IN MEMORY OF BOB CRAIG, FOUNDING PUBLISHER

©2013 Thanks to the dawn of the information age, we believe distribution/circulation not only encompasses hard copies printed and the pass-on rate of those hard copies, but web browsing and electronic copies being downloaded by our growing online readership. This has become a substantial boost to the number of readers of our magazine. Currently, an average of 30,000 hard copies are printed biweekly. Studies have shown each hard copy has a probable “pass-on rate” of two to three, meaning each hard copy taken will be seen by two to three additional readers. With the pass-on rate alone, estimated readership can conservatively average 55,000 to 90,000, not encompassing visitors who visit us online at FrontiersLA.com.

Remembrance of Mark Hundahl by his longtime friend and business partner David Stern: We’ve visioned and dreamed We’ve planned and we’ve schemed How do I sum up my long relationship with my business partner and dear friend Mark Hundahl? Those who knew us well and experienced how we worked together called us "the odd couple." I’m the eternal optimist, always seeing the glass half-full. Mark, on the other hand, was more like, “Where’s the glass? There’s water everywhere.” He always saw that you could either ride its wave or possibly drown in it. We always had each others' backs, and we never let each other drown. The synergy between us created an amazing energy and bond. He was one of the most gay-friendly straight men I’ve ever known, and the lesson learned from and with him along the way will be carried forward as a part of me as I continue my journey. Mark was also a very private man and played things close to the vest. I have always been an open book, wearing my heart on my sleeve. At the end, Mark's body was frail and failing him, but when he was awake, his mind was still there, sharp as ever. I was lucky enough to have a great visit with him about a week prior to his passing. In that conversation, he compared us to two puppy dogs, bouncing down the street, always running into things, but still getting to that small bowl of food at the end. He had his humorous analogy right to the end. The last thing Mark and I were working on was the creation of the Frontiers Awareness & Education Foundation. It’s a vision Mark and I talked about for years as our way of paying it forward to the community. We wanted to create training and mentoring programs ensuring there is a next generation of LGBT journalists reporting on the stories of the community. I am so glad that Mark got to see this vision come to life in his final days. He was so proud of me for following through with it. I feel that joy from him in every fiber of my being. Mark's program idea was called "Diamonds in the Rough." He wanted to make sure that we reached out to underprivileged or struggling LGBT youth and mentored and trained them for the media of tomorrow. This will be the first program created and carried out by the foundation, in honor of Mark Hundahl—my friend, partner and family. If ever there was a diamond in the rough, it was Mark. I will miss him dearly, but as he said in our last conversation, we will be working together always. Always. Love, David Stern

BUILDING COMMUNITY

Leading by Example

Born This Way: DJ Paul V. By Michelle McCarthy Dragstrip 66 DJ and author Paul Vitagliano first envisioned the concept of Born This Way as a book featuring out celebrities like Elton John, Ellen DeGeneres and Neil Patrick Harris that would inspire gay kids and show them that gay people they admire had similar experiences. Then, in the fall of 2010, the stories of numerous gay youth committing suicide emerged, and Paul decided to take his concept online. The photo/essay project Born ThisWayBlog.com was launched in January 2011. It is a place where gay adults of all genders are welcome to submit childhood pictures and stories (roughly ages 2 to 12) reflecting the memories and early beginnings of their innate LGBTQ selves. Paul’s message of acceptance has evolved from the blog to a book, Born This Way: Real Stories of Growing Up Gay, which is now available at bookstores, Urban Outfitters and Amazon.com. What are you hoping to accomplish with the blog? Simply put, that nature determines our sexual orientation, there’s no “choice” and that it’s hardwired inside everyone at a very early age. But also, that it’s the nurture that shapes our self-image and self-esteem as kids. On a larger level, I want to help pay it forward to the next generation and give LGBTQ kids today encouragement and connection within the stories. Is there a common thread in the stories you’ve heard? There are so many great stories and different yet similar experiences, and the

20

FRONTIERSLA.COM

best common thread is seeing that selfpride as an adult can help to erase the confusion, bullying or shame we oftentimes go through as children. What do you hope straight people will take away from it? I hope all people—especially our straight allies—will have a better understanding of our experiences and will spread the message of full LGBTQ equality as far and wide as possible. That’s happening on a much broader level now, which is amazing to see. What kind of feedback have you received from the project? The feedback has been 95 percent positive and incredibly supportive—from younger and older gay people alike, and from many parents. I know these stories are helping them navigate their own situations at home with a better understanding of what our experiences were like as gay kids. Does Lady Gaga know about your blog? I definitely know she’s aware of the blog, and I assume she knows about the book by now, too. I’ve always made it known that her message (and those three words in the title) is a source of inspiration and solidarity for this project. How did the blog turn into a book? The blog exploded almost immediately, and literary agents contacted me to say it would make for a wonderful book to pitch to publishers—which is pretty incredible to see come true, as my idea has now come full circle. And I hope to do a Vol. 2, 3 and more. How old were you when you realized you were gay?

