director’s welcome FAC is delighted to present the Australian premiere of Matthew Ngui’s work, Every Point of View, opening in late July. One of five major works commissioned by the Singapore Art Museum to celebrate 50 years of the state’s independence, Ngui is looking forward to bringing the work to Fremantle, the other city he calls home. Opening on the heels of the federal election, the themes of democracy explored in the show are certainly timely. The annual Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award supported by Little Creatures Brewing is always a highlight on the FAC calendar. Join us on Thursday 22 September to find out who has taken out the coveted $16,000 First Prize for 2016. Alongside the Award past winner Gosia Wlodarczak will carry out a three-week endurance performance in A Room Without a View (Extended). Wlodarczak will draw directly onto the walls of the gallery, closeted and isolated. You can observe her progress and then see the final completed work. The City of Fremantle Art Collection exhibition Many Happy Landings will also show a selection of her works. We look forward to welcoming you to FAC soon. matthew ngui every point of view Opening Fri 29 July | 6:30pm | Free | Runs Sat 30 July – Sat 17 Sept In this Australian premiere, FAC presents Matthew Ngui’s Every Point of View. This large-scale installation is one of five major works commissioned by Singapore Art Museum to mark 50 years of the nation's independence. Based between Fremantle and Singapore, Ngui is a significant international artist whose multi-disciplinary practice investigates perception through sculpture, photography and performance. Democracy is one of five core national values represented by the stars on the Flag of Singapore. For Every Point of View, Ngui solicited ten statements about democracy from a cross-section of Singaporeans. Their words form part of the resulting installation, written across a forest of PVC pipes placed throughout the galleries. Moving through, fragments of each statement can be glimpsed fleetingly but it is only at specific angles that the text can be read in full. For Ngui, acknowledging and understanding the multitude of viewpoints in society and allowing them to co-exist is one of democracy’s key underpinnings. Showing alongside, and for the first time in WA since 2008, is Swimming; at least 8 points of view. This 15 metre wide projection, which follows the artist swimming up and down a pool, will fill the main gallery. Ngui has exhibited extensively around the world, participating in major biennales including Documenta (Germany) and the Biennales of Sao Paulo (Brazil), Venice (Italy) and Gwangju (South Korea). He was Artistic Director for Singapore Biennale 2011.

gosia wlodarczak a room without a view (extended) Gosia Wlodarczak, internationally renowned artist and 2014 FAC Print Award winner, will draw directly onto the walls of the Kathleen O’Connor Gallery in a three-week endurance performance from Friday 23 September to Sunday 16 October. Closeted and isolated inside the gallery, Wlodarczak will draw in a state of sensory deprivation. Viewers will be able to watch the artist’s progress via a screen outside the gallery. On Sunday 16 October, Wlodarczak will leave the room at 5pm and visitors will be invited inside to view the completed work. The installation will be open to the public the following day. Born in Poland, Wlodarczak arrived in Australia in 1996. She now lives in Melbourne and works in Australia and internationally. Drawing is the basis of her practice, extending towards performance, interactive situations, installation, sound, photography and movingcollage – a process she refers to as transdisciplinary drawing. Wlodarczak has held over 50 solo exhibitions and 38 performances in Australia and internationally including the recent Frost Drawings for MSK Ghent Museum of Fine Arts, Belgium and the National Museum in Szczecin, Poland. She was also included in the 5th Moscow Biennale and Singapore Biennale 2011.

fac print award forum | the print process Sat 24 Sept | 1–4pm | Main Gallery | free FAC’s annual Print Award Forum is an important industry opportunity to discuss contemporary printmaking and issues surrounding the medium. In 2016, the forum investigates the technical aspects of printmaking and delves into the works in this year’s FAC Print Award.

Speakers One of this year’s judges Dr Darren Jorgensen (WA), Discipline Chair, Art History & Senior Lecturer, School of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts, UWA, will give a tour of the exhibition from the judges’ perspective and provide a critical context for the works. Michael Kempson (NSW), Senior Lecturer, Convenor of Printmaking Studies, Director of Cicada Press, UNSW Art & Design, will unpick the techniques used in a selection of the 2016 works, and give an overview of the innovative Cicada Press program. Kempson founded Cicada Press, an educationally focused custom printing model at UNSW, to promote the broad methodological potential of printmaking practice. The winner of the 2016 Print Award will discuss their work in the exhibition and how it forms part of their broader practice.

exhibitions the dog’s artist susan flavell Respected local artist Susan Flavell (WA) presents a series of video portraits and ceramic sculptures that investigate our relationships with dogs. Drawing on her life as a dog trainer, Flavell questions the human-centred history of the gaze in portraiture to create works that bring an intense scrutiny to reading dogs’ facial features, expressions and moods.

