Welcome back! Congratulations, you’ve made it to issue 2! In the last issue we promised to be back in December bigger and better than ever before... so here we are, back in November. With a slimmer magazine. And less of them. But at our very own launch party. With a bunch of seriously good bands and folk who’ve come to see them. The future is coming. Ya boy, Jake Priddle editor@fret-buzz.net

rom sold out first gig down the local to super sweaty support slots for the likes of VANT, Kicks are a force to be reckoned with. They’ve only been around since February this year, they’re already taking Southampton music scene by storm and aim to become a permanent feature in the landWhere are you guys from? scape as the new local heroes of Southampton [Farnborough]. Joe’s from Farnborough, he gets the train down rock n roll. Well... that’s enough every time we rehearse smoke blowing from us - here’s a How long have you been around? selection of Q’s & A’s from when We got together in February, Joe joined in June so we went without a bassist for we met up for a shoot and a chat quite along time, and it’s been going well. Our first gig was in the Juniper Berry on down town a few weeks ahead of May the 12th - we sold it out, so like 150 their first ever headline show people, really sweaty. For our first gig you can’t ask for anything better than that. Playing to that many people meant we started out pretty strong

Influences? British bands: The Jam, The Clash, Oasis mostly. We take lots of different influences from loads of other bands too like Nirvana, even The Who. Arctic Monkeys as well. We’re verging on punky in some ways, but mostly rock n roll. We’ve got different aspects but they all come together to make a really good sound. Marron 5… Justin Bieber… Have you noticed that? Our Facebook Bio has Justin Bieber in there, has no-one noticed that yet?
Highlight gig so far? Definitely the VANT gig, that was a big one at The Loft, it was brilliant to play there. That was [Joe’s] first proper gig so playing there was just amazing. Also playing The Joiners for the first time was mental, just because of the history of the venue and the huge mosh-pits. Apart from [Paddy’s] guitar going out of tune every five minutes, the atmosphere helped us overcome that and it was a good turn out with everyone there who came for the music. I guess we don’t really have a stand out gig really because with every gig we always try to give it our all, we’ve been really consist-
Anything recorded yet? We have a few demos, but we’re just scared to release them - don’t know why. Recording at home was fine but we want to record in a studio properly. We want to record a proper single and then maybe a couple of demos all together - hopefully we should have something out by the end of the year or early 2018
Where do you see yourselves in a few years time?
Looking forward to the Fret-Buzz Launch Gig? Definitely! Can’t wait. It’s our first headline gig so its going to be mental. We’re going to get a load of people down, hopefully sell it out, make it nice and sweaty. For us to be around since only February and for us to get our first headline gig together is crazy. With support from Drug Store Romeos too is going to be fucking quality. It’s a bit surreal but its happening so… [aww that’s cute]

We want to be selling out venues in Southampton, headlining gigs and just being well known really. Hopefully we would have gone on a mini tour by then, release a few singles maybe an album, play Wembley? I guess just being known as a Southampton band - when people mention Kicks and people know who we are and where we come from. The music scene in Southampton is definitely growing and we want to represent that. And just to continue to write songs that are as good as the ones we are writing now

Bonus question: Who’s your favourite Gallagher? Any other local bands that you would recommend? Casava, Costellos, Minister, Bel Esprit… Kicks. Southampton’s got a really good scene at the moment, it’s got a lot better, and to see Casava sell out The Loft is really good. It’s good to see a local band getting a lot of support as well as ourselves, and to see the scene really growing
Liam! There I’ve said it. Noel’s great, [Paul Gallagher!] but Liam is just cool as fuck. I feel like he has more of an influence over fashion and more of the way that kind of music is conveyed. He was the voice of the 90’s in Britain and he was the face of it as well. Noel’s just a bit boring… he looks like an Owl. He’s the clever one, but a bit beige though.

