Digital Content Hub Audiovisual | Digital Digital Innovation Precinct Tshimologong | Johannesburg The Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct is a cluster associated to the University of the Witwatersrand. A real "Silicon Valley" located in the heart of Johannesburg, the Tshimologong ecosystem is dedicated to the digital economy and innovation. Driven by common goals, including the desire to combine technology, innovation and creative content, Tshimologong and the French Institute of South Africa joined forces to create the Digital Content Hub (DCH), and integrate the existing Digital Lab Africa programme. Launched in July 2018, the DCH is a physical incubator of innovative audiovisual content (animation, virtual reality, web content, video games, animation, music...) supported by the Tshimologong Innovation Center in collaboration with key players in the cultural and creative industries in France. The DCH is the rst project of the creative industries sector in Africa to obtain nancing from the French Development Agency (AFD) since the extension of their mandate to include these industries. The project obtained a grant of 950 000 euros over 3 years. DCH is an incubator dedicated to the training, incubation and support of African companies and professionals in innovative audiovisual content. The aim is to foster links between the French market and the South African creative digital ecosystem. The rst of its kind in subSaharan Africa, DCH will host academic programs, labs, workshops, expertise exchanges , collaborative workspaces, a development studio, exhibitions and special events. www.tshimologong.joburg

Multi Discipline Source Code Gallery March - December | Tshimologong Precinct | Johannesburg The Source Code Gallery is an exhibition / showcasing space for the Digital Content Hub dedicated to showing digital art. It will be hosted by the Precinct and curated by Tegan Bristow, director of the Fak'ugesi Festival. The space will be launched in March 2019 and to align both with International Woman's Day on the 8th March and the Animation Festival taking place in Cape Town over the same period, the opening exhibition will screen and feature animations made by women.

Multimedia | Digital Digital Lab Africa #3 January - December | Online | Sub-Saharan Africa @

Digital Lab Africa is a springboard and an incubation platform for African creatives in digital content linked with innovation in Africa (web creation, virtual reality, video game, animation, digital music). DLA offers them a springboard to jump-start and accelerate their projects with the support and expertise of the DLA ecosystem (studios, events, producers, broadcasters, distributors, experts, incubation venues…) from France and Sub-Saharan African countries. Every year the 10 winning projects (2 projects per category) each receive a R42 000 cash prize and a Digital Lab Africa Incubation Pass to accelerate their projects' development. Created in 2016, Digital Lab Africa is an initiative of the French Institute and the French Embassy in South Africa. Animation | Residency Wendy Spinks | I am Chuma 1-30 April | Fontrevaud | France Wendy Spinks is the author of the South African animated project I am Chuma. She has been selected by our partners through hundreds of applicants to participate in the DLA x NEF International Animation Residency. She will benet from the International Residency for Animated Films programme which allows international authors to immerse themselves into their work for a month in a peaceful and inspiring atmosphere and enable them to meet and exchange with other artists in residency. www.nefanimation.fr

