director’s welcome Revealed, a Western Australian State Government program dedicated to new and emerging WA Aboriginal artists, finds a new home at FAC this year. Bringing together Aboriginal art centres from all over the state to participate in an art market, workshops, professional development, public symposium and exhibition, Revealed celebrates the vitality and breadth of contemporary WA Aboriginal art and provides invaluable support to ensure the sector thrives in the future. Opening a week earlier, Frontier Surfing examines WA’s special relationship to big wave surfing, and together with Revealed superbly demonstrates FAC’s commitment to a program that reflects the diversity of contemporary WA life. This quarter we also welcome Sophie Kitson, the next participant in our Curators Exchange Program with NSW. This simple effective program, funded by the Australia Council, aims to grow the eastern state’s awareness of WA artists so that they may be included in other national and eastern states projects. In this simple way FAC is helping to address the enduring challenge of the remoteness of WA from the perceived centres of “the national conversation”.

Opening fri 1 april | 6:30pm | Free Exhibition Runs Sat 2 april – sun 22 May Focusing on the intense relationship between the wave, the board and the rider, Frontier Surfing follows some of the big waves off WA’s south west and the characters that chase them. Frontier Surfing tracks WA’s early surfing history, featuring work by legendary surf photographer John Witzig and a series of historically significant boards designed to withstand the force of the ocean’s most colossal waves. Showcased alongside large-scale images of WA’s most infamous breaks by big wave photographers Jamie Scott and Russell Ord, interviews with the surfers who ride them and seminal footage of surfers in action, this immersive exhibition explores the singular spiritual connection between the surfer and the wave. Revealed is an annual program that provides rare public exposure to new and emerging Aboriginal artists from all over the state, and is presented at FAC for the first time. Revealed comprises an art market, exhibition and symposium and features artists from more than 20 WA Aboriginal art centres, many in very remote locations. The exhibition showcases the diversity of the best new and emerging WA Aboriginal artists while the art market also includes work from established artists. Both are an opportunity for the public to purchase directly from these Aboriginal-owned art centres. The program also provides art workshops and professional development sessions at FAC for the artists and art centre staff. Revealed is an initiative of the WA State Government through the Department of Culture and the Arts; and the Australian Government through the Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support program.

The City of Fremantle Art Collection, established in 1958, is the largest municipal collection in WA with over 1400 works. The Collection’s focus on Fremantle artists and Australian prints celebrates the enduring importance of the visual arts to Fremantle.
Portraiture is perhaps the most poignant attempt in art to deny mortality. Face Value presents a selection of images drawn from the City of Fremantle’s Collection which reveal the mysterious power of the portrait. Beyond the superficial account of likeness, this exhibition contrasts idealised formal portraits with a range of naturalistic, satirical and psychological studies of character. Many are honest, uncompromising investigations of personality while other works harness this pervasive genre as a foundation for creative experiments and parody. Artists include Jazmina Cininas, Bob Birch, Robert Dorizzi, George Haynes, Mary Moore, Kathleen O’Connor and Guy Grey-Smith. Image: Michael Kempson & Matthew Tome, The Right Hon. J.W. the dog’s artist susan flavell Respected local artist Susan Flavell (WA) presents a series of video portraits and ceramic sculptures investigating our relationships with dogs. Flavell exhibited at FAC ten years ago in a very successful solo exhibition of epic-scale human cardboard sculptures. This new exhibition intersects her life as a dog trainer and brings intense scrutiny to reading dogs’ facial features, expressions and moods. These animal portraits will look at the human-centred history of the gaze in portraiture. “When Gypsy lies on her mat in the kitchen resting her head on her paws, and we are at the table, eating or talking, I sometimes wonder what goes on inside her head. Why do I wonder? Because, I think, we are struck by the mystery of animals, their otherness to us and to our lives.” Raymond Gaita – The Philosopher’s Dog
freakmo kiana jones Working under the name Freakmo, local artist Kiana Jones (WA) runs one of Australia's most popular special effects makeup YouTube channels. Her work is world renowned and she is now being sought by feature filmmakers. In this, her first solo show, Jones will present a series of large-scale fantasy photos and video portraits, developed through hours of labour intensive make up sessions. Jones’ techniques jolt the senses in their realistic interpretation of flesh and wounds. Images from left: Susan Flavell, The Artist's Dog, 2016, photographer Gail Russell. memory wayan upadana Having previously exhibited and been in residence at FAC, Indonesian artist Wayan Upadana returns with a new series of works based on the experience of being a tourist in WA as a counterpoint to FAC’s 2014 exhibition BALI: return economy. The drawings, watercolours, video and sculpture works reveal Upadana’s critical eye and are imbued with his intelligent wit. FAC and Wayan Upadana would like to thank and acknowledge the support of Mary Hill in the development of this project, which has followed on from the work of the late Chris Hill, co-curator of BALI: return economy, and his research into Balinese art and the subsequent inclusion of Wayan Upadana in that exhibition.

