Philanthropy at Friends REPORT ON VOLUNTARY GIVING 2014-2015

2

MISSION STATEMENT Founded in 1784, Friends School of Baltimore provides a coeducational, college preparatory program guided by the Quaker values of truth, equality, simplicity, community and peaceful resolution of conflict. By setting high standards of excellence for a diverse and caring community, Friends seeks to develop in each student the spiritual, intellectual, physical and creative strengths to make a positive contribution to the world. Recognizing that there is that of God in each person, the School strives in all its programs, policies and affairs to be an institution that exemplifies the ideals of the Religious Society of Friends.

REPORT ON VOLUNTARY GIVING 2014-2015

DEAR FRIENDS,

• Recruiting over 250 volunteers who reached out to parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni and friends across the country • Outpacing the financial aid endowment goal by $2.3 million more than originally planned • Beginning (and completing in January 2016!) the renovation of the Forbush Building and Auditorium a year ahead of schedule • Achieving 98% faculty and staff participation inspired by a challenge match from the Friends School Parents Association And still the momentum grows. This leads me to Newton’s second law, which helps describe the phenomenon that has taken hold of our community during “Community Phase: Year Two.” “Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass. The greater the mass, the greater the amount of force needed.” With more than 3,000 donors to date, Setting the Stage represents a massive effort. Indeed, without those who contributed during the 2014-2015 fiscal year – and those who have since contributed during the 2015-2016 school year – none of this would have been possible. As we sprint toward the finish line of the Setting the Stage Campaign on June 30, we will need as much force as we can gather to keep that momentum going. I invite you to “be the force” and join us as we bring Setting the Stage to its momentous conclusion. Thank you for your generosity and your continued support of Friends School. Best wishes,

Matthew Micciche Head of School

“ With strong support behind us, we launched the Community Phase of Setting the Stage during the 2014-2015 school year.”

All gifts listed in this report were received between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. The Development Office has made every effort to ensure that the information in this report is accurate and complete; however, sometimes errors do occur, and for this we apologize in advance. If you contributed to Friends during the 2014-2015 fiscal year and your name has been omitted or listed incorrectly, please let us know. Thank you.

FRIENDS SCHOOL OF BALTIMORE

I can’t remember an instance during my time at Friends, or anywhere else for that matter, when I have drawn upon my somewhat limited knowledge of physics in order to connect to an audience. I’ve always considered myself a humanities person. However, upon reflecting on this historic Setting the Stage campaign – and specifically on the 2014-2015 fiscal year, as we have done in this edition of “Philanthropy at Friends” – there’s a certain force, an energy, that, with apologies to the scientists in our community, seems almost physics-like in nature. It’s as if Newton’s Laws of Motion have been at work all along, harnessing the vitality of thousands of Friends School parents, alumni, grandparents, employees, students and friends, to bring us to this point in time. It began in the summer of 2011, when our lead donors stepped forward to set the foundation upon which this comprehensive fundraising effort would grow. To paraphrase Newton’s first law, that “…[a] body in motion continues in motion…”, these early leaders sparked the campaign, establishing an ambitious trajectory that set the tone for success. With strong support behind us, we launched the Community Phase of Setting the Stage during the 2014-2015 school year. You’ll read the names of these “Community Phase: Year One” donors who propelled our movement forward detailed on the pages of this report. We could not have kept up the momentum without them, and we certainly wouldn’t have accomplished such remarkable feats as:

GIVING AT A GLANCE We are grateful to all of our donors for their support of Friends during the 2014-2015 school year.

A MESSAGE FROM THE FRIENDS SCHOOL PARENTS ASSOCIATION

4

The Friends School Parents Association (FSPA) is an organization of volunteers who contribute thousands of hours each year in support of Friends School. If you are a parent or guardian of a student at Friends, then you are a member of the FSPA! Through a variety of programs and events, the FSPA works to enrich the lives of students and families and raise funds that further the goals of teaching and learning at Friends. During the 2014-2015 academic year, the FSPA raised approximately $90,000. In its 29th year, the 2014 Holly Fest craft bazaar was once again a great success, raising almost $22,000, with high marks for vendor sales and income. In its third year, Festival of Friends, the FSPA’s signature spring event, broke records with almost $30,000 in income from the live and silent auctions at a casual evening of food, music and fun. Thanks to these and other successes, the FSPA was able to support the School in a variety of ways. The annual FSPA Wish List totaled $25,000, and included iPads and Chromebooks, maker space equipment, a 3D printer, aqua-ponics supplies and other items for every division. Notably, the FSPA committed its second $100,000 for the Mission Fund as a part of the Setting the Stage Campaign, the result of a “$100,000 for 100%” participation challenge to the School’s Faculty and Staff Giving Effort. In June 2015, the FSPA made its first installment of $20,000 toward the fulfillment of that pledge.