Music Maxime Zecchini @ Mozart Festival 28 January | Northwards House | Johannesburg Classical Music lovers will celebrate the 10th Birthday of the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival with a series of concerts under the theme “Ein Musikalischer Spass” (“A musical joke”). In partnership with the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival, IFAS is inviting the internationally acclaimed French pianist Maxime Zecchini, who is best known for practising the “left hand repertoire”, where a musician uses a single hand to play compositions. Night of Ideas Feminism at Work: Crafting feminist ideals in and beyond the creative sector 31 January| The Project Space, Victoria Yards | Johannesburg From the recent #MeToo movement to long-term local women's rights campaigns in South Africa, many critical conversations about women, feminism and the state of equality have been held over the past year. While South Africa's Constitution protects the equal rights of all, South African women are still ghting for equality in all spaces. During this Night of Ideas, we focus on the topic of feminism at work and more specically in the creative world, through the experience of four women working in the creative sector. February Literature Contxto Artcena February This collaborative project promotes the translation of contemporary playwrights' texts by French-speaking authors, as well as their distribution and adaptation on stage. IFAS participates this year in the translation of two plays: Master by David Lescot, translated by Abla Kandalaft; and She No Princess, He No Hero by Magali Mougel, translated by Chris Campbell. Music Cape Town Electronic Music Festival 2019 9 February | Castle of Good Hope | Cape Town Established in 2012 as a platform for South Africa’s burgeoning electronic music culture, the Cape Town Electronic Music Festival has gained an international recognition for being one of the most relevant and forward-thinking events on Africa’s music festival calendar. IFAS is inviting Pierre-Marie Oullion, the artistic director of Les Nuits Sonores, Lyon's well-known French Electronic Music Festival, to participate in this year’s festival. Street Art Tim Marsh @ International Public Art Festival 9-17 February | Salt River | Cape Town The 3rd International Public Art Festival (IPAF) organised by BAZ-ART, is around the theme “Generation Next: Educate, Collaborate, Empower”. It gives both local and international artists the opportunity to showcase their stories, skills and styles in real time on a global platform. The organisers aim to bring colour and art to the street of Salt River, showcasing local and international talent. Others activities hosted by BAZ-ART include street art tours, spraycan workshops and educational art programmes. IFAS brings the famous French street artist Tim Marsh to the event.

Dibuka Multi Discipline Dibuka All year long Dibuka is the biggest francophone multimedia library in South Africa with a collection of 17 000 documents. Visitors have access to books, comics, CDs and DVDs (French cinema and documentaries), French magazines, French textbooks, and much more. Francophonie French Language Festival de la Francophonie Opening event | 9 March | ProArte Alphen Park School | Pretoria The Francophonie Festival celebrates the diversity and richness of the Francophone cultures around the world through a series of cultural events. Coordinated by the Alliance Française of Pretoria and the Embassy of France in South Africa, in partnership with ProArte Alphen Park School, over 27 Francophone and Francophile countries represented in South Africa participate in the event. All Gauteng schools teaching French have been invited. Entrance is free and includes traditional food, drinks, concerts (feat. La Fanfare Couche-Tard), art masterclass (feat. March Street Art Ubuhle Bendalo curated by Breeze Yoko March | Braamfontein & Soweto | Johannesburg 2019 is the rst edition of Ubuhle Bendalo, an urban art residency devoted to street art in all its forms. South African multidisciplinary artist Breeze Yoko invites French street artist Doudou'Style and Togolese street artist Sitou Matthia for the creation of murals in Braamfontein and for an artistic workshop for women hosted by Trackside Creative in Soweto. The aim is to open up a crosscontinental conversation and the exchange of skills between grafti or street artists from different backgrounds.

Animation Cape Town International Animation Festival 8-10 March | Riverclub Observatory | Cape Town IFAS is again partnering with the CTIAF to promote collaboration between the French and South African animation industries. The prestigious Animation School Les Gobelins, as well as French animation directors and producers, are attending this year’s festival. IFAS is in charge of the opening screening, with the movie Dilili in Paris by Michel Ocelot. CTIAF is the only African animation festival on the continent and attracts a large international crowd with workshops, round-tables, networking sessions and movies. www.ctiaf.com

Performing Arts SAMSON directed by Brett Bailey 8-10 March | Woordfees | Stellenbosch 27-30 June | National Arts Festival | Makhanda Prolic South African director Brett Bailey gives a new view on the biblical story of Samson and Delilah in his latest work: SAMSON. The performance is a lyrical, sharp-edged, apocalyptic dance-musictheatre piece, based on this popular Old Testament hero of loss, betrayal and rage. It takes shape on a rich visual canvas with haunting choreography by Vincent Mantsoe, soaring vocals and live electronica by Shane Cooper. The myth is reinterpreted in a dystopian contemporary context of political extremism, unbridled capitalism, inequality and violence.