CURATORS EXCHANGE FAC is pleased to introduce Sophie Kitson, the second participant in our Curators Exchange Program. Three WA curators will travel to NSW while two curators from NSW visit WA with the long term aim of developing exhibitions and projects with artists from both states. Hosted by FAC and Firstdraft Gallery (NSW), the Curators Exchange Program is supported by Australia Council for the Arts, the Australian Government's arts funding and advisory body. Sophie Kitson (NSW) is an emerging curator who aims to mix her interests of failure, performance and post-internet art with various curatorial, design and publishing projects such as her small self-publishing label NSFW.
Lorraine Biggs (TAS) returns to FAC for the final stage of her research residency, delving into the early history of the lighthouses at Arthur Head, Fremantle and Rottnest Island. She will create drawings and painted found artefacts. Studio 1 Hannah Farleigh (WA) experiments with largescale mark making through painting and drawing. Farleigh will investigate conventions of pleasure by embracing the often overlooked experiences of silence and stillness. Studio 2 Greg Barr (WA) takes cues from his family, his Nyoongar Ballardong heritage, WA fauna and the Fremantle Dockers to develop a new series of mixed-media works ahead of his solo exhibition at the Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery in 2017. Studio 3 Emma Schrader (WA) draws on the material history of the FAC building and its inhabitants to create new sculptural works from wax, plaster, clay and fabric. Studio 4 Addam (WA) explores notions of light, shadow, cultural connectivity and harmony to produce sculptures that range in scale from the wearable to the architectural. Addam will create a series of encompassing, experiential installations throughout her studio. Room 4 Hiroshi Kobayashi (JPN) continues his ongoing exploration of symbols and systems, working monochromatically with acrylic on canvas to paint dolls in unexpected combinations with indigenous insects and landscapes. Studio 5 Emily Hornum (WA) works across photography, new media and installation. She is investigating family archives and memory to create immersive installations that blur the boundaries between old and new media. Studio 6 Sarah Elson (WA) is developing a new body of work using found, ephemeral organic matter to explore notions of intimacy and value through sculpture, installation and wearable forms. Studio 7 Images from top: Lorraine Biggs, Osprey on Nest, 2015, oil on cigar box lid, approx. 15 x 15cm. Liu YaoChung, Mecury 7, 2015, acrylic on canvas, 120 x 120cm. Peter Burgess (NSW) is carrying out studio research, working with archives from Fremantle’s Military and Maritime Museums to learn more about Fremantle during World War II. Studio 7 Sophie Durand (WA) is an inter-disciplinary artist who will develop an approach to the appropriation of found objects and texts into different forms. In parallel, she will explore the ways in which performances and time-based works can be presented. Studio 8 Andrew Sunley Smith (WA) is developing a series of sculpted forms, films and drawings created and formed through constant velocity. Studio 9 Tessa Beale (WA) will create new transitional works across the media of metal, print and drawing, exploring ideas of transformation. North Wing Iain Dean (WA) will produce a new body of work concerned with the potential of the artist’s hands in an age where industrial production and digital imagery far outpace the production capabilities of any individual. Ceramics studio The current Moores Studio artists are Clyde McGill (WA) and Kathy Allam (WA). For further enquiries about the FAC AIR program or Moores Studio program contact Bevan Honey bevanh@fremantle.wa.gov.au
In partnership with Asialink, FAC is pleased to introduce the 2016 Taipei reciprocal exchange artist Liu YaoChung (Taiwan). YaoChung explores how language and images interact. His practice engages with contemporary popular culture, juxtaposing popular and historical themes to create new readings of familiar objects. YaoChung will respond to and delve into Australian culture during his three-month residency. Studio 1
