Philanthropy at Friends REPORT ON VOLUNTARY GIVING 2012-2013

MISSION STATEMENT Founded in 1784, Friends School of Baltimore provides a coeducational, college preparatory program guided by the Quaker values of truth, equality, simplicity, community and peaceful resolution of conflict. By setting high standards of excellence for a diverse and caring community, Friends seeks to develop in each student the spiritual, intellectual, physical and creative strengths to make a positive contribution to the world. Recognizing that there is that of God in each person, the School strives in all its programs, policies and affairs to be an institution that exemplifies the ideals of the Religious Society of Friends.

DEAR FRIENDS, As the pages in this report will attest, Friends is fortunate to have a remarkable collection of individuals and families who believe deeply in what we do, and who demonstrate their faith in us through their generous financial contributions. In educational leadership circles, my colleagues and I often find ourselves asking:

• Dutiful donors were taught from early on — usually by their parents — the importance of giving back to institutions whose missions align with their values. • Grateful givers, on the other hand, draw their primary motivation from a sense of appreciation for what they or their family members have received from their time at Friends. • Wise investors see the long-term value of a Friends education: namely, to nurture the kinds of morally centered leaders, creative and vigorous thinkers, and passionate advocates that our society will need as we confront the complex issues that lie ahead. They see their financial support of the School as an investment in our collective future. Connecting these rationales is a fundamental belief in the value of our School’s mission and its impact on the world. For those of us charged with carrying out that mission, the generous financial support we receive from the Friends School community — current families as well as graduates of the School and their families — is a powerful affirmation of the work to which we’ve dedicated our professional lives. Each day, extraordinary, life-changing experiences are taking place on our campus, as they have for the past 230 years of our School’s history. And just as in those earlier times, these experiences are the result of a dynamic partnership among a variety of individuals who share one common belief — that the world truly needs what our children can do. I am grateful to all of our partners in this endeavor: the teachers who lovingly challenge their students to realize their potential, the staff who support their work in so many ways, the parents who make the financial sacrifices necessary to provide their children with a Friends education, and the thousands of donors who, each for his or her own reason, manifest their dedication to our School through their giving. We couldn’t do it without you. Best wishes,

Matthew Micciche Head of School

Matthew Micciche

This question, of course, is fraught with urgency and importance, as charitable giving is the lifeblood of our schools. Without it, we simply cannot accomplish our missions. While there is no single answer, when I reflect on the conversations I’ve had with various donors during my eight years as Head, three general categories of Friends School contributors come to mind: the dutiful donors, the grateful givers, and the wise investors.

A MESSAGE FROM THE FRIENDS SCHOOL PARENTS ASSOCIATION FSPA MISSION

The Friends School Parents Association (FSPA) would like to thank its many volunteers for their outpouring of support during the 2012-2013 academic year. Hundreds of volunteers generated thousands of man-hours. Their generous gifts of time and talent helped us to raise over $100,000 and successfully launch two new fundraising endeavors: The eco-friendly Growing Green Bulbs, which replaced giftwrap sales in the fall, and the first-ever Festival of Friends, which debuted in April. This evening of food, fun, music, and silent and live auctions of student art and services was a huge success, celebrating the best of our community and bringing people together in a convivial atmosphere.

• Instill and achieve a sense of community among parents and guardians, faculty, adminstration, students, trustees and staff by cooperating in different capacities to enrich the lives of the children. • Provide a structure that allows parents to become more involved in the community and advance the mission of the School.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI BOARD As I look back on my three years as Chair of the Friends School Alumni Board, it is with great fondness. The Alumni Board is an active group of volunteers, made up of 20 men and women representing four decades at Friends. We have helped to organize such popular events as the Tom LaMonica ’67 Alumni Barbeque at Scarlet and Gray Day, the 100 Nights Dinner for graduating, seniors, and, of course, Alumni Weekend.

• The Alumni Board had 100% Annual Fund participation, totaling $7,508. • Reunion classes collectively raised $264,754 in both unrestricted and endowment gifts.

Gifts from alumni are a testament to the quality of the education we received, the relationships we fostered, and the experiences we shared at Friends. I invite all alumni to attend a gathering, connect with your classmates and School, and make a gift of any size to show your support. On behalf of the Friends School Alumni Board, thanks for your support. It’s been a pleasure to lead this group of committed and enthusiastic volunteers. Lucien Walsh ’88 Alumni Board Chair 2011-2013

• Nearly 730 Friends School alumni (18%) contributed $476,544.

In addition to these community building programs, the Board has rallied to help the School in its ongoing fundraising efforts. Friends relies on the generous support of all of its constituents, including alumni, to help the School provide the quality education that we enjoyed as students. I continue to be amazed by the generous and consistent support of our graduates. Among the highlights in 2012-2013:

A place where every child can thrive. 6

GIVING CLUBS We are indebted to the many individuals, families, corporations and foundations who give generously to Friends School each year, and are happy to recognize the following donors in our leadership gift clubs. The listing here acknowledges comprehensive giving to the School, regardless of allocation, during the 2012-2013 academic year (July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013).

