LISTEN TO THIS! MUSIC WE’VE HAD ON REPEAT AND WANT TO SHOUT ABOUT
AXGEL HXZE - BACK TO THE WOODS To anyone who is looking for some exciting heavy and lyrical genius, make sure to listen to Angel Haze, https://soundcloud.com/angxlhxze/sets/angelhaze-back-to-the-woods Her new material "Back To The Woods" is something else! It is very raw and speaks about issues that she has faced in the past years, from her love life to her musical journey this is a great listen. I recommend it to those who love pop and hiphop! - JayJay
DISCLOSURE - CARNACAL The debut album from Disclosure was a firm favourite for me way back in 2013. I pretty much listened to it solidly for three months - to the point of being sick of hearing anything by them. Two years have past since my musically induced house coma so it’s quite nice to have a whole new album to get engrossed in. Much the same as the debut, nothing really stands out as breathtakingly different, but worth a listen nevertheless. The stand-out track for me is ‘Magnets’ featuring Lorde - that may be a biased opinion. I really like Lorde - Jake

DEMI LOVATO - CONFIDENT Because sometimes you need good pop music in your life and Demi has it spot on pretty much every time. Her vocals are killer and I’d say she’s one of the most underrated artists ever - Hannah
MODERN BASEBALL They have a new EP out and new album next year. It’s the whiniest emo college rock you could imagine, and if you’re in that kind of mood there’s nothing better - Joe
NOVO AMOR - CALLOW Any fans of Bon Iver or S. Carey will instantly be in love with Novo Amor’s “Callow”. This track is just beautiful, the swirling guitars, mysterious woodwinds, the enchanting vocals, what more could you want? - Rob

Last chance city - new beginning/ new ep Earlier this year a tragedy of sorts struck Last Chance City ‘issues’ with their last Facebook page. That’s almost a death sentence for a band going through a re-brand, losing contact with their audience of 1,000+ blue thumbs, having to essentially start from scratch. ‘A New Beginning’ seems an apt name for their at The Anchor in Cowes - IOW on upcoming EP and their re-birth the 19th of December, we look of popularity. forward to seeing what LCC have to offer this time round. Will they Set to be released on the 14th rise from the ashes - or burn out of December with a launch show completely?

On the 15th October Signals dropped their latest Single and accompanying video - Lungs Apart. Not too dissimilar to their previous release of Trojan from the Facial Furniture EP, this track continues their darker sound heard in Sleep Talk. A beautiful monochrome video compliments the new less chaotic feel they had before, opting for more of a restrained approach to math-rock. Are they still mathrock?

FOR THEFeature GOOD OF VINYL! by Rob Douglas Recently something within the music industry has become increasingly more apparent. Vinyl is making a strong comeback. Vinyl sales of late have been sky-rocketing with a record 1.3m vinyls sold in 2014, compared to 780,000 in 2013, resulting in a 60% increase in sales. In fact vinyl has been doing so well that the UK official charts have started the first official vinyl chart, and Tesco has even begun selling it in their stores, becoming the first UK supermarket to ever sell vinyl. I could inundate you with stats about how well vinyl is doing, but I would rather talk about the benefits of the vinyl revival. Although vinyl’s resurgence may ruffle some feathers (mainly the feathers of those wanting another reason to get angry at hipsters) the return of Vinyl has a
positive impact across the board. Firstly, vinyl has once again become a beneficial tool for musicians. Data from the RIAA (Recording Industry of America) has indicated that vinyl has become more valuable for musicians than free streaming services such as YouTube Music and Spotify. Vinyl sales in the US reached $221.8 million on 9.2 million units at the half-point of 2015, a 52.1 percent year-over-year surge. This then means more profit going on to musicians, giving artists a better chance to make a living of off their music. Vinyl is also helping artists reach a wider audience, with services such as ‘Flying Vinyl’ who print alternative music to vinyl, and ship out 5 vinyls a month to their subscribers. This shows that vinyl is once again becoming a beneficial tool for artists, helping them make their
careers substantial. There are also other reasons as to why vinyl’s comeback is good news for everyone. With music streaming and downloading services such as Spotify and iTunes so readily available, music has become disposable; people hear the music, but don’t actively engage and listen to it. Don’t get me wrong, I fully advocate streaming and downloading services, I use Spotify and iTunes every day, but they are contributing to the death of listening. I am constantly ‘listening’ to new music on Spotify, but not actually listening to it, only using it to fill the space between thoughts. On the other hand, vinyl has the opposite effect on listeners. The whole process of listening to vinyl makes you savour the experience of listening to music
November 2015 //15
more. Where streaming services are just a couple clicks away, the whole process of searching for and choosing your vinyl, taking it out the sleeve, setting up the player, and finally playing your music changes the way we listen to the music. Although the process is more arduous, it makes you appreciate the music more than just putting a playlist on Spotify; you actively lis-
ten to the music. It’s a bit like paying a bit more for a handmade artisan product over a factory made product, because more effort has gone into making the product and you savour the experience. It is a safe bet to say that vinyl is reigniting peoples passion for music. Alongside the extra benefits for
16// www.Fret-Buzz.net
creators of music, and a refreshing approach on the listening of music, there is also another reason why the return of vinyl is good news. If vinyl sales continue to soar then there production of vinyl will increase, and a larger workforce will be required to keep up with production. This
thriving off of vinyl, obviously record shops are doing much better now, but numerous vinyl establishments have opened up such as Southsea’s ‘Pie and Vinyl’; a record store/cafe which specialises in pie and mash. Alongside contributing to the economy, the process of creating vinyl creates little waste, as any offcuts of flawed records are simply melted and pressed again, making it a largely sustainable and eco friendly product. Obvi-
ously vinyl will not fix the economy or stop global warming, but it will certainly help towards painting a brighter future. is where vinyl has a promising hope for the future, as it could have the possibility to benefit the economy, and create more jobs in vinyl pressing plants. There are also small businesses
With all of this in mind you can tell that this is a promising time for vinyl, which is set to continue in the future. Vinyl is back, and it’s good news.

