With a small team and big groups of friends, the work started from a small scale, with a hope to expand to wider and more diverse groups of people in Thai society. Our main activities are alternative media, human rights education and peoples' network promotion via workshop training and exchange forums, and capacity building and consultancy for community-based organizations.

ate last year, a Karenni refugee was shot dead by a volunteer guard. Some people believed the rumor was intentionally released, with no grounds, that the angry refugee crowd had subsequently destroyed a Thai national flag as revenge. Then, earlier this year, there were reports about security force restrictions against a cultural celebration of the Mon-Thai with Mon migrants, about the assassination of the Karen National Union's secretary-general that took place on Thai soil, and about the new Thai government and parliament, which caused an incredible sick feeling in our stomachs. With such 'dark clouds' looming overhead, I had a chance to have conversations with three 'teachers'. The first one is a stateless Mon from Kanchanaburi province who came to be a teacher for migrant children in industrial zone in Bangkok suburb. The second one is a Karen refugee who had an opportunity for resettlement in the third country but decided to return to be a teacher for displaced children inside Karen state. The last teacher is a respectable senior of the Thai classical music community who was invited to teach at a music institution in Rangoon, Burma. There were similarities amongst such apparent differences. During our conversations, each of the teachers burst out in frustration over the decline they saw in the society they lived in, either due to the pressures of displacement and war or the current educational system that teaches people to think shorter and superficially. These frustrations, however, seemed to spark up their great teacher spirits; passing on knowledge and skills on hearing, seeing, thinking and acting to the next generation, to them, has become a must. Friends Without Borders 'Freedom Education' issue is dedicated to all teachers and students, in and out of schools, who take education not only as duty, but a right to lead us all to freedom and dignity. However, before the manuscript was ready for printing, I found another piece of news regarding a proposal to spend a great amount of the national budget to buy one million computers, from somewhere, for schools around the country, in order to strengthen the quality of education for Thai children. A teacher friend of mine once said that one could teach students nothing, if he or she saw the students as only a component of their career; students would get nothing from those who lacked sincere, good wishes for them. To issue a good quality education policy surely also requires sincere, good wishes for the population, not as only a part of the country's mechanism. It is nice that computers will be available to schoolchildren, even in schools with no electricity, but I couldn't help worrying that these machines were appointed too great a mission for their mechanical brains to be capable of. The computers' calculation capacities may only be as fine as the logic to spend great money on them. Instead of making efforts to develop a kind of curriculum and skills set for teachers' that could help equip our young people with analytical thinking, we see this kind of proposal. The three teachers described here, and certainly many more, live their lives with hope and confidence that the social, political, economic ills of today are not yet the end of the story, and they will continue planting the spirit of human freedom, allowing it to live on. Similar to Ms. Erin Gruwell's observations in 'Wag My Tail', Friends Without Borders also believes that the fight for freedom cannot wait to start in the courtroom, but it must be an integral part of education in families, in schools, in communities, and in the media. Our great wish is to be part of that struggle. With faith in human dignity, Pim Koetsawang

The barrage of heavy gunfire and shells were heard from every direction. The school was located between two fighting troops. Little kids screamed and ran into their teacher' arms. The teacher spread his arms to hold his students like a mother hen protecting her chicks, pulling them down onto the floor, trembling in terror and wet with tears. An hour later, the gunfire ceased. How many were injured and dead? The teacher hurriedly ran out to reach his pupils hiding in various corners. Where? Where? Where are they? Before long all the kids came out, standing around him repeating, "It's okay now. It's okay. We are all safe, teacher. Please stop crying." Whenever asked about it, Teacher Dah would relate the story with laughter. "I am such a coward and a cry baby," he said. This scary moment dates back only a few years; however in his more than ten years as a teacher, which he has been since the age of 18 in fact, Teacher Dah has cried like this many times. But it can't prevent him from teaching. I have met Teach Dah quite often in several teachers' trainings. He is a very determined person; he notes everything he learned and reviews it every night. Being a teacher means being a life-time student; a teacher has to learn constantly in order to share knowledge with children in such an isolated world. Teacher Dah invited me to visit his school on the Burmese bank of the Moei River, but I never had enough courage to go. Teacher Dah, however fragile and feminine, to me, is much braver than many men, including myself. Part of the Karen State close to the Thai border is under control of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA), while the other part is under the Karen National Union (KNU), which remains the largest group fighting against the Burmese military regime. After splitting from the KNU, the DKBA reached a ceasefire agreement with the regime which subsequently led to the most intense period of fighting in this area. Many schools in the border areas were repeatedly burnt down and children were constantly displaced. With no understandable reasons, Karen people fight against one another; brothers kill brothers, children kill fathers, uncles kill nephews. Religion is in fact not the key to conflict as claimed. There is no pure Buddhist or Christian village. Teacher Dah is a Christian and he is warmly welcomed by DKBA leaders. Watching Teacher Dah reviewing his lessons under the candlelight, my mind traveled far. As parents grow seeds into seedlings, teachers water them to grow and bear flowers. Teacher Dah teaches in order for the children to have a better future and it has meant his task is more than teaching kids to read and write. In a conflict zone like this one, there are many wounds to be healed and lots of uncertainty to be prepared for. "We have turned our back to peace for too long," he said. Small conflicts in a village may lead to a quarrel, and without good conflict management, it can expand into war. Where little peace has not yet grown, great peace will never be born. Although his explanation was a bit ambiguous, I understood quite well that he was trying to grow the little seeds of peace in his classroom. Teacher Dah's lessons on child rights focus on promoting the respect for one another. The second grade pupils have to learn to value diversity and respect the rights of other kids; whether Buddhist, Christian, Karen or Burmese. Perhaps, grown-ups do not want to hear much about peace because they are exposed to the daily reality of cruelty and recognize peace as only a dream. Children, however, are still able to hope as Teacher Dah is, that one day their smiles will possibly convince the adults. I sometimes wonder why many of us bar ourselves from humanity, close off our countries from the rest of the world, and build giant walls to prevent all birds of freedom to fly outside. Pupils in many schools in conflict areas have been born behind this wall. Their teachers haven't been able to demolish it, yet they are trying to strengthen the wings of the freedom birds. A world with no walls is more than a foolish dream. If asked if he will be quitting this hard job, Teacher Dah never gives any fancy answer. His only reply is a short, sincere, "No, I'll miss my students." A reason that seems much more real, deeper than the idealistic answers orated by many others.

