BUILDING COMMUNITY

Leading by Example

Road to Redemption:

Jeffrey Drew By Michelle McCarthy Jeffrey Drew says his story is all too common—a teenager with big dreams of becoming a dancer moves to Hollywood at 17 and falls into all the wrong traps. Crystal meth, running the streets, drinking, prostitution. At age 23, Jeffrey was diagnosed with HIV. But in 1988, everything changed when he chose a life of sobriety—and service. He’s now a celebrated musical theater dancer who has performed in more than 25 musicals and the choreographer for the annual Best in Drag Show. Jeffrey teaches us to never give up and always give back. What made you want to get involved in the community? Back in the late ’80s, people were dying left and right. These amazing men opened my heart and spirit. We were all helping each other. I was a very broken young man. It gave my life purpose. It wasn't about things or a career; it was about love and service. Why do you think it’s important to be involved? Involvement turns into evolvement. Being involved in the community, being of service, giving one’s time and energy and helping others is what life's about. It isn't what you can get out of life, it’s what you can give. I don't want to be a taker in this life. Whatever small amount I can do, I'll try my best. How did you become involved with Best in Drag Show? I was involved with Battle for the Tiara in the mid-’90s. I was Lotta Slots, a former Miss Nevada. I won the pageant in 1998 by singing "Midnight at the Oasis" on a

16

live camel. [Laughs] The creator passed from AIDS the following year. Then Aid for AIDS came along, and Tom Pardoe and Patrick Rush asked if we'd do it again. I've been directing the show for the last two years. It’s a labor of love and keeps the friends that I've lost in my heart. What’s the most fun aspect of performing as Lotta Slots? Lotta taught me how to be a better human and a more compassionate man. I was this small, invisible, little man just going through life. Then people started remembering me in and out of drag. I'm a fearless performer. What I lack in talent and beauty, I make up for with heart and humor. I'm always gonna look like Patti LuPone on steroids! If I can get a laugh and a buck, I'm all yours. What’s the most enjoyable part of your involvement with BIDS? Being surrounded by these amazing men who so selflessly give their time, energy, creativity and joy. This group of people has helped raise more than $2 million. But truth be told, we laugh a lot, and humor heals! What’s it like to choreograph for guys who are doing drag for the first time? The best part is seeing their willingness. These men are fearless because they want to make a difference. I get to help them walk through the fear—in fourinch heels. What message do you want to get out there about the ongoing effort for AIDS prevention? The U.S. government has cut more than $80 million from the AIDS budget. It’s unacceptable to me that people are still struggling with having a quality life.

Aid for AIDS has more than 150 people on a waiting list for temporary housing and help. AIDS has become passé in the fundraising world. Celebrities have grown tired. We've lost so much of our community to the disease. It’s still here, people! It makes me so mad that it’s treated as this manageable disease. But we have an incredible group of people who support us year after year—people like Melanie Griffith, Kathy Kinney, Sara Ramirez, Holland Taylor, Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks. Kathy Griffin has been helping BIDS for 15 years. What other organizations are you a part of? Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Broadway Bares, APLA and PAWS. Another cause close to my heart is helping in the recovery of men with crystal meth addictions. And I helped out with the Drug and Alcohol Center here in WeHo. What motivates you to give back to the community? This is my community. I've been taught well that I can't keep this lucky life I have if I don't give back. It’s not about the recognition, and I don't do this alone. I have a great tribe I run with, and we all do this together. But I am very grateful.

Lunar Crash Site Named for Sally Ride NASA has named the lunar site where two spacecraft were intentionally crashed Dec. 17 after Sally Ride, a lesbian who was America's first woman in space, a NASA release states. The twin spacecrafts, "Ebb” and “Flow,” comprised the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory program and were flown into the moon after completion of their mission. "Sally was all about getting the job done, whether it be in exploring space, inspiring the next generation or helping make the GRAIL mission the resounding success it is today," said Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Maria Zuber, GRAIL principal investigator. “As we complete our lunar mission, we are proud we can honor Sally Ride’s contributions by naming this corner of the moon after her.” In addition to flying on the space shuttle, Ride served on the investigation panels for the Challenger and Columbia shuttle disasters, and also co-authored children's science books with partner Tam O’Shaughnessy. Texas Pastor Supports Uganda’s Stance on Homosexuality Baptist Pastor David Dykes of Tyler, Texas, recently went on Ugandan TV and urged that country to resist U.S. pressure to “recognize homosexual behavior,” Box Turtle Bulletin reported Dec. 17. The “Anti-Homosexuality Bill,” still pending in Uganda’s parliament after its introduction a few years ago,

calls for execution and other draconian punishments for homosexual acts. Besides the capital offense, the “offense of homosexuality” would carry a life sentence, and anyone who knew someone was gay and failed to report it to authorities within 24 hours would also be subject to incarceration. The measure would also

expand the definition of a homosexual act, which currently requires penetration, to include simply touching another person with homosexual intent. Dykes later told a local Texas TV station that he was unaware of the “Kill the Gays” bill when he made his comments in Uganda.

Newtown Massacre Puts Focus on NRA Gun control advocates are calling for new gun restrictions and placing indirect blame for the Dec. 14 massacre in Newtown, Conn., on the National Rifle Association, an organization of firearms owners and a powerful lobby with an absolutist view of the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment. “[T]he NRA has helped defeat common sense gun measures that polls show an overwhelming majority of gun owners support," a Dec. 18 release from progressive advocacy group CREDO Action says. “In order to stop the senseless killing, we must first stop the NRA." A Dec. 18 editor's note at the conservative Guns & Patriots website compares the tragedy to an airplane crash, arguing that no law could have prevented it. "The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again," according to a Dec. 18 NRA statement scheduling a “major news conference” for Dec. 21.

LGBT Leaders to House GOP: ‘Stop Spending on DOMA Defense’

Scalia Prompts Attention to Catholic Group U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s antiLGBT attitudes have long been known. But the high court's recent decision to hear the challenge to California's Proposition 8, along with a case testing the constitutionality of certain parts of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, has both prompted more anti-gay rhetoric from the justice and also called attention to a Catholic group that urges gays to abstain from sex, according to a Dec. 18 post at the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) website. Apart from likening opposition to homosexuality to opposition to murder during a Dec. 10 appearance at Princeton University, a Dec. 13 op-ed in the Los Angeles Times points out Scalia’s apparent "discomfort with the idea that there is such a thing as a gay or lesbian person," and his belief that homosexuality is conduct, not identity. This appears to be a central premise of Courage, a Catholic group in which Scalia’s son, Paul Scalia, a priest, is involved. According to GLAAD, "technically not one of those so-called 'ex-gay’ programs," Courage teaches that gays and lesbians should remain abstinent. In a 2005 article in First Things magazine, Paul Scalia criticized the labeling of high school students as "gay," and argued against the Vatican's use of the term "homosexual person" because it "suggests that homosexual inclinations somehow determine, which is to say confine, a person's identity."

Justice Antonin Scalia

The “Twelve Steps of Courage” are adapted from those of Alcoholics Anonymous, requiring members to admit that they are "powerless over homosexuality,” and that, consequently, their lives are "unmanageable," and that a higher power can restore them to "sanity" and remove their "defects of ... character" and “shortcomings.” Courage’s website does not appear to include overall membership numbers, but lists chapters in 11 countries outside the United States, and in 35 states, with 10 chapters in California.

Last year, after President Barack Obama's Justice Department announced that it would no longer defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act in court because the administration believed it to be unconstitutional, the Republicancontrolled House of Representatives picked up the ball and began paying for the statute's defense with public funds. Now, with the U.S. Supreme Court having agreed to review one of several cases appealed to it in which parts of DOMA had been held unconstitutional, and with money for defense apparently having run dry or nearly so, House Republicans appear to have quietly refilled the tank. According to a Dec. 13 post at the progressive political blog Think Progress, House Administration Committee Chairman Dan Lungren, R-Calif., who lost his seat in the November election, "secretly approved a $500,000 increase to a contract with a private law firm to defend [DOMA] in federal court. While the increase was approved in September, neither the public nor the Democratic House minority was informed until this week, Roll Call reports. The contract now authorizes Bancroft PLLC informer Solicitor General Paul Clement (R) to spend up to $2 million ... to defend DOMA— the second increase to what was originally a $1 million cap.” On Dec. 18, LGBT leaders wrote to the House Republican leadership calling for an end to the funding of the DOMA defense. “Spending $2 million—and counting—on harming LGBT people and wasting precious time and resources that should be spent on more important issues is not the best way to serve the interests of the American people," the letter reads. "We strongly urge you to take a leadership role on this critical issue and stop pouring taxpayer dollars into a law that discriminates against Americans."