Book Launch Visionary Animal: Rock Art from Southern Africa 18 March | Origins Centre Museum | Johannesburg Visionary Animal (Wits University Press, IFAS-Research) is the English translation of L’Animal Voyant by French author, poet and photographer Renaud Ego, published in France in 2015 (Actes Sud). It is a rich collection of essays on rock art, illustrated with photographs from Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. This event is the rst of a series of book launches organised across South Africa and Lesotho during the second fortnight of March. Digital Laval Virtual 20-24 March | Laval | France For the 21st time, the VR/AR (Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality) & Immersive Techniques Community assemble in Laval for an inspiring, state-of-the-art, B-to-B oriented exhibition and conference programme. The French Institute in Paris invites virtual reality experts from all over the world to attend a week of special programmes called “Focus Immersive Realities”. April Performing Arts #MOI choreographed by Gaby Saranouf @ My Body My Space 23-28 April | Emakhazeni | Mpumalanga The My Body My Space Public Arts Festival presents cutting-edge performances, installations and exhibitions in public spaces throughout the Emakhazeni Municipality in rural Mpumalanga. Celebrating 25 years of democracy, the festival addresses the theme of freedom, with its subjective meanings as well as its possible inhibitors. In this context, Gaby Saranouf presents #MOI, a piece created to ght against violence towards women and children, with 3 new South African dancers. The choreography is inspired by an ancient ancestral system from Madagascar and reveals the question of moral and value.

May Workshop & Exhibition Territories of Migration May | IFAS & Afro-Middle East Centre | Johannesburg Cities such as Johannesburg emerged from massive transfers of populations in the late 19th century, and recent migrations even reshaped neighbourhoods and their activities. Similarly, Beirut often became a terminus for migrants and refugees eeing the different crises across the Middle East. Through the dialogue of academic researchers and artists, this one-day conference and exhibition propose an innovative approach, bringing together refugee experiences and testimonies from these two parts of the world that rarely meet one another. Organised by IFAS-Research, in partnership with the Afro-Middle East Centre (AMEC), the African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) and the Wits History Workshop. This project is part of the cycle celebrating the 80th birthday of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientique (CNRS)

Five Photographers Visual Arts Five Photographers: A Tribute to David Goldblatt An Exhibition of Alexia Webster, Jabulani Dhlamini, Mauro Vombe and Pierre Crocquet curated by John Fleetwoord and David Goldblatt Maseru | National Arts Festival @ Makhanda | Durban Featuring the work of four photographers selected by David Goldblatt before his death, Five Photographers was developed as a tribute exhibition, to celebrate Goldblatt's retrospective exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, Paris (21 Feb -13 May 2018). “When the Ambassador of France to South Africa became aware that I was to have an exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, he suggested that we should celebrate here. I thought then that this could be an opportunity to look at some of the photography – really a tiny fraction of the photography coming from this part of the world today. So I suggested to the Ambassador and he agreed to an exhibition of photographs to celebrate some of that work. Then I asked John Fleetwood if he would curate the show which I am very happy to say he agreed to do. Here then are a few photographs of four photographers each of whose work is as different from the others as can be imagined”. Ÿ