Since your first EP, how This year has been prethave you progressed and ty busy for you; a new EP, grown as a band? IOW Festival, Bestival “We recorded our first EP ‘In My and a tour. What was the Arms’ at Skinny Mammoth Studios and enjoyed the process very highlight of your year? much! As it was our first time recording properly, it really opened our eyes to each others playing ability and made us a lot closer as a band. It’s also spurred us on to improve on the next EP and push ourselves as musicians and to keep writing new material!”
24// www.Fret-Buzz.net
“All of the things you’ve mentioned have all been equally as good as each other! Recording the EP was so exciting for us as we were so proud to have a physical copy of something we love. Both the IOW Festival (4 Performances) and Bestival were amazing as we’d finished the EP
which was ready to sell and it was a chance to get new fans! We also love the whole ‘backstage’ side of things where we get to ride around on the buggies and meet and listen to loads of new bands (from and not from the island) backstage! The tour was great, even though it was only short! We hadn’t gigged off the island much; so going to Poole, Boscombe and Glastonbury was really special for us, to see how people responded to our music and live set on the mainland, which was a success.”
What inspires you to How has your EP been write your own music and received by your fans who would you consider and new listeners? “Well, we’ve had to order a your main influences? “As we all want to make BaDow into a career, that in itself inspires and pushes us to just keep writing! Also, we just love playing together so much. Our main influences have to be Rival Sons, The Dead Weather, Joe Bonamassa and Black Country Communion and more recently, Gary Clark Jr.”
brand new batch of CD’s as we sold out which was amazing! Our fans have been great with helping us out by buying an EP or T-Shirt! The IOW Festival and Bestival at the moment is the main way that we gain new fans/ listeners, purely because of the mass of people wanting to hear new, live music!”
What do you plan to do in the future? Is it BaDow all the way or do you have other careers in mind? “Individually, we all have plans to make a career based in the music industry so it’s all music orientated for us! We all go to university so we have things in mind but of course the best case scenario and what we all really want to do is make a living from playing our music! So yeah, BaDow all the way!”
November 2015 //25
What can we expect from your next visit to the studio? “Big Riffs and big songs! Haha, we’re really excited about this release as we think our music has matured a lot and we’ve put so much into it and pushed ourselves as musicians!”
Where’s your favourite place to record new material? “When we practice in our rehearsal shed, we’ve always got our phones at the ready in-case Sam brings out a dirty riff! But on a professional side of things, we like to go somewhere with a huge room so we can live record!”
What plans have you got for next year? “We want to make next year the busiest and biggest year we’ve had yet! So we plan to release our new material, and hopefully more on top of that depending on how well the first release goes down and play lots of gigs and festivals as well, both on and off the island, and to keep writing and improving as a band!”

