May 5, 2023

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Looking back, I will always remember my first Friends Academy Dinner & Auction in 2017! From the energy, excitement, and our Upper School Jazz Band; to our vivacious auctioneer, the chairwomen, hors d’oeuvres and luscious desserts; and, yes, finally, the dancing – the incredible generosity of the Friends Academy community shone brightly all night long. I recall the flowers, candles, and… jars of spices on the table. Why spices? Those spices served as a wonderful reminder of our Quaker Testimonies, one of which is Community, and the theme of my first Dinner & Auction.

The annual Dinner & Auction theme may change each year, but what remains constant is the celebration of our incredible Friends Academy community, and most especially our children. On this night, I love to look around and hear the sea of conversation and bubbling laughter filling the air, as groups of parents seated with friends show how deeply committed to their children’s education they are and, most importantly, to the excellence of a Friends education.

Friends, on behalf of all my Friends Academy colleagues, I welcome you to “A Night Out With Friends!” – our 31st Annual Dinner & Auction. Tim and I are ready to raise our paddles and don our dancing shoes for one final time, and we hope you are too!

I’d like to thank our incomparable Auction chairs – Ariel Fish ‘00, Jen Tytel ‘05, and Elizabeth Ong Witthuhn ‘01 – who have worked tirelessly and in wonderful camaraderie to ensure that a good time will be had by all. As another tribute to our chairs’ leadership, our numerous Auction Committee parent volunteers have helped to plan a magical evening tonight. I’d like to recognize our sponsors, Silent/Live Auction donors, event volunteers, attendees, and bidders. Your collaboration and coordination is what makes this evening a success year after year.

This Dinner & Auction, my last, will be a bittersweet one for me. I’ll be sure to take it all in and savor every moment that is dedicated to supporting our beloved Friends Academy community. While there will be time for send-offs later this spring, tonight, we celebrate, we connect, and we raise our paddles high to ensure we will continue to deliver on our mission of an unparalleled Friends Academy education.

Thank you for another wonderful year – indeed, a wonderful seven years.

All my best,

May 5, 2023

Dear Friends,

We are so excited to welcome you to the 31st Annual Friends Academy Dinner & Auction! Throughout the planning of this year’s event, we had the pleasure of working with many of you in the community, and we are truly grateful for the generosity, support, and enthusiasm we received from each of you.

A Night Out with Friends is not just an evening that provides the opportunity to give back to the school where our children learn to become their best selves, it provides us the ability to come together as a community to deepen our connections and foster new ones. As always, we would like to offer a warm welcome to our new families, and we hope this event is the first of many where you will experience the camaraderie that underpins the Friends Academy experience.

We would like to express our boundless appreciation to the Committee, the Friends Academy faculty, staff, and students, and all of our valued sponsors and donors.

We would not be here this evening without the tireless work of Diane Biolsi and Marilyn DelRosso, who truly are the heart and soul of this event. For that, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We would also like to thank the Advancement and Communications Departments who helped put this evening’s program together including: Kevin Barry, Joan Bruen, AJ Pegno, Andrea Miller, and Margaret Pegno. Finally, we would like to thank our Head of School, Andrea Kelly, and Assistant Head of School, Jen Halliday, for their leadership and partnership.

We hope you have a wonderful evening and enjoy your Night Out with Friends!

With gratitude,

Thank you to our Committee

Pat Tully

With nearly 20 years of live auction experience, Pat Tully is New York City’s leading independent benefit Auctioneer. Mr. Tully has raised over $250 million dollars at over 1,000 nonprofit benefit events across The United States and around the world #HaveGavelWillTravel.

Mr. Tully is no wallflower when it comes to igniting a spark in a room and holding the audience’s attention. He is as comfortable on stage with A-list celebrities as he is sincere with cancer patients who share their very personal stories. He works the crowd with ease and grace and he didn’t hesitate when he had the chance to convince Rod Stewart to break into a duet. He has performed live auctions with celebrities including Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Jamie Foxx, Adrian Grenier, Kenan Thompson, and many others.

Mr. Tully’s vast clientele includes St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The American Cancer Society, and The Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Auctioneer

Beyond his live auction experience, Mr. Tully is the Co-founder of The Kate Shea Foundation for Leukemia research and previously served as Vice President of Development for The Ireland Funds. Given his deep background in the non-profit sector, Mr. Tully understands the unique challenges his clients face when planning and hosting a benefit event. From recommending starting bids, understanding which donated items are in demand, to packaging items in a way to increase donations and reach target goals, Mr. Tully brings a unique skill set that goes beyond grabbing a mic and pleading for donations. Mr. Tully’s auction talents have been seen on TV, recently guest starring in National Geographic’s Brain Games and he was also a guest Co-Host of the The Morning Blend. He also created an auction game show titled Paddle Battle.

