about fremantle arts centre One of Australia’s finest arts centres, FAC is housed within an iconic heritage building and beautiful grounds. Visit for free exhibitions, an expansive live music program, special events, art courses, a shop selling the finest WA-designed wares and an idyllic cafe. Free wifi. Open 7 days.

director’s welcome I would like to pay tribute to Ian Templeman, FAC Founding Director, 1972 to 1989, who sadly passed away in October after a long illness. Ian was a charismatic and important figure who articulated and then passionately made real FAC’s sense of purpose and ambition. Ian was responsible for setting up the core programs that still run today – the courses, free music, curated exhibition program of largely new work, the shop and the artists in residence program. Ian also led the creation of the Fremantle Arts Centre Press (now Fremantle Press), Fremantle Arts Review and the regional Arts Access Program. His legacy endures to this day. FAC is pleased to be partnering again with the Perth International Arts Festival in presenting stunning and provocative Australian artist Dani Marti’s first WA first solo exhibition (p2); and a once-only performance of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s masterpiece Blood on the Floor, for our 2016 Soft Soft Loud program (p6). offBEAT returns for its second year with a small series of percussion and rhythm-driven concerts in March (p8). These will be a real treat. I hope we see you soon at FAC.

black sun Opening Sat 6 Feb | 6:30pm | Free Exhibition Runs Sun 7 Feb – Mon 28 Mar

FAC hosts Dani Marti’s first WA solo show as part of the 2016 Perth International Arts Festival. Including a generous offering of new and never before shown hand-woven canvases, audio and video works, Black Sun is both seductive and confronting. Marti uniquely combines video and textiles to create portraits which reflect upon encounters with family, lovers and strangers. His works are intense in their scrutiny, alive in their passion and ask poignant questions about sexuality, intimacy, the efficacy of relationships, encounters and the need to share in others’ stories. Black Sun is a not to be missed opportunity to see the work of one of Australia’s most challenging and exciting contemporary artists.

WAAPA’s acclaimed percussion ensemble Defying Gravity and special guests present an enchanting night of music inspired by the sounds of India and the Middle East, performed outdoors under the stars. To close the show, all of the players will come together to perform the magical new work Karma, composed by Tao Issaro. Written specifically to be performed in this space and drawing on the musical influences of his homeland India, this unique work traverses a range of sounds and moods.
