Opinion: With or without trophies, youth sports need to be fun By Fred Bowen, Washington Post, adapted by Newsela staff on 07.20.18 Word Count 437 Level 780L

Image 1. Kids participate in a soccer game at a U.S. Military base in South Korea. Photo by: U.S. Army photos/Edward N. Johnson

This opinion piece was written by Fred Bowen, a sportswriter who has written 22 books for kids. Jeff Walz is the head coach of the University of Louisville women's basketball team. Walz was frustrated after a 6-point loss to the University of Maryland, so he said a few things about youth sports, telling reporters: "Right now, the generation of kids that are coming through, everybody gets a ... trophy, OK? You finish last, you come home with a trophy." The coach added: "What's that teaching kids? It's OK to lose. ... I mean, not to be too blunt, but you're a loser." I have written about kids getting trophies no matter how they play and what their team's record is. I've also visited schools. When I do, I ask lots of kids about getting trophies and about their experiences. If Everyone Gets Trophy, Not Much Of A Prize

I think it's OK to give everyone a trophy or a certificate for participation on a team — up to 8 or 10 years old. But kids are smart. After a while, they realize that if everyone gets a trophy, it isn't much This article is available at 5 reading levels at https://newsela.com.

of a prize. Still, I think there's a much bigger problem with youth sports. The problem is this: 70 percent of young athletes stop playing organized sports by age 13, according to the National Alliance for Youth Sports. Sending Wrong Message

Most kids quit playing because the games and practices are no longer fun. There's also pressure to win. Some teams will only take the best players. This sends a message to most kids — you're not good enough to play. That needs to stop. Everyone needs to change the goals of youth sports, including coaches, kids and parents. We have to stop trying to find a few top athletes — the kind who play for Walz and other bigtime college coaches. Instead, we need to encourage as many kids as possible to stay active and to keep playing sports. Putting The Fun Back In Youth Sports

To do that, we don't need more trophies. We don't need more travel teams or more expensive equipment. We don't need coaches who act as if winning a basketball game is the most important thing in the world. Instead, we need to put more fun back in youth sports. In short, we need more joy — the joy of playing, the joy of competing, the joy of being part of a team.

DEBATE

4th Grade - Week 5 Reading Language Arts WEDNESDAY

IS SOCIAL MEDIA GOOD FOR SOCIETY? Students today have never lived in a world without social media. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok are a few of the most popular social-media websites and apps. They can be a fun way to connect with friends and family, especially those who live far away. Sometimes, people use social media to find jobs. But social media also attracts cyberbullies and trolls who seek to anger or annoy people. And hackers use social media to steal people’s personal information. Here, six TIME for Kids readers answer our debate question: Is social media good for society?

AKSHAT CHAKRABARTI, 8

MANALAPAN TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY

Social media is a great way to connect with people who you may not see all the time. It’s also great for making friends. Social media helps you build connections with kids who have the same interests. It is a quick way for people to get to know each other, even if they’re living across the world from one another.

DULUTH, GEORGIA

Although social media is somewhat fun, we’ve gotten to the point where people can’t put down their phones. Social media is changing our world completely. It causes people not to be their true selves and to pretend to be happy, just for public approval.

MATTHEW WRIGLEY, 10 FARMINGTON, MAINE

KATIE ONG, 10

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

When children use social media, they post stuff that parents may not want others to see. This may affect their privacy. Also, when kids use social media, they may be anxious that their friends’ lives are better than theirs. Some people only post the good parts of life. This can lead others to jealousy or depression.

JADA MOSLEY, 10

Social media is good for society because it lets you write to people if you need help. You can interact with other people and have fun. You can learn from people who live in different countries. If you have a question, you can ask someone. There is cyberbullying, but you can block people who post mean comments.

SIA SATISH, 10

CAROL STREAM, ILLINOIS

WEST WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY

In a world that is sometimes boring, social media offers incredible benefits. It can be entertaining. It can spread positivity and kindness. Furthermore, social media can introduce peers and children to new content and positive ideas.

THE NEXT DEBATE!

RANIA NOORANI, 11

Students can be enticed by their friends to follow trends on TikTok or Snapchat. They try to portray themselves as cool, to fit into a group. Sometimes, social media promotes bad practices or harmful activities. This can hurt people physically and mentally.

Should cities be car-free? Email your opinion to tfkeditors@time.com by March 17. Your response might be featured in an upcoming issue.

Create a Pros and Cons Chart A pros and cons chart gives two sides of a topic or issue in a two-column chart. Pros are arguments in favor of something, while cons are arguments against it. Pros are usually listed in the first column, while cons are listed in the second column. >

Your pros and cons chart will be about social media and its effects on our society.

1. List It.  Read up on social media and its effects on our society. How has it helped? How has it hurt? Make a list of the effects, both good and bad. 2. Organize It.  Decide where to place each effect, either in the pros column or cons column. Each item needs to be supported by evidence—facts or examples. Keep notes of your evidence, which you will discuss when you present your chart. 3. Support It.  Although your chart is a graphic feature, you may want to create other graphic features to support your evidence, including illustrations, graphs, or diagrams. Give the chart a title and your columns boldfaced headings. 4. Tweak It.  Carefully reread the information on your chart. Make sure all words are spelled correctly and sentences have appropriate punctuation. Add contentarea words if they are missing, and be sure readers can figure out their meanings. 5. Debate It!  Share your pros and cons chart with your class. Half of the group should present the pros, while the other half presents the cons. Decide if the pros and cons should each be presented all at once, or present one pro and one con at a time. Writing Checklist