Music Fête de la Musique 8 June | Newtown | Johannesburg The Fête de la Musique is back for its 8th edition in Johannesburg. Open to musicians from all genres, hosting international artists alongside local musicians, this is a popular family-friendly event. Animation Annecy Festival 10-16 June | Annecy | France The Annecy International Animation Film Festival and its Market (Mifa) is the major international event for over 11 000 industry professionals. Performing Arts | Residency Boyzie Cekwana @ Extra Ordinaire 13-15 June | La Meinau & Neuhof | Strasbourg | France South African performer Boyzie Cekwana is participating in the latest edition of Urban Scenographies - 3 days of unprecedented artistic interventions taking place in public spaces in the Strasbourg neighbourhoods of La Meinau and Neuhof. These interventions are the result of a series of collaborations between 13 international artists during a 3-week residency with local associations and residents from various backgrounds and practices. Music | Dance Vogue Nights Jozi 14 June | Johannesburg IFAS is participating in Vogue Nights Jozi to redene South African queer culture, with the famous French dancer Lasseindra Ninja and a French DJ participating in this inclusive and intersectional nightlife project. Originating from the LGBTQ community in the late 1980s, Voguing is a form of modern dance characterised by photographicstyle poses integrated with angular, linear and rigid movements inspired by the model poses of Vogue magazine. Performing Arts Ersatz directed by Julien Mellano @ National Arts Festival 28-30 June | Makhanda IFAS is proud to continue an inspiring and dynamic 23-year partnership with the National Arts Festival, by supporting Ersatz, a solo without words, where objects and images are brilliantly put at the forefront of the piece. Between a playful performance and a disturbing farce, Julien Mellano embodies a strange specimen – half man, half machine – who seems to have suffered the consequences of a technological revolution not quite nished. Literature Leïla Slimani & Delphine de Vigan 4-8 September | Open Book Festival | Cape Town September | Dibuka | Johannesburg Internationally acclaimed French authors Leïla Slimani and Delphine de Vigan are participating in the Open Book Festival and are also visiting the Dibuka Library. French-Moroccan writer and journalist Leïla Slimani was awarded the 2016 Prix Goncourt for her novel Chanson douce (The Perfect Nanny). Delphine de Vigan is an award-winning French novelist and a director. She has published several novels for adults, D'après une histoire vraie (Based on a True Story) that won the Renaudot Prize and the Goncourt Prize for high school students. Visual Art Life according to James Barnor September - October| Gerard Sekoto Gallery | Johannesburg The Alliance Française of Johannesburg is hosting a James Barnor photographic exhibition, following its success at the 11th Rencontres de Bamako in 2018 and at the Alliance Française of Accra, Ghana. James Barnor is considered a pioneer of Ghanaian photography. His career covers a remarkable period in history, bridging continents and photographic genres to create a transatlantic narrative marked by his passionate interest in people and cultures. Through the medium of portraiture, Barnor's photographs represent societies in transition: Ghana moving towards its independence and London becoming a cosmopolitan, multicultural metropolis.

Visual Arts FNB Joburg Art Fair 13-15 September | Sandton Convention Centre | Johannesburg The FNB Joburg Art Fair is Africa's leading art fair focused on contemporary art from the continent and diaspora. It provides a space for leading artists, galleries, collectors, writers, thinkers and art lovers to congregate. Music Joy of Jazz 26-28 September | Johannesburg Joy of Jazz is South Africa's oldest jazz festival. For its 22nd edition, the festival is bringing more of the best local and international blues and jazz artists to Johannesburg to explore various musical traditions from across the world. Comics & BD Visual Arts Comics and Bandes Dessinées in Conversation September - November | Johannesburg Art Gallery | Johannesburg Comics are becoming increasingly recognised as a way to challenge and retell historical stories, both personal and social. The Johannesburg Art Gallery and the French Institute of South Africa are presenting an exhibition on South African comics and French “bandes dessinées”, curated by one of France's leading comics researchers and theorists, Thierry Groensteen, and a South African curatorial team, to explore these stories. The exhibition shows the development of a comic strip as well as its inuence on other artistic practices such as cinema and creative writing. It focuses on the role that comics play as an accessible form of creative expression and a means of enriching and educating our minds. The exhibition incorporates a wide selection of French “bandes dessinées” and celebrate comics and artists from South Africa and from the Francophone world. Local comics artists whose work is on display include Loyiso Mkhize, the talent behind South Africa's rst real superhero, Khwezi; Mogorosi Motshumi, the rst black South African to publish an autobiographical graphic novel (The Initiation) and the artist behind 80s comic strip Sloppy; and Luke Molver, who will be launching the second edition of his graphic novel series Shaka Rising this year. The exhibition also provides an opportunity for professional networking in publishing, animation and virtual reality innovations.