Through volunteer manpower, the FSPA also staffs over 20 different programs and activities, including the Family Service Committee (serving the greater Baltimore community), Scarlet and Gray Day (a day of community, games and support for Friends athletes), the Family Support Committee (providing practical help to Friends families in temporary crisis or need), Community Sharing (a way to re-use and recycle sports equipment, party and prom dresses and other items) and many others. During 2014-2015, we enhanced our programming for the Family to Family Network (which welcomes new families to the School), the Family Support Network (which helps provide meals, rides and other daily necessities to members of the school community who are facing a health or other life crisis) and Friendship Families (which offers support and fosters a sense of belonging to a child whose own family is thousands of miles away). Needless to say, it was another amazing year. We couldn’t have done it without each and every parent and/or guardian who gave of their talents, time and resources. Thank you, volunteers! REPORT ON VOLUNTARY GIVING 2014-2015

A MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BOARD DEAR FRIENDS, As we come to a close of another exciting year at Friends, it is a time to celebrate the generous spirit our fellow alumni have demonstrated on behalf of their alma mater. With open hearts, unwavering dedication and enthusiasm, our graduates have given generously of their time, talent and treasure. As Co-Chairs of the Friends School Alumni Association Board, we are honored to represent the greater alumni community and are grateful to have the distinct privilege of working with the Alumni Association Board – a group of 20 individuals who represent many decades of the Friends experience. Together, we strive to build community among Friends alumni near and far and to enhance the Friends School experience for current and future students. During the 2014-2015 school year, dozens of alumni, representing a span of decades, spent time on the sports fields coaching and assisting, participating in community service activities with students and fellow alumni and sharing their experiences and expertise during classes and seminars. Over 50 Reunion volunteers rallied their classmates and helped them reconnect and raise over $245,655 in Reunion gifts, while 15 alumni served as members of the Setting the Stage Campaign’s Alumni Leadership Committee and a great many others helped by reaching out to their classmates and friends to encourage support. We are delighted to share with you that during the first year of the community phase of the Setting the Stage Campaign, over 814 Friends School alumni (21%) contributed more than $509,000 in annual giving and well over $421,500 in 2014-2015 cash gifts restricted for

campaign use. This is certainly no small feat, and as an alumni community, we should feel very proud! This support is surely a testament to the outstanding education we received, the values we learned and the friendships we formed. The 2015-2016 is proving to be equally, if not more promising for Friends School and the Alumni Association. We hosted “Friends in the City” alumni gatherings across the country and offered new opportunities and programs for alumni engagement. We urge you to get involved by attending a gathering, by sharing updates via Class Notes, by reconnecting with your classmates and with the School and by continuing to provide financial support for today’s students. On behalf of the Friends School Alumni Association, thank you for playing an integral role in the advancement of our alma mater. Rosalie Parker ’99 Alumni Association Board Co-Chair

