Calum Lintott
“I’ve got loads of songs that are ready to record and be thrown into the musical abyss”
I
t’s already been a pretty crazy 2017 for Southampton singer-songwriter Calum Lintott, from being drafted in to perform on the Common People Main Stage to supporting Frank Turner, and the solo star doesn’t want to stop there… Calum Lintott is certainly making a name for himself in Southampton at the moment. Not everyone gets the opportunity to support the legend that is Frank Turner, and certainly hardly anyone can say they’ve supported an artist of that calibre in a 200 capacity venue. “Supporting Frank was a cracking experience, he’s a lovely chap and has some pretty great tunes, it was an absolute pleasure to be asked by The Joiners to play the show”. Artists more than anyone understand the importance of grassroots music venues and Calum Lintott’s energetic live shows make it easier to encourage people to go out and discover unsigned talents. “People honestly don’t realise how much incredible stuff is about at the moment. Such a range of genres, styles and ages too! People need to check out Wild Front, The Diamond Age, The Manatees, The Dead Freights, Submariner, Bel Esprit, Sean McGowan, and Jack Dale. I could go on and on and on”. Calum’s new relationship with Tara Newman Management is further evidence of the movements he’s making within the Southampton scene. “It means I can write
a lot more and focus on making the music right”. Local legends Psychedelia South are even getting behind Lintott too by putting on a huge headline show with him at newlyopened The Loft on Friday 27th October. “I’ve got loads of songs that are ready to record and be thrown into the musical abyss. I can’t wait for everyone to hear some of the new tunes, see the new videos and meet them at some shows!” Tickets for Calum Lintott’s show at Southampton’s The Loft on Friday 27th October can be purchased at See Tickets and Dice.

ollowing a triumphant UK tour in support of their debut top 10 album Live For The Moment, Sheffield indie-rockers The Sherlocks are currently on a career-high and are aiming for bigger and better results next time around. Fret-Buzz caught up with lads before their show at The 1865 in Southampton during their tour… “In every major city I think we’ve played every small venue there is”, lead singer Kiaran Crook explains when discussing the importance of small, independent live music venues. It’s clear that the band owe a lot of their success to them and have
put in a real graft to get to where they are today. “I think we’ve been one of those bands who, as well as playing all of the main cities, we try and get to the smaller places and you’re not going to find that many major venues in those places”.

The band became the first South Yorkshire band to break into the top 10 with a debut album since Arctic Monkeys, but the band don’t measure their success on Spotify streams. “I don’t think any of us get into the numbers side of it too much otherwise you’ll drive yourself nuts”, says drummer Brandon Crook, brother of Kiaran, “The reaction from fans is what matters to us and everyone seems to love it. We’re noticing now that, especially on this tour, all the album tracks which weren’t getting as much attention because people didn’t know them - everyone is singing them this time around”.

After selling out most of the shows on this tour, The Sherlocks are once again aiming for bigger and better next time around. “Our agent will work out how much it’s going to jump up and what will be the right step”, explains Kiaran. Jokingly, bassist Andy Davidson said, “You never know, we might do 20 nights at Sound Control in Manchester - it’s always an option. It’s clear to see that the four-piece are buzzing from their tour and are ambitious about their future. What will be interesting to see is how Southampton will come into their future plans and what venues they’ll play in future tours.
The Sherlocks’ debut album Live For The Moment is out now and available to stream on all major streaming platforms. Physical copies of the album are available to purchase from thesherlocksmusic.co.uk

amn Sleep Well, at it again with those head bob inducing beats and sleek-smooth rhymes. Tune in and chill out. It’s been ages since their ground-breaking EP and we’ve been screaming out for a follow-up. This track quenches the thirst but ignites that need for more. Sleep Well are a melodic hip hop act from the Isle of Wight by the way - keep an eye on them because they go dark for long stints, only to pop their heads up to release something as sick as this now and again.
opular Isle of Wight singer-songwriter Lauran Hibberd is back, with her latest single Old Head Young Shoulders. Her folk tones and sweet melodies always make for upbeat summery tunes, and this release is no different. There’s some nods in the direction of Kate Nash with this one and even some hints of Lianne La Havas, making for just under 3 minutes of sheer joyous listening material.

fter gracing south coast festivals Victorious Festival and Ventnor International Festival this summer, Bath five-piece Bad Sounds’ latest EP pieces together tracks Living Alone, Hot Head Chippenham and Enough into a glorious mixtape with an intro, outro and skits thrown in between. Although really providing only one unreleased track, Enough, Mixtape One is a groovy, innovative introduction to new fans as to what they’re all about and paves the way for future mixtape releases.
IT’S A SHAME
wedish folk sisters First Aid Kit are gearing up for the release of their fourth studio album, teasing fans of its release by dropping first single It’s A Shame. There’s definitely more of an Americana feel with this one when compared to previous releases like Stay Gold and Emmylou, but those Fleetwood Mac-esque vibes still continue to flow through them. Their upcoming album looks like it’s in safe hands.

