Tobacco-Free Parks
The Fridley Parks and Recreation Commission approved a policy in 2011 prohibiting the use of tobacco products in City parks and parking lots. They believe that tobacco use is unhealthy and has unhealthy impacts on others. Since City parks are established to allow opportunity for healthy activities, they concluded that tobacco usage in parks is inconsistent with this purpose.
Park Shelter Permits
The Parks & Recreation Department issues park facility permits to groups wishing to use picnic shelters at Flanery Park, Commons Park or Moore Lake Beach. To reserve a park shelter, please request a Rental Application form from the Recreation office. Upon approval of the request, a park permit will be issued. For fee information call 763-572-3570.

City of Fridley Nature Center A Message from Springbrook Nature Center Director - Mike Maher
In the coming months, Springbrook Nature Center will begin construction of a new interpretive center that will feature dynamic exhibits, expanded classrooms, incredible views to nature, beautiful rental spaces and modern visitor amenities. Our design and construction team has worked tirelessly to plan a facility that will serve, educate and inspire the people of Fridley for generations to come. Our budget for the new building and parking improvements is 5.4 million dollars. Five million dollars has been granted to the City of Fridley from the State of Minnesota. The remaining funds have been raised by the Springbrook Nature Center Foundation. Our team is currently working to finalize a design and construction timeline. If construction bids are favorable, this project may begin as soon as October 2015. The secondary timeline will be to begin construction in spring of 2016. The improvements to the building and parking area are part of a larger plan we call the S.P.R.I.N.G. (Sanctuary Protection and Renewal Into Next Generation) Project. This represents a comprehensive master plan to revitalize the seven acre entrance to the nature center and includes features such as a new picnic pavilion, nature-based play area, raingardens, amphitheater and expanded trails. These improvements are being privately funded by donations, grants and in-kind contributions. The uncertainty of our schedule has presented some unique challenges as we look to continue offering as many programs and services as possible. We just completed our most successful summer of nature day camps ever and continue to provide a variety of educational programs. With some changes do to possible construction, we are thrilled to offer our popular Pumpkin Night in the Park event again this year on October 17th from 6:00 -10:00 p.m. We continue to make many improvements to our trails and grounds and look forward continuing our work with area schools this fall. We are thankful for the tremendous support and excitement we have seen from our park guests. To get the latest updates on the SPRING Project, events, programs and building hours, we recommend visiting our new website, www. springbrooknaturecenter.org. For information on how to make a contribution to the SPRING Project through a donation or purchase of an engraved paver, bench or memorial tree, visit www.springbrookfoundation.org.

Great Decisions
The Great Decisions Discussion Program is designed to encourage debate and discussion of the important global issues of our time. Developed by the Foreign Policy Association in 1954, the Great Decisions Discussion Program is the longeststanding and largest grassroots world affairs educational program of its kind. The program provides materials that help people reach informed opinions on the issues and participate in the foreign policy process. A Briefing Book places the thematic or geographic issue in historical context and provides background, current policies and alternative policy options. Photographs, maps, charts and editorial cartoons illustrate the text. An opinion ballot for the National Opinion Ballot Report accompanies each topic so that readers can express their views.

Senior Health & Wellness Activities Did you know
Exercise and physical activity are among the healthiest things you can do for yourself, but some older adults are reluctant to exercise. They may be afraid that exercise will be too strenuous, or that physical activity will harm them. Research from the NIH shows that actually the opposite is true: Exercise is safe for people of all age groups. Older adults hurt their health far more by not exercising than by exercising.

Did You Know
Hopefully you noticed something new in this edition of the Parks and Recreation brochure. We have provided information that demonstrates the benefits of the Parks and Recreation services offered to the residents of Fridley. These benefits could range from addressing health and wellness to increasing economic activity, or from ensuring environmental sustainability to fostering community development. This information is identified with the Did You Know? logo throughout the brochure. Here are a couple examples to get you started: • Recreation and leisure activities can help alleviate depression. Participating in recreation activities provides experiences to look forward to and enjoy. Recreation activities also reduce alienation, loneliness and isolation, all of which contribute to depression. • Stress reduction through recreation can come from group activities that strengthen social ties and the calming effects of desirable outdoor settings. All-inall, being more relaxed promotes improved work performance, better social interactions, and a general sense of well being, all of which reduce stress. • Positive self-esteem and self-image can be achieved through lifestyle choices by selecting recreation activities that contribute to a feeling of control over one’s life. Increasing our skill levels and success at a recreation activity builds our self-confidence and esteem which in turn affects other facets of our lives, such as family and work. Studies have shown that active participation in recreational activities helps to improve our self-worth.
• Self-expression and identity affirmation is positively reinforced through participation in recreation activities. Recreation helps us explore our inner spirit and sense of self, creating new behaviors and a new identity. It is becoming more common to identify with the activities we participate in, seeing ourselves as ‘hikers’, ‘swimmers’ or ‘soccer players’, rather than with the positions we hold at work. • Recreation brings neighbors together, encourages safer, cleaner neighborhoods and creates a livelier community atmosphere. Parks and recreational facilities also help improve a community’s image, socioeconomic status and enhance the area’s desirability. • Well maintained parks and recreation facilities help reduce crime in a community. The presence of park users in and around the facilities is an excellent deterrent. Low crime rates increase property values and help residents feel secure.
The Fridley Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to delivering parks and recreation services that improve the quality of life in our city. We offer enrichment programs, social opportunities and instructional classes for all ages. Need a good workout? Try out the fitness programs held at the Fridley Community Center (pages 13-14). Need something for your child to do after-school? See what we offer elementary kids (pages 6-7) or kids in grades 5-8 (pages 10-11). Finally, our recreation opportunities include programs for kids as young as 3 (page 5) to adults 55+ (pages 15-20).