Richard Adams, Pioneer for Binational Couples and Marriage Equality, Dies at 65 By Karen Ocamb On Dec. 17, Richard Adams died after a brief illness. He was 65, and for 41 of those years, he profoundly loved and fought for the right to live with Australian-born Tony Sullivan. Neither set out to be pioneers in the movement for binational couples and marriage equality. The couple met at the Closet Bar in Los Angeles in 1971 and were soon living together, according to information from ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives. In the United States on a tourist visa, Sullivan tried all legal options to stay, but by April 1975, the INS had initiated deportation proceedings. However, he was granted a continuance to file for political asylum. In a twist of fate, they discovered that the state of Colorado was issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples and dashed to Boulder to be married on April 21 by a clerk, followed by another ceremony performed by Universal Fellowship of the Metropolitan Community Church’s Robert A. Sirico and Freda Smith. (They had already been married in L.A. by UFMCC founder Rev. Troy Perry.) Now civilly and religiously married, Adams filed a petition with the local Los Angeles District office of the INS to grant Sullivan permanent residence as the spouse of a U.S. citizen. The petition was denied with just one sentence: "You have failed to establish that a bona fide marital relationship can exist between two faggots." Adams filed a lawsuit arguing that the denial violated his right to equal protection under the U.S.

Constitution. Meanwhile, the INS put Sullivan's deportation hearing on hold, and when it resumed again a month after Ronald Reagan became president, Sullivan applied for a suspension of deportation, claiming deportation would cause the couple extreme hardship. The application was denied, and Sullivan appealed. The Board of Immigration Appeals denied his appeal, saying Adams was not "a qualifying relative to whom hardship may be shown under the express provisions of the statue." Attorney David M. Brown appealed the BIA's ruling in Adams v. Howerton, the first federal lawsuit demanding recognition of a samesex marriage and the first to challenge INS discrimination against gay binational couples. They lost all subsequent marriage and immigration deportation appeals but were thrilled last August when the Obama administration announced a deportation policy shift that would look at “the totality of the circumstances presented in individual cases, including whether an individual has close family ties to the United States as demonstrated by his or her same-sex marriage or other longstanding relationship to a United States citizen.” “Richard was always kind, and his heart was full of appreciation for the small steps we

took together in the long campaign to achieve full marriage equality,” immigration attorney Lavi Soloway of The DOMA Project told Frontiers. “As I got to know him and Tony personally, their steadfast love for each other and the courage of their convictions became a tremendous source of inspiration to me. I was with Richard this past Saturday as we prepared yet one more round in this fight; this time our focus was on the Defense of Marriage Act. Richard made clear that after four decades, the cause of marriage equality and immigration rights was still the same. He was still fighting for the love he and Tony shared. Richard never gave up on the belief that justice would prevail, and he never waited for others to do the job. He is one of the heroes on whose shoulders we all stand as we carry on the fight for full equality.” The family requests that, in honor of Richard's commitment to same-sex marriage, donations be made to a nearly completed feature documentary film, Limited Partnership, chronicling the life-long fight for equal marriage rights of Richard Adams and Tony Sullivan. Tax-deductible donations can be made through the International Documentary Association at limitedpartnershipmovie.com.

Will National Stonewall Democrats Fold This Year? By Karen Ocamb In early December, National Stonewall Democrats Executive Director Jerame Davis distributed a dire fundraising email asking for help. The partisan Democratic organization founded in 1998 by Rep. Barney Frank is facing a year-end budget deficit of more than $30,000. “That doesn’t sound like a huge number until you consider that it’s about 25 percent of our operating income for this year,” Davis told Frontiers in a recent phone interview. “Our total operating income for the year has been somewhere between $120,000-130,000 total, which is about half of what our minimum operating budget has been over the years. We cut things back to the bare minimum a year ago—reduced down to one staff member, basic services, and eliminated or reduced a number of programs to fit within that budget because that was the high water mark of what we would be able to raise in 2012 comfortably.” But the exciting Democratic Convention— to which they helped recruit 490 LGBT delegates—ended up hurting the organization. Money that Davis expected to flow to Stonewall to help with LGBT Democratic messaging and national and local ground organizations ended up going to Obama for America. “Obama’s re-election was obviously the hottest race in the nation,” Davis said. “But it was sucking money out of everybody’s pocket,” as were other high-profile campaigns, such as the marriage battles and

Tammy Baldwin’s historic run for the U.S. Senate. But Davis didn’t want to see Stonewall’s financial troubles as a bad headline detracting from the 2012 elections. Davis, who took over as executive director in January 2012 after contentious, disturbing internal squabbles, said Stonewall has faced previous financial woes. But he wholeheartedly believes that Stonewall serves a national purpose for the LGBT community that could not be fulfilled by either well-intentioned people in the Democratic National Committee or other LGBT organizations. “Who validates the DNC?” Davis asked rhetorically. He noted that the DNC chair and much of the staff change every two years and may not be as pro-equality as the LGBT community expects. He cited previous DNC Chair Tim Kaine as an example of a chair who supported “relationship equality” instead of marriage equality. “Someone has to push them,” Davis said, adding that it can’t be someone whose primary loyalty is to whomever signs the paycheck. And there has to be some independent LGBT organization willing to push the DNC to enforce the inclusion rule to recruit LGBT delegates when state Democratic parties want to backslide. But first and foremost, Davis said, Stonewall is a partisan voice for LGBT Democrats. “We’re the only national LGBT Democratic organization in the country. There are two national Republican organizations—the Log Cabin Republicans and GOProud—although, of course, a lot of

people look at GOProud as a performance troupe and not an actual organization. But they do have money and staff,” Davis said. “While a lot of people view our traditional LGBT organizations as left-leaning or in the Democrats’ pockets, the fact remains that as 501(c)(3)s—as most of them are—they cannot be partisan.” It’s a fair point. Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin cannot go one-on-one with Log Cabin’s conservative Clarke Cooper in a hard partisan manner. “We don’t have that burden. We are a Democratic organization. We are Democrats,” Davis said. Davis thinks the Victory Fund’s endorsement of openly gay Republican Richard Tisei is another good example of why the LGBT community needs a partisan organization like National Stonewall Democrats. “While Richard Tisei met the Victory Fund’s criteria for endorsement, he wasn’t necessarily the best choice in that race, and he wasn’t necessarily the best choice for the LGBT community in that race. He was running against John Tierney, who’s an incumbent Democrat and always voted well on LGBT issues—he’s always been a supporter of ours locally and in Congress. It’s not always a good thing to replace a staunch ally with an LGBT person just because we can.” But, Davis pointed out, there are other overarching issues of importance, such as Tisei’s probable vote for John Boehner to remain as House Speaker, “who’s now spent $2 million of taxpayer money defending DOMA, which has been declared unconstitutional by our president. So why would an LGBT organization give John Boehner another vote in his caucus? That’s a legitimate issue, and it’s worthy of being discussed, and LGBT voters and Massachusetts voters should know that not every LGBT organization or LGBT person supports this LGBT Republican who’s running for office, because there are other issues involved here. I think the Victory Fund does a lot of great and important work. But that race in particular shows the shortcomings of deciding your endorsement criteria strictly on identity politics.” Though Davis said he was still “holding out hope” that Stonewall will be able to fill the budget gap, that’s probably not going to happen. The board is meeting as Frontiers goes to press, and though the outcome is uncertain, the most logical expectation would be for the board to mothball the existing organization, set up some sort of credible caretaker board to pay off the debt and restructure and relaunch in time for the 2014 elections. Stay tuned.

