director’s welcome Fremantle Arts Centre is proud to partner again with the Perth International Arts Festival in two projects. Before the Siren is a community participatory event at Fremantle Oval that celebrates the new women’s AFL and our exhibition SPAN features five WA artists. FAC is working with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for the first time to host the Perth workshop and heats of Deadly Funny, a program which discovers and supports new Aboriginal comedy talent across the country. This year’s offBEAT percussion program presents WAAPA’s popular Defying Gravity in concert, alongside Piñata Percussion’s intimate promenade performance through the studios and galleries. The two shows offer very different experiences of the vibrant world of contemporary percussion. There is as usual plenty to choose from. I trust we will see you soon at Fremantle Arts Centre. presented by fremantle arts centre & perth international arts festival Opening Fri 3 Feb | 6:30pm | Free | Exhibition Runs Sat 4 Feb – Sun 26 Mar In a world full of movement the space between two points is constantly being traversed. SPAN brings together five WA artists whose work reaches out – transitioning across margins which are personal and global, political and geographical – between self and others, artist and viewer. Comprising work from Susanna Castleden, Olga Cironis, Tanya Lee, Clyde McGill and Andrew Sunley Smith, SPAN traverses the connection and disconnection of boundaries while mapping the passage of the journey. A life-size print of a cruise ship gangway, a series of sculptured industrial engine parts, human hair woven on a loom, neighbours grooming each other over the fence and a musical performance based on asylum seekers – the works in SPAN link personal body space, encroach on the neighbours, and consider decisions of travel and where and how we live.
