THE BIGGEST TACO EVENT IN THE WORLD IS BACK!

Taco Truck Throwdown 9: Saturday, Aug. 17 at Chukchansi Park Once again presented by La Tapatia Tortilleria, Inc., Taco Truck Throwdown is scheduled for Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Chukchansi Park in Downtown Fresno. Lasting from 3 p.m. to Midnight, the headline entertainment has been revealed: Classic hip-hop veterans Goodie Mob will take the stage. Bay-area legend and Too Short will also be in the house. And the iconic Kumbia Kings headline the night. As usual, over 30 of Fresno and the Central Valley’s finest taco trucks are expected to participate, competing for both judges’ and people’s choice trophies. Individual tickets for TTT9 can be purchased by visiting FresnoGrizzlies.com or the Chukchansi Park ticket office during usual business hours and Fresno Grizzlies home games. VIP ticketing is on sale as well: Ultimate VIP Package ($199) includes: Admission to Taco Truck Throwdown 9, 20 taco vouchers, taco delivery service provided by OrdrSlp, access to a private area with unlimited beer, soda and water and a TTT9 T-shirt. As in past years, taco vouchers ($2.50) must be purchased and exchanged for tacos at each individual truck. Items beyond tacos may be purchased at participating trucks, using either cash or card (if applicable). Local music acts including “The Box,” Cumbiatron, Teezzy Radio, Down4U and La Marcha

will perform throughout the duration of the event, in addition to entertainment by Lucha Extreme Wrestling. “The World Taco-Eating Championship” will also return to Chukchansi Park on August 17, the third consecutive year the champ

will be crowned at Taco Truck Throwdown. The World TacoEating Championship is governed by Major League Eating, the same sanctioning body which oversees the July 4 Hot Dog Eating Championship at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. Champions crowned in Fresno 7

include Joey Chestnut (2017) and Geoff Esper (2018), two nationally known titans of the competitive eating circuit. Several world-ranked competitive eaters will once again participate in this year’s event. In 2017 Chestnut, ranked number one in the world, downed 92 carne asada tacos in eight minutes to take the title. It’s only fitting such an event take place in the “Taco Capital of The World.” While pairing the event with a Friday Fresno Grizzlies home game may return in future years, Taco Truck Throwdown 9 will be limited to Saturday’s all-day festival. Nevertheless, new-for-2019 Fresno Tacos merchandise and on-field

apparel is currently available at the Fresno Grizzlies Team Store, FresnoGrizzlies.com and will be available at TTT9 as well.

The outfielder started in Double-A Arkansas where he hit .313 in 61 games. His 11 homers and 47 RBI were enough for a promotion to Tacoma. Braymer enters his fourth professional season with the Nationals organization and his first at the Triple-A level. The lefty made his professional debut on June 27, 2016 after being selected in the 18th round (544th overall) out of Auburn University. Braymer has continued to climb through the Washington minor league ranks and could be a mid-rotation starter for Fresno next season.

Gushue enters his sixth professional season and third with the Nationals organization. The switch-hitting catcher has made the most of his time splitting duties with Raudy Read. As of July 13th (52 games), Gushue has mashed eight homers, with two of them coming against Sacramento. When the University of Florida product bats fifth in the lineup, he hits a tremendous .471.

Coaching Staff Randy Knorr, Manager Former Major League catcher Randy Knorr is the inaugural Fresno Grizzlies manager during the Washington Nationals affiliation, and is the 11th manager in franchise history. Knorr, 50, has minor league managerial and coaching experience in the Washington organization dating to the 2005 season, and served as Senior Advisor for player development to Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo in 2016 and 2017. A veteran of 11 MLB seasons as a player, Knorr turned pro after being selected in the 10th round of the 1986 First Year Player Draft out of high school in Baldwin Park, California, by the Toronto Blue Jays. After making his Major League debut in 1991 for Toronto, Knorr caught 47 games for a pair of World Series-winning clubs between 1992 and 1993, remaining with the Toronto organization through the 1995 season. He would also appear in the Majors for the Houston Astros (1996-1997, 1999), Florida Marlins (1998), Texas Rangers (2000) and Montreal Expos (2001), prior to his retirement as a player following the 2004 season. Knorr played his final three seasons in Triple-A with Montreal for Ottawa of the International League (2002) and Edmonton (2003-2004) of the Pacific Coast League, before remaining with the organization as a minor league manager as MLB operations shifted from Montreal to Washington, D.C. Knorr appeared in 1,423 games as a 19-year-professional, including 253 games in the big leagues. Guiding Class A Savannah of the South Atlantic League in 2005, Knorr was just 36 during his first season as a manager, before a promotion to A-Advanced Potomac. In 2008, Knorr led the Potomac Nationals to the Carolina League Championship, the franchise’s first domestic minor league ring after relocating to Washington, D.C. In 2009 he served as Washington’s Major League bullpen coach, before taking the reins of the Double-A Harrisburg Senators of the Eastern League in 2010, a pivotal club in developing the Nationals’ Major League squads that would win four of six National League East division titles between 2012 and 2017. Pitchers Stephen Strasburg, Tanner Roark and Drew Storen were all under Knorr’s tutelage at Harrisburg in 2010, as was infielder Danny Espinosa. Knorr also managed franchise staples Ian Desmond and Ryan Zimmerman in the lower levels. Before moving into a front office role as Senior Advisor for player development in 2016 and 2017, Knorr was the Nationals’ Major League bench coach for four seasons (2012-2015), and was also manager at Triple-A Syracuse in 2011, before re-assuming that post in 2018 during the final year of the clubs’ affiliation. 2019 in Fresno will be Knorr’s first experience in the PCL since playing for Edmonton (current Round Rock Express franchise) in 2004.