U.S. Ambassador David Huebner Talks About the Importance of Social Media By Karen Ocamb Time magazine named President Barack Obama its “Person of the Year,” and in an interesting interview, Obama revealed that he’s proud of his contributions to the LGBT movement— and that he discusses LGBT issues with his daughters in their private time. “One of the things that I’m very proud of during my first four years is I think I’ve helped to solidify this incredibly rapid transformation in people’s attitudes around LGBT issues—how we think about gays and lesbians and transgender persons,” Obama told Time. “A lot of that just has to do with the fact that if you talk to Malia, the idea of making an anti-gay remark at her school is just unimaginable. They just don’t get that.” Obama is expected to make more good LGBT appointments in his second term as he reshuffles his administration. On Dec. 21, Obama

Huebner

announced his nomination of Sen. John Kerry as Secretary of State to replace the retiring Hillary Clinton. But before she goes, it should be noted that—thanks in large part to Clinton— the State Department has been a leader in human rights and recognition of LGBT rights. Among those doing important diplomatic work—albeit generally without the headlines— is a brilliant gay attorney from Los Angeles, David Huebner, who’s been serving as America’s ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa since 2009. Huebner, who many LGBT Angelenos know from his work with GLAAD, attended the recent Victory Institute’s LGBT Leadership Conference in San Diego, where he talked about the importance of effective leadership and how “very effective human rights leadership percolates upward, not just downward.” Huebner talked to Frontiers about his innovative use of social media as a tool for such engagement in his post at the U.S. embassy in Wellington, New Zealand. “I’m very focused on current tools of communication. Diplomacy is simply communication and persuasion,” Huebner said. “There’s no reason to keep using 19th century tools. So what we’ve done in Wellington is build what I think might be the most vibrant social media platform in the State Department. I blog, myself. We have a sports blog. We’re about to roll out a science diplomacy blog. We have multiple Facebook and Twitter feeds—but that’s the just the start of it. We’re experimenting with Instagram and Pinterest and several other platforms to see if they actually can be used for diplomatic communication.” The result has been amazing. Huebner gets 150,000 unique hits each time he posts something on his blog. “We are now communicating with hundreds of thousands of people who in the past would never have gotten anywhere near an American embassy, would never have seen any American embassy messaging. ... Most of those new constituents—those new consumers are people under the age 30, or they’re from minority groups who would never otherwise be included. So the social media is part of our larger, whole society outreach program.” Huebner said that his use of social media is being watched by other embassies. “We’re

not treating social media as a separate program or as a purely social program. We’re integrating all of our programs together,” he said. Huebner uses the blog to promote tourism and educational opportunities at different American universities, and is “experimenting with it as a tool of commercial promotion, as a tool of human rights promotion. I did a series, for example, on trafficking in persons. And we are seeing effects ... [which] leads to changes in attitudes.” Social media also has significant practical uses. During the big February 2011 earthquake, a diplomatic team was in Christ Church for a conference. “For hours, the telephone lines were down and there was no way to communicate. What we ended up doing was using Twitter very effectively to locate missing Americans, to communicate information. So we use our Twitter, in particular, for emergency broadcasting of information.” In fact, Huebner used Twitter to locate Richard Armitage, former Deputy Secretary of State under President Reagan, who had wandered off. Huebner’s longtime partner, Dr. Duane McWaine, lives with him and has assumed the duties of the diplomatic spouse. “Duane accompanies me on trips when there’s a function with a spouse; in Wellington, he accompanies me to all our events. We interact for what we are, which is a couple that just passed its 23rd wedding anniversary. And I find that even people who might have different political views on that bundle of issues are accepting of a visible, approachable, successful couple that happens to be composed of two men,” Huebner said. “I see the LGBT community in a transition from it being an exceptional circumstance to being the gay Speaker of the House in a statehouse or the gay ambassador or the gay Senator, and rapidly toward a position where Tammy Baldwin is just a highly effective Senator who happens to be a lesbian. Where John Pérez is a highly effective Speaker of the [California] Assembly who just happens to be gay,” Huebner said. “And that’s where I see us heading. And that’s a great place for all Americans, because it means our best and brightest—whatever their demographic, whatever their orientation, whatever race or gender—are contributing to the advancement of the country.”

His musical persona—built on a fun throwback sound, lyrical candor and gorgeous, deep-register vocals—has of late been praised across the board. His second full-length album, Free Dimensional, released in October, has been touted as superb by the likes of Pitchfork, SPIN, NME, Billboard, MTV and the New York Times. Grammy.com referred to him as “one of the bright new acts in music,” and we hereby designate him one of the year’s most fascinating people. Born John O’Regan, Diamond Rings is the fashion-forward stage presence behind some of the most mature pop tracks in recent memory. As an artist, his ability to weave emotional complexity and existentialism with modern musical tropes is astounding. Whether a track is written to be bubbly or brooding, Diamond Rings has showcased an uncanny ability to keep things honest and emotionally resonant, an acomplishment many artists seem unable to achieve. We caught Diamond Rings at an interesting time. While he was technically in the middle of touring (and had been for months), at the moment he was on his home turf in Toronto, set to deliver a hometown show later that night. For anyone who leaves home to make a name for himself, the moment of return is always a personal milestone, a time of mixed emotions, and it’s one Diamond Rings described as “surreal,” referring to his time in Canada as “the victory lap.”

in all the creative influences I had growing up, admiring artists like Grace Jones and Kylie Minogue and Devo—people who had really awesome, crazybut-put-together images. It was my way of doing that. And then it kinda took off. Once that started happening, there was some tension, but things are good now, and ultimately I’m doing what I want, and that’s all I can hope or ask for.

Was there a reason you decided not to release music under your own name? Well, besides the fact that my name’s kinda boring and plain, no, not really. I wanted an identity that I could create and that would in some ways enhance who I am. No one wants to go see John, but they’ll go see Diamond Rings. [Laughs]

I would say so. Do you see any possibility of ever going back to creating music as a band? Right now, no, but who knows where I’ll be in two years, three years. If that’s what I feel like I need to do to satisfy myself creatively, then I think that’s one of the great things about being an artist—you get to make your own rules. If it feels right, then I’m going to do it. That’s always the way I’ve operated artistically.

You got your start as a member of The D’Urbervilles, and only later went solo. When you made the decision to go out on your own, did you have to deal with any tension with bandmates, as sometimes happens? Yeah, definitely. Initially Diamond Rings was just a diversion for me—something to do that was completely different from what I’d ever done in a band before, particularly your regular four-piece, punk-rock-style outfit. It was a way for me to indulge

How has the process of making new music been different for you as a solo artist, and now that you’ve had it both ways, do you prefer making music alone? I think definitely there’s a form of creative license you’re afforded when you’re making your own music, which is great. You don’t have to run anything by anybody, and you can follow whatever whim you want and really indulge yourself in that respect. But it does make it a lot harder—not only when it comes time to be creative and make decisions about what you want to keep and what you want to throw away, but also, when the record’s out and you’re on tour and you’re up there singing your songs, there’s really

nothing to hide behind. Sometimes that creates a lot of pressure. But I think it’s something I thrive off of and definitely enjoy. Let’s talk about your latest album, Free Dimensional, which dropped in October. How long in the making was the album? I started making it as soon as the first album, Special Affections, was done, but I went on a bunch of tours and spent a lot of time away. I try to get work done on tour, but it’s not the same as being at home or in the studio. Everything I learned before applies to this one, and that’s hopefully how I’m going to work moving forward. It’s great that now I’ve got two albums done, and I’ve got a ton of new ideas, so I’m excited to keep playing. For someone not yet familiar with your music, would you recommend they start with the new album, or should they first check out Special Affections—or does it even matter? I don’t think it does matter. That’s one of the great things about music— I don’t really have control over how people are going to see what I’m doing or interpret what I’m doing. I’ve had a lot of people who got into me because somebody put one of my songs on a mix tape or a mix CD, or they heard a song on the radio or found a video online. I think whatever their point of entry may be into my world, that’s fine. What I hope is that they take that first experience and hopefully enjoy it and use it to move on and explore other aspects of what I do.

Tell me about the name Diamond Rings. I wanted a name that first and foremost evokes glamour, and I think in addition to that, I wanted something tough and hard, which a diamond also is—it’s one of the hardest rocks out there. I think that dualism goes a long way in describing who I am as an artist, and I think some of the qualities you need to be an artist.

In your mind, how do your two albums differ? Well, the second one is much more confident. It’s technically better produced, I’d say—more hi-fi. I don’t think that necessarily makes it better, but it’s a step up, which is what I think a second album should be—more confident, more brash, a little more outlandish. I take some risks on [this second album] that I didn’t take the first time. The first time, the whole album itself was a risk, in and of itself. I didn’t even know I was making an album while I was writing it—I was just killing time in my room. A lot of artists deal with the “sophomore slump,” but it doesn’t seem like you really had to deal with that, or did you? [Laughs] Well, I have my own battles day to day. I always just sit down and try to write a great riff or write a great hook or write a great vocal melody, and then from there I try to turn that into a great verse or a great chorus, then turn that into a great song. And as soon as that song is done, or if it’s just not happening like I want, I pick up and move on and I try something else. I never try to burden myself with the weight of the expectation that comes with thinking, OK, now I’m making an album. That would be completely and utterly paralyzing, to think that way. That doesn’t mean it’s easy for me to do what I do by any means, but it means I’m hopefully keeping it fun, because if it’s not fun, there’s no point.

enough to even think about what it reminds them of is special.

cate and be what I see is the basic tool for making this communication happen.

