Letter from the Director of Advancement
Dear Friends Academy Community,
As the Director of Advancement, it is with pleasure and gratitude that I present our Annual Report of Giving for the fiscal year 2023-24. This report provides a comprehensive overview of our achievements, progress, and impact in our community and beyond.
Our Annual Report of Giving serves as a powerful testament to the collective efforts of our community, which have fueled our success throughout the year. I would like to express my appreciation to our Friends Academy colleagues, alumni, volunteers, donors, and partners, whose contributions have been instrumental in allowing us to continue to offer an exceptional education deeply rooted in Quaker values and traditions. Your support enables our students to experience a nurturing and enriching environment where they can grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
This past year has been marked by remarkable achievements, from academic successes and athletic triumphs to artistic expressions and community service initiatives. These accomplishments are made possible by your philanthropic support. Your philanthropy has funded scholarships, enhanced our facilities, and supported our outstanding faculty. Your generosity directly impacts the quality of education and experiences we can provide to every student at Friends Academy.
As both a member of the administration and an FA parent, I have a unique perspective on the impact that your gifts have on our school community. I see firsthand how your support enriches our children’s lives and fosters a sense of belonging, curiosity, and excellence. Through your commitment, we can continue to uphold the values and standards that make Friends Academy a special place.
On behalf of the entire team of colleagues at Friends Academy, I extend my appreciation to you for your dedication, generosity, and belief in Friends Academy’s mission. Together, we both honor our 148-year-old history and partner to continue to realize the potential and promise of all our students.
With gratitude,
Kevin Barry Friends Academy Parent

