Dear Friends, This Annual Report describes the finances of Friends’ Central and speaks to the extraordinary community that supports our School each year. Our strong financial position is a testament to the care and accomplishment of so many who see FCS as an essential part of their lives and therefore want to give back in myriad ways. So much important work took place during the 2017-2018 school year – in our classrooms, on our playing fields, and in our Meeting Room. No single “highlight reel” could possibly capture all of the excitement, but here are several notable moments to consider: • W e completed the renovations of Shallcross Hall, which had previously been largely unchanged since its opening in 1981. It now boasts a new dining hall, gallery, and entrance. Upgrades include a Teaching Kitchen, supported by a challenge grant we received from the Edward E. Ford Foundation, which we successfully matched. • E xpansive strides have been taken towards making our campuses more sustainable, as detailed in the spring 2018 issue of Quaker Works. Improvements included LED bulbs, solar panels, replacement of HVAC equipment, and more. • T he Long Range Planning Committee of the Board of Trustees made substantial progress on a new Strategic Plan. • T he first full year of The Ulmer Family Light Lab has transformed teaching and learning on the Lower School campus. • A s of June 30, 2018, the School’s endowment has surpassed $27,000,000, the highest total in Friends’ Central’s history. • I n addition to a number of generous gifts to support the Shallcross Hall project, and faculty professional development and financial aid, the 2017-2018 year saw the Friends’ Central Fund – our most important fundraising, year-in and year-out – increase over the previous year. The information that follows details the financial and volunteer commitments so many have made to Friends’ Central over the past year, and yet it barely begins to capture the passion that runs so deeply at our school. On behalf of our entire community, I extend my deepest appreciation for all of the ways you have supported the School.

FCS Endowment Tops $27,000,000 Friends’ Central has been in an enviable financial state for many years, with limited debt and a strong endowment, currently over 27 million dollars, exceeding many of our peer schools. What is endowment? It’s a special reserve of money whose principal is held in perpetuity, with the nonprofit organization using a percentage of the earnings of the endowed funds. Gifts to endowment fall into two categories: unrestricted, where the donor has made no stipulations on the use of the earnings of the gift and those earnings can be used for general operating expenses; or restricted, where the donor made a stipulation on the use of earnings of the fund. Examples of the latter are endowment funds for financial aid or faculty salaries. Most independent schools have an endowment, designed to provide annual income to be used each year and in the future to help run the school. The financial goal of an endowment is to be predictable—to provide roughly the same level of income each year, while also growing to keep pace with inflation. Some donors create endowment funds for specific purposes. FCS is both legally and ethically bound to honor the donors’ wishes. For example, if a donor created a scholarship fund, the School cannot use this fund for any other purpose, no matter how worthy. The Trustees employ a strict spending policy that preserves the size of the endowment for the future (currently 5% of the rolling three-year average). Donors expect their gifts to be protected and to create a steady income for the school year after year. Friends’ Central currently has 71 endowment funds. Of those, 37 are restricted to financial aid and 13 are restricted for other purposes (such as faculty salaries or professional development). During the last school year, the FCS endowment added approximately $1,300,000 to the operating budget. Thanks to all of those who have created a legacy to benefit generations of students. u

Shallcross Dining Hall and Gallery Open

The first of three vibrant murals evoking past and present student life with photos of alumni/ae and current students has been installed in the Dining Hall.

Grade 5 students on a tour of the newly renovated Dining Hall

A completely renovated Dining Hall opened during the summer of 2018, marking the culmination of a great deal of effort by many members of the Friends’ Central community. While the Dining Hall was the most visible and complicated part of the project, there were many other improvements to Shallcross Hall. The front entrance of Shallcross Hall was replaced, providing more shelter for students waiting for their rides, while also creating a warmer, more inviting space. The art gallery offers a much improved display space for the visual arts. The Meeting Room saw the replacement of seat padding and carpeting. New sound and light equipment was installed for theater productions, and a sound studio was added on the ground floor. The new dining space is spectacular and will allow for improved food choices and varied seating arrangements, as well as a Teaching Kitchen, an innovative new approach to learning about food. Students and faculty spent the 2017-2018 school year dining in a temporarily repurposed Rex Gym, eating food provided by the cafeteria staff working out of a mobile kitchen. Students braved the conditions with typical good humor, dubbing the space “The Rexateria.” Above, the Dining Hall under construction