If we all think that education is a bridge towards goal, success and dignity, then every societies have to provide full supports to education. Basic education is among the top mandate of all states. At least, literacy is the basic step to a qualitative population development for the world's future. In reality, however, we can see that many states, or those in power, have used education as a tool to achieve their own goals, especially to silence people and keep them under their control. Many do not provide much support to their population's education. Instead, the existing resources are thrown into militarization and the armed forces, just to protect and maintain their authority. A UNESCO report revealed that the Burmese military regime allocated only 4% of its fiscal budget for education while 40% is for weaponry and the army. In the late 1990s, a World Bank report showed that education in Burma received only 1.2% of the fiscal national budget. That means that educational support per student in Burma amounted to only 11 baht per year. In 2002, the Burmese military regime boasted that the state paid almost 1.3 billion baht to enable more than eight million children access to primary education. Nevertheless, they admitted that another three million schoolaged children wouldn't yet gain such an opportunity. A UNICEF report showed that only 34 out of every 100 primary school students would have a chance to finish primary school, (and among this, only a handful can further complete secondary school and ever less will have the opportunity to enter university) meaning that five out of the eight million primary school students might not be able to complete primary school. Coupled with the three million children with no opportunity, the country ends up with about eight million children who do not complete their education at the primary school level. In addition to the discussion of financial support, the regime has closed down universities and colleges ? as often and as long as they want ? when they fear that student political gatherings could be a threat to their own security. Since the student-led democracy uprising in1988 until 2000, universities were more often closed than open. The closure period ranged from one month to up to three years. And when they universities were allowed to open again, orders came that the one-year curriculum must be reviewed and shortened to only four months. Recently on 7 December 2007, Mizzima News reported that a new scholarship regulation was introduced; applicants must serve the government for at least three years before applying. The new regulation also requires the scholar to return home from aboard immediately after their courses are completed, or the family will have to pay a fine of five million kyats (about 135,135 baht) and must repay the shcolarship at a later date. Before that, none of the family members are allowed to travel abroad in order to prevent the entire family from migrating to other countries. Without support from the government, it is impossible for an ordinary person in Burma to have good education. Approximately 75% of the population is living in poverty. At least 60-80% of their meager earnings must be kept for food. The shortage of primary school teachers has become severe and those who are teachers can hardly afford to live. Those teaching in remote schools find travel to the nearest town in order to get their salary may cost them more than what they earn. It sounds ridiculous that with an aim to maintain their power, a group of people can cause this severe of a disaster. At present, the Burmese literacy rate is relatively low; it used to be the highest in Asia with a very advanced system during the 1940s-1950s. I look back to Thailand 30-40 years ago; even our military governments were unable to cause such a great harm to education. At least, the government's support for compulsory education may in some ways promote literacy. However, when looking at educational control, the situation in Thailand wasn't much different from that of Burma, in particular when several categories of books were banned over 30 years ago. Yet, some of these books finally found their way to reach progressive people. Then, after the fruit of their thoughts ripened, these people led society to a change that is the foundation of modern Thai democracy (although it wasn't one many would expect). Thus, I told myself that no matter how hard they would try, the Burmese military regime won't be able to prevent every citizen from learning. It is human nature to want to find ways to learn - to make a better life. The 1988 student uprising and last year's saffron revolution are two of the examples that have declared the people's ability to find their learning channels that would lead them to better future. So, are we ready to support them in any way for any channels? (I'd like to recommend an article titled "Education in Burma: Floating Books and Bathroom Tract" in Living Silence: Burma under Military Rule written by Christina Fink (Publisher: White Lotus, Bangkok, 2001). This article gives me the inspiration for writing this story.)