Coaching Staff Brian Daubach, Hitting Coach Entering his ninth season as a coach with the Washington Nationals organization, former Major League first baseman Brian Daubach, 46, will instruct the organization’s Triple-A hitters for a fourth-consecutive season. Daubach played in 661 MLB games over eight seasons for the Florida Marlins (1998), Boston Red Sox (1999-2002, 2004), Chicago White Sox (2003) and New York Mets (2005), and suited up for 1,235 additional minor league games during a 17-year playing career (1990-2006). Daubach was selected in the 17th round of the 1990 First Year Player Draft out of high school in Belleville, Illinois, and makes for a total of three World Series rings on the 2019 Fresno Grizzlies coaching staff. Daubach was a member of the 2004 Red Sox.

Brad Holman, Pitching Coach A veteran of seven professional seasons as a player, Brad Holman, 50, enters his second season as Washington’s Triple-A pitching coach, after serving as the Texas Rangers’ Major League bullpen coach in 2016 and 2017 and at Triple-A Syracuse (International League) in 2018. After turning pro in 1990, selected in the 35th round of the First Year Player Draft by the Kansas City Royals, Holman made his Major League debut in 1993 for the Seattle Mariners with 19 relief appearances. Holman also pitched in the PCL for Seattle affiliates in Calgary (1993-1994, current Albuquerque Isotopes franchise) and Tacoma (1995).

Eric Montague, Athletic Trainer Eric Montague enters his second season as head athletic trainer for the Triple-A Nationals, first assuming that post for the 2018 Syracuse club (International League). Montague is in his 21st season in professional baseball, and his seventh with the Washington Nationals, spending the previous four seasons (2014-2017) as head trainer at Double-A Harrisburg (Eastern League). Prior to first joining Washington for the 2013 season at A-Advanced Potomac (Carolina League), Montague spent 10 seasons as a minor league athletic trainer with the Houston Astros, including two seasons with Double-A Corpus Christi (Texas League) in 2011 and 2012. He first worked in baseball for the New York Mets from 1998 through 2001.

JAMES BOURQUE Grizzlies right-handed relief pitcher James Bourque, a 14th round draft pick out of the University of Michigan in 2014, completed a long journey to the bigs when he made his Major League debut on May 26 of this season in D.C. against the Miami Marlins. Now in his sixth professional season with the Washington Nationals organization, Bourque (pronounced “burke”) was first summoned to the Majors from Double-A, and has been with the Grizzlies since June 2. He is currently ranked as the Nats’ #17 overall minor league prospect according to MLB.com. Q: You have a very interesting name; James Buchanan Bourque. Were you named after the president? James Bourque: I don’t think so, I think it’s a family name. It ended up working out that way for me. People say he (James Buchanan) is the worst president ever so we just kind of skip over that part and go straight for the confusing last name (pronunciation).

Q: Your last name isn’t pronounced based on how it looks. Do people get confused by it? JB: I would say the majority of the time people get confused by the name. It’s said like “Burke” but

people just assume it sounds like how it is spelled. For my MLB debut, they mispronounced it. At this point, I am immune to it. I will respond to either. Q: Another interesting thing about you is the mustache that you were rocking earlier in the season. How did that come about? JB: So the mustache started as a joke in 2018. Some of the guys on the team were talking smack about how I couldn’t grow a beard. So I said I can grow a mean mustache and that was something we were allowed to have at High-A. I grew the mustache out and we ended up winning the first half. I was throwing pretty well and kept it going. I had a two-month streak going where I was throwing really well so I had to keep it. In the offseason, I got added to the Nationals 40-man roster and everyone I was working out with said hey you have to keep that thing man. It got you there so you have to keep it. I kept the mustache but after some misfortune recently where I wasn’t throwing as well as I 19