• Parent of Ryan S. Reed ‘95 • Former Trustee • Member, Circle of Friends • Reunion Volunteer “While attending Friends, I found the School to be caring and challenging, and it provided scholastic and athletic opportunities that I would not have had at a large high school. The School’s ethical approach to student life was a great lead to my next learning experience, Washington and Lee University. I continue to support Friends because I believe it is a unique school. It provides the opportunity for all to appreciate working and socializing with a diverse student body. The reputation of excellent academics continues. It ‘feels good’ being on campus, no matter when one graduated.”

Colin E. Fowler ’13 • Student Representative, Board of Trustees 2012-2013 “As I head into the real world of college and beyond, I am increasingly aware of all that Friends has done for me and my classmates. I attended Friends for 14 years, and during that long stretch of time, I took part in many activities unique to Friends. From Scarlet and Gray Day to choral concerts, from Earth Day to lively classroom discussions and even Meeting for Worship, my education was distinctively Friends. Friends allowed me to grow and thrive as a learner, thinker and person. I feel it is necessary to give back to the School that has shaped who I am. I know my Annual Fund donation will help form the futures of students who will walk the halls of this special institution.”

their gifts to the general non-endowed Friends School Mission Fund. The class raised $7,889 of the services auction, a mulch sale, and concession sales from Scarlet and Gray Day and Hollyfest. • A Pergola for the Middle School Pick-Up Area and Solar Panel Installation The installation of solar panels on campus will further Friends’ green initiative, reduce the School’s carbon footprint and offset energy costs. In addition, it is hoped that the installation and monitoring of the system will provide educational opportunities across campus. The pergola, upon which these panels will be installed, will provide shelter and curbside light in front of the Middle School.

Katherine Gladstone Windsor ’85 • Alumna • Member, Circle of Friends “I give to the School because I know that I stand on the shoulders of others. My experience at Friends was possible in great part because of the generosity of others. It is a pleasure to be able to do the same for today’s students through my own gift to the Annual Fund. I have also joined the Circle of Friends by making a planned gift. This gift will ultimately be paid by my estate and allows me to document a more generous commitment to the School than I can at this point in my life. It is satisfying to know that I will play a part in the future of Friends.”

Of all the independent schools in Baltimore, I believe that Friends is the one that enables and guides students to prepare for a future they begin to see when they look within themselves. The curriculum, athletics, arts education and public service activities all combine to help students nurture their own identities, and then, find a role for themselves in the world. Look at the diversity of professions and contributions among Friends alumni and you will readily see the proof of that statement. It is with pride that I am able to observe that the current campus has come far since I attended school, while the spirit of Friends is recognizably 410.649.3200

the same. I give to Friends to help the School maintain its position as one of the leading

Alvin S. Chilcoat Math Award

Community Outreach Program – Established 1965

The Alvin S. Chilcoat Math Award is awarded to a senior who has made the greatest progress in math during senior year.

The Richard Clarkson Award is awarded to a student who demonstrates proficiency in modern languages.

Friends School’s Community Outreach Program provides summer learning and enrichment opportunities to students primarily from Baltimore City Public Schools, at no cost to their families. The Community Outreach Program is made possible through the generous financial donations of individuals, foundations and corporations.

Robert C. Richardson French Award

Band Camp – Established 1993

Funded by the Joan Alma Eckert Endowment, this annual award is presented to the senior who has attained the highest achievement in the study of French.

Band Camp 2013 attracted some 47 students from nine different Schools, entering grades six through nine, whose music-reading skills ranged from beginner to intermediate. Working under music directors George Gaylor (retired, Roland Park Public School), John Gifford (Friends School) and Danielle Schmitt (Roland Park Public School) students develop their individual skills while learning the nuances of performing in concert. Over past years the instrumentation mix has included the usual woodwinds and brass, an oboe, a bassoon, a euphonium, and two French horns. Band Camp culminates with an outdoor concert for family and friends held on the School grounds.

Superkids Camp at Friends – Established 1994

Developed to enhance and maintain reading skills, Superkids offers rising second and third graders focused reading intervention activities supplemented with a lively mix of free play and cultural enrichments, including field trips to local farms, museums, parks and nature centers. In 2012, 60 children were enrolled in the program. A total of 65 students were invited to participate in 2013.

REPORT ON VOLUNTARY GIVING

The Frances H. Bartley Fund was established by a grant from the Island Fund in the New York Community Trust at the time of the anonymous donor’s 50th Reunion, to support the production of American musicals and other student musical performances at Friends.

The Class of 2006 Student Travel Fund

The John G. Griffith ‘81 Fund for Student Outreach

The Class of 2006 Student Travel Fund was established by the parents, grandparents, friends and members of the Class of 2006. This endowment fund will provide financial assistance to Upper School students who wish to travel on a School-sponsored academic trip, and who have demonstrated financial need.

Established by the Class of 1981 on the occasion of their 30th Reunion, The John G. Griffith ’81 Fund for Student Outreach honors the memory of a beloved classmate and friend. A brilliant doctor, John oversaw more than 50 faculty and staff members as director of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Fibroid Center, but his volunteer work with a medical missionary group in Central Mexico, improving the lives of women, transformed him.