Like many other children of the ’70s, I didn’t know what being “gay” meant. But I had a strong cognizance of male attractions and crushes by around age 6. What was your coming out process like? I came out gradually, first to myself at 17, my close friends and my two sisters at 19, then my mom at 30. The big joke, of course, is that she’d known forever. But I’d moved from Boston to Los Angeles at 26 and just never made a point to tell her before that! I’m fortunate that being gay has never been a negative in my life. After 20 years, Dragstrip 66 is L.A.’s longest-running underground dance event. What was your motivation behind starting it up? Co-creating Dragstrip 66 with Mr. Dan is probably my proudest achievement in life. In the beginning, we just wanted to host a fun, diverse club that we’d like to attend ourselves, and where I could play very eclectic and alternative music for a gay dance floor. But as we approach our 20th anniversary, we’re now fully realizing the palpable impact it’s had on our patrons’ lives, our own lives, and how it helped shape the all-inclusive vibe that’s now synonymous with Silver Lake. It will be very tough to say goodbye to it on Jan. 12, but we’re making a documentary to preserve its crazy, wonderful legacy, which is very exciting!

NEWS By Peter DelVecchio and Karen Ocamb

Gay Weddings Start in Three States As 2012 ended and 2013 dawned, a wave of same-sex weddings swept three states—Maine, Maryland and Washington—where voters legalized gay marriage in the November election, the first time marriage equality has ever triumphed at the ballot box. Fifteen gay and lesbian couples had acquired marriage licenses by 2 a.m. Dec. 29 in Portland, two hours after the Maine law took effect, the Bangor Daily News reports. Portland’s Democratic Mayor Michael Brennan arrived at City Hall at 10, saying, "People have been discriminated against for years, so we wanted to make sure that we'd be able to accommodate people as soon as possible.” In Maryland, Baltimore’s Democratic Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake officiated just after midnight on Jan. 1 at the wedding of James Scales, 68, and William Tasker, 60, USA Today reported. "There is no human institution more sacred than that of the one that you are about to form," RawlingsBlake said during the ceremony. "True marriage, true marriage, is the dearest of all earthly relationships." Weddings began in Washington on Dec. 6. “For many years now, we've said, ‘One more step. One more step,’” Washington’s Democratic Governor Chris Gregoire said, certifying the marriage equality measure. “This is the last step.” Among the first to marry in Washington were Pete-e Petersen, 85, and her partner of 35 years, Jane Abbott Lightly, 77, who always assumed they would die before marriage equality became the law. But the battle is far from over. A majority of states still bar gay marriage, and cases now pending before the U.S. Supreme Court could greatly affect the marriage equality landscape. In the meantime, the state-bystate march goes on. A marriage equality bill was to be introduced in the Rhode Island legislature Jan. 3, the Providence Journal reported. Rhode Island is the only New England state without marriage equality.

Gays in ‘Different Reality,’ Vatican Says Responding to a French Catholic magazine's support for marriage equality, a Dec. 17 editorial in Osservatore Romano, the Vatican's official newspaper, said that gay couples inhabit "a different reality" because of their inability to conceive children, thinkprogress.org reports. The editorial says that equating

straight and gay marriage is "a denial of the truth that affects one of the basic structures of human society, the family.” The editorial then appears to liken gay marriage to socialism or communism, saying, "We cannot base a society on these foundations without then paying a very high price, as happened in the past when there was an

attempt to achieve total economic and social equality. Why repeat the same mistake and chase after an unattainable utopia?" The editorial comes hard on the heels of Pope Benedict's assertion in his recent World Peace Day 2013 address that same-sex marriage threatens "serious harm to justice and peace.”

