FRIENDS ACADEMY

32ND ANNUAL AUCTION

Friday, April 12, 2024

Garden City Hotel

Our Mission

Guided by our Quaker principles, Friends Academy educates our students to discover and develop the best of who they are and who they can become.

Our Belief Statement

We achieve educational excellence by committing to the highest standards of learning and living.

Our diverse and welcoming community is strengthened by our Quaker values, which empower our students to inquire, reflect, and engage in their classrooms, in their neighborhoods, and in the world.

Because when we inspire students to learn and live with purpose, they achieve greatness without sacrificing goodness.

April 12, 2024

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As Maureen and I think about our first year at Friends Academy, the richness of our experience cannot be captured in a single moment or conversation. Instead, it is best reflected through the spirit of optimism, generosity, and warmth with which we have been greeted and which sits at the very heart of our school. While it might take a lifetime to thank all of you who have created this moment for us, we will begin here and now. Thank you!

Of course, each of these qualities also sit at the center of the 32nd Annual Auction, an event that draws our community together to celebrate, reflect, imagine; and to share our fondness and respect for Friends Academy. Our Auction Chairs - Ariel Fish ‘00, Leslie French and Danielle Valenti Smith ‘93 - together with a small army of dedicated committee members, have created a memorable event that will benefit our school and enhance the experience of every student. For your work, we are a better, stronger Friends Academy.

I would also like to extend a special thank you to Helen and Michael Qiu for their extraordinary leadership as the Dinner Sponsors. Your exceptional generosity and commitment to our school community have shown through at every moment. How fortunate we all are for your support and friendship.

But there is more: Thank you to all the families and local businesses who so generously contributed to this event through sponsorship, journal ads, and donations. Your support not only ensures the success of our Auction but also strengthens our commitment to providing a robust, independent Quaker education for students across Long Island and greater New York.

The theme of this year’s auction, Paint the Town Red, captures the spirit and passion that radiate throughout our school community. As we gather to celebrate our school, let’s toast its success by raising a paddle for Friends Academy’s continued prosperity. Each contribution will strengthen the course of our school and create countless opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.

Thank you for coming together to ensure the brightest, most promising future for Friends Academy.

With warm regards,

April 12, 2024

Dear Friends,

It is with great enthusiasm that we extend a warm welcome to you for the 32nd Annual Friends Academy Dinner & Auction! As we reflect on the collaborative efforts that have shaped this year’s event, we are deeply appreciative of the support, generosity, and enthusiasm shown by members of our community.

This evening holds significance beyond its monetary purpose. It serves as a unique opportunity for us to unite as a community, strengthening existing bonds and forging new connections. To our new families, we extend a heartfelt welcome, hoping that this event marks the beginning of many enriching experiences within the Friends Academy community.

Our gratitude extends to the Committee, the dedicated Friends Academy faculty, staff, and students, as well as our esteemed sponsors and donors. Without your collective efforts, tonight’s celebration would not be possible.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Diane Biolsi and Marilyn DelRosso, whose unwavering dedication has been instrumental in bringing this event to fruition. Their contributions are truly the cornerstone of our success. Additionally, we extend our thanks to the Advancement and Communications Departments, particularly Kevin Barry, Jodie Sperico, Joan Bruen, AJ Pegno, Andrea Miller, and Margaret Pegno, for their invaluable assistance in organizing tonight’s program.

Lastly, we express our appreciation to our Head of School, Paul Stellato, and Assistant Head of School, Jen Halliday, for their exemplary leadership and collaboration.

We hope you thoroughly enjoy this evening’s festivities and join us in embracing the spirit of camaraderie that defines the Friends Academy experience.

Let’s paint the town red, together!

With gratitude,

pat tully The Auctioneer

With nearly 20 years of live auction experience, Pat Tully is New York City’s leading independent benefit Auctioneer.

Mr. Tully has raised over $750 million dollars at over 1,400 nonprofit benefit events across The United States and around the world #HaveGavelWillTravel.

Mr. Tully is no wallflower when it comes to igniting a spark in a room and holding the audience’s attention. He is as comfortable on stage with A-list celebrities as he is sincere with cancer patients who share their very personal stories. He works the crowd with ease and grace and he didn’t hesitate when he had the chance to convince Rod Stewart to break into a duet. He has performed live auctions with celebrities including Tina Fey, Jamie Foxx, Adrian Grenier, Kenan Thompson, and many others. When asked about Mr. Tully’s performance, Shaun O’Hara, NFL Analyst and, Founder of The Shaun O’Hara Foundation said,

“You gotta have somebody that can command a room, can add a little humor to it… certainly Pat brings a lot of energy, but I just love the humor he brings and how much fun is had at the event.”

Mr. Tully’s vast clientele includes St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The American Cancer Society, and The Make-AWish Foundation.

