THE OLDEST TOWN IN NORWAY, FAMOUS FOR THEIR VIKINGS... AND BOATRACING! Welcome to Tonsberg - Norway’s oldest seafaring city! The idea to organize the World Championship in the seafaring town Tønsberg is absolutely brilliant and almost historically accurate. In more than a thousand years the city has been harbour for Viking ships, merchant marine, yachting and now this - fast boats in a championship with good international participation.

We like that. Tønsberg has always had an open window to the world and its development is largely based on shipping. In the recent past, small boats have taken over, in Norway’s best marina. World Championship in the harbor here is particularly spectator-friendly. You can follow the World Championship the competitors’ speed control from minute to minute. Amidst this is Saga Oseberg, an exact copy of the most important findings from the Viking Age, found just outside the city in 1903. They meet old and new “maritime” in the same basin.
Tønsberg has always been a summer city. Many people simply have to visit our city to get into the right summer mode. In recent decades, the festivals put his good character in town. Here you can experience the Medieval Festival, Slottsfjell Festival, Pirate Festival, Viking Festival, Festival, Literature and Cathedral Festival.

It’s fair to say that when you walk around a UIM F2 race paddock you soon start rubbing shoulders with some of powerboat racing most single minded, determined racers, after all without that competitive nature is hard to see how you would ever succeed. So how do you take it a step further? Well one driver who thinks he’s found the answer is Frode Sundsdal, but it’s taken him a couple of attempts to hone the idea of running a round of the UIM F2 World Championship in his own back garden of Tønsberg. How do you go about turning that dream into reality? “Start by assembling a truly dedicated team of people” said Sundsdal. “Back in 2014 it occurred to me that the city of Tønsberg had all the right ingredients to make a superb venue to stage a powerboat race. So I went straight to the top by obtaining permissions from the Harbour Master, the Chief of Police and all the emergency services.” After the 2nd successful year with UIM F2 World Championship races in Tønsberg, with up to 50.000 spectators it’s evident that he was right. The pilot loves Tønsberg, and Tønsberg loves the pilots and the powerboat show. The volunteers works all year, to be part of the team - and the sponsor list is growing. It´s not just a powerboat show, it’s a city festival – we have activities for the kids, food festival and a great Boatshow. Honestly its one of the best weekends all season. The restaurants are fully booked, same with hotels – we host great conserts and everyone enjoys them self.

Tønsberg Boatrace established in 2013 by Frode Sundsdal. First edition was run in August 2014 in co-operation with the local motorcycle club, Re Motorsport. It was a city festival from day 1. By 2015 the city of Tønsberg was behind with all its departments, and 50.000 spectators enjoyed the show. In 2016, now the 3rd edition enjoyed also a full county and private sector support. With 120 + partners on the team, and growing, we are confident that we will create a great motorsport tradition in Tønsberg.