Flying beyond the Barbwires A song from the teacher ‌ on the blurring of boundaries This is a diary of an MD, an old handy recorder I found and would like to share with you. You may not believe how far this MD has traveled. It used to be a partner of a country musician before it moved on to record songs up on the mountain and finally landed in the hands of its current owner who once escorted it to record Karenni refugees' songs in the cave of a refugee camp.
Looking at people walking up the road, A barbwire fence bars between me and those. We can't step out, can we? Why? Just because I'm a refugee.* I'd been lying quietly for a long rest before the day I heard a voice talking to my owner that he'd like to borrow me to record the voices from the edge of the margins. I then thought about different faiths of different MDs. Some live comfortably with city people, but I have a rough and winding path to go. My task is to bring out the voices whose owners can't get through a barbwire fence.
Sometimes, looking at the big blue sky, My heart flies out there. If only I can get out to the outside world, There will be lots of stories for me to share* After fours hours on an air-conditioned bus plus two hours on winding roads cutting through high mountains, finally I arrived in Mae Sot. No, this is not yet our destination. Although there are studios in Mae Sot, our musicians cannot travel out here. I lay down listening to people talking about an immigration cell close to the bus station, before being taken up on an old minibus. The conversation in Burmese and Karen was heard through the loud noise of an engine and the voices of tranquil villages and corn fields. There might be thousands of migrant workers from Burma hiding there. I could hear them breathing. Saw was waiting for me at the bus stop. He's the one who wrote the song, "Fly beyond the Barbwires" that we came here for. Saw is a Karen from Chiang Mai and has no problem traveling, but the other three band members have no way to cross the invisible fence to go tell their thoughts anywhere. In a distance of a hand's reach, they cannot reach their hands out. That's the reason why I had to be taken up on a motorcycle ride for another half an hour. I heard that once Saw heard about the 'Songs Without Borders' project, he determined that the chance had come for him to speak out with regard to his brothers and sisters in refugee camps. He brought his newly-composed song to his two friends, the displaced Karen from Burma, in a border village. Teacher Eh Sho Neh, the keyboard player and a religious teacher who connects his world to God by music, found the song impressive as it seemed to talk about life like his. Another one is Teacher S'rai Yue, an electric guitar player who left his life as a teacher in a conflict area in Burma to be a farm laborer; he now teaches village kids music in free time instead. Both teachers then played and arranged the music for Saw to sing. Now, the song has been chosen by the selection committee despite its poor recording quality from a tiny handy-drive. The team knew they had to re-record it to make the work good enough to match with others in the album. In fact, Saw would love to take his friends to a good studio somewhere but it's not possible for both musicians to travel. But now they don't have to worry; here I am with them, and with great delight! The motorcycles stopped. I heard the sound of water. This place is a little wooden church on the bank of a stream. Teacher Eh Sho Neh brought us inside to work in front of the altar. With only a year's experience on the keyboard, he looked pretty cool! I heard that eight years ago, Teacher crossed the Moei River for a religious ceremony in Thai-Karen village and decided not to return to where there was no freedom. Determined to serve God in this small village church, he tried to save donations to buy one instrument each year so that children would have opportunities to learn and appreciate music. After almost four hours our work was done. The musicians seemed to be so excited with me that I felt a bit embarrassed. Teacher S'rai Yue mumbled that he wished he had a better guitar for a better sound. However, as a recorder myself, I'd like to tell him that his strong determination and sincerity gave greater result than any expensive instruments. Teacher S'rai Yue apologized that he didn't have as much time to practice because his time was mostly spent earning a living for his family. Yet, to me, his skill he learned from a teacher inside Burma was more than enough to fulfill this dream.
Finally, I was put back in a box to get ready for another journey. Under the hot sun we were on motorbikes for another two hours, passing a giant refugee camp that was fenced by barbwire fences. I heard the sound of refugees carrying donated bamboos to repair their shelters, the sound of sand dancing in the wind, and the whisperings of suffering and hope from behind the fence.