Wilson Taliaferro ’99 Alumni Association Board Co-Chair

CAMPAIGN UPDATE

6

The success of the Setting the Stage Campaign during 2014-2015 was remarkable, and it is our pleasure to share these accomplishments with you. With all gifts going towards this community-wide effort, together we were able to raise over $2.7 million for Friends School, bringing the total raised for the campaign to $21.2 million as of 6/30/15! These gifts, which support the three priorities of the campaign, will impact our students by growing the endowment, creating a performing and visual arts center and sustaining our programs through annual giving. The 2014-2015 school year was an exciting first year of support for the campaign. Construction on the Forbush Building began after graduation in June of 2014, and we eagerly anticipated each new photograph posted on the School’s website as we followed its progress. On November 1, 2014, the campaign kicked off its community phase with a gala celebration at The Belvedere, during which donors heard two extraordinary announcements: that we had received a gift of over $2 million, the largest in the School’s history, and that the School had already raised a record-breaking $19 million. Following the kick-off, more than 250 parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, volunteers took their message to the greater Friends community, inviting them to join them in supporting the campaign. Spring held another wonderful opportunity for our community to come together, as we celebrated an outstanding year of Setting the Stage with a Backstage Pass Sneak Peek into the Forbush Building on May 31st. Guests gathered to enjoy student musical performances and to tour the major reconstruction underway. In the second year of the campaign, 2015-2016, we were pleased to announce that we received two matching challenges totaling $1 million. One was a $500,000 challenge for unrestricted giving and gifts to the Forbush Building, issued by Eddie C. and C. Sylvia Brown P ’84, P’87 & GP ’25 from The Brown Family Foundation. We are grateful to the Brown Family for their extraordinary commitment to the success of our School and the Setting the Stage Campaign. The other was for the Ronald A. Friedberg ’64 Memorial Scholarship Fund, issued by Ozzie and Joe Cowan ’64. This wonderful $500,000 challenge funds a scholarship providing an additional $25,000 annually in financial aid to one or more students of financial need who exhibit theatrical talent or performing arts promise. Reflecting on the success of the campaign this year and tapping into the energy it has engendered throughout the community, the Board of Trustees extended the Community Phase for a second year through June 30, 2016 and increased the goal to $25 million. For those of you who have already made a commitment to Setting the Stage, we thank you and ask you to renew your commitment in 2015-2016. For those of you who have not yet contributed to this historic campaign, we ask you to join the community of givers who are ensuring that the excellence of Friends School continues for generations to come. Help us keep the momentum strong and reach our goal! Tim Hearn ’78 Co-Chair, Setting the Stage

Congratulations to the Class of 2015, their families and the 2015 Senior Family Gift Committee. 2015 SENIOR FAMILY GIFT COMMITTEE

Senior Family Gift Effort The 2015 Senior Family Gift Committee raised $73,583 for the Senior Family Gift Effort. The Class of 2016 chose as their Gift a leadership contribution to Setting the Stage, Friends’ historic campaign. The students expressed support for all three priorities of the Campaign: • Dramatically growing Friends School’s endowment • Transformation of the Forbush Building into a first-class fine and performing arts facility • Sustaining Friends’ excellent programming through Annual Giving Nearly 90% of senior families participated in this effort, and of those, eleven families had three generations of donors in the same family!

Faculty and Staff Inspire $100,000 to Setting the Stage Campaign The Friends School Parents Association in December 2014 presented the School with a check for $100,000 for the Setting the Stage Campaign. The gift was the result of the “$100,000 for 100%” challenge match for the School’s Faculty and Staff Giving Effort. Friends’ dedicated employees gave at record levels, achieving 98% participation by the deadline, just shy of the 100% goal. The Parents Association was so delighted with the response to the challenge that they graciously contributed the full amount.

Alvin S. Chilcoat Math Award

Community Outreach Program – Established 1965

The Alvin S. Chilcoat Math Award is given to a senior who has made the greatest progress in math during senior year. The Richard Clarkson Award is given to a student who demonstrates proficiency in modern languages.

Friends School’s Community Outreach Program provides summer learning and enrichment opportunities to students primarily from Baltimore City Public Schools, at no cost to their families. The Community Outreach Program is made possible through the generous financial donations of individuals, foundations and corporations.

Robert C. Richardson French Award

Band Camp – Established 1993

Funded by the Joan Alma Eckert Endowment, this annual award is presented to the senior who has attained the highest achievement in the study of French.

Band Camp 2015 attracted 42 children from twelve different schools with music-reading abilities that ranged from beginner to intermediate. Working under music directors George Gaylor (retired, Roland Park Public School), John Gifford (Friends School) and Danielle Schmitt (Roland Park Public School), students develop their individual skills while learning the nuances of performing in concert. Over past years the instrumentation has been standard concert band instrumentation of woodwinds, brass and percussion. Band Camp culminates with an outdoor concert for family and friends held on the School grounds.

Richard Clarkson Award

Bliss Forbush Award

The Bliss Forbush Award is given to a senior who best exemplifies Quaker ideals.

Superkids Camp at Friends – Established 1994

Developed to enhance and maintain reading and math skills over the summer, Superkids offers rising second, third and fourth graders the opportunity to participate in reading intervention activities supplemented with a lively mix of free play and cultural outings. Middle Grades Partnership – Established 2005

Funded by the Baltimore Community Foundation, this partnership between public and private schools provides summer learning opportunities for motivated students enrolled in Baltimore City Public middle schools. Since 2010 Friends School has partnered with the ConneXions and Hampstead Hill Academies to help prepare students to thrive in Baltimore City’s competitive high schools. The partnership provides opportunities for public and private school teachers and administrators to work together and learn from one another, with a common goal of identifying and delivering the best set of ingredients for student preparation — curriculum, professional development and community education.
