director’s welcome A fortieth anniversary is a big milestone for any institution but rather than get too nostalgic or self-congratulatory we’re marking this occasion at Fremantle Arts Centre in a way that allows you – the community that has made FAC a creative hub for four decades – to celebrate. Everyone is invited to reflect by sharing artworks, objects, memories and experiences in Mad About You: 40 Years of Fremantle Arts Centre. Please visit our website to contribute. We’d love to hear from you. As always, from April to June our exhibition program will show a diverse range of work from leading local and inter-state artists, be they new graduates, mid-career or senior practitioners. Peter Dailey, the creator of the much-loved concrete couch in FAC’s grounds will return with an exhibition of “10” life-size figurative sculptures thanks to a partnership with community-based philanthropy group The Syndicate. Our Artists In Residence program is also welcoming a broad range of practitioners including a musician from Taipei and the multidisciplinary Clipperton Project. While we pause to enjoy and celebrate 40 years as an arts organisation, FAC continues to be restless, to grow, evolve and look to the future. Our shop, Found at FAC, continues to champion the works of more than 100 WA artists and makers and this term we will enrol more than 1000 students, adults and children, into our course program. I hope over the next few months that you will come and reflect on the last 40 years, enjoy who we are now and join with us in looking to the future. Jim Cathcart Director

about you 40 years of fremantle arts centre sat 13 april – sun 2 june opening fri 12 april | 6:30pm Mad About You is a big-hearted, public-led exhibition that celebrates Fremantle Arts Centre's role as a creative and community hub and reflects on the influence it has played in many people's lives. In March, FAC made a public call out for artworks, objects, photographs, personal recollections and multimedia that featured the Arts Centre throughout its forty year history or represented the affinity and connection many people have with the building. With a focus on how intrinsic the sense of place is to the way people experience FAC and its grounds, the gathered material has been cocurated by City Of Fremantle Art Collection curator Andre Lipscombe and FAC director Jim Cathcart to form the basis of Mad About You. While Mad About You includes work from the City’s Art Collection and other well-known artists, it also features the works and memories of the general public and FAC’s broad, enthusiastic community of visitors and students. By bringing together material as diverse as You Tube gig footage, the recollections of well-known Fremantle residents and new works by local school students, the exhibition is forward-looking and multi-faceted.

The project also extends online through a micro-site at www.fac.org.au where FAC-lovers are encouraged to post pictures, video and recollections of their fondest memories of FAC right throughout the exhibition. Mad About You will be launched in the Inner Courtyard on 12 April, with a gala party featuring Fremantle musicians and members of the FAC community past and present.

sat 13 april – sun 2 june opening fri 12 april | 6:30pm Creator of the much loved concrete couch in the grounds of FAC, renowned WA sculptor Peter Daileypresents an expansive exhibition of ten life-size figurative sculptures. Dailey's ten human figures will take up residence in FAC's main gallery which will be darkened and specially-lit for this evocative exhibition. In Apparition Dailey’s figures exists in physical landscapes - both internal and external - contemplating the cultural, economic, political and environmental mechanisms they are a part of. Ultimately the work asks the pivotal question; what does it mean to be human? For nearly three decades Dailey has played a significant role in Perth’s distinctive sculptural scene, exhibiting widely and creating a number of prominent public works. An artist, educator, curator and mentor, Dailey has participated in over 80 group exhibitions nationally and internationally including exhibitions in Hungary, Singapore and the Philippines. He was chosen by philanthropic group The Syndicate for this, their second project, which gives the artist a chance to work for two years on a commissioned series of works. The Syndicate is a philanthropic model initiated by South West WA collector Lloyd Horn where participating syndicate members commission an artist to make a body of work. This exhibition will be accompanied by a substantial monograph celebrating the project and Dailey’s career. Peter Dailey is represented by Turner Galleries, Perth.

sat 13 april – sun 2 june opening fri 12 april | 6:30pm In her first solo show in WA, Victorian artist Sally-Ann Rowland creates work that uses cliché phrases and popular truisms collected in popular culture - self help books, social media, crime novels, sports commentaries and women’s magazines. Responding to advertising, merchandising and the marketplace, Rowland incorporates the phrases into calendars, tea towels, pencils and mugs which will be installed in the gallery and also available to purchase online and at FOUND at FAC. Rowland was a recipient of the prestigious Anne & Gordon Samstag International Art Scholarship in 1999 and has exhibited widely in Australia and the US, including exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and most recently in Paris and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

michael bullock the trail of time: the sandalwood project sat 13 april – sun 2 june opening fri 12 april | 6:30pm Perth-born sculptor Michael Bullock returns to WA with sculpture triggered by a memory of the smell of sandalwood. Years ago the sculptor stood in a hot landscape in a wheatbelt town alongside a dead sandalwood tree which presented its unique, sweet perfumed smell, so redolent of the temples and markets of Asia. Sandalwood is indigenous to WA and was a significant export to Asia for making Joss sticks for Buddhist ceremonies. The Trail of Time weaves personal experiences of landscape, place and family with research into the history, trade and uses of sandalwood in WA. Bullock’s practice uses traditional sculptural processes; the formed, the modeled, the cast and the carved and is applied to different materials including paper, wood, metal, bronze, plaster and stone. Bullock has exhibited across Australia and throughout Asia including Vietnam and South Korea. Developed through FAC’s Artist in Residence Program, this project has also been supported by the Moora Fine Arts Society through a short term artistic residence and the Australian Government through the Australia Council.