I saw a little bird flying over the fence and disappearing from my eyes. I wish I were the bird that flies beyond the barbwires, To go see the world out there, To go far, to be free, to free sky* Law Plah is a primary teacher in a displaced village school. His music talent has impressed Saw for a long time. Once the 'Fly beyond the Barbwires' won the selection, Saw knew that the song would complete only with Teacher Law Plah's acoustic guitar and Karen verses. Law Plah jumped for the offer after hearing the Karen brief translation of the song; the lyrics spoke to his heart. Again, we worked in a wooden church next to a small stream. This church was smaller and had no chairs. While waiting for all settings, I drifted away with the sound of the running stream, of the firewood chopping and dinner cooking. They were the sound of the sunset time. Although Teacher Law Plah was not familiar with a big headset or with playing along already recorded lines; he was so great and natural. His voice echoed powerfully as if it had wings to fly - and it was flying to the out world. I was delighted to hear that he would also like to record his own songs, too. I was so proud to be the one who would bring the music of an artist who was kept behind the invisible fence to the world. Strumming his fingers on the old guitar strings, Teacher Law Plah sang out the beauty of his homeland. I could feel his love, I could hear his heart cry. Under the starlight, they played all the recorded work today through a small loudspeaker of a notebook computer. The tiny loudspeaker threw out mumbling noise yet the music was clear enough to touch everyone's hearts. Two villagers came up to the house and sat listening quietly. One of the two was in a bad shape, worrying about his motorcycle that was confiscated in front of the refugee camp. Yet, I could feel his appreciation. The song cried out to his soul. Late at night, at Teacher Law Plah's hut, I lay down listening to their conversation. The situation on the Burma side wasn't good. There were whispers that the Burmese troops might attack after the Karen National Day's celebration. They also talked about others they wished could be there with them, including Teacher Eh Sho Neh and S'rai Yue. Teacher Law Plah then asked to hear all the songs that would be included in the 'Without Borders' album. Listening to each one, Saw said he was so proud that his song would be part of this piece as all the songs were so exceptional and meaningful. Teacher Law Plah said that although he couldn't understand theThai lyrics much, he could feel the sense of friendship and care that the Thai friends tried to convey. There was also one song that started with "Mingalaba", which was a greeting in Burmese, and ended with "Je-su-tin-ba-de Yodia" - thank you very much, Thai people. There, Teacher Law Plahed nodded his head slowly. Music has declared its space beyond all boundaries of ethnic races, nationalities and languages. I heard Teacher Law Plah say that he wished to make an album of his own with his students. He recorded some by Saw's cassette recorder and asked if we could make it into CD. I knew that wouldn't bring great quality and secretly hoped that the person who borrowed me this time would bring me back here again. I hoped I would get the honor of bringing their voices of hopes to fly beyond the barbwire fence to the world.
The life of human is valuable. Isn't a life of mine valuable too? I have the right to fly. I have the right to do. As a freeman, let me fly high. Note: Thanks Suwichanon Rattanpimol, who allowed this old MD to fly. * Lyrics "Flying beyond the Barbwire Fence"

"The new generations today are the offspring of the previous generations. If you have Lanna scripts at home and you can't read, Please don't sell them as garbage. You can leave them here for this Lanna Traditional Wisdom School. We have an ancient script study center and we will read them. For the other new generations who have no historic stuffs left at home, if you want to know more about our Lanna roots, you are welcome here to study the scripts…" That afternoon, I sat in the Lanna Traditional Wisdom School, Chiang Mai. It was a peaceful place surrounded by big, old trees that spread their branches out providing good shade. Traditionally decorated Lanna architecture brought me back to the glorious old day that seem to be forgotten. Oh, yes. I had an appointment with "Mala Kamchan", an activist and a S.E.A. Write award-winning writer who also is the principal of the Lanna Traditional Wisdom School. As the son of Father Chan and Mother Noi from Pan District, Chiang Rai Province, he has been familiar with Lanna scripts, which could be found in ancient palm leaf books, since he was little. "When I was young, I loved to hang around my grandmother. I loved spening time in monasteries and serving the monks. Then I became a novice and learnt Lanna script from the Abbot. After that time until now I've always found time to learn and read it on my own." Learning Lanna script led him to discover the values of traditional Lanna poems, history, and customs. Sadly, at present, the Lanna palm leaf books and Lanna script have become rare and almost extinct. "When did they start to disappear?" I asked. "About 50 years ago the first Primary Education Act was enacted during the first National Economic and Social plan. Before that, the state's compulsory education hadn't reached here [Chiang Rai] and the monastery's education also taught Lanna script. The first primary education curriculum in 1961 undermined this system with the mandate that all children must receive education from government schools only. Monastery education wasn't credible. Now 50 years later, it's sad to see that the only people who know the value of these [traditional] things are the elderly and exhausted. When they pass away, their children who haven't realized the value of these ancient books put them away in their parents' coffins, throw them away in the river or sell them to waste collectors. The effort to bring Lanna script back to life started in nearly 20 years ago. It helps a bit though things can't be as prosperous as before." "So, you mean the state's structure has undermined Lanna culture?" I needed his opinion. "Well, I don't want to blame them for this. If we were the government, we probably would have done the same. The fact is that we ourselves couldn't preserve our identity and that's why here we are. People with true knowledge will look at this with understanding and will attempt to do better. But those without understanding will see things with resentment. I myself look at the issue in both dark and light side" "What do you expect for teaching traditional wisdom?" "I only hope that when I am too old and too tired to continue with this work, there will be someone to stand in my place; just like I did when my teachers became too old and too exhausted. This is so that our wisdom and knowledge will not be lost. It will pass on and live. That's my hope." "Anyway, the learning process and relationship between teachers and students has changed. Life today is so rushed that we are not able let the process go naturally. In the past, if you wanted to learn, you had to go to the teachers' houses, staying there to provide your labour and help him or her do whatever work they needed. Then the teachers would consider what suits the person best. It took a long time for a teacher to decide what to teach to one particular person. But in this modern, rushed age education must be organized in courses. Relationships and bonding between teachers and students are not as tight as before." Yet, Mala Khamchan had no fear of such change. He said that culture was like a river; alive and endlessly flowing. "Culture is not rigid and fixed. It has been flowing from the root to present and will be from present to the future. Look at the Ping River. From Chiang Mai to Nakhon Sawan province it flows and we call it Ping River. When it merges with other rivers, we call it Chao Phraya River; a river of strong current that it eats all things up. This is similar to our Lanna culture. It remains, but transforms and might also be a bit contaminated. "If you want to experience the Ping, you must go to its origin where it starts. Don't only look at the Ping after it has flowed through the whole city of Chiang Mai and assume the whole river is polluted. Another question - when it is polluted, how will Chiang Mai people cooperate to make it nice and pure again?" This speaks the mind of Mala Kamchan, the headmaster of the Lanna Traditional Wisdom School. A teacher himself, he told us stories, but ended our lesson with a twist, questions inspired and remaining in our minds.