MUSIC REVIEWS FOXING Dealer
Triple Crown Records 30th October 2015
Last month we saw Foxing support Tigers Jaw at Southampton Joiners and were blown away by the sheer emotion projected from their live set, opening us up to the world of emo-postrock. At the time we pressed the five piece band from St. Louis Missouri about their upcoming album ‘Dealer’ and they didn’t really give much away, so naturally we jumped at the opportunity to have a listen to this mysterious album before its release.
28// www.Fret-Buzz.net
First impressions we’re ‘whoa this is pretty depressing’ and I guess it’s supposed to be. It’s not truly depressing, more heartbreaking, brutally personal and painfully honest. The album starts off pretty relaxed and calm, building up and up in emotion and grizzle coming to a head with the chaos of ‘Eiffel’ before easing off for the last two tracks. The highlight for me is ‘Night Channels’. It just feels so raw and unapologetic. Followed up by
another highlight ‘Laundered’ following the same kind of theme. In fact, this whole album is a gem - each song hitting the spot. Not an entirely comfortable spot, but it’s nice to indulge in the darkness it evokes. A great follow-up to their debut ‘The Albatross’ make sure to give this a serious listen. Just put it on and don’t bother skipping any tracks - the feels.
bones ever
31st October 2015
Released on THE spoopiest day of the year - this is Ever’s latest EP ‘Bones’. With a release date, name and song titles like these, you would expect it to sound pretty haunting or relatively deathly themed, and you would be partly right to assume that. After all, every mention of Ever ever (so many evers in a sentence) revolves around her having a haunting yet sophisticated style. Which is true.
“Bones” Nice intro track, layered synths with that kind of nostalgic voice - yeah I don’t know, there’s so many different influences evident here it’s simply... nostalgic. There’s a nice unexpected ‘drop’ near the beginning just before the track really builds up into its big sound.
“Naturally” Ok this one definitely sounds Lorde influenced. Its that intro , beat, melody and voice effects. Crossed with the experimental sound of the likes of Gorillaz maybe?
“Home” After building up the pace with the first two tracks, this one takes the speed down a notch with a housey feeling track. Nice and relaxed, chill and deep sounding drum track. I feel like the only thing missing here is subtle but super deep bass vibe boosting up from the bottom. Maybe that’d take it in the wrong direction and change the feel of the EP...
“Halloween” Its the finale to the Halloween released, Bones named EP we’ve all been waiting for. Yeah sweet, It’s got that bass vibe that the last track was hinting towards! Spooky themed all the way, what an end to a fantastic EP. I know, that was a fairly vague review - a few hints here and there, but the point is, go and buy this EP. Like now. Look up Ever on Facebook and follow the links to her Bandcamp - if you’re quick you can order a physical CD, shirts and postcards too with that sick artwork on.

need it to stay
This is a track that shows off everything great about the band and their dirty-alt-rock sound. Mostly fast and frantic with a slowish introduction to the track with bass-line throughout that drives the whole song.
To really appreciate this track, I think it’d need to be one of those long sunset afternoons, super warm with a beer by the beach or something. However, it’s October, so it kind of misses the mark right now. It definitely sounds ‘Isle of Wight’ though which I can get right behind.
At times the combo of harsh guitars and drumming makes it sounds like an old distorted YouTube video - kind of like listening through a drainpipe - maybe it’s just me. However the visual style of the video captures the character of their live performance fast paced, loud and vivid. Definitely a band to keep an eye out for if you get the chance to see them.
30// www.Fret-Buzz.net
Nice and chill, maybe a bit too repetitive over the whole song, but still a valiant effort. Go and sip a whisky lemsip and look through some Summer-time photos and grab a listen, then it’ll all make sense. Seriously check out their 2015 EP ‘Sleeper’ though, that’s nice.

LR E IV IVE WES SACHA/ EVER Fat Fox - South-sea 23.10.15 I’ve walked passed The Fat Fox a million times on the way to and from Wedge-wood Rooms, so I was pretty excited to see what it has to offer, it looks nice from the outside. The inside however smelt like something died under the floorboards. I’m sure its nice when it doesn’t smell like death. Moving swiftly on... Preceding the release of her new EP Bones set to be released on Halloween, this was the
32// www.Fret-Buzz.net
perfect excuse to see what Ever has to offer as a live performance and maybe catch a couple of songs from the new release. I don’t know why, but I was expecting Ever to perform with an acoustic guitar. I’ve heard her stuff before and it’s not like that apart form maybe the acoustic version of Bodies... but anyway, nothing to be disappointed by.
Substituting my unfounded expectations - a couple of tables with a laptop, cables, a mic and drum-pad. An awesome voice, powerful at times, delicate at others, with atmospheric layered synths and a subtle stage presence, Ever played a few old tracks, a couple of new ones from her latest EP and that wonderful cover of Demi Lovato’s ‘Cool for the Summer’.
fans he presses play - a brief hiss of the tape and then beats kick out the PA.
SACHA now. So... is this what it was like in the 80’s? For this set there’s just a table, keyboard and a mic stand. Sounds pretty much like Ever’s set-up right? I guess so - but
instead of a laptop on that table, it’s a cassette player. That’s right, a cassette player.
In a kind of Noel Fielding Mighty Boosh-esque style, he sings and plays keyboard over the backing beat. To start off with the whole situation just felt weird, then he took off his long coat to reveal the most awe inspiring jumper with a dragon on it. It was at this point I threw away all my prejudices and really enjoyed this set. Nothing made sense but that’s ok. It was fun.
To begin his performance, SACHA hunches over the tape player to rewind so he can start. After a strange introduction to presumably his Scandinavian
To finish off he sang somewhere over the rainbow acapella style which... I don’t know... time to catch the boat back to the IOW.

