From the President Normally this would be called “the good, the bad and the ugly” but it is probably fairer to call it “the good and the bad”!
• The 1,100 attendees at the 2014 Fresh Connections in Auckland. It was fantastic and sets the challenge for Melbourne in 2015!
The Good
Top of the list is the mid-year relocation to Epping with new premises, new opportunities and a new way of thinking.
• The conclusion of the court proceedings in March 2014 brought to a close the negotiated outcome of our court case. This was a positive move especially given the turbulent year of 2013 and brings to an end the “decade of uncertainty”. • Store holders can now trade (buy or sell) their store allocations at both Footscray Road and Epping with confidence.
• The members’ share company (Fresh Start Holdings Ltd) has commenced. • The Gala Ball and the unveiling of the Fresh State Honour Board that lists those who stuck together through thick and thin!
• And, on a personal level, commencing Produce Time with my two partners – a hell of a lot of hard work but very rewarding! The Bad • The insane model of every store holder having to get their own building permit to do their store fit out – all 100 of them! And the resulting “absurd quotes” submitted by some fit out contractors under that model (maybe this section should be called “ugly” after all).
• Tightening our belts in preparation of the extra costs of Epping. • Collecting of Ledgers and Pallets prior to our move. The Outlook for 2015 – it looks good! • Top of the list is the mid-year relocation to Epping with new premises, new opportunities and a new way of thinking. • The Forklift Procession to Epping and raising hopefully 1 million dollars for charity. • Fresh Connections 12 to 15 May 2015 in Melbourne – this will be a monster! New model to deliver efficiencies If there is one thing that the fruit and vegetable industry is good at, it is recognising value. Whether it be apples, bananas, mangoes or any one of the hundreds of different fruits and vegetables, there is a price for everything. The fit out of the stores at Epping is no exception. The store holders have fairly good bulls..t barometers of whether things are overpriced and can easily recognise the balances between supply and demand. It is unfortunate that the initial model put in place for store holder fit outs opened up the proverbial ‘can of worms’ when it came to value for money.

Under the previous model … 100 store holders had to get architects to design plans; obtain quotes for all aspects of the fit out; finalise plans; engage contractors; obtain their Occupancy Certificate and their Certificate to Trade all individually. Previous Model in Place Under the previous model, all store holders had to obtain a Building Permit individually. This meant that 100 store holders had to get architects to design plans; obtain quotes for all aspects of the fit out; finalise plans; engage contractors; and when the work was completed, obtain their Occupancy Certificate and their Certificate to Trade all individually (and somehow run their day to day businesses at the same time)! The unpalatable part of this model was that there were no efficiencies – no “volume buying” of materials or engagement of contractors – it was unlikely to be delivered on time and there was no consideration that the large stores were the same and the medium stores were the same. Put simply, that model was expensive,
not working and store holders still had to pay for it – in the order of $20-30M combined! What do store holders need to do to open their doors for business? The simple answer is lighting! The store holders could just install lighting in their store area, receive their Occupancy Certificate and Certificate to Trade and open their doors for business. However most store holders want other functions as well, not just refrigeration to look after their stock. Many have also expressed the view that they want to do a basic fit out to open; observe buying characteristics and dispatch flows from their store; and carry out more tailored fit outs six to twelve months after opening.

What is the solution? The simplest solution is to group similar basic models together and undertake each model as a job set. The store models would be: 1. Open plan: lighting 2. Open plan: with refrigeration added 3. 2 temperature zones: with divide across the store 4. 2 temperate zones: with a cool zone running lengthwise in store The office models would be: 1. Do nothing (only used for storage) 2. Basic office fit out: lights, kitchenette, floor covering, walls and painting 3. Basic office fit out plus: air-conditioning, ceiling and fire sprinkler extension
3 Any further add-ons could be done at a later date and store holders get to enjoy the benefit of “bulk purchasing.” Community Agreement At a Fresh State members meeting, store holders agreed that this process was the best way forward. The advantage of this model is that much of the work can be undertaken simultaneously as it is possible to engage a number of firms for each aspect of work and it brings coordination, efficiencies and “bulk buying” advantages. This way the delivery of the store fit outs should be more efficient, with savings for store holders, delivered in a more coordinated manner and, all being equal, on time!