A Classroom without a Name Photo story by Suchat Sukprasit 1. At first glance, Mae Sai was a very lively place with people and vehicles on the main street. It looked modern and rich; the wide blue sky was so bright and refreshing. Walking along the lines of shops that continue endlessly along the street, I passed by crowds from different walks of life, languages and clothes that expressed unique cultures; I felt the harmony, no matter whether permanent or temporary, amidst such diversity. In less than a minute's time, it was as if I encountered a thick, rich book. Yes. It's only a flip-through, skim-through of a book of illustrations, captions, headlines and introductions, not a thorough reading of every line and word. 2. That river. Stepping on the bridge across the river, I started to notice different eyes; those of the uniformed authorities, merchants and even beggars. I reached the other end of the bridge and landed on another country's soil to meet the eyes of my neighbors. Actually, these same pictures could be seen in Bangkok ? glue addicted kids or beggars, but the difference was the very openness of their expressions. There was no hiding as if such practice was abnormal. Or, was it freedom? As a passer-by, I could not assess the situation more than the eyes saw and the heart felt. This is such a big book of sensitive stories; one could not understand from one round of quick reading; significant content would be missed. Learners who only have books as their teacher, like me, might interpret it all wrong. 3. Tachilek was full of hundreds of small shops in lines of box-like buildings on both sides of the street that were connected like a web - a labyrinth of which I was unable to visit all corners.
The traders here were of various ethnicities. However, Thai language seemed to be a medium for all; buyers are mostly Thai people and sellers need to negotiate in Thai fluently. The charm of Tachilek market was the negotiation and sales solicitation right in front of and around the prospective buyers. The sellers offered amazingly low prices that cannot be compared to anywhere on earth, and calmly chewed betel nuts while relaxing and waiting for decisions before making another offer to prospect buyers, to find the price that would make he or she satisfied. Satisfaction lies only in successful negotiation. Of course, there are both successes and failures; I mean that both sellers and buyers hold equal chances of success and failure. 4. I tried to take impressive photos like those documented in my heart, but there were limitations. Yes, I have to admit that I was paranoid. I floated back to the information regarding political instability of the neighboring country. Wild was my heart. Only when I came back to waiting for other friends at the immigration checkpoint was it that I realized my mind was misguided and biased. On the bridge crossing from one country to the other, I could see great scenes of both sides: roads, markets and people. To meet the eyes of the river, of which I didn't know the name, brought me back to the calamity. Both sides of a coin are of equal value; lives on the two sides of the river are too. How is it that lack of opportunity to become friends leads to paranoia regarding the people that we do not befriend? I don't expect the river to give me the answer. I crossed back to stand on the Thai side. The sky remained a shimmering blue. While my feet took me away from the check point, I felt as if I was walking out of a big classroom - a classroom with no name, with a big textbook in my hand. "Teacher, I will return to submit my homework!" That's what my heart told me.

Children of the King of the Sun "Kham Jongtan", a Dara-ang or Palong man in his 70s, has been through some hard life experiences. In the battle field and during displacement, he did everything to keep himself and his people alive; putting insects found on the way in their mouths, picking up any green leaves as food as a replacement for rice, covering his companions' dead bodies with banana leaves before rushing further away. For over 20 years, he has wandered to seek a land of freedom and peace. He and his folks had to be patient, compromise and use traditional wisdom as a tool to go on. Today his family and his folks have settled down in Thailand. Here are parts of his life.