Mr. Tully holds a B.A. degree in Communications from Marist College as well as a Certificate in Radio and Television Broadcasting from the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. In addition, he holds a Benefit Auction Specialist designation from the National Auctioneers Association and is a member of The Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Auction Procedures Bidding

SILENT ITEMS

We are pleased to once again include an interactive wireless automated silent auction bidding process. With OneCause, you can bid anytime, from anywhere at the event using your smartphone. You can bid on items, watch items, and be instantaneously alerted when you have been outbid. At the end of the auction, you know exactly what you have won. No more running back and forth to the bidding tables.

LIVE

Each participant will receive an assigned bidder number. Please raise your paddle with the bid number in plain view of the auctioneer to be recognized. “Spotters” will be present in the ballroom to assist in recognizing bidders.

The auctioneer will have sole and final discretion to determine the highest/successful bidder. Any item not reaching its minimum bid may be withdrawn at the option of the auctioneer. All sales are final.

PAYMENT/CHECK OUT

You will have the option of entering your credit card in advance or at the beginning of the night for express check-out. If you win your card will automatically be charged for the total amount of the items you bid on and win. If you do not win anything your card will NOT be charged.

Distribution of items will take place at Friends Academy from Tuesday, May 9th through Thursday, May 11th from 8:15 am to 10 am and 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm each day in the Withington House located adjacent to the Frost Hall Parking lot. All gift certificates will be mailed following the event.

ERRATA

Oops…we tried to be accurate…we apologize for any unintentional misspellings, omissions or other mistakes. Please accept our sincere apologies.

EXPIRATION DATE OF ITEMS

Unless otherwise indicated, all gift certificates are valid for one year from the date of Auction. Please check the details of your certificate to verify the expiration date.

Auction Terms and Conditions

By bidding on items or services each bidder agrees to these terms and conditions:

1. All sales are final. There will be no exchanges or refunds unless otherwise noted. All items are “as is.” Friends has attempted to describe and catalog items correctly, but neither warrants nor represents and in no event shall be responsible for the correctness of descriptions, genuineness, authorship, provenance or condition of the items. No statement made in this catalog, or made orally at the auction or elsewhere, shall be deemed such a warranty, representation, or assumption of liability.

2. The auction item value listed is an estimate of fair market value. Items have not been appraised unless so noted. The amount you pay above this fair market value estimate is normally tax deductible as a charitable contribution. Please consult your tax adviser to clarify the amount of deduction.

3. Restaurant certificates do not include alcohol, tax, or gratuities unless specified.

4. Payment for items purchased must be made in full on the night of the auction. Friends Academy accepts American Express, MasterCard, Visa, or a check made payable to Friends Academy.

5. You will be emailed a receipt with pick-up instructions. The purchaser must pick up all items at Friends Academy located at 270 Duck Pond Road, unless special arrangements are made. Gift certificates will be mailed after the event. Any item left unclaimed, without prior arrangements, will be sold and proceeds will go to Friends Academy.

6. Friends Academy reserves the right to add or withdraw items, without notice, to or from the auction.

7. Unless otherwise specified, all auction gift certificates must be used within one year of the date of the auction.

8. Each person bidding assumes all risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction. Each bidder agrees to hold harmless from any liability arising indirectly from Friends Academy, their elected and appointed officials, members and employees, the auctioneer(s), the auction company and its agents and employees, the event organizers, sponsors, and/or volunteers connected with the auction. Friends Academy is not responsible for COVID restrictions and policies implemented by participating businesses and donors to the auction.

John Messina’s Five Star Reviews

It is with great pleasure that I write this review for Mr. John Messina. Mr. Messina sold our home and we purchased our new home as a result of his expertise. There is no one I could more highly recommend for any of your real estate needs than Mr. Messina; he has all the attributes of a true professional. He is honest, intelligent, sincere, responsive and a pleasure to work and interact with - for us he gets 110 out of 100 stars. He is the best!!!!

John Messina made an otherwise stressful process smooth and easy. All details involved with the selling of our beloved house were covered right from the start. We trusted his process. John is creative, honest and organized and this showed throughout the sale. He was easily accessible and always made us feel like we were a priority. I would highly recommend John Messina for any of your real estate needs.

To Quote William Shakespeare

And summer’s lease hath all too short a date. Why this is very midsummer madness. But will they come when you do call for them?

Better three hours too soon than a minute too late. They say miracles are past.

So shines a good deed in a naughty world. To their right praise and true perfection! To be, or not to be: that is the question.