Student Highlights Academics
The 2023-24 school year brought in a multitude of new opportunities for our students. From strengthening our current community partnerships and gaining new ones – to creative and academically stimulating AP classes, there was something exciting happening on and off campus each day.
Growing Partnerships
Each division enjoyed unique partnerships with organizations beyond Duck Pond Road. The junior class invited members of the Glen Cove Senior Center to campus to attend their annual Senior Citizen Prom. This service learning event gives students the opportunity to plan, decorate the space, serve a catered dinner to their guests, and share time with senior citizens as they tell stories about their lives. In reflection of the event, Junior Class Dean Leanne Loizides said, “For the kids, it’s such a moment of growth. How do I interact with strangers? How do I make sure I’m being as polite as I can? How do I engage? The idea of serving dinner before I eat and doing it as a class – it’s a real bonding moment for them.”
mind, investigating new information, and learning from reflection, their teacher Meghan Leonhardt encouraged the students to talk through the experiment, what could have gone wrong, and how we can continually move forward.
Eleventh graders enjoy dinner with our guests
In his last year before retirement, Dan Kriesberg connected his fifth grade students to the North Shore Wildlife Sanctuary and began their project with Shu Swamp Preserve. The project began with a visit last fall from the North Shore Wildlife Sanctuary, which approached Friends Academy to form a partnership that would help advance their education programs. Answering the call, our fifth graders researched and designed an information display for Shu Swamp Preserve. They began by selecting one of the animals that lives at the preserve to research. Working with FA art teacher Ariana Elmayan, they created paintings of each animal. The students visited the preserve three times over the year, which gave them direct experiences with the preserve and real-life opportunities to learn more about the lives of animals. After revising and editing the animal facts, a website was created with the help of FA Dean of Innovation Daniel Mendel and Middle School computer science teacher Clare Nesfield where visitors to the preserve can learn more about the animals. The display was installed on May 24 and was followed by tours of Shu Swamp led by our fifth graders.
Students in Grade 7 traveled to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories for a lesson on genetics and traits. The students learned about CRISPR – a method of genetic engineering – and used it to introduce a glowing fluorescent protein (GFP) gene into colonies of E. coli to make them glow. Referencing Quaker practices and the processes of keeping an open
For fourth-grade, students found themselves with a design-thinking challenge brought to them from Cornell Lab The challenge they offered our students is a real-world problem that Cornell scientists, software developers, and project leads are working on themselves: How to redesign their world-renowned Merlin Bird ID app to make it more kid-friendly. After many months of fieldwork, research, and prototyping, our fourth graders presented their research-based solutions to the Cornell Lab on the morning of Friday, May 24. Their presentations showcased a wide range of thinking, from opportunities to improve literacy and learning outcomes in Lower School students to
technological innovations with new app functions, greater accessibility, and even a new Cornell Lab drone!
Our long-lasting partnership with the local Planting Fields Arboretum has become a staple field trip in the Lower School and was featured on News 12! An initial fall visit to the Planting Fields Foundation certified kindergarten and first-grade students as junior rangers and introduced concepts of hands-on conservation. This led the way for a more involved initiative in early December with pre-k, kindergarten, and third-grade students. The organization asked our students to help them prepare for their upcoming Home for the Holidays event at the Coe Hall Historic House Museum. Using found materials such as pinecones and acorns, the students quickly got to work. News 12 got word of the event and decided to highlight their efforts by interviewing their classmate Kayla.
Enriching and Inspiring AP Classes
In Post-AP Computer Science, Upper School students dove head first into the second-year college course. Individuals who sign up for the class are expected to be both student and teacher, novice and expert. This course changes each year. This year, the class covered data structures and algorithms. Last year, students studied circuitry with Arduino boards, which are little computers. To take the class, students must have taken AP Computer Science and received a score of 3 or higher on their AP exam.
“In Comp Sci, you need to be able to take abstract thoughts and put them into a program and, in this unit, understand why different programs choose one set over another,” noted their teacher Pati Castillo. “To achieve this, we can work within a culture that comes from attending a Quaker school. Students don’t raise their hands, they wait for each other to speak. At the same time, they are good at talking to each other, rather than at each other. And they make space for a classmate who might be challenged to build upon it by themself with guidance and support from peers who at that moment have a better understanding,” revealed Ms. Castillo.
New to Friends Academy, the AP African American Studies interdisciplinary course features multiple strands of science, law, and the humanities. This course is weaving fascinating and powerful patterns for our Upper School students. Throughout the class, their teacher Nailah Moonsammy used a variety of facilitation techniques, like gallery walks,
turn and talks, and triad conversations to immerse students more deeply into the research. “I want to give students a lot of time to talk,” urged Ms. Moonsammy. This approach helps students address questions like, Why did Lincoln issue the Emancipation Proclamation? Did Lincoln favor keeping the country together more than freeing slaves? What was Lincoln’s 10 Percent Plan (and why wasn’t it passed)? A year-long course, the curriculum culminates with an in-depth research project/annotated bibliography per student that will explore a range of topics. Projects span from College Board-approved and student-generated (such as redlining and the influence of Black fashion on pop culture), and even some topics that the College Board removed. A final AP exam caps off the course.
In AP Seminar, a year-long course in the Upper School, students are learning and practicing advanced critical thinking skills, such as research –making sense of studies and data to come up with real-world solutions; synthesis – noticing and using modern relationships to apply different lenses to a problem; concept map analysis – the ability to understand interconnectivity; and credibility –examining the relevance, bias, and credibility of sources. In small groups and individually, students are brainstorming topics that have cultural implications, such as caffeine intake and how it affects the well-being and cognitive performance among high school students and the prevalence of unhealthy food in the American diet. After filtering their research through multiple lenses like economics, ethics, science, public health, socio-cultural, and more, they will learn how to connect ideas and points of view in their teams and throughout the entire class. At the end of the class, every student will have completed two major projects, papers, and presentations. “The more connected your research is at this stage, the easier it is to find connections to solutions later on in the process,” remarked AP Seminar English teacher Scott Hertrick.
Student Highlights Arts
Last fall, the Upper School Theater Department invited a limited set of audiences to be transported back to the 1920s in the immersive production of WAKE: An Immersive Experience. Viewers followed along and interacted with a cast of characters with complex backgrounds, each there to pay their respects and hear the will of Josephine LaRoux, the owner of a small theater company. Using the storytelling device of immersive theater, a technique that explores space and design to curate a tangible and sensory environment, while focusing on the personal and individual audience experience, each actor spun a web of mystery and, ultimately, resolution. Each character was developed by the student-actors with assistance from Director of Arts Andrew Geha.
In February, for the first time since 2020, students from third through twelfth grades took to the stage together for an all-school production of Matilda: The Musical! Beginning the rehearsals with their buddies, Lower, Middle, and Upper School students learned the script, songs, and choreography together as they prepared for this unique experience. With four sold-out shows, this production soared. From acrobatic
silks to numerous special effects – including the consuming of an entire chocolate cake, stretching a child’s ears out five inches, and magically tipping a cup, to staging a pupil being thrown out of a window and falling back down – the production called upon a magnified degree of professionalism from students and adults alike.
“It didn’t matter if you had the most lines in the show or you were someone who picked up programs after the show,” emphasized Director of Arts Andrew Geha. “We needed everyone, and it was a huge team effort.”
Every year, Middle School Arts Week suspends our regular academic program for a week dedicated to exploration, celebration, and arts immersion. Students can choose to participate in the Middle School play as either a cast or crew member –this year we enjoyed The Fantastic Mr. Fox – or engage in a variety of arts workshops which are presented by guest artists and the Friends Academy faculty, allowing students to explore art forms not offered during the regular school program. For this one joyous week, fifth through eighth graders meet new friends, learn new skills, and push their artistry in exciting ways.
Finally, in a stunning display with all Lower School students dressed in FA red and black – we held our end-of-year Celebration of Art and Music! With the fourth graders leading the charge as art gallery docents, visitors were able to see the robust program at Friends Academy.
Athletic Achievements
Congratulations to eight members of the Class of 2024, who are taking their next step in their athletic careers in college (see facing page). #RollQuakers!
LOWER SCHOOL SPORTS CLINIC
Led by our varsity athletes, our second annual Lower School Sports Clinic was incorporated into our Under the Lights event as a way to cultivate a strong community for our Upper School athletes before the competitions began and provide skills and training to their younger peers. Donning their matching t-shirts, the Lower Schoolers practiced drills and encouraged each other to try their best.
BOYS BASKETBALL
The Boys Basketball team found themselves once again in Glen Falls for the New York State Championship. With an incredible undefeated season with notable multiple wins against crosstown rivals North Shore High School and Locust Valley High School, we saw a season of grit, passion, and highlevel competition. The team finished strong and is already planning for the 2024-25 season.
NATIONAL GIRLS & WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY
In a newer tradition at Friends Academy, we once again held several events for National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). Notably, we held an evening event with a dinner and thought-provoking panel discussion led by female student-athletes on the Friends Academy Athletic Student Leadership Council. We welcomed six female leaders in the athletic world to discuss their experiences in a maledominated sphere and gave our students advice on how to achieve their dreams. Topics for the panelists ranged from the correlation between mental health and athletics to role models to goals to the future of women’s sports.