"We Dara-ang have never been in a battle against anyone. We only run away from fighting. We hate violence. After U Aung San died, wild soldiers who were against the Burmese military came threatening us. Burmese soldiers also came. They ate our chicken and pigs for free. They burnt down our crops. They ordered the village headman to recruit porters to carry weapons and guns. Some of these porters have never come back to us. I was also a porter. I was also in battles, but I managed to escape. "The Dara-ang from Doi Lai walked all of three days and nights without taking a rest, but the big group like us with the elderly and small children took about two weeks as we had to stop on the way. We came to stay on the Thai border, near Doi Ang Kang. There we heard that His Majesty the King would visit the royal project in Doi Ang Kang so about 200 of us went there to see him. His Majesty allowed us to live in Thailand. I remember it well. He said, "If you want to stay, stay." He also gave us 5,000 baht to build a monastery. We were so happy. At that time, we believed that everything would be okay. So we moved in Thailand and set up Naw Lae Village. But fighting was still going on and there were not enough land for everyone, so we moved to Chiang Dao. I collected 100 baht from each family; 20 families for 2,000 baht, and bought 10 rai (1.6 hectares) of land from the Thais. This is our Pang Dang village. "But one day, we were arrested. It was January 1989. Twenty nine men were charged with illegal entery into the country and for invading the forests. They got an 11 year sentence but the court reduced it to five years. Later they received royal amnesty. But after being released for a short while, again in March 1998, 56 of us were arrested again for the same charges. My nephew and his parents from Naw Lae who were visiting me were also arrested. I wanted to help them but I didn't know how. I felt so bad. Now the case is still in court. "Of course, think about good side, there's something better. Now some villagers obtained Thai citizenship. My children, too. There's only me left as the officials said I wasn't born in Thailand. Anyway, I can live here like this. I told my people to live by the rules and do not destroy the forests. We teach our children not to get close to drugs, and not to bring more people to our community. Just live together peacefully. I teach them our culture. I told both good and bad experiences. I always tell the young people that we are now living in Thailand, so we have to respect the rules here. We have to look after the land here. We conserve the forest and nature. We grow forests every year. We make fire walls. We build a small traditional dam to have clean and clear water all year round. We are in the watershed. If we don't protect the nature, lowland people will have no water to use.
"Now that my village became a tourist attraction, it's good to earn additional income but problems naturally follow. You see, we started to have conflicts over money. I see souvenir shop owners fighting. Some even bug foreign tourists and it isn't nice. In fact, our culture is as simple as that of the northern Thais. I always tell the young people to keep the good deeds of the Dara-ang. But more recently, they didn't listen. They started to learn to speak bad words, rude words from outsiders. In the past there was no school and children learned only from their parents. Now the young people think that they already have teachers at schools and they became smarter than their parents who are illiterate. But I think we always have culture and tradition as our guideline. In the past, there was no law so people had to live by culture and tradition. But now it seems more complicated. We may need the laws to be used with our customary rules. "I always worry about the people inside Burma; be they Burman, Shan or Dara-ang, we are all brothers and sisters. I don't know how many have died since I left. I have just realized that there are a large number of refugees in border camps. They must be suffering. Even us who have settled are suffering. However, humans must keep on fighting for the better. There will always be problems to solve. For the Dara-ang of Pang Dang, we have to try for peace and happiness in our community. Kham Jongtan, 70, Dara-ang, was born in Baan Pulong, Kengtung, Shan State of Burma. He led the Dara-ang villagers on a journey to Thailand and was permitted to live in the Doi Ang Kang Royal Project in 1982 before moving further to his current village in Chiang Dao District of Chiang Mai. At present, Kham is still a natural leader to the 245 people from 48 families who look to him, through their sufferings of displacement to new hopes - standing firmly and peacefully in this rapidly changing world.
A study published in the "Gazetteer of Upper Burman and the Shan States" in 1900 explained the legend about the birth of the Dara-ang that they were the children of the King of the Sun, who chose to live in a high and cold place near Sun River, north of Shan State, Burma. The Dara-ang are great travelers and usually live together as a big family. Later on, their children migrated to the south of Shan State and live peacefully with the Shan people. Another academic pointed that most of the Dara-ang were victims of war rather than warriors. Information from "Newly- Settled Communities Strategies in Accessing Resources" by Sakunee Natpoolwat published in 1991.

Human Education Genocide is in fact not a new phenomenon of this world. If we look into histories, we may see such tragedy occur periodically, all so severe in their impacts to societies that the damage takes generations to heal. The Thai people's painful memory is not an ethnic cleansing, but the brutal persecution of a group that maintained particular political beliefs. The similarity between both types of conflict is that people were made to believe that the other side, who are also human, are not the same kind of human. Ancient peoples in the Balkan might not believe that one day it would be possible that their descendants of different ethnicities and religions could kill and persecute each other in such a tragic way. Ancient tribes in present day Rwanda might not be able to imagine that tribal conflicts could finally expand into genocide. From news report or movies, we can see the brutality in battlefields. But the internal war, within one's mind after the physical war has ended, may be difficult for one who never experienced to imagine. Traumas and hatreds from war are not only dead ashes; they are capable of sparking into a full-scale fire, anytime. In the past, the world's community usually paid attention only to humanitarian relief and aids. However, history lessons insisted us to walk further by turning to see the stage where humans can kill 'others' in the belief that they are not the same and equal humans. Moreover, some saw that the past mistakes were resulted partly from men's decisions; ones that were usually based on violent thought. Therefore efforts were also made to reduce paternalist culture which is risky in that it can lead society in violent circles. Although the physical war in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda might have ended, hatred between ethnic groups has not faded. For the past few years, efforts have been made in both Rwanda and the Balkan countries in order to heal their wounds. Advocacy for non-violent culture, promotion of positive attitudes towards human diversity, peace and a human rights ideology has been made via both the formal and informal education system. Educators see the urgent need to change the history curriculum which used to focus on chauvinism and warriors/leaders against enemies; one that made ordinary people believe in an idea that certain ethnic or religious groups were naturally born enemies, into one of ordinary people who used to live together peacefully. These new history curriculums were designed to advocate the pride of human diversity, the value of united diverse human groups, and to lead students to learn to know, accept and understand each other. The phrase 'Our neighbors-Our enemies' was erased from text books. Students from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds were encouraged to join in the same classes to learn one another's history, and understand human rights of others rather than just protecting their own rights. However, it will take time before the new generations' perceptions are given a chance. Kosovo, of which the majority of people are Albanians, recently declared independence from the Republic of Serbia, while the Serbian government and the Serbs who are a minority in Kosovo province responded furiously. One can predict that the separation might not be smooth; independence for one country is of course a celebration for its citizens, but it is also impossible for humans to live a life next to the neighbors they consider forever enemies. For Thailand that conflict grows stronger with pictures painted of those who are 'different' as enemies, it looks like we urgently need peace and human rights education, as well as new open-minded history lessons in our curriculum. Give peace education a chance, before we make ourselves victims of our own education system.