Obama Urges Illinois to Adopt Gay Marriage President Barack Obama is urging Illinois legislators to pass a bill scheduled for consideration early January that would legalize samesex marriage in that state, the Huffington Post reported Dec. 30. The president "would support this measure that would treat all Illinois couples equally" were he still in the state legislature, said White House spokesman Shin Inouye in an interview with the Chicago Sun Times. Obama came out for gay marriage during the 2012 presidential campaign after years of saying his position on marriage equality was "evolving." The bill has sufficient support to pass the state Senate, but prospects in the House are dicier, a spokesperson for Sen. Heather Stearns, D-Chicago, said. Gay advocates plan to release a letter "signed by top Illinois executives in companies endorsing samesex marriage as an economic imperative," a Dec. 30 Illinois Unites for Marriage release states.

SPEAK OUT “Psychologists tell us that sometimes the things we strike out against, we do so because a bit of it lies within us on a subliminal level.” —Former Bahamas Christian Council President Bishop Simeon Hall, formerly strongly anti-gay, urging churches to adopt a more tolerant attitude toward homosexuality in an interview with the Bahamas’ Tribune 242.

“He voted consistently against fairness for LGBT people, and there does not seem to be any evidence prior to his effort to become Secretary of Defense of any apology or retraction of his attack on [openly gay former ambassador to Luxembourg] James Hormel.”

“My Dad and I struggled for the past 15 months trying to help Brian fight his battle with alcohol and depression.”

—Retiring openly gay U.S. Rep. Barney Frank regarding former Republican Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, widely seen as President Barack Obama’s likely choice for Secretary of Defense.

Bank of America Settles HUD Complaint Filed for Lesbian Couple

Log Cabin Republicans Head Quits The head of the National Log Cabin Republicans, an LGBT GOP group, stepped down on Dec. 31, the Washington Blade reports. R. Clarke Cooper will be replaced on an interim basis by Gregory Angelo, chairman of Log Cabin Republicans of New York, according to a statement by LCR’s board. Cooper, an Army reserve officer and Iraq War vet, says his departure has nothing to do with the November election, and that he told the group's board he planned to quit at an Oct. 20 meeting. LCR was widely criticized in the LGBT community for its “qualified endorsement” of Mitt Romney for president despite his newfound harshly anti-gay positions. LCR participated in drafting the GOP platform, but was unable to block planks hostile to LGBT rights. "Back then [in October], I said, verbatim, ‘Win, lose or draw, I want to leave at the end of the year,’” Cooper said. "A lot of that was just predicated on I promised to work two cycles. So, going back to when I came on in 2010, I said, ‘You get me for the mid-term, and you get me for the general.’” Cooper took the helm at LCR during the legislative wrangling over the repeal of “Don't Ask, Don't Tell,” and

R. Clarke Cooper

an LCR federal lawsuit challenging that policy succeeded in obtaining a brief stay of the gay ban’s enforcement during his tenure. Cooper has not revealed his post-LCR plans, but said he intends to remain active in the Republican party. Angelo says he is “humbled and thrilled” to become LCR’s interim executive director. “It has never been more critical to advocate for equality to Republicans, as Republicans,” he said. “I will do everything I can to work for Republican victories that return the party to its roots of freedom, fairness and liberty for all.”

Quick Pic

On Jan. 2, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced they had reached an agreement with Bank of America to settle a claim filed on behalf of a lesbian couple in Florida that had been refused financing for a home mortgage. HUD says it’s the “first enforcement action taken against a lender involving HUD’s recent rule (Equal Access to Housing in HUD Programs Regardless of Sexual Orientation or Gender Identity) ensuring the department’s core housing programs be open to all eligible persons, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or marital status.” “This agreement demonstrates that HUD will vigorously enforce its equal access rule and pursue lenders that discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or marital status,” said Helen Kanovsky, HUD’s general counsel. “By the same token, Bank of America should be commended for stepping up and taking immediate corrective action after HUD notified BOA of the violation.”

For the second year, AIDS Healthcare Foundation won the Tournament of Roses Parade’s Queen’s Award for the “Most Effective Use and Display of Roses in Concept, Design & Presentation” for its float “The Global Face of AIDS,” produced by Dana Miller. The float featured over 300 different types of flowers flown in from around the world, framed by a giant red ribbon made up of over 150,000 handpicked red roses, each in its own water vial.