BOYS TENNIS
Our Boys Tennis team had another phenomenal season! With their hard work and determination, they became back-to-back Long Island Champions after defeating the Ross School 3-2. The boys went on to win their State Semi-Final match 5-0 and finished out the season as New York State Runner-Ups.
PILOT YEAR IN GRADE 5 & 6 ATHLETICS
This year we began our athletic teams in 5th and 6th grades. Our youngest Middle Schoolers played home matchups and traveled to other schools including Buckley Country Day School. We had nine sports avalilable including, flag football, field hockey, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls volleyball, baseball, softball, boys and girls lacrosse. At the end of the year, a culminating track meet was held for all fifth and sixth graders.
Class of 2024 College Athletics
This year, we have eight members of the Class of 2024 who are taking the next step of their athletic careers by committing to their sport at the collegiate level. Congratulations to our athletes!

THE FAHEY FAMILY MASTER TEACHER AWARD
This annual award is given to honor teachers who inspire students and create a lifelong love of learning. We are deeply grateful to the Faheys for extending this extraordinary opportunity to the faculty. This award is presented to a teacher who has served the school for at least 10 years and demonstrates exceptional talent and commitment in their overall contributions to their students and is widely respected by their colleagues and students as a master teacher. Finally, this colleague demonstrates over time a depth of character and standard of behavior that serves as a model to the entire school community
We are presenting the Fahey Master Teacher Award to Kathleen Schalk, who serves as a Middle School English Teacher.
AWARD
The Fred Smith Memorial Coaching Award was established in 2013 through the generosity of alumni and former players to honor the achievements and work of beloved coach and mentor Fred Smith, who touched the lives of many students as a faculty member from 1959-1967. This award recognizes coaching excellence, guidance, and leadership, as was Coach Smith’s way. The award provides for annual recognition of a deserving varsity coach in boys or girls sports by paying all or part of the cost to attend coaching seminars, conferences, and similar events designed to promote and enhance coaching skills.
We are presenting the Fred Smith Memorial Coaching Award to Edgar Posada P’26, ‘21, who coaches Boys Varsity Soccer.