Beyond his live auction experience, Mr. Tully is the Co-founder of The Kate Shea Foundation for Leukemia research and previously served as Vice President of Development for The Ireland Funds. Given his deep background in the non-profit sector, Mr. Tully understands the unique challenges his clients face when planning and hosting a benefit event. From recommending starting bids, understanding which donated items are in demand, to packaging items in a way to increase donations and reach target goals, Mr. Tully brings a unique skill set that goes beyond grabbing a mic and pleading for donations. As Bill Dessoffy, National Board Chair of the National Kidney Foundation put it, “He makes it look like he’s part of the organization, which is so key.”

Mr. Tully’s auction talents have been seen on TV, recently guest starring in National Geographic’s Brain Games and he was also a guest Co-Host of the The Morning Blend He also created an auction game show titled Paddle Battle. He will also be seen in the upcoming season two of Ryan Murphy’s Feud: Capote’s Women where he will play, you guessed it, The Auctioneer.

Mr. Tully holds a B.A. degree in Communications from Marist College as well as a Certificate in Radio and Television Broadcasting from the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. In addition, he holds a Benefit Auction Specialist designation from the National Auctioneers Association and is a member of The Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Auction Procedures Bidding

SILENT ITEMS

We are pleased to once again include an interactive wireless automated silent auction bidding process. With OneCause, you can bid anytime, from anywhere at the event using your smartphone. You can bid on items, watch items, and be instantaneously alerted when you have been outbid. At the end of the auction, you know exactly what you have won. No more running back and forth to the bidding tables.

LIVE

Each participant will receive an assigned bidder number. Please raise your paddle with the bid number in plain view of the auctioneer to be recognized. “Spotters” will be present in the ballroom to assist in recognizing bidders. The auctioneer will have sole and final discretion to determine the highest/successful bidder. Any item not reaching its minimum bid may be withdrawn at the option of the auctioneer. All sales are final.

PAYMENT/CHECK OUT

You will have the option of entering your credit card in advance or at the beginning of the night for express check-out. If you win your card will automatically be charged for the total amount of the items you bid on and win. If you do not win anything your card will NOT be charged.

Distribution of items will take place at Friends Academy from Tuesday, April 16th through Friday, April 19th from 8:15 am to 10:00 am and 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm each day in the Withington House located adjacent to the Frost Hall Parking lot. All gift certificates will be mailed following the event.

ERRATA

Oops…we tried to be accurate…we apologize for any unintentional misspellings, omissions or other mistakes. Please accept our sincere apologies.

EXPIRATION DATE OF ITEMS

Unless otherwise indicated, all gift certificates are valid for one year from the date of Auction. Please check the details of your certificate to verify the expiration date.

Auction Terms and Conditions

By bidding on items or services each bidder agrees to these terms and conditions:

1. All sales are final. There will be no exchanges or refunds unless otherwise noted. All items are “as is.” Friends has attempted to describe and catalog items correctly, but neither warrants nor represents and in no event shall be responsible for the correctness of descriptions, genuineness, authorship, provenance or condition of the items. No statement made in this catalog, or made orally at the auction or elsewhere, shall be deemed such a warranty, representation, or assumption of liability.

2. The auction item value listed is an estimate of fair market value. Items have not been appraised unless so noted. The amount you pay above this fair market value estimate is normally tax deductible as a charitable contribution. Please consult your tax adviser to clarify the amount of deduction.

3. Restaurant certificates do not include alcohol, tax, or gratuities unless specified.

4. Payment for items purchased must be made in full on the night of the auction. Friends Academy accepts American Express, MasterCard, Visa, or a check made payable to Friends Academy.

5. You will be emailed a receipt with pick-up instructions. The purchaser must pick up all items at Friends Academy located at 270 Duck Pond Road, unless special arrangements are made. Gift certificates will be mailed after the event. Any item left unclaimed, without prior arrangements, will be sold and proceeds will go to Friends Academy.

6. Friends Academy reserves the right to add or withdraw items, without notice, to or from the auction.

7. Unless otherwise specified, all auction gift certificates must be used within one year of the date of the auction.

8. Each person bidding assumes all risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction. Each bidder agrees to hold harmless from any liability arising indirectly from Friends Academy, their elected and appointed officials, members and employees, the auctioneer(s), the auction company and its agents and employees, the event organizers, sponsors, and/or volunteers connected with the auction.

“PAINT THE TOWN RED WITH FRIENDS” EVENT

John Messina’s Five Star Reviews

I can’t speak highly enough about how John handled the sale of our home. He marketed our home perfectly. He is adept at managing the emotions and expectations of prospective buyers, fielding their questions and comments extremely well. He achieved an outcome well above our expectations. John’s ethics are unquestionable. He was always honest and direct in his dealings with us. Choosing John to sell your home would be one of the smartest decisions you will ever make.

– Laurel Hollow Sellers

My association with John Messina in the sale of my house in Old Brookville was a most satisfying experience. He created a marketing strategy that generated tremendous interest in the property and then helped field the numerous offers that were made in just a few short days. John closely followed the transaction and all his advice produced a smooth and expedient closing, easing so much of the stress inherent in the process. A testament to his experience and expertise. I give him my highest recommendation and was most pleased with his service.
