Fall 2015

Dear Friends of Friends Education, 2014-2015

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Darryl J. Ford, Clerk Michelle Holland, Assistant Clerk Kenneth Aldridge, Secretary Joseph M. Evans, Treasurer

2014-2015 was a dynamic and exciting year at Friends Council on Education, filled with a range of strategic achievements, all made possible by the unwavering support of you, our generous and loyal Friends Council donors. Bolstered by gifts large and small, we have moved into this next chapter for Friends Council with strength, energy, new ideas, and new possibilities. We stand firm in our belief in the Friends Council mission and the importance of this vibrant network of schools. We thank you for your passion for and commitment to Friends education. In April 2015 we graduated our sixth Leadership and SPARC cohorts, launching 38 new

graduates into the world to lead with passion, commitment, and finely honed leadership visions and

skills. Interest in both the Leadership Institute and SPARC runs high, with a record number of

applicants for the next cohorts! We made significant strides this year with the new scholarship effort, the National Endowment for Quaker Children (NEQC). As of this writing, we have passed the one million dollar mark in total commitments, bringing us nearly halfway to the Phase I goal of $2.2 million. In addition, we have launched a pilot program that allows us to test the NEQC initiative and begin to distribute scholarships to students as the endowment grows. We thank the NEQC Work Group for its hard work and dedication this year.

Matt Glendinning Lili Herbert Heather Hoerle Juan Jewell

The Membership Renewal Process (MRP) self-studies and visits continue with vigor. This year six schools were approved for membership renewal, and the process engaged 13 Friends Council board members, staff and Leadership graduates in visits to schools. Our workshops and peer networks –a vital part of Friends Council’s program– foster

collaboration between schools and build a strong Friends school professional development network.

This year we held ten peer networks and six workshops, serving over 500 Quaker school educators

across the country. Our efforts to lift up diversity work in Friends schools continued through our diversity peer network and our involvement as a co-host of a mini White Privilege Conference (WPC) in October 2015. “Let Freedom Ring– Re-Imagining Equity and Justice in the United States” is the theme of the upcoming national WPC in April 2016 in Philadelphia. Friends Council, a local co-sponsor, recognizes this forum as a source of best practices for dialogue about diversity, race, and privilege. Whether you are a longtime, loyal donor or new to our community, we thank you for sustaining the world of Friends education by supporting Friends Council.

Sincerely,

Darryl J. Ford, Clerk

Drew Smith, Executive Director

Making A Sustained, Enduring Commitment to Friends Education Friends Council Sustainer: Mike Hanas Once a month, every month, Mike Hanas makes a gift to the Friends Council Annual Fund. He didn’t always make his gifts this way, but five years ago, when Friends Council’s Sustainer Program was launched, Mike chose to participate. While the Sustainer Program is set up to be easy, convenient, and eco-friendly– and it is all of those– for Mike it is about something much deeper and more meaningful. For him, it is about making a sustained, enduring commitment to something he feels has the power to change the world: Friends education. “I am an idealist, if not a hopeless romantic. I believe education– teaching and learning – is the best medium for changing lives and circumstances in the world,” says Mike. “I believe independent schools have a moral obligation to lead, to use well the autonomy that our independence affords us and to maximize our opportunity to serve a public purpose. The commitment of Friends education to serving a public purpose –what we call “education for action” at Carolina Friends School– has been compelling and resonant for me. It has been enduring. And that’s what it takes. It takes an enduring, sustained commitment to creating the change many of us hope to see.” Mike shares that while he may not have the means to make a large, transformative gift, he wants his giving to be as meaningful as possible. “Something about being a Sustainer resonates with what I consider to be the great values of Friends education, the enduring commitment to truth seeking, to stewardship as collective responsibility, and to the true celebration of diversity and inclusivity,” says Mike. “The path of being a Sustainer for Friends Council allows me to make my modest giving as meaningful as possible,” he says. “In my twenty-nine years working in schools, I have never experienced better alignment of mission and practice than I have in the world of Friends education,” says Mike. “As I am able to be more deliberate with my philanthropy, I have chosen to support Friends Council on Education as a means of supporting Friends education everywhere. It has been an easy choice. In Friends education, the integrity between mission and practice means the world to me.” “Having served in a leadership role in a Friends school, I know what a difference giving makes,” says Mike. “I would ask everyone, each of us, to recognize that our gifts have the potential to make a difference in what we believe is important. “ Mike Hanas is currently the head of Carolina Friends School and a Friends Council Board member. He will assume the role of head of San Francisco Friends School in July 2016.

Become a Sustainer: Friends Council Sustainers chose to make regular contributions throughout the year on a payment schedule that works for them. By authorizing a regular payment schedule through credit card payments or checking account deductions, the Sustainer Program allows you to spread your gift out over time in an easy and efficient manner. Being a Sustainer is also eco-friendly: once you sign up you will no longer receive annual fund appeal letters, reducing paper and postage.

Thank you for Sustaining Us Cheers to the members of our Sustainer Program! Our sustainers have chosen to give periodically throughout the year on a schedule that works for them through automatic withdrawal from their credit card or bank account. Sustainers get a sense of satisfaction and Friends Council receives a steady stream of reliable gifts throughout the year in an efficient, effective and earth friendly way! Amy Ward Brimmer & J. Friends Council on Education Fundraising Highlights 2014-2015 We reached our goal! Thanks to the generous support of Friends Council donors, we reached our goal of $82,000, all of which supports the Council’s work sustaining our Friends school network. What impact does your gift have? See our Infographic inside. 100% of the Friends Council Board and staff supported the 2014-15 Annual Fund this year. We surpassed our 2014-2015 fundraising goal for the Friends Education Fund, a scholarship fund supporting Quaker students in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting schools. We also received a significant gift to the Friends Education Fund endowment. Thank you! We reached a milestone in the major gifts campaign for the National Endowment for Quaker Children, our new scholarship fund to support Quaker students in Friends schools across the country. As of June 30, 2015, we passed the one million dollar mark for all gift commitments to this campaign, bringing us almost half way to the Phase 1 goal of $2.2 million dollars. We have launched the NEQC Pilot Program to test the NEQC program as we continue to grow the endowment. Thanks to the generosity of two donors and one foundation, we have sufficient funds to begin distributing NEQC scholarships in 2015-2016! We currently have an ongoing matching challenge for the National Endowment for Quaker Children. Your gift to NEQC will be doubled! Photo: Buckingham Friends School