BLACKBURN SOCIETY

Eliza E. Blackburn ’22

Friends’ Central students have benefited from the foresight of the many members of the community who have made provisions in their estates to support the School. The latest of these gifts came from the estate of Stephanie Koenig ’70, who passed away in 2016. A loyal and generous donor to FCS, Stephanie’s legacy gift will help the School for many years to come. Stephanie was a member of the Blackburn Society, named in honor of Eliza E. Blackburn ’22 and her family. Their estate gift helped make possible the purchase of the Lower School campus and establish the Blackburn enhancement, which supports faculty salaries. Friends’ Central has received more than $14,000,000 in planned gifts, each of which has been extremely beneficial to the School. Estate gifts can be structured in many ways, a number of which can provide immediate tax benefits and long-term income. Three common options to consider are: • BEQUEST You can make a bequest to Friends’ Central by including language in your will or living trust leaving a portion of your estate to the School, or by designating Friends’ Central School as a beneficiary of your retirement account or life insurance policy. • CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY Friends’ Central works with Friends Fiduciary Corporation to help with the transfer of assets to the School, allowing you or a beneficiary to receive income for life.

Friends’ Central Fund What is the Friends’ Central Fund (our Annual Fund)? The Friends’ Central Fund, our School’s Annual Fund, is crucial to Friends’ Central’s success every year. Funds go immediately into the School’s budget to support the ongoing operations of the School. Where does the money from tuition and philanthropy go? The largest aspect of the School’s budget is the PEOPLE! Seventy-nine percent of the budget is spent on people— salaries and benefits for the faculty and staff who make all the good things happen at Friends’ Central. The remainder of the budget is spent on curricular and extracurricular programs, financial aid, operations, and the physical plant at both campuses. Can a Friends’ Central Fund gift be designated to a particular area? Friends’ Central offers six areas within the School budget for gift designation: Greatest Current Need, Student Programs, Arts, Athletics, Faculty and Staff Retirement and Support, and Financial Aid. Why raise funds for financial aid? Financial aid benefits the entire school community. Tuition assistance helps create a talented and diverse peer group, exposing all students to multiple perspectives and preparing students to live and work in an increasingly global society. Financial aid is thus a critical component of academic excellence both for individuals and for the School as a whole. Who is asked to give to the Annual Fund? Everyone who is part of the Friends’ Central community— current and past parents, alumni/ae, grandparents, Trustees, faculty, staff, and friends of the School—is asked to participate in the Friends’ Central Fund. There is a strong tradition of giving at Friends’ Central. Each

generation has played a part in ensuring that future students are able to obtain an outstanding education. Contributions are a continuation of a legacy of support and generosity. Should I give if I receive tuition assistance? Even though many families make financial sacrifices to pay tuition, it remains important for every member of the Friends’ Central community to participate in the Friends’ Central Fund at some level. Making a donation to the Friends’ Central Fund has no negative impact on financial aid, and any amount is welcome and appreciated. What are leadership gifts? Leadership gifts ($1,845 and upwards) help to ensure the long-term strength and sustainability of the School. Leadership gifts are crucial to the success of the Friends’ Central Fund. In 2017-2018, gifts at this level represented 60 percent of the total amount raised. Can small gifts make an impact?! Every gift makes a difference. Gifts to the Friends’ Central Fund last year ranged from $5 to $25,000. Consider this: last year, the School received over 600 gifts of $100 or less, totaling almost $50,000! Seriously? Participation matters? Participation matters because it shows dedication to the Mission and Vision of Friends’ Central School. Participation generates enthusiasm and encourages others to join in celebrating and supporting the School. It makes a difference every day to every facet of our students’ experience. The School’s financial strength is dependent upon all members of the community. Also, foundations, grant-making institutions, and corporations look at participation as an indicator of support from the community when making decisions about funding.

What matters most is simply the act of giving. Thank you for your support this year! 16

GRATITUDE JAR FULL! Our Giving Tuesday 2018 goal was to raise 120 gifts to the Friends’ Central Fund in honor of our 120 current faculty members, along with 120 thank-you notes to them. Not only did we meet our fundraising target, but Middle and Upper School students also blew past our thank-you goal, writing 195 thank-yous to teachers, coaches, and staff – filling up the “Gratitude Jar” pictured above. Thank-you messages from students to their teachers included: “ I am thankful for him because he cares about us as people and not just as students.” “ She always makes me feel like I can do anything, and she makes me love math. She’s just, all around, the best teacher and person.” “ Thank you for your constant patience and help with my homework. You always know how to help me when I’m stressed out.” “ You have taught me so much and given me so many wonderful opportunities, and I’m so grateful! Looking forward to more years of fun and learning in your classroom and on stage!”

2017-2018 GREEN CLUB Thank you to the members of the “Green Club” who gave early in the fall, online or in person, ensuring that they would receive no paper solicitations. Giving early also allowed the School to put the funds immediately to work for programs and activities in the current school year. To see a list of Green Club Donors, visit friendscentral.org/2018greenclub. If you are interested in “giving green” in the future, please email Kim Emmons-Benjet at kbenjet@friendscentral.org.
