director’s welcome Fremantle Arts Centre’s summer program superbly demonstrates FAC’s commitment to our many audiences, our local community and to artists with a program that is varied and high quality. We are pleased to be one of Fremantle Festival’s key venues and presenting 10 performances over 10 days as part of the excellent reinvigorated local festival. Our annual Sonic Session offers an intimate experience of the legendary Mick Harvey in conversation and performance with Lucky Oceans, meanwhile the hilarious contemporary Australian cabaret act, Die Roten Punkte, are presented in the Front Garden. Our Artist in Residency program continues to support local, interstate and international artists, with our current group including two artists from Japan and one from the USA. FAC is coordinating three trips with selected tutors to groups of remote WA Aboriginal Arts Centres as a follow up to Revealed, the state government’s annual program for new and emerging Aboriginal artists, which we presented in April this year. Our new courses program for little children Under 5 has been very successful and our new PC lab means we are now teaching digital art making, animation and photographic skills to larger class groups. Of course two FAC favourites, Sunday Music and our Christmas Bazaar return for another year. There is plenty to enjoy and I hope we see you numerous times at FAC this summer. Opening Fri 18 Nov | 6:30pm | Free Exhibition Runs Sat 19 Nov – Sun 22 Jan 2017 Light Geist celebrates the enveloping and entrancing power of video projection with fiery landscapes, glowing vats of mist and intricate projection mapping. Featuring new commissions by four leading Australian artists, Light Geist challenges the notion that video projection is a flat cinematic experience and explores the potential interplay between surface and projected image. Award-winning media artist Sohan Ariel Hayes (WA) and senior Martu artist Ngamaru Bidu (WA) will transform Bidu’s mesmerising paintings of the Martu’s fire burning regimes in the Western Desert into an absorbing three-dimensional painting. Her animated country will engulf viewers as it is projected onto the floor and walls of FAC’s Main Gallery, moving and blazing around them. In FAC’s darkened hallway, leading contemporary artist Ella Barclay (NSW) will project onto vapour rising from a suspended tank. These mysterious, ghostly works speak of spectral encounters and point to the ethereal nature of digital data and the alchemic transformation of ideas into matter. Perth-based musician and artist Sam Price, otherwise known as NAIK, will use projection to map an intricate and pulsing environment onto a foam structure filling Gallery 3. This glowing, digitised landscape is interrupted by data glitches and distortions, as Price’s installation wrestles with notions of human perception and memory in the age of continual digital augmentation and reproduction. This show has been curated by FAC’s Exhibitions and Special Projects Coordinator Erin Coates.

Opening Fri 18 Nov | 6:30pm | Free Exhibition Runs Sat 19 Nov – Sun 22 Jan 2017 The City of Fremantle Art Collection presents an expansive retrospective exhibition which casts an eye into the extraordinary life of Frank Norton (1916-1983). A significant figure in the WA art scene, Norton was the first Official War Artist for the Royal Australian Navy and went on to become the Director of the Art Gallery of WA for 18 years (1958-1976). Known as a painter of ships, Norton was a practical administrator not afraid of controversy. He worked tirelessly to herald a new era for the Art Gallery, establishing a collection of Aboriginal art and a new gallery as the centrepiece of the Perth Cultural Centre. Simultaneously he was forging a uniquely successful painting and design practice from his gallery office. Frank Norton: Painter and Collector will showcase examples of his renowned paintings, drawings and prints of maritime subjects, with a strong focus upon Fremantle. The works will be drawn from the City’s Collection as well as private, corporate and public collections from around Australia.