ABSA L’Atelier Visual Arts ABSA L‘Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award Award Ceremony | September | Johannesburg For over a decade, the French Embassy in South Africa, IFAS and the Alliance Française Network have been in partnership with Absa and SANAVA (South African National Association for the Visual Arts) to award the Absa L'Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award for the most promising South African artist. Every year, this award is given to a young artist who has shown continued improvement in the Absa L'Atelier art competition. Through IFAS, the winners can do an artistic residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, and on their return, have the opportunity to present their work on a broad platform within South Africa, though exhibitions touring in the Alliance Française network of South Africa and partnering galleries. https://lateliercompetition.com

Residency Philiswa Lila April - June | Cité Internationale des Arts | Paris | France Winner of the 2018 Absa L'Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award Philiswa Lila is doing a three-month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. In her work Self-Titled, for which she won the award, Philiswa uses her name (which means “be healed”) to explore the nuances of language, meaning and experiences of individualism. Self-Titled is part of a series called Self-Portraits, an ongoing project about individual experiences as recognisable or familiar to collective frameworks of culture. On her return, Philiswa will have the opportunity to exhibit her work, rst at the Absa Gallery and then through a national tour of the Alliance Française network in 2020. Exhibition Seeking Love by Banele Khoza March - December Banele Khoza is the 2017 winner of the Absa l'Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award. After spending a three-month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in 2018, as part of the award, 2019 will see him touring the country through the Alliance Française network and partnering galleries: 17 March – 19 April | Absa Gallery, Johannesburg 21 May – 21 June | Durban 1-21 August | Port Elizabeth 11 September – 11 October | Stellenbosch 16 November – 9 December | Pretoria

October Gastronomy So Chef! October | Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria, Durban, Port-Elizabeth, East London, Maseru So Chef! is back for a 6th edition of culinary activities and gastronomic masterpieces. Renowned Michelin Star chef Vincent Lucas and the “Meilleur Ouvrier de France” Frédéric Jaunault are taking part this year, along with other top chefs to be announced later. Last year saw over 1 300 people attend 44 events, including workshops in schools, TVET colleges, universities and cooking schools, gastronomic dinners, wine tastings and movie eat-alongs. Part of the National Nutrition Week of the SA Department of Basic Education (DBE) and in partnership with the Alliances Françaises.

Cinema European Film Festival October | Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria The 2019 edition of the European Film Festival shows a diverse lm programme including different genres from several European countries. The European Film Festival is part of EuropeWeeks, presenting a wide range of EU Member States cultural events in South Africa. Workshop Nostalgia and Rooting in Southern Neo-Liberal Cities 7-11 October| IFAS | Johannesburg IFAS-Research is co-organising an international workshop on urban studies, comparing dynamics in cities in Chile, Mexico and South Africa. After visiting Valparaiso and Mexico City, the panellists are coming to Johannesburg, to start a transcontinental study of urban dynamics in the southern hemisphere. Audiovisual DISCOP 20-22 November | Johannesburg Launched in 2012, the Johannesburg market is the #1 content production and distribution industry gathering in Africa. It has been a long-term partner of DLA. 1 187 delegates and 164 exhibitors representing 701 companies from 71 countries attended the 2018 edition. The French Institute Audiovisual department is participating in DISCOP to represent French expertise and help in the formation of new collaborations between industry players. www.discop.com

December Natural History Exhibition Bolt’s Farm December | Ditsong National Museum of Natural History Bolt's Farm is situated 2.5km south-west of the Sterkfontein Caves. Fossils of antelopes, pigs, elephants and rodents have been found there, but Bolt's Farm is nicknamed the “Kingdom of the Big Cats” because of the discovery of many big cat and sabre-toothed cat fossils. This exhibition showcases some of these specimens, and is also a celebration of 25 years of cooperation between South Africa and France in palaeontology and prehistory. This project is part of the cycle celebrating the 80th birthday of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientique (CNRS).

Visual Art Riason Naidoo December | South Africa Following his 2019 residency at the Cité des Arts, curator Riason Naidoo is presenting his research that explores the relationship of writing to curating in contemporary African art. Naidoo focuses in particular on Simon Njami's works as a novelist, as an editor of 35 editions of Revue Noire magazine (1991-2001), and as a curator inuenced by literature.