his track is guaranteed to get stuck in your head. E-L-I-Z-A is reminiscent of Skeleton Song by Kate Nash, a sort of coming of age internal personality battle song. Each track released by Lauran shows growth as a musician and writer. Growing towards what we don’t know, but it’s something great. Keep them coming!
entral Line is a breath of fresh air from the mundane, offering a collection of storytelling and soul, this EP deserves a decent listen. I can’t make up my mind for favourite track. Central is super chill and smooth whereas I’m A Man sounds so slick. I love the minimalist approach to each tracks composition contrasted by big beefy brass parts. This is a EP to keep coming back to.
ODDA is an imperfect indie singer/songwriter who makes sounds behind closed doors. His debut single explores all that is being human. From the judgement of others to the insecurities of ourselves, the song is an expression of reality” Yeah, that sounds about right. A song for reflecting and feeling empty. What a beautiful and emotive two minutes forty five seconds of your life.

ust Jack has returned to the world of full length album making! 8 years and 4 EP’s since Jack’s last, What We Did Today carries echoes from throughout his previous works and beyond. As always there is an impressive breadth of styles and genres on offer, each carrying it’s own take on the insightfully fluid wordplay, distinctively relaxing vocals and kick-ass instrumentals that Jack is known for. Tracks like Undesirable Element bring back the Jack of old’s storytelling skill, while the beautiful acoustic track No Cause For Alarm and more funky tracks than I can mention continue build an experience that evokes all the summer vibes in the most thoughtful way. It’s all so familiar and all so completely fresh.

litter and mess is an album/EP of two halves. Glitter - three studio recorded tracks, and Mess - a bunch of live and remixed tracks. Title track Glitter and Mess is actually decent song pulsing its way along towards a big synthy solo with an infectious chorus gluing it all together. Honey, I and Temptress are solid too - very Anteros which you can’t complain about. Live tracks - take them or leave them, not sure about the Porcupine remix. The Sleep Well remix of Honey, I on the other hand is sick love that track. All in all a solid album/EP (which is it?) but a bit disjointed.

f you have a hankering for 90’s inspired guitar band escapism, this is the track for you. Rock n Roll riffs and affected bass-lines, this track drips nostalgia for the good old days of attitude, indie nights and laddy anthems. My only grip with Say is a sort of lack in conviction in the vocals - the content is there, I feel it could just be delivered with more of a punch. Apart from that, get right on it boys!

O
n a super windy night next to the sea in the idyllic stone walled venue of The Square Tower, DevinJade supports Indie Alt Folk harmony trio Wildwood Kin for an evening of all round musical perfection. Local singer songwriter Devin-Jade did crazy well to perform solo in such a vast unforgiving venue such as this, but she nailed it effortlessly with her huge voice and even bigger vocal range. How the hell she reached some of those notes seemingly without a struggle amazes me! Covers and originals galore, the scene was set for Wildwood Kin to take over from a strong warm-up. To be honest I think Devin-Jade stole the show from right under their feet and I can see a bright future for this young starlet.

s you may know (I hope you do), Calum was the last issues introducing artist so we thought we’d pop along to one of his latest gigs to see what all the fuss is about in person. Calum is an all round crowd pleaser, a great showman, and even more of a really nice guy. He knows how to entertain the crowd of fresh faces and super fans alike keeping the momentum going throughout the entire set - there’s never a dull moment when Calum Lintott is on stage. Teasing the crowd with massively upbeat feel good songs (and the occasional sadder song) this was a night to remember. I’d recommend anyone to go and see Calum if you get the chance. Even if it’s not your cup of tea, you’re guaranteed to have a good time.

erry has it all. She’s got the style, the quirky dance moves and she’s certainly got the voice. New tracks, old tracks and the mandatory Jamie T cover, this was a whistle stop tour of Portsmouth’s finest. We’ve been itching to see Jerry perform again - the last time was at Victorious c.2014 and have been following her progress ever since - so it was an honour to see Jerry Williams and her band play underground at Blacksheep Bar on the Island. Supporting the songstress of Portsmouth was another rising star - Lauran Hibberd. Local to the Isle of Wight, Lauran was of equal quality and impact. Also
with full band in toe, we got to hear a few new ones, which are a step above her previous releases, and the good old classics. We’ve seen her countless times before but this time something seems to have clicked into place - I don’t think it’ll be too long until we see Lauran go a lot higher. More than I can say for The Incredible Shrinking Mic Stand. Supporting the support was Liam Burke and his drummer Alistair Copping with a solid ‘man, guitar and drums’ performance. You can tell Liam has a huge base of influences through his varied set, but in no way distracting Liam Burke warmed the whole night up nicely enough.
