2 ANNUAL REPORT

Letter from the Director of Advancement

As the Director of Advancement at Friends Academy, it is with great pleasure and a deep sense of gratitude that I present to you our Annual Report for the fiscal year 2022-2023. This report provides a comprehensive overview of our achievements, progress, and the positive impact we have made in our community and beyond.

First and foremost, I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to our faculty and staff, volunteers, donors, and partners who have stood beside us in our pursuit of academic excellence rooted in Quaker values. Your unwavering support, commitment, and collaborative efforts have been instrumental in enabling us to fulfill our mission and create lasting change in the lives of the children we serve. I would also like to extend special recognition to Andrea Kelly for her long-lasting contributions as Head of School and remarkable tenure that concluded this June.

Over the past seven years, Friends has witnessed momentous milestones and significant growth in various areas. Under Andrea’s leadership, we successfully launched a five-year Strategic Plan, navigated the challenges posed by the pandemic, introduced innovative programming, and established the enchanting Forest Program for our Early Childhood students. This program empowers our students to become stewards of the world they will one day lead.

As we bid farewell to Andrea, we warmly welcome Paul J. Stellato as our new Head of School. With 15 transformative years as Head of School at Princeton Day School (PDS), a 970-student independent school in Princeton, NJ, Paul brings a wealth of experience and a commitment to excellence. We are confident that he will continue to elevate Friends Academy and guide our community to new heights.

Looking ahead, we are committed to building upon our successes and embracing new challenges. We are actively exploring cutting-edge approaches, seeking strategic partnerships, and identifying new avenues for growth. As we embark upon the next chapter of our journey, we remain steadfast in our dedication to our students’ education and well-being.

On behalf of the entire team of colleagues at Friends Academy, I extend my sincerest thanks to you for your continued support and unwavering belief in our mission. Together, we have the power to transform lives and shape a brighter future for all. I encourage you to delve into the pages of this Annual Report to discover the inspiring stories, remarkable achievements, and profound impact we have made together.

With gratitude,

ANNUAL REPORT 3

Student Highlights Academics

The 2022-23 school year brought new life in (and out) of our classrooms. Upper School students had opportunites for trips abroad in World Languages and Cultures, as well as Science; innovation has expanded among all three divisions; and we had our pilot year of Lower School Signature Experiences.

Learning Abroad

Instead of opting for vacation weeks, students in the Upper School spent their time on various trips to expand their knowledge of science and culture. Twenty-four students from the Upper School traveled to the Galapagos Islands for a science-oriented service trip. This was the first Galapagos trip since February 2020, and it is apparent that some of the animal populations have increased and benefited from the time apart from humans. Joined by Upper School teachers Jen Newitt, Jeff Burt, Tricia Diamond, Vijay Suthar, and Andrew Geha, the group walked “in the footsteps of Charles Darwin” by observing the environment that led to his theory of evolution. The group hiked up an inactive volcano, visited the equator, tasted delicious Ecuadorian chocolate, traveled to the Bascilica del Vito Nacional in Quito, planted trees, explored an old lava tunnel, and dipped in the ocean for a bit of snorkeling and swimming.

Read more about the Galapagos trip and view photos.

During spring break, the World Languages and Cultures department traveled with 32 students to France and Switzerland and 34 students to Spain, depending on the discipline the students were studying. Notably, on arrival day, students took a historical tour of the Jewish Quarter on Passover, walked to Notre Dame, and visited the Memorial to Deported Jewish Martyrs of World War II. The next day, they took a bus tour of the city, visited the Musée d’Orsay, and walked to the Louvre via the Tuileries Garden before climbing the sparkling Eiffel Tower at night.

The students visiting Spain found themselves in the

ancient city of Toledo, where they visited a traditional sword and jewelry-making shop and stopped by the church of Santo Tome to see the masterpiece by Renaissance painter El Greco located in the impressive historical quarter.

Next, their journey took them for a ride from Madrid to the capital city of Andalucía, Sevilla on board Spain’s high-speed train, AVE. In Sevilla, they had a rare opportunity to experience Semana Santa (Holy Week), take a flamenco class and watch a traditional flamenco performance at Museo del Flamenco. Together, they explored the narrow streets and alleys of historic Barrio Santa Cruz where they had a guided tour through the lavish Real Alcazar (Royal Palace), visited the magnificent and largest Gothic cathedral in the world, and climbed to the top of the Giralda de Sevilla.

Overall, these international trips were a wonderful return to learning in the wider world, and giving each student the opportunity to dive deeper and fully immerse themselves in their studies.

4 ANNUAL REPORT

Innovation Classes Expand

This spring semester, our sixth grade Financial Literacy students partnered with our school librarians to plan for the future. Students collaborated on project teams to conduct research and identify new programs, services, and items that will benefit our Middle School community the most. Each team produced a different project proposal that included a cost-benefit analysis, detailed budget, and researchbased solution. They presented their findings to our library team and administration, who will carefully consider each proposal and work in partnership with our students to prototype their solutions beginning next school year. Solutions ranged from a pop-up library for the Middle School, to a greenhouse where students can study “in nature” during the winter months.

