Letter from the Head of School Dear Friends, I am delighted to share with you this issue of Quaker Works magazine, which is, in equal parts, a celebration of our last school year and an introduction to the 2015-2016 school year. Friends’ Central is off to a great start. From plays to sports teams, to the Harvest Show, the Makerspaces, service projects, and most importantly, their classrooms, our students are learning, growing, and excelling with joy and energy. If you are reading this, you, too, are engaging in the life of Friends’ Central School, and I thank you. Each school year, Friends’ Central lifts up one of the Quaker testimonies for an all-school exploration; this year, our focus is on Community. This seems perfectly fitting, as several of our goals, programs, and projects for the year will transform our school community in important ways. For example: • Our All-School Diversity Board has supported the newly formed “Parents for Diversity” group, which in turn, is generating a growing number of parent affinity groups. • Friends’ Central has engaged Quaker leaders Irene McHenry and Ginny Christensen to lead our community in a process called Appreciative Inquiry, which will document institutional strengths to further inform our next long-range plan. • We are moving forward with renovation plans on both campuses. At the Lower School, we are transforming the carriage house into the Light Lab, comprising four distinct studios designed to expand and facilitate our hands-on explorations in science, art, robotics, woodworking, filmmaking, and more! On the City Avenue campus, we are excited about our plans to renovate Shallcross Hall into a true community-building student center, including a redesigned dining experience. (Read more about these projects on pages 12 and 13.) • We are continuing our tradition of inviting scholars to campus and, notably, will welcome Asali Solomon of Haverford College and David Reich of Harvard University this year as our Distinguished Lecturers. As always, their lectures are free and open to the public. Please visit friendscentral.org/lectures for more details. Our year began with the papal visit to Philadelphia. While here, Pope Francis honored Quakers with the following, “The Quakers who founded Philadelphia were inspired by a profound evangelical sense of the dignity of each individual and the ideal of a community united by brotherly love. This conviction led them to found a colony which would be a haven of religious freedom and tolerance. That sense of fraternal concern for the dignity of all, especially the weak and the vulnerable, became an essential part of the American spirit.” I hope you are getting the sense that 2015-2016 will be a year to remember. Please stay in touch and stay tuned!

Lower School Garden Raising The Lower School community came together for a Garden Raising in April to expand on the current garden. Activities included raising a deer fence, installing wire mesh beneath the soil to keep out rodents, planting fruit trees, building a composting system, and preparing a pumpkin patch.

All-School Assembly All three divisions of the School gathered in mid-April for an All-School assembly to reflect on the Quaker testimony of Integrity and to recognize the various transitions happening among us – the fifth grade preparing to move up to Middle School, the eighth grade readying for Upper School, seniors looking to college and beyond, and three beloved staff and faculty members (Christine Ramsey, Doug Ross, and Marie Cecchine) who retired at the end of the 2014-2015 school year.

Rube Goldberg Comes to FCS

Grade 2 Notable People

FCS hosted the first-ever Rube Goldberg Machine Contest in March. The event was a great success, with middle and high school teams from across the Philadelphia region competing to build the best Rube Goldberg Machine that completed the task of erasing a chalkboard.

In March, the second grade held its annual Notable People Convention. Each student dressed up as the notable person he or she had been studying since January. Parents and teachers asked the students questions to try and guess which “notable people” they were.

FCS was represented by our own Middle School team, who put in countless hours of work on their Rube Goldberg Machine, and it showed, as their machine performed its task flawlessly at the contest! For their efforts, our Middle Schoolers won the Dow Chemical Award for Most Innovative Step for their Coke and Mentos Step.

