director’s welcome Fremantle Arts Centre is proud to present Rebecca Baumann’s new solo exhibition Manoeuvres (p2). Having been long-term supporters of Rebecca’s work and watched her profile rightfully rise around the country and overseas, we’re delighted to mark this important moment in her career with a substantial exhibition of new and recent work. Contemporary dance finds a new home at FAC with two bold productions – Shanghai Bolero (p10) and In Short – In Situ (p11). Shanghai Bolero is a much-praised piece by French choreographer Didier Theron, performed by LINK Dance Company; and In Short – In Situ sees five emerging WA choreographers create new site-specific works in response to FAC’s unique architecture and grounds. Add to this the return of Sunday Music (p14), Little Big Shots kids’ film festival (p7), Sonic Sessions (p13), Bazaar (p45), plus many more favourites and we know you’ll have plenty of reasons to visit FAC.
We look forward to seeing you soon.

Opening FRI 20 nOv | 6:30pm | Free exhibitiOn runS SAT 21 nOv – Sun 24 Jan 2016 Rebecca Baumann (WA) is a highly-regarded interdisciplinary artist working predominantly in sculpture and installation. Having exhibited around the country in recent years and with a burgeoning reputation overseas, FAC presents the solo exhibition Manoeuvres at an important moment in her career. Baumann’s work is characterised by its distinctive use of colour, light and time. Involving an element of activation, the visibility of colour is in constant flux, referencing the innate change of our emotional selves and the greater world. In Manoeuvres, Baumann presents a series of spatial interventions throughout FAC’s galleries and hallways. Utilising industrial signage and information mechanisms, the works reflect Baumann’s interest in the language of materials. Through the use of programming, Baumann will choreograph these objects to create an immersive experience of colour and movement.

Opening FRI 20 nOv | 6:30pm | Free exhibitiOn runS SAT 21 nOv – Sun 24 Jan 2016 Didactic Tools features five artists responding to the current explosion of instructional and educational culture, from YouTube tutorials and TEDx to the proliferation of data visualization, analytics, digital whistleblowing and new political movements. The multidisciplinary ensemble bring together performance, visual art, sound and media works with biological science and architectural practice. Through collective research, sharing tools and conducting experiments in peer-to-peer education, the artists have drawn lines between the vast sub-cultures in which digital teaching and learning now thrive. Didactic Tools simultaneously embraces the challenges of knowledgesharing in art production while exploring the implications of openly divulging a work’s ‘source code’ – its information, intention, meaning or provocation – on its evocative ability. This project has been convened by Perth-based company Hydra Poesis and organised by artists Kynan Tan and Sam Fox. www.didactictools.net

shanghai bolero Wed 21 – Sat 24 Oct | Doors 6:30pm | Show 7:30pm | Front Garden Tickets $29.60; conc. & friends of waapa $24.50 from fac.org.au Built around Maurice Ravel’s iconic orchestral piece Bolero, this captivating contemporary dance piece uses repetition and duration to explore ideas of sensuality. Comprised of three interpretations of the same score, the three male and ten female performers are initially separated before coming together in the third section. It’s in these final stages that choreographer Didier Theron uses stillness to convey the anxiety that desire and perceptions of the human form provoke. After so much movement the group’s stillness is jarring, dramatic and powerful. The program opens with a new short work by LINK Artistic Director Michael Whaites, showcasing the skills of the LINK Dancers to the smooth sounds of Michael Buble. Choreographed by Didier Theron & Michael Whaites Performed by LINK Dance Company Note: This performance features partial nudity and may not be suitable for children.