How would you yourself describe your sound? Pop. I try to avoid labels whenever I can, whether they’re gender labels or genre labels. For me, creatively, it’s about being open as an artist, but also leaving things open to the listener to interpret how they want. But I’m definitely operating in the realm of pop—pop music, pop culture—meaning that it’s accessible, and it’s accessible because I think that’s what art should be, first and foremost. It isn’t accessible because I want to sell a million records or be on a giant billboard. It’s accessible because I want to communi-

I’m dying to know what you grew up listening to, and maybe what you were listening to during the making of this album. I started listening to my dad’s record collection, which was Fine Young Cannibals, Bruce Springsteen and Joan Armatrading—[Laughs] he had some really random stuff. And making the new album, I was all over the place—TheDream, Kylie, Kraftwerk, old house and techno. I was really trying to be a musical magpie, trying to get my finger in as many places I could. That’s probably the best part about creating.

You mentioned fashion, and aside from your music, you have a pretty distinctive look, especially in your music videos. How would you describe your own fashion sensibility, whether onstage or in your daily life? I would say, first and foremost, that it’s evolving. When I started out, I didn’t have any fashion sensibility other than a desire to be different in whatever 20 dollars could get me at the vintage store—and raiding my mom’s closet for tights and weird shirts. Fashion was a little foreign to me, but at this point I’m becoming a little more aware of what’s out there and seeing how fashion and makeup and this whole industry—which I think kinda gets a bad rap, and for good reason I think, for enforcing, whether intentionally or not, an unobtainable standard on the population. I think there’s a lot of good that can come from breaking down barriers, blurring the lines between genders. I think that’s a really good thing, for sure.

As a solo artist, you’re still a relative newcomer, and I assume that ‘part and parcel’ with that is a constant comparison to other sounds and other artists. Have you had to deal with a lot of that? A little bit. There’s the obvious ones that people bring out, like Grace Jones, and sometimes there are more subtle and nuanced references, sometimes to artists I don’t even know. I think that just proves to me that I still have work to do to become my own comparison. Hopefully that is what’s next for me. But I can understand that if someone’s never heard of me or heard my music, the easiest way to get the message across is to name something else that’s similar. I think most comparisons are really flattering.

As you know, this is our annual “Year in Review” issue. Tell me, how was your 2012 overall? It was great. I started the year in a loft in Montréal working on my album in one of the coldest winters in years, and then playing the Echoplex in L.A. [in early November] to a bunch of people and having a blast. To see those songs through and have them exist in the world has been great. Hopefully I’m gonna take what I’ve learned and what I’ve done and apply that to what I’m working on, and will hopefully make something that’s bigger and better next time out.

So you don’t really take offense when someone compares you to other— maybe older—artists, you just see it as constructive? That’s very mature. I ultimately would like to just be known for who I am, but I recognize that’s not always possible. I think just the fact that people are listening and care

You previously mentioned Grace Jones. Are there any other artists who, musically or visually, you consider your favorites? I’m really inspired a lot by fashion and art, more now than ever before. Designers who have adopted a unisexual styling to their work—really angular and form-based kind of stuff. The sort of aesthetic I see in a lot of conceptual and visual art from the ‘60s. Stuff with clean lines and strong, bold forms I really gravitate towards. People like Grace Jones, groups like Devo. Groups like NWA and Public Enemy. People who have a really defined and clear visual aesthetic. And on a more local level, Peaches and Hidden Cameras—that really brash and almost confrontational queer stance in the way their work is presented. I grew up going to those shows and wanting to incorporate some of that into the work that I do. I could never be so sassy lyrically, though. My stuff is a lot more feelgood. Stuff you could listen to with your mom. [Laughs]

Hey, Mr. DJ Ryan Kenney Puts a Record On BY MICHELLE MCCARTHY

Music has always been a passion for DJ Ryan Kenney. He was an opera major at the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music. But after realizing that wasn’t a feasible career path and walking away from music altogether, Ryan says he felt a void in his life. When he fell into DJing four years ago through a friend who was a promoter, Ryan’s calling finally revealed itself. This newfound passion has given him the opportunity to travel the world, spinning in places like Sweden, Latvia, Germany, London, Mexico and Canada. He’s also performed at high-profile events like Elton John and David Furnish’s housewarming and Joel McHale’s birthday bash. We spoke to the resident DJ on Lance Bass’ Dirty Pop SiriusXM radio show about his spinning style, his stint at Coachella and why there are beams of light coming from the sides of his head.

How would you describe your style of spinning? I’m a very eclectic DJ. A lot of DJs just do pop or just do house. I run across all different styles. I can go anywhere from Nirvana to the Beatles to Stevie Wonder, Britney and Katy Perry. I don't stay with any sort of era or genre of music. I do a little bit of everything. I love throwing in ’90s rock to create a nostalgic feeling on the dance floor. There’s something to be said for that feeling you get when you hear a song and it reminds you of a time in your life. For me, hearing Nirvana brings me back to high school. The nostalgic feelings you get are really unique. When you play a new track, you may like it because you love dancing to it, but there’s no sort of emotional attachment to it yet.

50

FRONTIERSLA.COM

How do you set yourself apart from other DJs? I marketed myself and branded myself more than most people would even think to do. But that has set me apart in a lot of the things I do. I designed my own custom headphones that are glowing ear buds. So when I’m spinning, I have these two laser beams coming out of the side of my head on each side as opposed to headphones. They look great, and people remember that. Where do you get the inspiration for your sets? I just love drawing from the classics. They are the reason a lot of the current artists are knocking off old tracks—because they’re really good. There’s not a lot of original music nowadays unless you’re talking about digital music. But as far as the classic chord pro-

gressions, the basics of music repeated themselves over history. For example, Pitbull will take a song that’s been around for years and put a new little rap over it. But in reality, the classic track is the one people remember and what makes it a popular song. You recently performed at Coachella. How was that? I do a lot of clubs and events, but I also do a lot of work with corporations. I have clients who use me for high-end events. The Coachella thing was through Absolut Vodka. They set up a VIP tent by the main stage, so I spun for all the VIPs the whole weekend. It was really cool. What would be your ultimate event to DJ? Probably Ultra Music Festival in Miami, which is a mainstream dance music festival. It’s huge, huge, huge. But there are so many amazing events that are comparable to that. Tomorrowland—I would say just any major music festival. What are your plans for 2013? The biggest plan is starting to produce my own series of remixes and to try to get a major artist remix—like a Katy Perry or anything that’s radio played. I’m just starting to collaborate with another DJ, and we’re going to start doing some remixes to get more exposure. Hopefully, I’ll have my own stuff within six months. djryankenney.com

EAT YOUR VEGGIES! BY NICK RUFCA Between the ceremonial turkey carved on Thanksgiving and the baked ham served for Christmas dinner, vegetarians can often feel like a forgotten side dish during the holidays. But fret not—we live in a city with an abundance of restaurants that proudly make vegetarian diets the star of the show. Here are a select few worth savoring this season and beyond.

Bulan Thai Vegetarian Kitchen First, it’s hearty, spicy Thai food at its meatless best. I’m a big fan of the specialty crisp “fish” with green apple, cashews, chili and cilantro. Pair this with the corn fritter appetizers and the unique pumpkin rice for a memorable combination. The soy-based veggie pepper “steak” is a nice addition to any entrée, and the sweet coconut ice cream is the perfect way to soothe those tastebuds after such tantalizing heat. Leaf

Mohawk Bend

Veggie Grill

Fonuts

If you’re curious about the raw food movement, Leaf is a great, affordable place to check out. The name of this casual café is quite appropriate—the raw wraps are made up of sizable collard green leaves wrapped tightly around sprouted chick pea hummus, fresh guacamole and sprouts. Mushroom “Rawsagna” (made with squash noodles) and cheesy mushroom alfredo (those are kelp noodles you’re slurping up) use an Italian palette as their inspiration, but are savory dishes in a category all their own. 11938 W. Washington Blvd., Culver City. leaf organics.com

It’s not every day that a restaurant is so vegan-friendly the meat dishes are what need special notation on the menu. Mohawk Bend is at its best when it reinvents traditional meat-centric dishes with a vegetable at center stage instead. Avo & Chips features IPA-beerbattered, fried avocado in lieu of the traditional fish. Buffalo Style Cauliflower with vegan “blue cheese” dressing is a fantastic substitute for the traditional chicken wing. And, the Vegan Bahn Mi pizza is a creative riff on the traditional Vietnamese dish, with marinated tofu filling in quite nicely for the usual pork. 2141 W. Sunset Blvd., Echo Park. mohawk.la