helen maudsley the landscape of being sat 8 june – sun 21 july opening fri 7 june | 6:30pm The Landscape of Being brings the much lauded work of Victorian painter Helen Maudsley to FAC for her first solo show in WA. One of Australia’s most enduring artists, Maudsley has been painting for six decades and her unique psycho-aesthetic vision of the world has influenced many artists. Her work is concerned with the nature and language of painting and drawing, about the relevance of art in the community, and how we manage the cultural conflict between the popular and the serious. Maudsley has exhibited regularly since 1954, including in Cross Currents: Focus on Contemporary Australian Art at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney in 2007 (curated by the late John Stringer) and two major surveys of her own work in 2007 in Victoria. Helen Maudsley is represented by Niagara Galleries in Melbourne.

“In many ways Helen Maudsley has been ahead of her time, but there is every reason to give greater attention to this artist who coaxes us into remarkable visual journeys and teaches us to look ever more deeply,” SHERIDAN PALMER, ART AND AUSTRALIA.

michaela gleave a day is longer than a year Image: Michaela Gleave, research image, (detail), 2013, Image courtesy the artist and Anna Pappas Gallery, Melbourne.

sat 8 june – sun 21 july opening fri 7 june | 6:30pm Using natural phenomena and tricks of perception while engaging a keen sense of poetry, romance and adventure, NSW artist Michaela Gleave builds temporal atmospheric installations that disorientate our relationship to space, matter and time. Her works are often fleeting and have included an instalation where the viewer steps into shimmering, star-like mist (Our Frozen Moment) and covering the forecourt of Sydney's Museum of Contemporary Art with snow (Snowfield). Gleave is currently artist-in-residence with the CSIRO's Astronomy and Space Science Division and works across a range of media including installation, performance, photography and video. This project is based on a research residency at the CSIRO and marks Gleave's first solo exhibition in WA. The artist has had previous residencies in Berlin, Iceland, and Central Australia. Michaela Gleave is represented by Anna Pappas Gallery, Melbourne.

jacob ogden smith pottery three ways sat 8 june – sun 21 july opening fri 7 june | 6:30pm For emerging WA artist Jacob Ogden Smith, pottery is a cultural phenomenon that has traditionally explained much about the society it was made in. However, today pottery has been usurped as a purveyor of historical record in favour of mass media and potters have become less a central tenet of artefact making and more reclusive in their activities. In Pottery Three Ways this scenario is questioned with the work combining elements of utility, beauty and humour in the face of traditional pottery practices. His previous work (such as the pictured Hovea Pottery Ale which was shown at OK Gallery) has included Smith creating vessels to store his own home brew. In Pottery Three Ways, various mediums and techniques are employed in an attempt to reconcile a mass media view of pottery with its once physical and functional form. Traditional ceramic techniques will be used alongside 3D computer modelling, digital printing and laser scanning to create a series of objects that shift and blend, combining and confusing processes and materials. Jacob Ogden Smith is represented by OK Gallery, Northbridge.

tanya lee personal space Image: Personal Space, 2012, courtesy of the artist

sat 8 june – sun 21 july opening fri 7 june | 6:30pm In this her first solo show, Tanya Lee takes us on one of her adventures through “an ordinary life”. A parody of a picketed existence, Personal Space looks at walking a fine line between the idea of welcoming someone into your home while also fortifying against a vague and unidentified enemy. Lee’s practice is a combination of drawings, performance documentation, photographs and diagrams. Taking everyday tasks and altering them into exceedingly difficult and absurd escapades, Lee’s humorous and often futile narratives make visible the rules, protocols and politics that exist in the bunkers of suburbia. Lee grew up outside the small wheat-belt town of Wubin. She completed her BA in Fine Art at Curtin University in 2007 during which she spent a year at the Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Art de Dijon in France as an academic in residence. Lee completed a Masters of Fine Art at Curtin in 2009.

the clipperton project Image: The Clipperton Project, Museo Diego Rivera Anahaucalli. Photo by Edgardo Aguilar Cortes, 2013 Artwork by Alan Pfeiffer, 2013

The Clipperton Project (TCP) is an international initiative that uses notions of exploration, journey and discovery to inspire and empower members of the public to interact with diverse perspectives, peoples and disciplines. What started in 2011 as an expedition to Clipperton Island in the Pacific Ocean is now a multidisciplinary arts/science research project focusing on isolated locations. The Clipperton Project's Professional Development Workshop takes as a starting point the fact that the world that we inhabit is a limitless place of absolute fascination. They believe and argue that we are all stakeholders in every debate, and that the key attribute to skillmaking is not knowledge but willingness to risk and to step over the horizon, into other territories, other spaces, professions and new ways of free thinking - leaving aside ego, prejudice, localism.