A Conversation With... wanted to, I had to change it up. We can always bring it back but for now I had to get rid of it and try something different. Q: You were born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Did you enjoy growing up in a college town? JB: It was great, I had a blast. Obviously, every Saturday in the fall, the town is going crazy. Growing up I would go to football games and it was nice because in the spring you can also go to baseball games. There were also Michigan baseball camps, so I was able to do a full circle when I went there. I thought it was a great experience to grow up there. Q: What was your high school sports experience like at home? JB: It was definitely a different experience. I played pretty competitive travel baseball and, in the Midwest, that seems to be where the more advanced and serious guys go to play. They would go and play travel baseball so the high school baseball wasn’t as competitive, but it was still fun. It was different but cool to be one of the bigger guys on campus because I came from travel ball. I was one of the few guys who played travel baseball so guys would look up to me for pitching advice. That was a new experience for me because in high school I wasn’t very big and not that good at baseball. So giving advice was weird but I definitely enjoyed having a good time with my friends. Q: Then you became a Michigan Wolverine. Was that a childhood dream of yours? JB: So I always envisioned myself going to Michigan to play football and I think every young boy in Ann Arbor thinks that too. There were a lot of people from my high school and the neighboring high school that went to Michigan to play football. So I think in high school, I had a hipster moment where I didn’t want to do what everyone else wanted to do. When baseball became a reality for

me, I think it opened everything back up. When I visited other schools and saw what they had to offer, I think I realized what a unique opportunity it would be to go to Michigan and I ended up going there and had the best time of my life. Q: What did Michigan specifically open your eyes to, in terms of baseball? JB: My sophomore year, we had a new coach. He brought a completely new attitude to the program and I think their success this year in reaching the College World Series proves that he was doing it the right way. He really taught us what to do off the field and how to be successful on the field. We thought we were a very disciplined team and that really helped everyone

grow up. That is part of the reason of why you go to college, is to grow up. He did a really good job of that. Q: This year, your alma mater made it all the way to the final game of the College World Series, and we know you were rooting for them from the selection show all the way to Omaha. How proud are you to be a Wolverine? JB: Yeah, it was pretty incredible. When you are at Michigan, it’s always winning the Big Ten that’s the goal. When the new coach came in, he said the goal was Omaha, it is always Omaha. At the same time, no Big Ten team had really done anything at that level except Indiana couple of years ago. No team had really gone very far and that was a surreal moment. I still don’t think it has really hit me yet

21

22

with how far the program has come and where it is going. I think when I go back to visit in the fall and see the coach again is really when it will hit me. Wow, they were a game away from winning the whole thing. It was awesome. Q: You were drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 14th round in 2014, what was that day like for you? JB: So I kind of had a unique experience. I was on the cusp of getting drafted but didn’t know if I was going to sign or come back for my senior year of school. So, I went to the Cape Cod League for the summer and was working out with my team there. Basically, I had planned on being there for the entire summer. I was in the middle of a scrimmage that I was pitching in and after I was done, someone came out to me and said hey you just got drafted by the Nationals. I checked my phone and all of a sudden I have all these texts and phone calls. I had four missed calls from the local scout for the Nationals. It was definitely a different moment because most people have draft parties or they are with their family. I was 12 hours from home with a bunch of strangers but it is still a cool story. Once I got selected, I knew I was going to sign and I drove home real fast and was in Florida four days later ready to go. Q: You were a starter that converted to relief and your career really took off after the change. How difficult was the transition for you? JB: For me it was easy- when you are a really bad starter, it was easy to get off that routine. When I came back from injury (in 2015), I was still getting some feel back and wasn’t throwing quite as hard as I do now. I struggled a bit and finally made a mechanical change in the offseason. I worked with a new group of guys and came back for Spring Training in 2018 and said I would like to try out this reliever thing. I think this starter thing hasn’t really panned out. I think last year was a big adjustment period for me to figure out routines and how to pitch people. This year I am a lot more comfortable and have a better

idea of what to do out of the pen. Q: You were with Double-A Harrisburg in the Eastern League when you got the call that any professional baseball player dreams of. Take us through your big league call-up. JB: I had been throwing pretty well and felt pretty comfortable in Harrisburg. After a game, I went to grab some food and I got a phone call from a South Carolina number. I knew my manager was from there so I put two-and-two together and picked up the phone. He said Bourque, I need you to come back to the field because you have to go to D.C. tomorrow. It was pretty surreal. My first call was to my parents and I think six hours later they were in the car driving to Washington. I hit up some friends afterwards and they drove through the night from Chicago. To have that support and the reactions I got from everyone that I called was pretty great.

little bit quicker and so the four days that I was up there, it seemed like everything was going. I was trying to get tickets, trying to coordinate plans with family and friends plus this whole thing called a baseball game to prepare for. There was a lot going on but looking back on it now, it’s easy to see what traps you can fall into. The first one is out of the way so if we get back up to the big leagues, we know exactly what to expect and how to attack. Q: It’s your first time in Fresno and on the west coast for the most part. How have you enjoyed your first taste of California so far?

Q: You pitched in one game and were with the big club for a few days, but what do you take from that first Major League experience?

JB: Well the weather is great. Everyone says it is hot, which it is but I like the stereotypical dry heat. I am fully bought in because in Michigan you are sweating through every shirt you have during the summer. I like the occasional breeze and of course the travel. I love seeing the west coast and all the new cities. It is definitely different, but I am all in on it. I am just enjoying my time here for now and helping the Grizzlies win.

JB: Yeah, people always say that in your first game everything goes a