Lower School Signature Experiences

Each of our Lower School students in kindergarten to fourth grade had the opportunity to experience real-world learning and problem-solving. From thinking of 100 ways to celebrate 100 days, to visiting various houses of worship – including the Matinecock Meeting House – each grade had a unique learning adventure. In the spirit of highlighting the local community and learning more about where we live, our second graders focused on the history and beauty of Long Island. This immersive program had students bring their “Flat Stanley” to various locations on Long Island. The work culminates in a video and poster project where they presented specific landmarks, targeting folks on why they should live and work here.

ANNUAL REPORT 5

Student Highlights Arts

Last fall, the Upper School Theater Department invited a limited set of audiences to follow them into a series of stories that explored the haunting and lingering impact of “unfinished business.” Using the storytelling device of immersive theater, a technique that explores space and design to curate a tangible and sensory environment, while focusing on the personal and individual audience experience, each actor spun a web of mystery and, ultimately, resolution. Each subplot was authored by Director of Theater Andrew Geha, and audience members were randomly assigned to a protagonist who, bit by bit, uncovered their truth in search of the viewer’s truth.

For Middle School Arts week, Geha adapted the literary classic Alice in Wonderland to create Shattered Alice. In this story, Alice is played by a different student for each of her famous encounters, something the White Rabbit points out midway through the show. Alice knows she’s changing but isn’t quite sure why or into what. Using and expanding upon Lewis Carroll’s witty dialogue, Alice is faced with a series of confusing riddles she tries to solve, eventually realizing she herself is a bit of a riddle. Ultimately, all of the Alices come face to face with the many versions of herself, questioning her identity, her significance, and her agency in her own story.

In February, a cast of familiar characters took to the stage for the annual full-length winter musical production – SpongeBob: The Musical! With tap-dancing, high-kicking choreography, vibrant costumes, a set that featured porthole projections, live sound, and special effects (fog, bubbles, and confetti streamers), the Upper School cast and crew sung their way into our hearts. From Patchy the Pirate’s interaction with the audience, which included giving out “souvenir programs,” to the catchy all-ensemble numbers, this play was one not to miss.

Finally, full concerts returned in all divisions, notably during the Lower School Spring Celebration of Art & Music. Fourth grade received a standing ovation for their handbell rendition of Africa by Toto accompied by students on drums and a surprise performance from fourth grade teacher Katie Chuchul with her flute solo.

THE FAHEY FAMILY MASTER TEACHER AWARD

This annual award is given to honor teachers who inspire students and create a lifelong love of learning. We are deeply grateful to the Faheys for extending this extraordinary opportunity to the faculty. This award is presented to a teacher who has served the school for at least 10 years and demonstrates exceptional talent and commitment in their overall contributions to their students and is widely respected by their colleagues and students as a master teacher. Finally, this colleague demonstrates over time a depth of character and standard of behavior that serves as a model to the entire school community

We are presenting the Fahey Master Teacher Award to Leanne Loizides, who serves as an Upper School English Teacher.

FRED SMITH MEMORIAL COACHING AWARD

The Fred Smith Memorial Coaching Award was established in 2013 through the generosity of alumni and former players to honor the achievements and work of beloved coach and mentor Fred Smith, who touched the lives of many students as a faculty member from 1959-1967. This award recognizes coaching excellence, guidance, and leadership, as was Coach Smith’s way. The award provides for annual recognition of a deserving varsity coach in boys or girls sports by paying all or part of the cost to attend coaching seminars, conferences, and similar events designed to promote and enhance coaching skills.

We are presenting the Fred Smith Memorial Coaching Award to Sara Baldvins, who coaches Upper School Crew.

Retirements

SELINA COLLIER – 36 YEARS

A committed member of the Middle School faculty, Selina Collier has worn many hats over the years. With steady and unfailing involvement in all areas of life in the Middle School, Selina has served as the Middle School Science Department Convenor, the Middle School Community Service Coordinator, and Eighth Grade Team Leader. Selina’s talents extend to the theater where she works creating and sewing costumes for the MS and US theater productions.

Highly respected by colleagues, students, and parents, Selina is committed to the success of her students. Recognized in 2007 with the Fahey Master Teacher Award, Selina is truly a master teacher who uses creative methods to help students understand challenging concepts. Selina served this year on two search committees – the Head of School Faculty/Staff Advisory Committee, which she co-clerked with Mike Quinland; and later in the year, served on the Director of Arts search committee. At our spring Peace Vigil, Mrs. Collier reminded us that WE can be active in creating peace in our lives. Her remarks were inspirational to all who gathered.

Students and alumni will always remember their sludge experiment and the wonderful Mrs. Collier. At her farewell celebration, Selina’s children read memories of her science classes submitted by former students. To remember this moment, former Middle School Principal Deb Schoman collected the notes and made a keepsake book for Selina along with a photograph from her first year teaching.

