As a Maker or a Hacker, young people will have fun learning to ‘hack’ a solution to a problem or make a fun craft using odds-andends of common household objects, duct tape and other fun things. Have you seen the Rube Goldberg contraptions that make something happen? They have been in OK GO videos and girl science advertisements. Still not sure what it is? A Rube Goldberg apparatus is a deliberately over-engineered or overdone machine that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction. We are going to look at some basic machines and techniques (like an animal trap or a toaster) and figure a way to improve it. Everything will be safe and well thought out as we will engineer that into the solution. This is going to be some fun! Bring a lunch. AGE LOC DATE TIME 7-11 NLC Jul17-21 9:00AM-3:00PM

Java® Programming: Art, Games & Arduino

Ages 12-16 NEW

This camp teaches students Java programming in a fun, understandable, step-by-step way. We’ll use the Java-based Processing® language to construct interactive graphics, animations, and games. Students write code to produce graphics from the very first lesson, so they receive immediate visual feedback from the get-go. We’ll work through projects that cover the most important fundamentals of coding such as variables, functions, loops, conditionals, arrays, and basic object-oriented programming (OOP), including linked lists and inheritance. By week’s end, students have applied their knowledge to write code to make graphical games-including a space game and an arcade-style survival/endurance game. Students will also build digital devices and interactive objects with the popular circuit board Arduino and program them with Processing. They will learn about electronic input and output such as LEDs, speakers, and sensors.Processing is used at high schools and universities to teach the fundamentals of programming. Processing is built on Java, has almost the identical language syntax, but adds custom features related to graphics and interactivity. This makes Processing unique (and awesome) in that it allows users the chance to create games, art, and animations relatively quickly with code. BAR 253337

DAY FEE M-F $449

Ages 11-14

Learn to program with Python® by creating text-based games, such as number and logic games, interactive arcade-style games, interesting art and animations, and even a Pokemon-based game. You will learn how to construct text and images on the screen, prompt users for input, generate calculations, use variables and loops, and more!Python® is the perfect language for learning computer programming because it is easy to understand and widely used and valued. Many businesses use it-NASA and Google, for instance-and it often is the first language taught at many top universities. Getting comfortable with Python at an early age is a terrific foundation for future programming success.Throughout the week, students will use the most important constructs of the Python language, learning about variables, functions, conditional statements, loops, and lists. They will incorporate graphics into projects and finish with the breakthrough of making their own games, entirely with Python code. Each day, we will also team up and program the Sphero SPRK robotic ball to complete missions using the Lightning Lab coding app. No prior programming experience is required for the camp, but comfort and familiarity with typing is suggested. They will even get the chance to print out their artistic shots. A photography art exhibit will take place on the last day of class for family and friends. Students must have access to a functional digital camera. Nothing too fancy, but we recommend a point and shoot camera with some manual capability to maximize the photography experience. Instructor will make his best effort to monitor the careful use and safekeeping of all cameras, but some risk remains. Instructor Len Cook has over 25 years of experience.

Cooking Round the World is the juncture where cooking and cultural education embrace. We educate girls and boys about countries around the world and American states using cooking to celebrate diversity and embrace difference. We cook recipes, read folktales, teach language and geography, and learn to think critically about the foods we just cooked. We also play trivia games and play our version of the TV show ‘Chopped’ or bake desserts. The program is completely hands-on; everyone peels or chops or dices or minces. We believe in cooking with whole foods and having the children do the prep work themselves. Campers come away from a Cooking Round the World experience with respect for difference, a broadened pallet, and a desire to become a citizen of the world! Educational! Delicious! Fun!!
