are open to the public so you can pop in and meet the artists.
Lorraine Biggs (TAS) will imagine the pasts of Fremantle and Rottnest Island lighthouse keepers using material collected from the sites and research she accumulated during an earlier phase of her residency in 2014. Studio 1 Rebecca Baumann (WA) will create a new multichannel installation using flip-dot displays. Baumann will explore the use of choreography within her practice, using images, patterns, and text to create a ‘chromatic narrative’. Studio 1 Sally Bower and Rose Megirian (WA) are multidisciplinary artists collaborating as Happy Yes. They will engage with the public to develop artworks, prints, fabrics and garments, reflecting on the way that an individual’s presentation, through the clothes they wear, determines how they are understood. Follow @WeAreHappyYes on Instagram for updates. Studio 2 Carly Lynch (WA) will explore how local archives can be both the material and impetus for new drawing, sculpture, performance and installation works. Lynch is one of two recent graduates to receive the FAC Print Award Residency. studio 3
Lee Bethel (NSW) is a paper artist whose work involves cutting and manipulating paper in a manner that utilizes shadow and reflection to create complex patterns and peripheral lightscapes. Studio 3 Matt McAlpine (WA) will continue to develop and explore ideas of colonial history, materiality and the Australian landscape. McAlpine is one of two recent graduates to receive the FAC Print Award Residency. Studio 4 Antonia Radich (NSW) will use photography, film and smartphone applications to map walks and daily movements around Fremantle to create narratives of movement between places. Studio 6 Tom Blake (WA) will explore human connection through technology, collating video and photographic information gathered whilst living alone for three months aboard a sailboat in Botany Bay. Studio 7 Jessica Wilkes (WA) is interested in the objects that we surround ourselves with and will work with discarded objects, deconstructing then reconstructing them to reflect upon imagined pasts and future possibilities. Studio 8
Debbie Harding (UK) exhibited in WA for the first time at Sculpture by the Sea, Cottelsoe in 2014. During this return visit she is making new artwork responding to the symbolic themes of 'light and dark' using various materials including glass, photographs, paper, wire, rope and natural materials. Studio 8 Ben Crappsley (WA) will investigate drawing as a tactile activity, using aerosols, acrylics, oil pastels and charcoal. Studio 9 Andrew Sunly Smith (UK/NSW) joins FAC for a production residency to develop a new series of sculpted forms, films and drawings. Studio 9 Clyde McGill (VIC) will explore modern narratives of 'the contemporary patriot' through drawing, painting and video performance works. Room 4 Hiroshi Kobayashi (JPN) will investigate ideas about symbolic systems within an Australian context, working with monochromatic acrylic painting of dolls. Room 4 Shannon Tovey (USA) will investigate the relationship between an object’s intended practical function and the way it is ultimately adopted by users. She will create her own objects and track their usage throughout different social interactions. Ceramics studio
Steven James Finch (WA) will be living in the grounds of FAC in a nomadic structure that he has built himself, hosting salon-style dinners that are open to the public and spontaneously collaborating with other artists in residence. The artist aims to develop an integrated artistic and life practice that embraces ecological ethics, relational aesthetics and open hospitality and is part of a year-long nomadic project that will see Finch moving into a new Perth backyard each month.