Residencies Cité Internationale des Arts Paris | France Ever since the Cité Internationale des Arts was founded in 1965 in Paris, artists from all over the world have been taking part in the residency programmes, creating cross-cultural dialogue. The Cité provides a place for artists from a wide range of disciplines to develop their projects, meet with other professionals and expand their networks, during a residency period of 3 to 6 months. Literature Mishka Hoosen Emerging author Mishka Hoosen is doing a literary exploration of contemporary perfume: its cultural heritage, modern forms, and role in crafting landscapes of memory and identity. The project looks at the emotional and intellectual appeal of perfume, its chemistry and design, as well as the way memory functions through perfume in a world increasingly characterized by loss: of heritages, of natural resources, and of time. Visual Arts Mawande Ka Zenzile Visual artist Mawande Ka Zenzile, represented by Stevenson Gallery, is working on a project called "Udludlilali". In Xhosa "Udludlilali" is known as a creature that doesn't have a master, which could bestow blessings to a fortunate family or devastation to a misfortunate household it nds on its path. “Udludlilali” explores the visible and nonvisible territorial tension sometimes caused by non-conventional artistic practices in conventional art spaces. This project is explored through a series of drawings and site-specic interventions. Video Kitso Lynn Lelliott Video artist Kitso Lynn Lelliott works on a project that imagines Paris through an altered ghostly perspective with the aim to deconstruct hegemonic imaging of the space. Lelliott works on images of the real, questioning history and its various narratives, crafting the idea of ghost, haunting and ancestralities.

SAFFCA residencies Saint-Emilion | France For the third consecutive year, IFAS and the Southern African Foundation For Contemporary Art (SAFFCA) are working together to invite two young artists to do an artistic residency in SaintEmilion, France. The residency gives them an opportunity to interact with local artists, develop and grow their creative practice, and expand their network internationally. www.saffca.com

Visual Arts Lwandiso Njara Lwandiso's work is centered around the contradicts of his Catholic education in contrast with Xhosa ancestral rituals. Through his pieces, he explores an experience of identity construction, spiritual awakening and development during his boyhood years in rural Transkei. He treats these two polarities as binary opposites which he does not necessarily seek to resolve, but uses them to construct a new emergent identity. Visual Arts Asemahle Ntlonti Asemahle Ntlonti is the 2018 winner of the Young Female Residence Award at the Project Space Africa. Asemahle tackles different themes in her work. The disappearance and later death of her great uncle during the 1960s prompted her to look deeper into her family history and the violent history of this country, and how it has affected many families of those who were once oppressed. She looks at intergenerational trauma, as well her own culture and upbringing.

Africa 2020 Multi Discipline Afrique Saison 2020 | Season Africa 2020 June - December 2020 | All across France The General Commissioner of the Season Africa 2020, N'Goné Fall, presented the Season in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban in November 2018. This programme aims to make pan-African contemporary creation known in France, by focusing on young and emerging talents. It is also an opportunity to launch strong partnerships in every eld of artistic creation, to encourage cultural entrepreneurship, and to value African expertise. Africa 2020 is built on four pillars: Ÿ A pan-African and multidisciplinary programme focusing on contemporary creativity and aimed at all audiences. The projects will not centre on a single artist, a single country, a single region, a single linguistic area or a single artistic discipline. Ÿ A programme co-produced by African professionals and French institutions. The aim is to steer away from a programming designed through a Franco-French prism and to safeguard the rst founding principle of Africa 2020: an invitation to look at and understand the world from an African perspective. Ÿ Projects designed as spaces to share knowledge and experiences. A “Pan-African-French” design and implementation of the programming, which will bring together professionals from different elds in order to promote the sharing of knowhow and intellectual debate. Ÿ A collaborative platform for the production and sharing of knowledge, structured by projects specically designed with a long-term effect.