Even vegetarians need a place for a quick, fast-food-like meal, and the Veggie Grill certainly fits the bill. The Buffalo Bomber, a soy-substitute version of a buffalo chicken sandwich, is good enough to fool carnivores. Cauliflower mashed potatoes, vegan mac-n-cheese made with quinoa and nachos topped with bean-based chili and soy sour cream ensure that vegetarians can have their comfort food fix without an ounce of carnivorous guilt. The “All Hail Kale” salad is the perfect choice for purists who don’t need their vegetables to imitate a meat dish. Multiple locations. veggiegrill.com

No matter how strict the diet, everyone needs to satisfy their sweet tooth sometimes. Fonuts, the baked donut shop in Hollywood, has a wide array of scrumptious treats that rarely disappoint. Vegan donut flavors include the mouthwatering vanilla latte and tangy lemon—but for the more adventurous palette, the rich, frosted chocolate hazelnut and coconut passion fruit are two must-tries from their glutenfree offerings. 8104 W. 3rd St., L.A. fonuts.com

TOP THEATER OF 2012 The Color Purple

American Idiot

Follies

The Book of Mormon

Red

In looking back at the Frontiers theater reviews from 2012, I was by Christopher Cappiello struck by how many terrific shows came through Center Theatre Group’s three stages—the Ahmanson, Mark Taper Forum and the intimate Kirk Douglas. A host of Broadway transfers and some homegrown productions gave L.A.’s biggest theatrical player a banner year. But there was wonderful work in many other venues, too— sometimes surprising ones. Here are 10 that stood out.

BEST Shrink-to-Fit

BEST Double Entendres

The Celebration Theatre’s cozy, awkward three-quarters space on Santa Monica was pushed to the limit when master director Michael Matthews reimagined the sprawling musical The Color Purple for a 60-seat house. Not only did it work, but it was one of the most exciting productions of the year, and made the show seem tighter and stronger.

Reviewers rose to the occasion when it came to creating puns inspired by The Irish Curse, Martin Casella’s play about five men who aren’t growers or showers, but who share their private insecurities about penis size in a Brooklyn church basement support group. Les found humor and unexpected heart in the performances of director Andrew Barnicle’s excellent ensemble.

BEST Punk Opera

BEST 100-Year-Old Comedy

I was a huge fan of Green Day’s 2004 American Idiot album, so I wasn’t surprised to see Kevin P. Taft’s glowing review of the national tour of the Broadway stage adaptation when it hit the Ahmanson last winter. Using stateof-the-art video and stage technology, and a crackerjack cast headed by Van Hughes, the show shot across the stage like a cannonball.

A Noise Within’s skilled company brought delightfully surprising life and relevance to George Bernard Shaw’s oft-neglected comedy, The Doctor’s Dilemma, in a glittering production directed by Dámaso Rodriguez. Sadly for us, Artists Repertory Theatre in Portland has snagged the gifted young director, so next year’s Southland highlights won’t bear his name.

BEST Senior Hoofers

BEST New Musical

Director Eric Shaeffer’s Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies was another impressive CTG transfer, with a dazzling set of veteran Broadway babies (Victoria Clarke, Jan Maxwell, Elaine Paige) portraying former showgirls gathered for a reunion in a condemned theatre. With a gorgeous score, the show proved that to live is to hurt, and to somehow keep going.

The Celebration Theatre’s world premiere of Justin Love showed that a musical about a fresh-faced kid who gets a major movie star to come out of the closet can be as gloriously old-fashioned as the best of Comden and Greene. Once again, director Michael Matthews worked miracles, with Alet Taylor turning in one of the most memorable performances of the year as a monster publicist.

BEST Rude Blockbuster

BEST Puppet Show

The Book of Mormon rode into the Pantages with enough awards and hype to sink a ship, but it lived up to every bit of the buzz, with smart, funny songs, South Park snarkiness and a fantastic cast and production design. Kevin said it was “two and a half hours of pure bliss.”

South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company created the gorgeously realized, life-size equine puppets for War Horse, the Tony-winning drama that galloped into the Ahmanson this summer and rode off with the heart of anyone who saw it. There are so many reasons why it should have been saccharine sweet, and it wasn’t. It was astonishing.

BEST Work of Art About Art The Irish Curse

The Doctor’s Dilemma

54

FRONTIERSLA.COM

Alfred Molina provided a towering performance as the brilliant-but-haunted artist Mark Rothko in yet another New York transfer, as John Logan’s biographical twohander, Red, spattered all over the Taper. With Glee’s Jonathan Groff superbly playing the young assistant, the play examined art, commerce and the debilitating price of creativity. Les Spindle thought it was “superbly acted and impeccably staged.” I agree.

Justin Love

War Horse

BEST Metaphysical Classic When CTG hired director Michael Arabian to stage Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot with two of the Irish Nobel winner’s most experienced living collaborators— Barry McGovern and Alan Mandel—it was a stroke of genius. The resulting production was the mesmerizing highlight of the year for me, with Mandel’s octogenarian Gogo still haunting me with the question, “What do we do now, now that we are happy?” Waiting for Godot

THE YEAR OF SPECTACULAR FAREWELLS This is the season to do it. To rid ourselves of the old and begin anew. This is the time of birth or rebirth depending on what you believe. It's been said that religion is for those trying to stay out of hell and spirituality is for those who have been there. I like the hymns and the colored windows enough, but I've always loved spirit. Wherever you fall, it is simply a solid idea to accept now is as good a time as any to get your shit together and change. One of the spectacular things about time is that you cannot waste it in advance. Every year, month, day—hell, even minute is an opportunity to reset. But the lights and music, the presents and even that ball dropping help make this the season to just do it. Liken it to a new picture waiting to be painted. The picture is you. If you look to new, fresh beginnings as the starting line, you can go a million directions. You may be the angel let out of her cage or the drunkard finally living under the spout of a bar at the Abbey. We can jump into action or reaction. Starting from the top doesn't necessarily denote sunshine, lollipops and rainbows. You could birth your way into lying, stealing, berating yourself, max out your cards, put on a couple hundred pounds, fall in love with Tina or start dating hillbilly heroin. Could be a new start, right? I mean, everywhere is walking distance if you have the time. For me, I'm gonna reset to a better man. 2012 has kicked my ass. Not in a bad way. I've just come to terms with the simple fact that I can't stop time. I can't even slow it down. I have spent way too many moments adding up to too many years wallowing in sorrow and anger. I have too often skipped the damn reset and spent a tad too many minutes anesthetizing myself in full formal wear as the sodden guest of honor at my own pity party. I'm neither angry nor sad about this time spent, but for me this season, right now seems like a grand one to kick the can a bit. My maladies are both universal and mine. Lady Death and her bitch Aunt Illness (my primary excuse for wallowing) are still all about, but they always 56

were and always will be. So be it! My friends are now living, not dying as often, and thanks to the smarts of folks I now bet on, care, progress and advocacy on the subject of the plague that decimated an entire gay generation seems properly positioned for the moment. Tomorrow looks pretty damn good. I like my family and they like me. I am contributing to my community as best I know. I am actively looking for ways to make tomorrow better for those I love. The heathen who was the Sundance Kid to my Butch Cassidy, the guy who helped me wreak havoc on too many men in too many pubs 15 years ago literally saved my life this year, and today he and his husband are moments away from becoming awesome dads. That all seems worth waking up for to this fool. I remember this song when I was a kid sung by Joe Cocker and written by a 22-year-old John Sebastian. It was called “Darling Be Home Soon,” and the opening line of the third verse was, "And now, a quarter of my life is almost past. I think I've come to see myself at last.” So screw me that it took me this side of three-quarters to see me. Hell, at least I have! The beginnings, the reset likely won’t be massive. Certainly not monumental. My deal is simply opening doors for folks. Smiling at strangers. Being nice to people in my life I loathe. This is not a metamorphosis. No one has even noticed—except me. I'm going for happy. I’m hoping to fight fear. Fear sucks. So that's what I'm selling this week. A redo. A rebirth. Come on, join me. ‘Tis the season, and what do we have to lose? This week, maybe today, toss a spectacular farewell. I'm pretty sure we only get one chance at this merrygo-round. But if there really is reincarnation, I'd like to come back as Channing Tatum's palms. If you accept that premise that this is a new picture waiting to be painted then lord, toss all the colors and paint you got at it! Those are my principles, and if you don't like them—well, don't fret. I have others. Happy New Year!

