June 30, 2017 Dear Friends of Friends Education,
These turbulent social and political times put your many gifts to Friends Council – gifts of time, talent, and financial resources -- in a special light. We are humbled by the continued generosity of our Friends school community, by your creativity and energy, and by the emerging, collaborative partnerships that are breathing new energy into our work in support of Friends schools and the values for which they stand. Thanks to your generosity, Friends Council continues to respond to the emerging needs of our schools and educators in this new era of politics and policy. New programming this year included workshops in media and information literacy, teaching in uncertain times, and the addition of a new peer network in special learning needs education. Friends Council also coordinated and hosted a new all-day UnColumbus Day Workshop to explore the myths and misperceptions that can often be perpetuated in teaching around native cultures and our national holidays. This year Friends Council completed a dynamic, strategic planning process involving our own Board of Directors, our heads of our school, and a panel representing the constituencies of Friends schools. This culminated at our annual spring meeting where approximately 100 members of our community gathered to collectively test an emerging set of priorities, and affirm a vision for the future of Friends Council. The process fully unleashed the creative talent of our national community! In the spring of 2017, five of our schools offered a $9,000 matching, annual fund challenge that resulted in an additional $21,000 towards our annual fund goal. These funds help us to expand professional development offerings for Friends school faculty members, enhance our capacity to support school heads and boards, and be more responsive to requests by schools for our support. We thank you who participated in this challenge. Many thanks to each of you who have made an annual gift to our tuition aid programs - for PYM children in PYM schools, for the endowment to build a national fund for Quaker students in Friends schools beyond PYM, and gifts made to its parallel pilot program, which enable us to award tuition aid grants as part of this new, national effort. With your continued support, it is our hope to continue the growth of our tuition aid funging for Quaker children in Friends schools. We thank you, too, for responding to our 2017 survey and sharing your feedback and thinking on Friends Council’s current work and our future direction. We heard loudly and clearly that amplifying the national voice of Friends education should be a priority, as we continue the always-critical work of nurturing the Quaker character of our Friends schools. We hope that our newly redesigned website is providing you with easier access to information and resources, as well as keeping you up-to-date on our strategic priorities. Thank you for your ongoing support of Friends Council’s vitally important work supporting Quaker schools across the country and your commitment to the shared work of educating young people in the manner of Friends.

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6: 21)
Ravdin Fund As the former Director of Development at Media-Providence Friends School, I relied on Bill Ravdin’s gentle, professional guidance. From his consulting work at our school and through his (and his wife, Mary’s) stewardship for the School, I learned not only to be a passionate fundraiser, but I was reminded by him of the importance of the work we do for young children. His advice centered on the children and the importance of early education … about the joys of learning, the importance of laying the foundation for a child's educational journey and about education that would carry a child through her/his lifetime. Bill’s steady, kind and professional support helped me and so many other colleagues in small Quaker schools provide the very best in fiduciary responsibility and long-range financial planning and stewardship. To give back to his work, through philanthropic support for the Ravdin Fund which supports small Friends schools with financial needs, is an honor for my husband and me. A Bequest with National Impact
Supporting Tuition Aid for Quaker Children to Attend Quaker Schools Across the Country Paul R. Smith Paul Smith says he owes a lot to Quaker Education. In the late 1940’s, Paul attended Haverford College where he met a number of outstanding Quakers: Gilbert White, President of the College; Archibald Macintosh, Vice President; Gilbert Hoag, Dean; Douglas Steere, Chair of the Philosophy Department; and Rufus Jones, retired Chair of the Philosophy Department. “I absorbed the character of those men,” says Paul, and indeed he absorbed a whole lot more. Paul’s experience at Haverford College led him to join the Religious Society of Friends by joining Radnor Monthly Meeting, which he calls his “spiritual home.” Eventually he was asked to be the Treasurer of Haverford Friends School, a Quaker elementary school in a care relationship with Haverford Monthly Meeting. Paul also served as Acting Principal of this school on two later occasions. When asked why he has supported Friends Council on Education for so many years, actually thirteen years in a row, Paul says, “Why not? The strength of Quakerism has a lot to do with their educational institutions. Many students are eventually led to join the Religious Society of Friends because of their Quaker school experience. Friends Council helps maintain and build these Quaker institutions, and that is very important.” Recently Paul chose to extend his support of Friends Council beyond his yearly Annual Fund gift by joining the Evergreen Circle of Friends, Friends Council’s planned giving circle. Paul said, “I noticed recently that I had no Quaker bequest in my will, and I wanted to remedy that oversight.” He recently had received a mailing from Friends Council about the tuition aid to help Quaker children attend Friends schools. “I thought that would be an excellent idea.” Paul is the first Evergreen Circle member to designate his bequest to Friends Council’s endowment for national level tuition aid. It was the national impact of the endowment that caught Paul’s attention and inspired him to add FCE to his will in this way. “We need to encourage more Quaker children nationally to attend Quaker schools,” says Paul. “I am very impressed with this effort. It is a very worthy cause.”

Donors Rise to Meet Five Schools Challenge! When five Friends schools from across the country -San Francisco Friends School, Friends’ Central School, William Penn Charter School, Carolina Friends School and Friends Seminary – came together in 2016-2017 to present the Five Schools Challenge, big things happened! You, our Friends Council donors, responded enthusiastically. New donors stepped forth, current donors increased their giving and the annual fund reached its highest level in Friend Council history!
Introduced new and responsive professional development programming, including workshops on: l Teaching in Uncertain Times l Media and Information Literacy in the Era of “Fake News” l Special Learning Needs Education l Un-Columbus Day Supported 17 schools on matters of strategic importance, including strategic planning, Board decision making, and leadership decisionmaking. Served 700 educators through 23 peer networks and workshops for Friends schools. Launched a newly revised website with responsive design for improved communication, better access to resources, and amplification of our national voice.
“Thanks to the success of the 2016-2017 annual fund and generosity of schools and donors, Friends Council has been able to enhance our professional development programming and expand our services,” says Friends Council’s Executive Director, Drew Smith. “On our wish list for the future is the ability to further expand our support of Friends school heads and boards, and develop a new program for administrators on how to enhance the Quaker nature of their work and schools.” Many thanks to San Francisco Friends School, Friends’ Central School, William Penn Charter School, Carolina Friends School and Friends Seminary and all those who rose to meet the challenge. Your generosity benefits our broad network of 78 schools.
