Almighty God, help us to know that wherever our journey in life takes us, you are there. Lord, each day of our lives is a journey of promise through you. Help us to put on your shoes of peace and be ready to spread your Good News! Like many of your servants from the Old and New Testaments, help us be prepared for our own journey. God asked Abraham to leave his home and friends to follow His leading. Help us to leave the comfort and security of what we know so we won’t miss out on your plans for our journey. Sometimes our journey with God begins in a way we wouldn’t choose. Joseph was betrayed by his family and was a slave and a prisoner. Help us to keep a good attitude no matter what our situation is. Let us get to know you Lord so we will be ready for the opportunities you give us. As Moses was beginning his journey, God spoke to him through the burning bush. “Take off your sandals for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Lord, help us to adjust our attitude so it is suitable for approaching you in worship. There are times when God wants us to go on a journey we simply do not want to go on. Like Jonah, we decide to go completely in the opposite direction. Lord, help us to realize that no matter where we go, we cannot hide from you. We must be willing to go where your journey takes us. It is easy to try to live our own lives apart from God. Like the prodigal son, we want to take what God has given us and do things our own way. Thank you, God, for searching for us, patiently waiting with open arms to welcome us
back. Thank you for forgiving us when we chose a journey of darkness instead of walking in your light. Saul’s journey to Damascus was supposed to be to stop the spread of Christianity. Instead, through his encounter with Jesus, it turned into a journey inviting everyone to follow Christ. Help us to show your love to others even when we are afraid of them or are not sure of how they will respond to us. The Disciples had an incredible journey walking with Jesus everyday. They were all common people, chosen to serve in a special way. When we are called to follow, please help us to remember that no matter how small or useless we may feel, you can still use us to carry out your work. Jesus is the best example of one who has walked a journey of promise. Unlike us, he knew what his journey would be like from beginning to end. In prayer in the garden, he said, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me, yet not my will, but yours be done.” God, be with us when we are struggling and are not sure of your plans for our journey. Help us to trust in you. With prayer and obedience, let us strap on your shoes of peace and allow you to lead us every step of the way. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Amen. Hymn I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in deepest sin my hand will save. I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Chorus Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain. I have wept for love of them, they turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send? Chorus Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame I will set a feast for them, my hand will save. Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied. I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? Chorus Daniel L. Schutte; Bill Maxwell; © 1981 by Daniel L. Schutte and New Dawn Music, P.O. Box 13248, Portland, OR 97213. All rights reserved. Used by permission
Hymn This is my cry, this is my song You are my guiding light, when the way is unknown and when these sunny skies, turn shades of gray I’ll stay close by your side, as you lead the way. Chorus Jesus lead on, I will follow Jesus lead on, let your love light the way Jesus lead on, I will follow Jesus lead on. Hear now this cry, hear now this song You are my guiding light, for this journey I’m on and when my vision’s clouded, by the wind and the rain I’ll stay close by your side, as you lead the way. Chorus (repeat) Lead me on, Lead me on, Lead me on, I will follow. Hymn I stand to praise you, but I fall on my knees My spirit is willing, but my flesh is so weak… So light the fire (light the fire) In my soul (in my weary soul) Fan the flame (fan the flame) Make me whole (make my spirit whole)
Lord you know (Lord you know) Just where I’ve been (where I’ve been) So light the fire in my heart again. I feel your arms around me as the power of your healing begins Your spirit moves through me like a mighty rushing wind Dennis Jernigan
Hymn In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed an apple tree; in cocoons, a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free! In the cold and snow of winter there’s a spring that waits to be, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. There’s a song in ev’ry silence, seeking word and melody; there’s a dawn in ev’ry darkness bringing hope to you and me. From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity; in our doubt there is believing; in our life, eternity. In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. © 1986 By Hope Publishing Company. All rights reserved. Used by permission.