Words with Friends My friend Muffy Bolding recently posted something on her Facebook page that I really appreciated. It was a meme that read, “Never give up. And if you give up, F#CK YOU.” I don’t just love this, I live it. I will never understand ‘giving up.’ Listen, I am not talking about someone with a fatal disease. I am not going to judge that person—at least not until I am walking in their hospital slippers. I am talking about everyday life, which, as they say, is not for pussies. The reason I even thought of this is because I play a few different games on my iPhone, such as Words with Friends and my latest obsession, Letter by Letter. As a reader and a writer and a generally intelligent person, I am pretty damn good at these games, if I may say so myself. Don’t get me wrong; I get my ass handed to me on a regular basis by players who are either just plain better/smarter than me or who were simply enjoying better luck during that particular game. So, here’s where my panties get in a bunch. If I make an amazing move (sometimes we’re talking a seven-letter word on a triple-word square with a Q on a triple-letter square that adds up to well over 100 points) do not just quit on me! When people are beating my butt at a game, I do not quit. I hate their ever-lovin’ guts, I curse the day they were born, I do a voodoo ritual in an attempt to reverse their good fortune and/or kill a few hundred of their superior brain cells—but I do not simply quit! I am a fighter. If you are going to beat me at a game, then you are going to beat me by as few points as possible. And if you beat me by a landslide, at least I hung in there and kept swingin’! There is absolutely no shame in losing, but quitting is the ultimate shame. This is not about staying with a man

who beats you or sticking with a horrible job you hate. This is about seeing things through to the end and knowing that if you do not ‘win,’ you are still learning. How do you think people get good at things? By losing! If some perfect physical specimen is on a treadmill next to you, effortlessly running at full speed while on a dizzying incline, but you are walking on the slowest and mosthorizontal setting, you are still getting a workout. And the next time you can speed it up a little. And the next time a little more than that. But you don’t get anywhere (bad treadmill joke, sorry) if you just jump off the machine and go get a large peanut butter smoothie (with protein powder to make it “health food” and not just a milkshake). It’s the same with games. You are not really competing against whomever you are playing. You are competing with yourself—to get better! And to learn how to keep going when you realize there is no way you are going to win. I have had to do that on stage many times, honey. This is my philosophy for life in general, too. Again, I am not dealing with life-threatening circumstances, so I am not here to judge, but I have said this before, and I will say it again: “Life is a job you have to be fired from, you can’t just quit!” So, as 2012 succumbs to brittle bone disease and plops down in an easy chair to die in its sleep, and a wailing, slime-covered 2013 comes slithering out of the universal vagina, let this be my message to you all: May your New Year’s resolution be to NEVER QUIT! Crawl across that finish line, plaster a smile on your face while drunken morons are texting despite the fact that you are singing your balls off, and if someone like me plays the word ‘QUETZAL,’ add a fucking ‘S’ to the end and make the best of the situation!

ENTERTAINMENT

"Most ridiculous night of my life in L.A. so far. At least I made it a year before getting arrested." —Scott Evans updates his Facebook status. The hunky actor (and brother of Chris Evans) was arrested when he allegedly attempted to purchase drugs from an undercover cop. What those drugs were has not been released, but Scott was—on $10,000 bail.

The best gift I've gotten this year is the interview Calvin Klein's ex-boytoy Nick Gruber gave to the New York Post. It is a veritable cornucopia of revelations from an oddly confident minor porn actor. Although he reveals that CK got him a penthouse in the West Village and a 2011 Bentley Supersport worth a quarter of a million dollars, he insists that he never asked for anything and was not a user. The relationship was chock-full of give-and-take. Calvin's chef may have taught Nick the delicacies of cooking French cuisine, but Nick brought the designer to McDonald's for his first Big Mac. Calvin ordered it medium-rare—because McDonald's is known for their Big Mac Tartare! After Gruber was arrested for assault and possession, he went to rehab (which Calvin paid for) and realized that his love for CK was more paternal than romantic. They broke up, and Klein took back his penthouse and Bentley. Nick headed west and started writing his autobiography, Obsession: My Life with Calvin Klein. He's now with another older man with money—which I'm sure is just a coincidence. John Luciano is the nephew of infamous mobster Lucky Luciano and is only 28 years older than

Nick Gruber and John Luciano

Nick. John is helping Nick develop a reality show, which John claims will clear up misconceptions about Gruber. "He's a cross between Kim Kardashian and Honey Boo Boo." Apparently I had a big misconception about Nick. Before this interview, I thought he was a moron. Then I read that John bought him a BMW motorcycle, and Nick made sure that the title was in his name. He's learning. It's been a few weeks since we've mentioned John Travolta. We left the big star in the midst of three lawsuits— 58

FRONTIERSLA.COM

two from escorts/masseurs, and one from a cruise ship employee for improper sexual behavior. Adding fuel to the fire, Travolta's alleged bathhouse trysts were chronicled in a tawdry tell-all called You'll Never Spa in This Town Again. The author, Robert Randolph, filed a lawsuit claiming that comments about him in an e-mail from Travolta's attorney Marty Singer to a website constituted slander. The court ruled against him—proving that free speech works both ways. Randolph has been ordered to pay Travolta $139,645.17 in legal fees. You would think this ruling would deter others from making claims against Travolta. But you'd be wrong. The National Enquirer got Travolta's former pilot (the one he was kissing on the lips in that notorious photo) to admit to being romantically involved with Johnny for several years. This led to Travolta's attorney sending a cease-and-desist letter to Doug Gotterba, the aforementioned pilot. According to Singer, Gotterba was violating a confidentiality agreement he signed when he left Travolta's employ. Gotterba retaliated by suing Travolta, saying that while he did sign a termination agreement, it did not include anything about confidentiality. So he's basically suing for the right to keep talking—something I applaud. I've been wondering what was going on with Barbra Streisand's proposed remake of Gypsy. She hasn't mentioned it much since Arthur Laurents' death, although she did perform two of Mama Rose's songs in her recent tour. Back in March we heard that Downton Abbey scribe Julian Fellowes would be adapting the script. The latest holdup is with the rights, but Universal is confident that's just a formality. Babs still plans to begin filming next year—and she's likely to both star in it and direct it. When asked by Entertainment Weekly if she was too old to play Mama Rose, she said, "What's that got to do with anything? How old do I look to you? Age is a number." Like Babs, I often ask questions without waiting for an answer. One thing you don't have to wait for is Streisand's thoughts on casting. According to Time magazine, she's considering Lady Gaga as Louise, who would follow in the footsteps of Natalie Wood and Cynthia Gibb. Well, there's only so much you

can do with "Little Lamb." I've been a huge fan of comedian Christopher Titus long before his groundbreaking FOX sitcom. The intelligence, care and skill he uses when constructing a show is awe-inspiring— as is his fearlessness as a performer. The DVD box set of his four comedy specials, Get a Real Job, Numbnuts, is one of my favorite things. And right now it's on sale at ChristopherTitus.com, where you can also listen to his hilarious weekly podcast and find out about upcoming live shows. On Jan. 27, he'll be taping his latest special, Epic Fail, at the Fox Theatre in Bakersfield, Calif. See you there. Last summer, I told you about a series of intimate concerts given by Patti LuPone at Provincetown's Art House under the auspices of Seth Rudetsky, who also acted as interviewer and accompanist. He's taken the best bits from all four shows and created a unique concert video that clocks in at just under two hours! I can personally attest to the amazing artistic quality of the performance, because about 90 percent of it is taken from the show I was at. It's probably the best LuPone concert ever captured on film. If you know someone who is a Patti LuPone fan, this is a perfect gift. And at the price of just $10 for lifetime access, it's an offer you can't refuse. Even before going to my website, you should go and buy this at SethTV.com/patti. Let's slip in a quick "Ask Billy" question. Gerard in Dallas writes: "Do you watch Arrow? It's so good. Stephen Amell is beyond hot, and now it looks like John Barrowman is the father of the villain. First question is, am I right? And second, is Barrowman so old that he's now the father of the hot guys?" For almost two decades, forces in Hollywood have tried to create a hit show for Barrowman. First was Central Park West, which lasted a full season. Even when it came back from hiatus as CPW, it didn't work. He then resurfaced on Titans—a Dynasty-style soap featuring the talents of Yasmine Bleeth and Casper Van Dien. NBC smelled a hit. I smelled direct-to-video. When Vicki Principal joined the cast, the smell got more pungent, and it too was canceled. John's real television breakthrough