Colleague Departures with 15+ Years of Service

At the end of the 2022-23 school year, we said goodbye to three long-standing colleagues who will be starting a new chapter in their careers. Each of them not only were FA colleagues but also parents of alumni. Thank you to Louisa Garry, Kathy Dineen, and Kim Soscie for your many years of service.

LOUISA GARRY – 35 YEARS

A dedicated member of the Upper School faculty for 35 years, Louisa has taught Upper School English and History and held leadership roles as the Department Chair for both departments. Outside of the classroom, Louisa has led the Friends Academy track program, including all three seasons. Many of our track athletes have found great success and have gone on to run track at the college level. An inspirational teacher and coach, her concern for the welfare of her students is exemplary. Louisa has taken a position at the Ross School in East Hampton, NY for next year.

KATHY DINEEN – 23 YEARS

Kathy joined the Friends Academy community in 2000 and spent most of her time in the Head of School’s Office where she supported four different heads of school. Kathy also spent four years in the Development Office, supporting Parent Council events such as the Fall Fair and the Auction. Kathy is moving to Maryland and will be working at the Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, MD.

KIM SOSCIE – 17 YEARS

Kim started in our Lower School as a fifth grade social studies teacher. During her time in LS, Kim was a team leader; a History/Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator; and teacher for second, fourth, and fifth grades. A master teacher, Kim was presented with the Fahey Master Teacher Award in 2020 and this year joined the Middle School faculty to teach fifth grade social studies once again. Kim is moving to Richmond, VA, and will be teaching at St. Catherine’s School.

Farewell to Head of School Andrea Kelly

ANDREA KELLY – 7 YEARS

As the Head of School, Andrea changed the messaging of our institution and created a culture of learning that is truly inspiring. Her emphasis on creating lifelong learners has been transformational. By fostering a growth mindset among our students, she opened up a world of possibilities and opportunities that they may not have previously considered. Andrea has an unwavering belief in the potential of each and every student and has challenged them to strive for excellence and to pursue their dreams with passion and determination.

Andrea worked tirelessly to create an environment where students feel empowered to ask questions, think critically, and explore their interests. Her dedication to instilling a love of learning has created a ripple effect throughout our school community that will continue to impact our students long after they have graduated.

Most importantly, Andrea has shown us all what it means to be a true leader. Her vision, passion, and commitment to excellence have set the standard for our school and have inspired us all to be our very best selves. She left an imprint on each and every one of us, and for that, we are forever grateful.

In appreciation for all that Andrea has done for Friends Academy, the Board of Trustees presented a plaque, which will be permanently displayed by the Forest Program – a fixture of our campus that would not have been possible without her leadership.

20 ANNUAL REPORT
ALUMNI LEADERS (GIFTS OF $100 AND ABOVE FROM ALUMNI WITHIN 10 YEARS OF GRADUATION)

Annual Fund

The Friends Academy Annual Fund is the most significant yearly fundraiser for the school. The Annual Fund touches the lives of each and every one of our students and positively affects them in many profound ways. Unrestricted gifts to Friends through our Annual Fund are the foundation of our giving program. Your extreme generosity resulted in unrestricted gifts totaling $1,402,054.

Gifts by Parents

The support our parents provide to Friends is a key difference maker in defining the financial health of our community. Quite simply, without it, we would not be able to create the unique experiences that distinguish and define Friends Academy. Congratulations to our third and fifth grades for reaching 100% participation. Grade listings are based on the 2022-2023 academic year.

Annual Fund Parent Volunteers

The success of the Friends Academy Annual Fund is made possible through the efforts and commitment of our volunteers. Their hard work and endless energy is nothing short of inspirational. With an amazing “can do” spirit, a team of parent volunteers worked diligently to help espouse the many benefits that our students receive through unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund. We enthusiastically thank our Annual Fund Committee, led by Chair Marc Hudak and Vice Chair Aimee Roti for their incredible leadership.

ANNUAL REPORT 25 ANNUAL FUND IN ACTION

Gifts from Alumni by Class

Gifts from our alumni express appreciation for the many ways in which they were positively affected by a Friends Academy education. Alumni support helps ensure that the lifelong benefits of a Quaker education combined with the uniqueness of a Friends Academy education remain accessible to our students. Our alumni play a critical role in our students’ lives by being positive role models, participating in alumni and school events, and by the many ways in which they proudly carry the FA banner.

Gifts by Parents of Alumni

Many families continue to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to Friends Academy long after their child’s graduation. The financial support received from parents of our recent graduates, as well as from families of those who graduated decades ago, is a true testament to the strength of the extended Friends Academy family! Your generosity is gratefully received and continues to improve the overall experience for our students.

Guided by Quaker principles, Friends Academy educates our students to discover and develop the best of who they are and who they can become.

Our Belief

At Friends Academy, we achieve educational excellence by committing to the highest standards of learning and living.

Our diverse and welcoming community is strengthened by our Quaker values, which empower our students to inquire, reflect, and engage in their classrooms, in their neighborhoods, and in the world.

Because when we inspire students to learn and live with purpose, they can achieve greatness without sacrificing goodness.