Summer Teaching Experience in Ghana Friends’ Central Senior Nate Guerra was one of four high school students in the country to win a scholarship to spend three weeks last summer as a volunteer teacher at Heritage Academy, a K-12 school in a village in Ghana. Nate learned about Heritage Academy when he attended the Quaker Youth Leadership Conference last year and met the two former Westtown School teachers, Kwesi and Melissa Koomson, who founded and run the school. Kwesi

Koomson established the K-12 school in 2004 in Breman Essiam, the village where he grew up. At Heritage Academy, Nate’s assignment was to teach creative writing to middle schoolers, aged 12-15. He described arriving with carefully prepared lesson plans that he had to revise completely to be effective as a teacher. In a culture where the educational emphasis is on working towards a single cumulative exam at the end of high school, teaching creative writing was a challenge. “It was much more difficult for them because they’d never really been asked to do anything creative or think outside the box – the whole idea of their education is that they’re preparing for this one test at the end of their senior year,” said Nate. “Pushing them to think creatively

was difficult, but I was able to see some progress. I really enjoyed it. “The experience has affected the way I think,” he explained, “especially about the things I’ve been taking for granted. The luxuries that I have here in America – although I was not born into them – are something that I have grown accustomed to, and this change of life, even if only for three weeks, was an experience that I am so grateful to have had. It was a truly amazing experience, and I hope one day to be back in Ghana teaching.”

Sustainability Initiative

Language Immersion in South Korea Ava Duane ’18 spent six weeks last summer in Seoul, South Korea, living with a host family and studying Korean at Sookmyung Women’s University, on a scholarship she won through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program. She attended classes every day from 9 am to 1 pm and had the afternoons free to explore the city with friends. “The program gave us a transportation card, as well as stipend money that we could use as we wished,” said Ava, “This allowed us to do many fun and novel things on our own time. Twice a week, I met with supporters – college-aged students with whom we would explore the city and do some additional studying with as well.” Along with the American friends she made who were on the same scholarship, Ava also made many Korean high school friends who showed her around Seoul and provided a great opportunity to practice the language. “I loved starting my day conversing with my host mom, as well as coming home to a real family and not a dorm room every night. I really felt like I grew into a more confident and independent person,” said Ava, “This summer was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had.”

FRIENDS’ CENTRAL SCHOOL

In May, the Upper School Sustainability Club implemented their initiative to stop the sale of plastic water bottles at Friends’ Central and raised funds to allow students and staff to receive or purchase high-quality, BPA-free stainless-steel water bottles. With the guidance of Club Advisors Joel Dankoff and Doug Ross, the School installed six water-filling stations.

Grandparents’ & Special Friends’ Day

Grades 5 & 8 “Moving Up”

In May, grandparents and special friends spent an activity-filled afternoon with their 2nd-5th grade hosts at the Lower School, exploring the School and getting to know the teachers.

Every spring, in each division, we celebrate transition. After a Meeting for Leaving, grade 5 students ring the Lower School Friendship Bell to mark the start of Middle School, and the Middle School holds a Meeting for Leaving to recognize the achievements of grade 8 students as they progress to Upper School.

2015-2016 SAVE THE DATES: Middle School Grandparents’ & Special Friends’ Day is Friday, December 4, 2015. Lower School Pre-K/K/Gr. 1 Grandparents’ & Special Friends’ Day is Thursday, May 5, 2016.

Public Defenders Helen Levin and Dan Stevenson addressing Upper School students

Earth Day 2015 To celebrate Earth Day 2015, the Middle School held a range of community-wide events, including an interactive art installation, the removal of invasive plants from FCS grounds and Indian Creek East by Streamwatch students, eighth grade Earth Force project work, and a seventh grade campus scavenger hunt.

Public Defenders Visit Classroom In conjunction with course units on Structural Violence and the American Prison System, Mike Crauderueff’s Upper School Peace Studies class was visited by Philadelphia Public Defenders Helen Levin and Dan Stevenson in April. The lawyers presented the class with the hypothetical scenario of a local murder case and, using the case as their example, guided the students in a conversation about how public defenders do the work of defending the accused, especially in a death penalty case.