"On our first day of high school, we had only three things in common: we hated school, we hated our teacher, and we hated each other." This is part of a teenager's diary that I sniffed and found. These 14-15 year-old kids saw themselves at war. Everyday walking out from home, they knew they might get shot. Nobody knew how the war started and nobody cared. They only knew they had to protect their people's territories. They were warriors and they believed one day they would die warriors. This isn't the diary of a kind of war we knew well. It's an essay written by one of the Wilson High School students, not far from Los Angeles. They, the African Americans, the Latin Americans and the Asian Americans (especially those former Cambodian refugees), lived in suppressed communities; they were labeled as 'not worth teaching'. It was assumed none would be able to make it to senior high school -the best they could be, if not a gang member, was a gang leader. This is a true story. The story starts just two years after the 1992 LA riots, which stemmed from long-time injustice and discrimination against colored communities and is most remembered by the impunity of four policemen who brutally beat Rodney King, a black taxi driver. This tragedy and the resulting anger expanded the wounds between people of different 'colors' with 53 deaths, over 2,000 injuries and cities burnt and destroyed. Wilson High School is part of a voluntary integration program that aimed to promote equality and conflict resolution. But whoever walked in there might shudder upon seeing the children so obviously separated according to the color of their skin: white, black, brown and yellow. Moreover, anger regarding the school's education records being dropped because of these 'unteachable' kids and their poor performance, could be felt from all teachers. I just came back from a school visit in Mahachai, close to Bangkok. It was one of very few schools that opened its arms for migrant children to study with Thai kids. No, no visible violence there. But I heard a 10-year old Mon kid say that, "Lots of Thai kids in my neighborhood. But they don't care about me so I don't care about them. Here in school I don't dare to play with Thai kids. My mum said if I had a quarrel or a fight with them, there will be no place on earth for us to live." Wagging my tail sadly, I became to understand that although peaceful integration could happen naturally, where wounds have been, a middle person or a healer is probably needed‌ In Wilson, one teacher walked in to 'open ways' for children to make changes for themselves on their own. Erin Gruwell or Ms. G is a 24-year old white woman. All she did was to recognize her students' human dignity, practice patience for any resistance and attempt to walk into their painful hearts. Most importantly, she made her classroom a 'safe haven' for them to express themselves without fear of being judged. Then, she opened the door that led the kids to the outside world, to learn to see 'similarities' instead of focusing on 'differences' between humans. "The white always think that they must receive respect just because they are white. Of course, I didn't know you. But I know what you are capable of doing. The white policemen arrested us just because they felt like it. The white did whatever to us just because they felt like it!" I heard a Latin American girl shouted at Ms. G. All of them saw that their lives would be better without 'the others'. The turning point was the day a 'brown' boy sent his drawing mocking a black boy's physical appearance around. Ms. G held the paper in her hand, emotionally comparing the way one make 'the others' as something lower than humans in the same way the Nazis did to the Jewish people during Holocaust. There, I guessed the students' minds were busy trying to find words to argue, but their curiosity won. A boy asked reluctantly, 'What you just said, the Holocause, what is that?"