Casper Van Dien, Yasmine Bleeth and John Barrowman

occurred when he joined the UK cast of Dr. Who, which led to his own series, Torchwood. Along the way, there was talk of a role on Desperate Housewives. After a private meeting with Marc Cherry, he joined the show for five episodes. (Well, Johnny's knees ain't what they used to be.) Will Arrow be the series to keep him stateside for a while? Or will it, too, be plagued with the Barrowman curse? Stay tuned. By the way, get ready for the addition of sexy Colton Hayes to the cast. He'll be playing Roy Harper, who comic aficionados tell me is Speedy, Green Arrow's sidekick. Kinda sounds like Colton's XY pictorial oh so long ago. If he takes off all his clothes like he does in the making of that porn video on BillyMasters.com, I'll be mighty happy. When I'm starting and ending with some (minor) celebrity skin, it's definitely time to end yet another column. But that gives me an idea I'd like to run by Barbra. You know when the three old strippers show Gypsy how it's done in "Gotta Get a Gimmick"? What if the trio was played by former notable Broadway Mama Roses? I'm thinking Patti LuPone as Mazeppa, Bernadette Peters as Electra, and Tyne Daley as Tessie Tura. If one of them balks, I'm sure Angela would be game. Jason, pass this along to your mom (he hangs on my every word). In the meantime, check out BillyMasters.com, the site that never comes up short. A subscription is only a few clicks away. And if you have a question, you can always send it along to Billy@BillyMasters.com and I promise to get back to you before LuPone bumps it with a trumpet (which should be a breeze after what she did with that tuba in Sweeney Todd). So, until next time, remember, one man's filth is another man's Bible.

TRAGEDY SLEEPS IN A FORD TAURUS Gossip Gay is addicted to Facebook—what, with our 4,991 friends, 7,217,123,971,237 pictures and 69-ish likes for every ever-witty status update we post, how can we not? It's like the cyber version of the popularity that we never had in our homophobic Midwest high school! But what we love most of all on Facebook is the late-night drunken posts of our tragic best friends—not real best friends mind you, but the strangers we simply friended because their profile picture was of them shirtless at some gay underwear shoot while licking a lollipop and looking confused. Last Thursday did not disappoint, when a drunk friend of an even drunker friend status updated: "Why is it that every time someone says they love me they end up kicking me out? This always happens to me ... with my friends, my exes and even my family. I spent last night sleeping in my car. I always spend weekends sleeping in my car. Why?" Why? Why, why, why? Well, Tragic Taurus-Sleeper, let us remind you of the night we met—the night a drunk friend of an even drunker friend brought you to a party we were throwing at our WeHo condo. (Yes, folks, back before Gossip Gay was famous and the proud owner of a beautiful Hollywood Hills-adjacent-ish home, we were forced to live in a 1,200-square-foot WeHo condo. Oh, the horrors, the horrors! However, we digress.) Remember, Taurus Sleeper? You came to our condo, slammed two bottles of two-buck chuck (which you brought) within 30 minutes and then stumbled into our bathroom to pet our cats. When we asked you to leave because we thought it was creepy, you went up to our rooftop and started throwing rocks at peoples' windows. You even broke one of them and the police were called. You would have been arrested if it wasn't for us writing a $380 check on the spot to one of our ugly, bitchy, yappy, crying "Wah! Wah! Wah! He broke my window!" neighbors. Remember all this? Remember when you—to "pay us back”—bought us a Diet Coke once at the Abbey and gave us a hug, which made us wet heave up our Diet Coke in anger? We asked you to never speak to us again, you said "Why?" and we told you to "<bleep> your pathetic and tragic <bleep> of a <bleep>!" and you simply stared at us with confused, dumb eyes. Remember all this? We don't even love you and yet we threw you out of our house. You're lucky you have at least a ratty, broke-down car in which to sleep—and you're lucky we have no idea in which trailer park it's parked, because if we did, we'd surely throw rocks at your window and cause some damage. You're gross, and we hate you! Facebook status update: #revengetothetuneof$380! Contact us at queersay@hotmail.com if you've got WeHo dish! Happy holidays!

THE CITY OBSERVES THE HOLIDAYS BY LIFTING PARKING RESTRICTIONS

THE CITY KICKS OFF ANNUAL ‘DON’T DRINK & DRIVE’ CAMPAIGN BY PAULO MURILLO For those who like to drink and be merry during the holiday season, the city of West Hollywood has launched the annual “Don’t Drink & Drive” campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving. City officials held a press conference on the corner of Santa Monica and San Vicente Boulevards on Dec. 10, with support of the West Hollywood Sheriff’s station, local fire stations 7 and 8, the Sunset Strip Business Association Ambassadors and local licensed taxi companies,. The city also unveiled a crashed vehicle that is on display in front of the West Hollywood Sheriff’s station to remind everyone about the wreckage if you drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. More than 200,000 napkins will be distributed to a number of local restaurants and bars in West Hollywood. The napkins have printed messages on them to

remind patrons not to drink and drive and to use a designated driver or a local cab company. The napkins will also have phone numbers to West Hollywood cab companies printed on them. The Don’t Drink & Drive campaign also includes a free holiday shuttle, which will run along both Sunset and Santa Monica Boulevards during the New Year’s Eve celebration from Dec. 29 through Dec. 31, between the hours of 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. “While you’re out having a good time, think ahead, plan, and if your plans go awry, make sure you come up with other alternatives," West Hollywood Mayor Jeffrey Prang said at the press conference. “We want the bars looking out for you. We want friends and family looking out for one another, and the city’s looking out for you too,” he added. For more information, call the city’s public safety division at (323) 848-6414.

DO YOU THINK THE WRECKED CAR ON DISPLAY IN WEHO WILL INFLUENCE PEOPLE'S CHOICES AROUND DRINKING AND DRIVING? "I think it makes a difference. It's a good visual aid. When people are driving in the neighborhood looking for parking, people will see that car and think twice. Then again, people can also get in a wreck from looking at this wreck while they drive." —Edward Slavin

60

FRONTIERSLA.COM

"I don't care if you drink and drive as long as there's no alcohol involved. I'm not sure how effective this crashed car is. It is a good statement against drinking and driving, but it looks more like an art piece to me. Art has the power to influence, but because it looks like an art piece, it becomes less horrifying." —Corey Powell

In observance of Christmas Day, Tuesday, Dec. 25, parking regulations will not be enforced within the West Hollywood city limits. Parking meters and associated time limits will be lifted for the day and restricted parking permit sections will not be enforced, including peakhour towing restrictions and street sweeping. All other parking regulations will be enforced on Dec. 25 and normal enforcement of all parking regulations will resume on Wednesday, Dec. 26. In observance of New Year’s Day, Tuesday, Jan. 1, parking regulations will also not be enforced for parking meters and associated time limits, peak-hour towing restrictions and street sweeping. However, permit parking and other parking regulations will be enforced Jan. 1. Visitor permits will be available at the Kings Road Parking Structure and at the West Hollywood Sheriff’s station. Normal enforcement regulations resume on Wednesday, Jan. 2. West Hollywood City Hall will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. There will also be no trash or recycling collection for both holidays. Regularly scheduled Tuesday collections will be picked up the following day. For more information on parking restrictions or city holiday hours, visit weho.org or call (323) 848-6404. Have a safe and happy holiday!