Fulbright Grants for Our Community

Rachel McVey, pictured third from left, with colleagues at the Institute of Roma Culture Albania (IRCA)

Rachel McVey ’10 was designated a Fulbright Scholar for 2015-2016. The Fulbright program provides grants to promote mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange. McVey’s grant took her to Hungary this summer, where she taught English at a college. McVey, who graduated magna cum laude in 2014 from the University of Pittsburgh, has previously worked with two NGOs in Tirana, Albania – ARSIS Association for the Social Support of Youth and the Institute of Roma Culture Albania (IRCA) – which, she said, “helped me

gain insight into the socio-cultural dimensions of development aid aimed at minority populations.” Upper School history teacher and 12th grade dean Frank Fisher, who taught McVey when she was at FCS, was awarded a Fulbright-Hays grant to study Zulu culture, politics, and language in South Africa this past summer. He applied for the grant, administered by the University of Pennsylvania, with a view to bringing back a “more nuanced understanding” of the role of ethnic identity in a culturally complicated landscape.

COMING SOON: SHALLCROSS HALL REIMAGINED CAMPUS LOG

A dramatic renovation of Shallcross Hall will transform a highly functional building into a student center that both upholds our values and inspires the best in our students. Shallcross Hall New Exterior

Built in 1978, Shallcross Hall was designed to be a creative and performing arts center, cafeteria, and Meeting for Worship space. The School did not yet have a campus green, and the building was oriented to front the driveway. The Shallcross Hall that Middle and Upper School students and teachers now experience daily is a highly functional, productive building, yet its architecture does not fully reflect the warmth, vibrancy, and synergy of our community.

New Art Gallery and Atrium

With the renovation, large, beautiful windows and an outdoor seating area will enhance the exterior of the building, welcoming people on the outside into the myriad activities taking place within. From the outside, visitors will see artists at work in their studios and students gathering in both large and small groups in the dining hall and expanded entry area.

New Food Servery

New Dining Hall

12

FRIENDS’ CENTRAL SCHOOL

The new Shallcross Hall will serve as a true student center, building community by changing the way we interact with one another and by lifting up the importance of the arts to all of us. Entry in the building will reveal a modern and expanded art gallery with an atrium view up to galleries on the second floor. The expanded dining area will ease crowding and create new, varied seating arrangements for groups or individuals. Food service is undergoing its own small revolution, with a focus on increasing the fresh and healthy options and serving them in a way that brings students and teachers into more contact with kitchen staff who are preparing and serving food.

AND LOWER SCHOOL LIGHT LAB

Transforming the Lower School Carriage House into a Center for Innovation and Creation Within our walls today, teachers provide extraordinary opportunities to create and construct across the curriculum. In fact, Friends’ Central teachers were pioneers in play-based, hands-on experiential learning, and their successors have continued to build on this tradition of excellence. A walk down today’s hallways is both a source of joy and evidence of our need for improved space, as projects seem to explode from classrooms not designed to optimize this kind of learning. A Friends’ Central education begins with an understanding that we encourage creativity and spark innovation by honoring each of our students as individuals. The confidence nurtured

by this level of respect emboldens our students’ willingness to take creative chances without fear – to dare to explore without worrying that their ideas might be different. Every day, we honor the notion that there may be more than one way to a great answer. Scheduled for completion in September 2016, the Light Lab will bring together our creative faculty with cuttingedge design, increased space, and a plethora of tools and resources – giving Friends’ Central students the very best opportunities to innovate and create. COMMENCEMENT 2015 Class of 2015 – You Are Your Own Composition On Saturday, June 13, 2015, the members of the Class of 2015 joined “the long line of distinguished graduates who have added their voices to the world,” in the words of Commencement speaker Carl Bradley. Head of School Craig Sellers began the 170th Commencement exercises, honoring the 95 members of the Class of 2015, by acknowledging the graduates’ family and friends, as well as the faculty. “Thank you to the parents, grandparents, family, and friends who had the generosity of spirit to collaborate with us over the years. Thank you to the faculty who have inspired this class to heights they could not have imagined without your kindness, your caring, and your compassion.” Our student speakers, Saoirse Hahn and Daniel Nemroff, each shared a recipe for success with their fellow graduates. Saoirse called for her classmates to “make college fulfill the role of a blank canvas. Go out of your comfort zone. Take new and unusual classes. Meet new people. And, most of all, make