The ordinary boys/ The Novatones/ The Villanovas Joiners - Southampton 24.10.15 Arriving to an almost empty Joiners was sort of unnerving considering the line-up for tonight. Does no one care about The Ordinary Boys anymore?! I thought The No-
vatones were supposed to be good? Who’re The Villanovas?... Eh, I’m sure people will turn up, the ‘waiting for stuff to happen play-list’ is awesome tonight though. The Futureheads - nice! Beer o’clock I think. Eventually the place packs out a bit ready for The Villanovas. Hailing from Bournemouth/London, these young blues rockers are a band to look out for. Sounding like a cross between The Strypes and early The Black Keys, the foursome blend contemporary fast paced

rock with classic bluesy rockish all-sorts. Seriously enjoyed this set and liked their style. The only thing lacking for me was stage presence really. Guitarist Jamie White got right into the spirit though - but the rest were kind of just playing rather than performing. However shoutout to lead guitarist and vocals Brett Smith-Daniels for redeeming himself by ‘doing a Jimmi’ and playing with his teeth. Great sound from these guys, a fantastic warm-up for The Novatones and The Ordinary Boys.
about Southampton itself. What an act to follow The Villanovas and prelude The Ordinary Boys. It was like some one was turning a knob controlling the volume and action for the night, ramping it up and up. If you get a chance, be sure to check them out on Youtube or give them a like on Facebook to see what they’re up to.
Next to venture out are Southampton based The Novatones. These guys are like local heroes! Everyone’s singing along, dancing like mad - some are even laying praise to the drummer. I’ve heard the band name thrown around in conversation as a good local band to see, but I didn’t imagine such a devoted following from fans as this. Heaps of Britpop-rock-punkmod sounds here. Songs about the usual stuff you lads sing about including an ‘anthem’

9 years have past since The Ordinary Boys left us pining for more - thanks of leaving on ‘I Luv U’, really appreciate that - and they’re well and truly back. A new album, the original lineup (plus Louis Jones from Spectrals) and a 25 date tour passing though Southampton! What more could you ask for after such a long wait? It sounds almost too good to be true, but it most definitely wasn’t. They killed it. The tiny venue is rammed with fans awaiting the indie-punkrock storm about to unfold, with pretty much anyone who has a phone un-holstered, slinking to the front to take a snap of the set-list. Excitement and expectation bubbling through the atmosphere, one of their roadies presses play on their silly little sampler as a queue for the energy to explode and the band to jump up on stage.
36// www.Fret-Buzz.net
Preston and the band looked completely at home in one of his ‘favourite places to play’ telling the jam packed Joiners how good it felt to be back here. Opening up with a combo of new and old tracks ‘About Tonight’ and ‘Over The Counter Culture’ the night just kicks right off. Proceeding through the set with plenty of reminders about how they love it here and how long ago it was since they played in the Joiners an actual mosh pit thingy was happening in the middle of the crowd. Stacks of energy throughout the whole venue and tons of great music that everyone here knows and loves - what a night! Toward the end of the sweaty performance, Preston starts lunging the mic stand into the
crowd for hungry supporters to sing back into before the statutory - ‘this is the bit where we go off stage, you yell for us to come back, and we come back on stage part’ - we had to imagine that. No one has time for that to actually happen. So after the pretend encore bit, especially seeing as everyone had a picture of the set-list already, the night came to an end with the massive ‘Boys Will Be Boys’ and a bit of Preston monkeying about by swinging from the lighting rig - why not. Such a great gig with a great line-up. Check out The Villanovas, go watch The Novatones, and if you get the chance, go catch The Ordinary Boys for the end of their tour.