SPEAK OUT "I was in a car wreck, so seeing it has a personal impact on me, but people who are detached from that experience may not be as affected. That shattered metal represents lives that have been changed forever. Show pictures of what happened to the people inside that car and people will think twice about drinking and driving." —Paul Anthony

LONG BEACH

OPERATION SANTA PAWS SHARES SOME PUPPY LOVE BY GREG HERNANDEZ Long Beach community activist Justin Rudd and others spent the weekend of Dec. 22 delivering toys and treats to animal shelters in Long Beach, Seal Beach and Orange as part of the annual Operation Santa Paws event. "It's a bittersweet thing when we deliver," says Rudd. "The law is five or six days minimum that a shelter has to retain before a dog or a cat is put down. We could come back a week later and they could be gone. You're making their day. They allow us to go in and give them treats on this day once a year. Almost every year, inevitably [a Santa Paws volunteer] will go back days later to pick up a pet they met that day. "The idea is we take some cheer to shelter dogs and cats," Rudd adds. "The ultimate goal is to get dogs and cats adopted out into forever homes. One way to do that is to present people with happy dogs and cats, and something that makes dogs happy is toys and treats." An avid photographer, Rudd helps increase the odds by taking photos of animals he sees and posting them on the Operation Santa Paws Facebook page. Rudd grew up in Alabama, where he was familiar with Operation Santa Claus, which provides toys for children in need. He decided to take the idea and apply it to animals in need, and Operation Santa Paws was born. Since begin-

ning 11 years ago, the idea has spread throughout California and to 30 other states in the U.S. "We encourage people to collect and donate to their favorite shelters on their own," Rudd says. "They can use our poster and list of things needed. We empower people to go and collect." Rudd is a gay man who has launched several long-running community activities in the city, including the monthly 30-Minute Beach Cleanup. He launched Operation Santa Paws in 2001, and it is part of his Haute Dog organization (pronounced HOT), a network of dog owners, lovers, educators, rescuers and supporters. Each year, donations have flooded in. Among the items collected are durable toys for puppies, dogs, kittens and cats, dog and cat shampoo, dry puppy food, dry and canned kitten food, food and water bowls and such treats as PupPeroni and soft Milk Bones. "It is as responsive as ever," he says of donations from the public. "In Long Beach there are 20 places that are collecting. We depend on it. They all show up the Saturday morning before Christmas and drop off their collected items. We have SUVs full of toys and treats. It adds up to thousands of dollars in donations at each location." hautedogs.org/santapaws.html

RING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH PALM SPRINGS FOLLIES BY JAMES F. MILLS

Some call it cheesy. Others call it great fun. But there’s no disputing that the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies is a Broadway-caliber production filled with sequins, feathers, buff bodies and sumptuous legs that is guaranteed to leave a smile on your face. “It’s a glitzy Las Vegas-style production right here in Palm Springs,” reports Follies Communication Manager Greg Purdy. “The thing that really makes us unique is that our singers and dancers aren’t in their 20s, but rather in their 60s and 70s. We don’t hire anyone younger than 55. We’ve got a policy that our performers have to have

lived through the era in which they are performing.” Seen by over 4 million people since it opened 22 years ago, the Follies plays in the 809-seat Plaza Theatre in Downtown Palm Springs. This year’s show is Dance to the Music, made up of songs from the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s. “Our core audience grew up on the Beatles, Mick Jagger, Dick Clark and ‘50s TV,” says Purdy. “So we give them a show filled with songs of their youth.” Headlining the Follies through the end of 2012 is Lorna Luft, the daughter of Judy Garland and halfsister of Liza Minnelli. of Rancho Mirage, Luft, who normally is booked for holiday shows in places like New York or London, jumped at the chance to stay home for Christmas. “Lorna says she doesn’t really sound like her mother but knows that everybody thinks she does,” Purdy reports. “She did a CD a few years ago called Songs My Mother Taught Me that Barry Manilow produced. She’ll be doing some songs from that, plus she belts out an incredible rendition of ‘The Man That Got Away’ that her mother did in A Star is Born.” The New Year’s Eve shows (at special times of 3:30 and 9 p.m., rather than their standard 1:30 and 7 p.m.) will be especially fun. In addition to the lobby being decorated to the hilt with a psychedelic 1960s holiday motif, there’ll be a photographer on the red carpet, champagne, confetti and goodie bags filled with Follies souvenirs. “The New Year’s Eve shows always have a fun electricity about

them, helped in part because everyone’s had champagne beforehand,” Purdy says. “Then at the end of the show, we do the countdown on stage, fire up the confetti cannons and blast the audience with strains of “Auld Lange Syne.” It’s like Times Square but just in Palm Springs.” The Follies is dark the first week of January, then reopens on Jan. 8 with Lou Christie, best known for the 1966 number one hit “Lightnin’ Strikes,” as the headliner for two months. Starting March 12, Leslie Gore of “It’s My Party” fame headlines until the Follies closes for the season in mid-May. “If you haven’t been to the Follies in a few years, it’s time to come back,” says Purdy. “People keep telling us they’re amazed how much it’s changed, how many new technologies we’ve integrated into the show. It’s as unique now as it was 22 years ago.” psfollies.com

‘TASSELS AND TORCH’ CELEBRATES 2013 WITH A BLAST FROM THE PAST BY JAMES F. MILLS New Year’s Eve is about moving into the future. But here’s a chance to step into the past before welcoming 2013. Tassels and Torch is a one-night-only, big-band-style comedy, variety and burlesque show that will help ring in the New Year with the sophisticated glamour of the 1940s and ‘50s, an era that put the “show” in showgirls. “I grew up inspired by showgirls like the Ziegfeld Follies, Mae West and Rita Hayworth, plus vaudeville and of course gorgeous men,” explains show creator/producer/star Natasha Estrada. “I wanted to create a show that encompassed all of these elements, where spectators would have a night they'd never forget and be entertained from start to finish.” The show features a number of acts, including Jack Dagger, the renowned knife-throwing comedian known as the King of Fling, and Heath "The Chief" Cofran as the Master of Ceremonies. The burlesque performers will be the most titillating aspect of Tassels and Torch. In a modern update, the show will not only feature burlesque girls, but also burlesque boys. “Boy-lesque, like burlesque, is about the art of the tease,” says Estrada, an L.A. native who got her start doing burlesque nine years ago. “While the destination is delightful, often it's about the journey getting there. I have seen crowds whipped into a frenzy over the removal of just a glove.” 66

FRONTIERSLA.COM

Another modern twist will be the inclusion of a drag queen—Delta Work, best known for RuPaul’s Drag Race. “I am immensely inspired by drag queens and felt it was important to include drag in the show,” says Estrada. “I was elated when Delta Work came on board. I met her last year when I was performing with Dita Von Teese, and we've talked about working together ever since.” Adding to the sophistication is the location—Palm Springs’ most glamorous hotel, the Riviera Resort and Spa, a place where the Rat Pack were known to both perform and frolic, along with the likes of Elvis, Raquel Welch, Jayne Mansfield and Desi Arnez. “The grand ballroom at the Riviera is the perfect venue for a decadent revue like Tassels and Torch,” Estrada says. “Guests will be treated like they are stars there. I was so excited when we got the Riviera.” The live big band will perform for guests dancing and classic cars will be on display to add to the ambiance. Additionally, a Pin-Up Girl Clothing pop-up boutique will be in the lobby selling vintage-inspired clothing and accessories. “I want people to feel inspired and entertained,” Estrada says. “I want to create a memorable evening for them that leaves them excited for the next one!” tasselsandtorch.com

Wandering in the Bizzy B boutique at 6548 Hollywood Blvd. (at Schrader), you first think it’s just a women’s lingerie store. But as you go further into the shop, you discover there are various costumes, swimwear, dancewear and exotic items like sequin-covered bras, leather corsets and rhinestoneencrusted pumps. Wandering even further, you see men’s underwear and thongs, plus-size items, fetish items, sex toys and more. Bizzy B is definitely not what it initially seems to be, and that’s exactly how they want it to be. “Everybody’s really confused when they come in,” says Bizzy B owner Shawn Prochazka. “Is it a sex store? Is it lingerie? Is it men’s? That’s what we really wanted. I don’t want people coming in here and knowing exactly what it is. It’s like they’re kind of finding something.” With this wide array of items, Bizzy B has developed a loyal following since it opened 12 years ago, primarily selling sexy lingerie made by the top names in the business. But gradually, they started custom-making their own items. “We started carrying other people’s products, but after a couple of years realized that to compete with the same products that everyone else carried, we can display it nice, we can make a nice store, but ultimately, its not something that’s different,” says Prochazka, an L.A. native. “My wife Bea [for whom the store

is named], always had a niche for fashion and design, so we said one day, ‘Why don’t we make our own stuff?’” With that decision, their Bseductive line was started. Five years ago, when whey expanded into the adjacent store and started carrying men’s items, their Bseduced line got underway. Today, their own lines constitute about 70 percent of the products Bizzy B carries; products that are only available in the store and on their website. “If you want something funky, different or off-the-wall, unusual colors, we’ve got it,” says Prochazka, who was a Chippendale’s dancer for five years in the late 1990s. “We’re not trying to do wholesale. That’s not our goal. We’re really here for the customer. This is the only place you can get this.” Hollywood has definitely taken notice. Bizzy B custom-makes items for many TV shows, movies and music videos. They even created the outfits for singer Nicki Minaj’s latest tour, including her iconic rhinestone boot. “You never know what to expect in this store,” says Prochazka. “One minute, I’ll be helping a transgender woman with breast forms, then a guy will come in looking for ass-less underwear and a minute later Paris Hilton comes in wanting us to create something.” Visit Bseductive.com to see the women’s line and Bseduced.com for the men’s.