mistakes.” Making mistakes, Saoirse said, is what makes each of us human, leading to resilience and perseverance. In Daniel’s words of wisdom, he commented, “True success means doing the things that make you happy and surrounding yourself with the people who make you happy.” The path to true success, true happiness will be different for each member of the Class of 2015. If their impact on the fabric of Friends’ Central School is any indication, there is no doubt that they will peacefully transform the world, no matter what path they may take. Carl Bradley’s parting message to the graduates said it best: “Class of 2015, I say, use this great life you have, this composition you have started, and weave a new theme in the texture of our world. Open your heart to new harmonies, work for a better world, and always remember there is nothing more beautiful, more needed, than a richly loved life.” Congratulations, graduates! QW

FRIENDS’ CENTRAL SCHOOL

Dear Friends, Thank you for your support! This year, you gave Friends’ Central $3,145,461! There is no corner of our School that doesn’t depend on the long-standing generosity of our community. Our faculty, our students, our beautiful campuses, and our outstanding programming all benefited from your generosity. Whether you made a gift to the Friends’ Central Fund, added Friends’ Central to your estate plan, Lydia Martin gave through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) or Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs, or supported the endowment, your gifts helped us fulfill our Mission. We are particularly grateful to parents and alumni/ae who gave to the Friends’ Central Fund in increasing numbers this past year. The Friends’ Central Fund is the School’s top fundraising priority. It supports every aspect of the School – from re-enacting butterfly migrations in Lower School, Middle School drama productions and Upper School championship teams, to faculty salaries and benefits and financial aid. Please join me in thanking Smedley Walters ‘44 and his wife Demetra who gave $1 million to establish an endowed scholarship fund for Upper School students. (Please see page 28 for the full story.) This year, we began fundraising for two reimagined spaces, the Carriage House at the Lower School and Shallcross Hall on the City Avenue campus. Each will serve Friends’ Central in important ways, creating new learning and collaborative opportunities. As we are renovating our dining space in Shallcross Hall, we are also in the process of rethinking the food we serve on both campuses. (Please see pages 10 and 11 of QuakerWorks to read more.) Fundraising for both projects is off to a good a start and is ongoing. If you are interested in helping to bring these transformational spaces to our campuses, please contact the Development Office. After 10 wonderful years serving as Friends’ Central’s lead fundraiser, I have moved to a new position, Director of Strategic Initiatives. I am grateful for this community’s loyalty and generosity and look forward to serving the School in this new capacity. It is my pleasure to introduce you to our new Director of Development, Bob Cotter. Bob comes to us from the Chapin School in Princeton, NJ, and spent many years at Friends Select. Welcome, Bob! Warm regards,

Lydia Martin Director of Strategic Initiatives

Bob Cotter

THE HERBERT SMEDLEY WALTERS ’44 AND DEMETRA WALTERS SCHOLARSHIP FUND On June 30, Smedley and Demetra Walters created a $1 million scholarship fund for Upper School students with financial need. This fabulous gift is the culmination of a long friendship with and great loyalty to Friends’ Central School. Though Smedley graduated long before Friends’ Central published its Mission, to “cultivate the intellectual, spiritual, and ethical promise of our students,” he embodies “mission accomplished.” A generous man who has always been attuned to people less privileged than he, Smedley worked for the establishment of the WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children) program. Demetra Walters was chief nurse on an OB/GYN floor, which is where they met, brought together by their shared service to women and infants. By establishing an endowed fund for Friends’ Central Upper School students with financial need, Smedley and Demetra have created new opportunities for talented students every year, in

FRIENDS’ CENTRAL SCHOOL

perpetuity. Their gift will help countless students in the years to come. Each will be as grateful as we are today! While at Friends’ Central, Smedley had a passion for gas-powered model airplanes. This interest continued and blossomed to include real airplanes. Understanding engines, tinkering, building, and experimenting was encouraged at Friends’ Central, and Smedley has continued to fly – real or model – airplanes his whole life. Smedley came to Friends’ Central as a Kindergarten student. During World War II, gas shortages made the family’s long commute to school untenable, and Smedley went to public school for three years. Determined to graduate with his classmates, Smedley returned to FCS for his senior year. This strong loyalty has endured for 71 years! We have appreciated Smedley’s willingness to host class parties, attend School events, and extend his friendship to our alumni/ae office and School. Smedley and Demetra’s tremendous gift is the pinnacle of years of generosity. QW