freakmo kiana jones Working under the name Freakmo, Kiana Jones (WA) runs one of the country’s most popular special effects make up YouTube channels. In her first solo show, Jones has created a series of large-scale fantasy photos and video portraits developed through hours of labour intensive make up sessions. Jones’ techniques jolt the senses in their realistic interpretation of flesh and wounds.

closing 19 july memory wayan upadana Balinese artist Wayan Upadana returns with a new series of works based on the experience of being a tourist in WA as a counterpoint to FAC’s 2014 exhibition BALI: return economy. The drawings, watercolours, video and sculpture works reveal Upadana’s critical eye and are imbued with his intelligent wit. FAC and Wayan Upadana would like to thank and acknowledge the support of Mary Hill in the development of this project, which has followed on from the work of the late Chris Hill, co-curator of BALI: return economy, and his research into Balinese art and the subsequent inclusion of Upadana in that exhibition.

face value Face Value presents a selection of images drawn from the City’s Collection which reveal the mysterious power of the portrait. Beyond the superficial account of likeness, this exhibition contrasts idealised formal portraits with a range of naturalistic, satirical and psychological studies of character. Artists include Jazmina Cininas, Mary Moore, Kathleen O’Connor, Brad Rimmer and Miriam Stannage.

12 | visual art | artists in residence

artists in residence With 11 studios and a residential apartment, FAC’s Artist in Residence Program attracts local, national and international artists who are developing their practice or making new work for exhibition.

Lesley Duxbury (VIC) will continue her investigation into the sky, using photography, video, drawing and printmaking. By using apps such as Night Sky and other means of observation, Duxbury will explore the sky’s ability to conceal and reveal constellations, planets and artificial satellites. Studio 1 Manabu Kanai (JPN) will attempt to develop an independent art form by simultaneously working across and investigating the connections between several different mediums. Studio 1 Hannah Farleigh (WA) experiments with largescale mark making through painting and drawing. Farleigh will investigate conventions of pleasure by embracing the often overlooked experiences of silence and stillness. Studio 2 Greg Barr (WA) takes cues from his family, his Nyoongar Ballardong heritage, WA fauna and the Fremantle Dockers to develop a new series of

mixed-media works ahead of his solo exhibition at the Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery in 2017. Studio 3 Addam (WA) explores notions of light, shadow, cultural connectivity and harmony to produce sculptures that range in scale from the wearable to the architectural. Addam will create a series of encompassing, experiential installations throughout her studio. Room 4 Hiroshi Kobayashi (JPN) continues his ongoing exploration of symbols and systems, working monochromatically with acrylic on canvas to paint dolls in unexpected combinations with indigenous insects and landscapes. Studio 5 Emily Hornum (WA) works across photography, new media and installation, and is investigating family archives and memory to create immersive installations that blur the boundaries between old and new media. Studio 6

Den Scher (WA) explores the ethics of food production practices, water and fuel accessibility, and other issues confronting remote and rural Australians while researching and reconsidering the traditional book format and the boundaries of text as a visual communication medium. Studio 7 Peter Burgess (NSW) is carrying out studio research, working with archives from Fremantle’s Military and Maritime Museums to learn more about Fremantle during World War II. Studio 7 Sophie Durand (WA) is an inter-disciplinary artist who will develop an approach to the appropriation of found objects and texts into different forms. In parallel she will explore the ways in which performances and time-based works can be presented. Studio 8 Andrew Sunley Smith (WA) is developing a series of sculpted forms, films and drawings created and formed through constant velocity. Studio 9

Tessa Beale (WA) will create new transitional works across the media of metal, print and drawing, exploring ideas of transformation. North Wing Iain Dean (WA) will produce a new body of work concerned with the potential of the artist’s hands in an age where industrial production and digital imagery far outpace the production capabilities of any individual. the city of fremantle art collection presents frank norton The City of Fremantle Art Collection is preparing an expansive retrospective exhibition which casts an eye into the extraordinary life of Frank Norton (1916-1983). A significant figure in the WA art scene, Norton was the first official war artist for the Royal Australian Navy and went on to become the Director of the Art Gallery of WA for 18 years (1958-1976). An established painter and illustrator of maritime subjects, Norton was a pioneer for the arts and culture in WA, guiding the Gallery through a significant period of its history and vastly expanding its Collection. Frank Norton will showcase a series of this renowned artist’s paintings and drawings, along with wartime commissions and major commissions depicting Fremantle. The works will be drawn from the City’s Collection as well as private, corporate and institutional collections from around Australia.