ublin-rockers and Rubyworks-signees Otherkin have been about the block for a while now, but OK is their debut album release, being received by praise from Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. Describing their genre as ‘grunge-pop’, Otherkin would fit into a similar category as the likes of Tigercub, VANT and Fangclub. OK is a solid first album release for the band and will do well accompanied by their extensive UK and Europe tour. It’s not particularly experimental nor is it very thought-provoking, but it is certainly up there with some head-banging greats.

f you’re a fan of Jerry Williams, you’ll be an instant fan of Portsmouth based, singer-songwriter Devin-Jade. Super catchy and easy on the ears, Maps is a prefect example of Devin’s ability to pen a song crammed with storytelling, acoustic bounce and dare I say it, romance. Look out for more releases very soon and don’t forget to see her perform live. I’m pretty sure it wont be long before Devin-Jade graces the pages of Fret-Buzz.

bra on the floor, sweat dripping everywhere, moshpits and a bending floor are sure signs of a proper decent gig right? Offucking-course!
before the main act, but no, Freazy absolutely kill it! Everyone seemed a bit apprehensive of this random Island band but were soon heaving around to their captive heavy Indie(ish) vibes.
First up to get things kicking are... Kicks - a bunch of local boys with a guitars, a drum-kit, a few mics and a whole bunch of attitude. These lads brought rock n roll to The Loft for one of the venues first big gigs. Great to see a first act draw such a huge crowd.
Last and not least, the main act - VANT. As part of their preparations for Reading/ Leeds festi’s, VANT played a couple of warm up gigs - the most important one being here in Soton of course. Quoted to be the hottest gig they’ve ever played, hungry VANT fans literally had their shirts rocked off... and more. Playing massive hits like Peace & Love, Karma Seeker and others from their debut album Dumb Blood you get the idea. It was hot, it was raucous and it was loud.
Next up are IOW based trio - Freazy. You’d usually expect after a strong start from the first band for the crowd to slowly slip away to the bar or out for a smoke

t’s been a while since a nationally up and coming band played the Blacksheep on the Isle of Wight, so it was very refreshing indeed to learn that recent Solo signees Wild Front were coming down to play a Bestival warm-up show. Although there wasn’t a big crowd, perhaps owing to the clash with Bestival, the underground vibes of the Blacksheep always make it seem as though it is busy. Opening the night was Isle of Wight rock ‘n’ rollers Coyote Jungle, who must be one of the youngest bands going on the Island. I, of course, am a firm believer that age doesn’t equate to talent and the four-piece proved this by storming through some of their own material, as well as a brilliant rendition of Catfish and the Bottlemen’s Kathleen. Next up was blues-rockers Confed Fred, featuring the ridiculous vocal range of lead singer Keir Hicks. The trio look the part and sound the part, in fact it’s a wonder these guys haven’t been picked up by an nationals. I’ve always thought their recorded stuff doesn’t quite do them justice, so make sure you get out and see them live. The main attraction, Wild Front, closed the night, bringing with them their ambient harmonies and chilled-out rock. It’s easy to see why Isle of Wight Festival promoter John Giddings is a fan and the Blacksheep audience lapped up the quartet’s sweet melodies that have seen airplay on the likes of BBC Radio 1 and Radio X.

T
he Sherlocks are one of those bands who have really had to graft to get to where they are now. In Southampton, that has meant they’ve had to work up the venues, playing at The Joiners and The Talking Heads previously, but this time around, it was the turn of one of the city’s newer venues: The 1865. With no national supports on this tour, opening the night was Southsea indie-rockers Eyes To The Skies. Fronted by the confident Alex Seymour, the four-piece powered through previously released tracks
and some new ones. In particular, upcoming release Glasgow stood out and with a headline set at Icebreaker Festival coming up next year, the band look like they’re finding some ground. Next up were Costellos, who are now real favourites in the Southampton scene. It’s great to see them getting about a bit up and down the country - they’ve got a date in Liverpool in December. Although the audience still hadn’t quite got into the swing of things yet, Costellos left the stage to lots of applause and even a few fans wearing t-shirts of theirs.

Arriving on stage to raucous cheers from the almost sold out crowd, The Sherlocks treated fans to hits from their début, top 10 album Live For The Moment. Had this been a festival, The Sherlocks are one of those bands where you can imagine flares being present. Although this wasn’t a festival, at times it felt like it was with people ‘doing the worm’ in the middle of mosh pits and there was even quite a serious brawl at one point. Needless to say, the Sheffield quartet’s energy carried right through their delivery and it seems like they are only going to get bigger and better.