Retirements
BILL GARRY P’11, ‘14 – 35 YEARS
Beginning his tenure at Friends Academy in the fall of 1987, Bill Garry became a pillar of the community. Over the years, Bill has served mainly as the Grade 7 Math Teacher but also lent a hand in athletics as the Offensive Coordinator for the Varsity Boys Lacrosse team.
For many, Bill Garry is Friends Academy. He welcomed them, encouraged them, reminded them of their responsibilities, and never quit on them. From the confines of his classroom – where he has taught math to more than 2,000 students – he opened to his students a world of possibility and promise. With that, he made a promise to be there for them.
His history with Friends Academy has become the history of Friends Academy, as the things we prize most – integrity, scholarship, patience, simplicity, equity – he has applied equally to himself, his students, and the athletes he has coached. Too modest to seek the light for himself, he has been a beacon of light to thousands of students and colleagues who could not have found their way without him.
In honoring him, we celebrate this marvelous man who has made an art of the simplest things: respect, kindness, compassion, and the confidence that his students and colleagues will always move into the light.
– Excerpted from Head of School Paul J. Stellato’s Convocation Remarks
Retirements
DAN KRIESBERG P’13, ‘16 – 20 YEARS
Dan began his career at Friends Academy in the fall of 2004 teaching Grade 6 Science and began teaching both Grades 5 and 6 in 2020. Dan also could be found on the field coaching Middle School Boys Lacrosse and in the Field House coaching Middle School Boys Volleyball.
Dan Kriesberg has followed a path less taken and, along the way, has made all the difference. Though his cascading hair resembles a snow-capped mountain, there is a youth and vigor about him that belies his age. His natural curiosity and enthusiasm cannot contain themselves, as even the simplest conversation can quickly turn into a celebration of friendship, discovery, and shared delight. His intellectual and personal interests are so vast and varied, it would be nearly impossible to find a topic beyond his scope.
And yet, possessing this store of knowledge, he remains modest, attentive, and encouraging. Whether his students are assembling bird nests around Jackson house or building paper towers that defy the laws of physics, Dan takes enormous pride in the adventures he prepares for them and pleasure in watching the surprising things they create.
– Excerpted from Head of School Paul J. Stellato’s Convocation Remarks

Annual Fund
The Friends Academy Annual Fund is the most significant yearly fundraiser for the school. The Annual Fund touches the lives of each and every one of our students and positively affects them in many profound ways. Unrestricted gifts to Friends Academy are the foundation of our giving program. Your extreme generosity resulted in unrestricted gifts totaling $1,390,774.
Gifts by Parents
The support our parents provide to Friends is a key difference maker in defining the financial health of our community. Quite simply, without it, we would not be able to create the unique experiences that distinguish and define Friends Academy. Grade listings are based on the 2023-24 academic year.

Annual Fund Parent Volunteers
The success of the Friends Academy Annual Fund is made possible through the efforts and commitment of our volunteers. Their hard work and endless energy is nothing short of inspirational. With an amazing can-do spirit, a team of parent volunteers worked diligently to help espouse the many benefits that our students receive through unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund. We enthusiastically thank our Annual Fund Committee, led by Chair Marc Hudak and Vice Chair Aimee Roti, for their incredible leadership.

Gifts from Alumni by Class
Gifts from our alumni express appreciation for the many ways in which they were positively affected by a Friends Academy education. Alumni support helps ensure that the lifelong benefits of a Quaker education combined with the uniqueness of a Friends Academy education remain accessible to our students. Our alumni play a critical role in our students’ lives by being positive role models, participating in alumni and school events, and by the many ways in which they proudly carry the FA banner.

2023 FALL FAIR AND HOMECOMING WEEKEND
With great joy, we welcomed our alumni home in September and celebrated the 50th Reunion of the Class of 1973 with a special Meeting for Worship and luncheon at the Jackson House. Additionally, wonderful moments were spent together by all classes, especially those ending in 3 and 8, who commemorated their milestone reunion years with faculty and staff.
Gifts by Parents of Alumni
Many families continue to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to Friends Academy long after their child’s graduation. The financial support received from parents of our recent graduates, as well as from families of those who graduated decades ago, is a true testament to the strength of the extended Friends Academy family! Your generosity is gratefully received and continues to improve the overall experience for our students.

Because when we inspire students to learn and live with purpose, they can achieve greatness without sacrificing goodness.