My tail sank just like Ms. G's heart. These kids had learnt nothing. No one had heard about the Holocaust, while everyone had been shot at and their loved ones had died out of violence. Most had been in prison or juvenile house, (including a Cambodian-American girl who said a refugee camp is the same as prison) Despite their weak reading skills, these kids found themselves attached to the literature that Ms. G chose for them. From 'The Diary of Anne Frank', they felt that the Jewish girl who hid herself from the Nazi in a cellar understood them, although she was from different race and lived in another part of the world in a different period of time. The students wrote letters to Meip Gies, the woman who helped hide Anne Frank in her cellar. Then they did what no one would believe; they worked together to organize fundraising activities to get travel expense for their hero to visit the school. I used my long ears to wipe my tears away, when seeing this old woman, escorted by a black boy, walking in the classroom slowly. At that moment, I believed, the kids all knew that if they were determined, nothing could be presumed impossible. The borderline of color was erased. The classroom became a home and a place where the students promised to themselves they would not let their lives follow the fate of the oppressed any longer. The Freedom Writers Diary is a collection of these students' essays. They wrote what they wanted to with no fear of being judged. They talked about gang fighting, about the dad who was arrested for no crime, about the cousin who was shot in front of their eyes, about the mom who was beaten everyday and about hopes and dreams. The name was inspired from the 'Freedom Riders', a movement of diverse peoples who challenged segregation in public transportation by traveling as one, and took all violent attacks peacefully. The book was made into a film 'Freedom Writers' by Richard LaGravenese - with Hilary Swank as Ms. G. Ms. G once said that 'the struggle for civil rights must start in the classroom, not in a court'. I heard that all the freedom writers have now graduated from universities. They and Ms. G founded the Freedom Writers Foundation to share the experiences and goals from their class to other high schools. It's just 'Doing what one had to do - do the right thing' as Miep Gies once told them. Then, I thought about the school, teachers, and the kids in Mahachai. A 7-year-old Shan boy told me he loved going to school. I asked him, "Really?" He replied, "Yes, so that I know the way back home." Woof! I hope that both adults and kids there will never give up 'doing what they have to do'. This time around I paid a visit to a young Karenni chef who has been residing in Thailand as a refugee. During the past several years, he has spent time adjusting to his new life, new town, foreign culture, and the many new ingredients for cooking. It surprised me that this young man, who could speak only minimal Thai language, knew all the correct names for vegetables and other ingredients in Thai. He explained that sellers at the market had taught him on a daily basis, "I only pointed a finger to the vegetable or ingredient I wanted, and they would tell me its name and teach me to pronounce it." The very first Thai words that he used to weave new-found relationships with the Thai people came from these lessons in the market. The science and art of cooking can be easily found in cook books or television programs. Yet for many of us, the basic cooking lessons are learnt from observing our parents and relatives in the kitchen. This young Karenni chef is the only man in his circle of friends who cooks. Despite the life in the refugee camp where nothing can be compared to home, kitchen lessons learnt from his mom continue to remind him of his Karenni identity and have made him 'the man' for all the empty stomachs to call on. Lay-Ye-Seh looks like normal clear soup but the stock is not as clear as the Chinese style. It is great to sip with spicy chili paste. For the Karenni, a meal would not be complete without chili paste; even a simple mix of ground chili, garlic and salt is a welcome mouth-watering addition. Ingredients Pumpkin, snow peas (tua luntao) and other seasonal vegetables Pork or other meat; or one may skip if you can't find any Red onion, salt and pepper Instructions
• Dice pumpkin. Peel whole red onion. Clean and remove pea stems. • Bring water to a boil, add onion and pork. When it is bubbling, add diced pumpkin and boil until the pumpkin and onion softens. Add snow peas and wait until cooked. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Before our eyes, there is time At that moment I realized that the book I held in my hands did not end within the margins of a square of such width, length, and thickness. While I was reading the sentence before my eyes, I was also aware of the text and lines of the next page. Their forms were vague, but it does not mean that they did not exist. When I reached them, they became focused for a moment. I added them to the continuous flow of the story, but the sentences were quickly scattered. What remained was the stories weaved into my memory; their traces left in my feelings. A small island like Okinawa makes me feel serene. Its fastmoving clouds, playing with the angles of light, always create stunning sunsets which, I thought, were more beautiful than in anywhere else. In September 2007, at Tropical Beach in Ginowan Town, I heard the voices of one of the days that would become clouds flying across Kyushu, Kansai plain, to Tokyo. I was among 110,000 protesters who came together to express disagreement with the Japanese governments attempt at rewording the reference to World War II in school textbooks, sidestepping the responsibility for the Japanese military that forced Okinawan civilians to commit suicide before becoming a prisoner of the American soldiers. Originally, some of the textbooks contained phrases like "the Japanese army gave hand grenades to residents, making them commit mass suicide and kill each other", but the government's screening committee would rearrange it to "Mass suicides and killings took place among the residents using hand grenades given to them by the Japanese army", while some of the textbooks would simply delete the clause by the Japanese army. I do not want to admit it, but I cannot deny that a place with such breathtaking sunsets can be a place with such sorrow. A quarter of Okinawan civilians were killed in the only land battle that took place in Japan during WWII. Survivors of 1945 confirmed that before defeat, the Japanese army coerced civilians to kill themselves, while military-related persons continued to deny it. Writing history is not only about words or alphabets, which, if edited, deleted, or "wordplayed" a little bit, may be of little or no significance. School textbooks, however, are not only for children to read but involve memories and feelings. They relate stories that will be weaved into identities. What is read does not end in the book; before the eye, there is not only what we see but also the layers of time. Somebody once told me that she had traveled less because she wanted to find something new than to escape sorrow. We usually believe that the painful memories are best to be forgotten. But in Okinawa, it seems like pain should be remembered and inscribed, not out of vengeance, but as a reminder that something antithetical to life, such as war, should never happen again.