REUNION GIVING TRANSFORMS CLASSROOMS! Reunion gifts made a visible difference at Friends’ Central this year. Some class gifts resulted in plaques that will be placed on the flower planters on the Main Building patio, while other classes raised funds to update and renovate Main Building classrooms. In appreciation for these gifts, plaques will be placed outside the classrooms they helped to renovate. Rooms on the second floor were painted, re-carpeted, and new light fixtures were installed this summer, and new furniture provided thanks to an anonymous alumni/ae gift which matched gifts from the Class of 1955 in honor of their 60th Reunion. In celebration of their 55th Reunion, the Class of 1960 raised funds to renovate the third floor classroom where their beloved teacher Berenice Woerner taught for over 41 years. Their gift connects past to present – remembering Ms. Woerner and updating language teacher Cristina Perez’s classroom for the 21st century. These renovations to the third floor are slated for later this year. Classes celebrating their Reunions in May 2016 are welcome to contact Linda Wasserman, Director of Alumni/ae Relations, at lwasserman@friendscentral.org for information on the additional naming opportunities. QW

Classrooms on the second floor in the process of renovation (above, top row) and fully renovated (above, bottom row), thanks to the generosity of the Class of 1955; Members of the Class of 1960 inside what was Berenice Woerner’s third floor classroom (below)

BLACKBURN SOCIETY The Board of Trustees established the Blackburn Society to honor individuals who have made provisions in their wills or estate plans to benefit Friends’ Central School. These donors, who have informed the School of their intentions, have helped provide for the School’s future through a variety of gift-planning vehicles, including bequest intentions, testamentary trusts, and life income vehicles, such as pooled income investments, charitable gift annuities, gifts of real estate, and other deferred gifts. Their vision and wisdom extend beyond the immediate needs of the School, and their generosity provides a source of income which the School can depend upon and use to plan for generations ahead.

Eliza E. Blackburn ’22

The Blackburn Society was named in honor of Eliza E. Blackburn ’22 and her family. Their estate gift helped make possible the purchase of the Lower School campus and establish the Blackburn Enhancement, a salary supplement given to teachers each December. If you would like to inform us of your intention to include Friends’ Central School in your estate plans, or if you would like information about ways in which you can make planned gifts to Friends’ Central, please contact Bob Cotter, Director of Development, at 610.645.5076 or rcotter@friendscentral.org.

UNRESTRICTED ANNUAL GIVING

2014 GREEN CLUB Thank you to the members of the “Green Club” who gave early in the fall, online, or in person – ensuring that they would receive no paper solicitations from the Office of Annual Giving. Giving early also allowed the School to put the funds immediately to work for programs and activities during the school year. If you are interested in “giving green” in the future, please email Kim Emmons-Benjet at kbenjet@friendscentral.org.

Around campus, there are numerous memorials such as this art piece, Spirits Having Flown, by alumnus John Whereat ’76 created in memory of departed classmates from the Class of 1976 Gordon Sax, David Tanis, and Jean-Pierre Guggenheim. This sculpture hangs in the Shimada Gymnasium, an appropriately central location, where it intrigues and inspires current and future generations of FCS students and faculty alike.

Our annual EITC gift helps Friends’ Central open its doors wide to the best students, regardless of their financial need.” – Max Berger, President, MBA Equities Max and Elyse Berger are parents of Ethan Berger ’18 and Matthew Berger ’18

HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION 2014-2015 The Home and School Association is the organized body of all Friends’ Central parents. The personal investment of mothers and fathers in their children’s education is an integral part of the School’s philosophy, and by encouraging parental involvement, Friends’ Central accomplishes its goal of establishing a partnership among the School, the student, and the family. Thank you to the following parents who held leadership positions and to all those who volunteered at events throughout the year.