Christmas is well and truly in the air as the Melbourne Wholesale Market dig deep to donate to charities in a variety of ways. Recently Orino’s Café hosted the Melbourne Market Charity Eat Off to raise funds for Callum, a four year old boy suffering from cancer.
Melbourne Market Charity Eat Off The goal was to consume a 2kg steak + 500gm chips + 1 side salad in the fastest time with wholesalers flocking to Orino’s (Café #3) to either watch or enjoy this big big breakfast. Wholesalers, growers and retailers have long been reputed as being generous with their time as well
as their hip pockets. “Our market community has a tradition of helping those in need” said Shane Schnitzler, Fresh State President. “This was a great event for not only a well deserved cause but it was also a bit of fun bringing the boys together with lots of laughs at the end of a working day.” $2000 was raised to assist Callum who suffers from a type of cancer called neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma almost exclusively strikes infants
and children, and is the third most common type of Childhood Cancer after Leukemia and brain tumors. It is also the leading single cause of cancer deaths of children under 5. The money raised will assist Callum to travel to the USA to receive life saving treatment. The generosity of the Melbourne Wholesale Market community strikes again.

The experience is something Steve will never forget. “It was both challenging and confronting at first.” he said. “We become very comfortable in our jobs and our surroundings here and I guess in hindsight I needed a shake up.” Steve says the course was one of the hardest things he has ever done. “I wanted to quit at first but persevered and now it is one of the best things I have ever done!” Steve believes the ability to network with politicians, industry icons and likeminded individuals was invaluable. “I learnt so much and am so excited about putting that learning into practice” he says. “I would encourage as many wholesalers as possible, to put their hand up and participate. It opens your eyes and your mind to a much larger part of the industry to what we are used to here in the Melbourne Wholesale Market and that is priceless”.

Melbourne Market Charity Golf Day Good weather, great company and a golf buggy was the recipe for success at the recent Melbourne Market Charity Golf Day.

Teams of four descended on Kingston Links Golf Club in Rowville to not only enjoy the comradery of the day but to also try their hand (or should we say swing) at a chance to win a choice of either a BMW or a new model Cooper Mini. The cars, generously provided by Doncaster BMW, were up for grabs on the 18th hole and it was all eyes on the prize at the tee as appropriate clubs were chosen for the winning shot. No one was lucky enough to win a car on this hole, however seventy year old golfing veteran John Barker (formerly from Barker’s) came close … hitting his very first hole in one in his golfing career – but unfortunately on the wrong hole!

The four ball Ambrose competition was won by Fresh State member Australian Strawberry Distributors (ASD) led by Joe Ripepi who generously donated all prizes back to the charity proceeds. Most of the 90 participants on the day stayed for dinner and presentations at Kingston Links and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as Simone Baird from Debra Australia spoke of her personal journey with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) – a rare disease that her daughter Eliza was born with, where the skin blisters and peels at the slightest touch. Without any government funding, EB sufferers rely on charitable donations to assist with support and research into the disease. Fresh State Vice President and Golf Day Chair Joe Amalfi said it was a very successful event. “Overall it was a great day thoroughly enjoyed by everybody but most importantly we raised about $26k for a well deserved charity – Debra Australia.” Joe also acknowledged the teamwork of the Melbourne Market Community in bringing this event together. “This was the first time Fresh State and the Melbourne Market Authority have joined forces to assist the Melbourne Market Lions Club to organise the golf day and it was yet another sign of solidarity from both organisations.” continued Joe. The Melbourne Market Charity Golf Day acknowledges and thanks participants who took part in the day together with all sponsors especially Platinum Sponsor Toyota Material Handling, Gold Tee Sponsor CMI Hino and a special thank you to Kingston Links Golf Club for their generous donation.
