DEBATE

3rd grade-Week 5 Reading Language Arts MONDAY

SHOULD SCHOOL UNIFORMS BE REQUIRED?

TYLER MITROFF, 10 BETHESDA, MARYLAND School uniforms are a great idea! In a school without uniforms, some students might wear expensive clothes. Kids who can’t get nicer clothes might be judged by their appearance. But uniforms help make kids feel equal. They’re also good for school spirit. With uniforms, all kids can feel like a part of the community.

JONATHAN KIRN—GETTY IMAGES

Some schools make students wear uniforms. Other schools let kids pick what they want to wear. Here, two TFK Kid Reporters weigh in on the school uniform debate.

NORA WILSON-HARTGROVE, 9 DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA School uniforms should not be required. They take away a kid’s creativity. Many schools already have dress codes to make sure kids wear the right kind of clothing. And some schools with uniforms make girls wear skirts. Skirts can be very uncomfortable. Enough with the uniforms! Let kids learn to make their own choices about what to wear.

Opinion: Want to have fun and stay in shape? Play sports! By Fred Bowen, Washington Post, adapted by Newsela staff on 02.09.17 Word Count 488 Level 680L

This article was written by Fred Bowen. He is an author who has written 21 sports books for kids. I love sports. I also love collecting quotations that famous people have said. So I was delighted when I found "The Ultimate Dictionary of Sports Quotations" at my local library. I spent hours leafing through it. I read quotes from players, coaches and just about anyone who has thought about sports. Here are some of my favorites. "A winner never whines," said Paul Brown, a football coach. Sports Heroes Who Complain Aren't Cool

Brown coached the Cleveland Browns. He is in the football Hall of Fame for coaching. He knew that good players don't waste time complaining when they lose. Instead, they use that time to get This article is available at 5 reading levels at https://newsela.com.

better. Too many kids complain when they lose a game. They whine about the referees, the weather and other "bad breaks." Maybe they see their sports heroes complaining and think it's cool to do. "Competitors take bad breaks and use them to drive themselves just that much harder. Quitters take bad breaks and use them as reasons to give up." — Nancy Lopez, pro golfer Loving The Game Even When The Going Gets Tough

Champions such as Lopez don't quit when everything is going wrong. That goes for both kids and pros. Players who love the game work even harder when the going gets tough. Maybe that explains Lopez's success. She won 45 golf tournaments during her remarkable career. "Games lubricate the body and the mind." — Founding Father Benjamin Franklin I like this quote. It reminds me that people have been thinking about sports and games for more than 200 years! Founding Father Benjamin Franklin was a great inventor and thinker. Still, he didn't sit at his desk all day. Historian Edmund Morgan says that Franklin was very active. He loved to walk the streets of Philadelphia, hike and swim. Exercise Keeps Us Running Smoothly, Like Oil In An Engine

Franklin knew that exercise was good for people. It keeps our body and mind running smoothly, just like oil in an engine. That is what "lubricate" means. "We do not want our children to become a generation of spectators. Rather, we want each of them to become participants in the vigorous life." — President John F. Kennedy Kennedy was our 35th president. He knew that it's better for kids to do something than just watch. He said this more than 50 years ago. That's before computers, big-screen TVs, iPhones and iPads turned us all into watchers. Listen to Kennedy. Don't just sit and watch sports, like a spectator. Become a participant. Play sports, too.