RIP, My Friend, Mark Hundahl By Karen Ocamb Frontiers co-owner Mark Hundahl died of cancer early Dec. 27. He was 61. Even though we knew his death was coming, it still hurt. Mark liked diversity—not just in people but in writing styles. Our mutual friend Sam Smith arranged our first meeting—ironically, just days after I had decided to go back into mainstream journalism in 2002. Mark wanted to recruit me as a freelance reporter for IN Los Angeles magazine, telling me how much he liked my writing. I was flattered, of course, but what really impressed me was how he could tell the difference between a layered ‘conversational’ piece I’d written and something with my byline that had been flattened into an oldfashioned AP style. It was the equivalent of “you had me at hello.” The first big project I pitched to Mark was a five-page tribute marking the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. We used an original work by artist Alex Koleszar (partner of the late Dr. Scott Hitt) for the cover and lots of brief notes about key people and moments in a photo essay, including an eyewitness description from openly gay CNN producer Rose Arce of the nuclear winter-like paper and debris fallout after the towers fell. We knew that a photo of people jumping from one of the Twin Towers would be painfully provocative—but we were also committed to showing the unvarnished horror of that day. It was that kind of support and grasp of my journalistic vision that prompted me to stay in gay journalism and try to improve my advocacy for the LGBT movement. Mark seemed to understand my ‘calling’ before I did. Mark always had my back. That was one thing I cherished about him—he was not afraid of confrontation when I warned him and David about a controversial story I needed to write.

28

FRONTIERSLA.COM

Indeed, Mark welcomed a clash of ideas to better give the reader a range of possibilities from which to draw their own conclusions. Not that Mark and I agreed on everything. Far from it. He would sometimes declare that so-and-so was a “thug” or come up with curious conspiracy theories that just baffled me. I attributed it to his fondness for science fiction and a world where trust was hard-fought and earned, not granted after an easy, accommodating smile. Mark’s middle name should have been “scrutiny.” But if science fiction is a metaphor for reality and a door to the perception of what is possible, in some ways Mark lived what he imagined. For instance, he was utterly devoid of homophobia. When we first met, I knew he had owned the Probe—a popular gay disco in the 1980s—so I assumed he was gay. It wasn’t until quite a bit later—when he started talking about his then-girlfriend and later wife Dr. Bethany Marshall—that I realized he was straight! He was a straight man living and working in a gay world where the content of one’s character— and a good story—mattered more than anything else. But Mark was not devoid of compassion. Having experienced the dark days of AIDS mixed with crystal methamphetamine and GHB and calling ambulances for people who collapsed from overdoses behind the Probe, Mark was immediately onboard when I suggested that IN LA magazine run a regular XMeth column to help combat the high-risk crystal meth crisis. That column continues today in Frontiers magazine, running every other issue, strongly backed by co-owner and publisher David Stern, who’s been running the magazine for the past four years. Mark was a very private man, and the extent

of his illness was not really known outside his family and Frontiers. Mark was a fighter—he’d beaten cancer before—and thanks to a new miracle drug, he had already bounced back this time when the odds didn’t look so good. He believed in the power of prayer, and was buoyed and felt comforted by the news that so many people were praying for him and wishing him well. I hope in the end he considered his transition into death to be an exciting adventure into a new fantastic world from which he will occasionally send postcards. A public memorial will be held later in January. Meanwhile, in lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the new Frontiers Awareness & Education Foundation online at frontiers foundation.org, or tax-deductible checks can be made payable to Frontiers Awareness & Education Foundation and sent to 5657 Wilshire Blvd. #470, Los Angeles, CA 90036. I’ve written a longer obit at LGBT POV (tinyurl.com/d6kmhps), and Mark and Frontiers are featured in a new book edited by Tracy Baim, Gay Press, Gay Power: The Growth of LGBT Community Newspapers in America.

Trans Beauty Kylan Wenzel Competes in Miss California Pageant By Karen Ocamb Last April, following international fallout when pageant officials disqualified 23-year-old Miss Canada Jenna Talackova after learning she was a transgender woman, Donald Trump and his Miss Universe Organization announced a significant rule change to allow trans women to compete for any of their pageant titles. Because of that rule change, 26-year-old Kylan Arianna Wenzel of Century City left her job as a shift manager at Jamba Juice, moved her sex reassignment surgery up six months and decided to pursue her life-long dream of confidently entering the Miss California beauty pageant. “The first time I watched a beauty pageant was when I was 11, in 1997, when Miss USA won Miss Universe. And ever since then, it’s kind of been implanted in my brain,” Wenzel told Frontiers during a Jan. 3 phone interview. “I wasn’t sure how it would happen for me, but it was something I put out there. “You have to put it out to the universe—what you want to do—and you have to follow up on it,” Wenzel continued. “So, let’s say for transgender individuals, even if you haven’t had your sex change and you’re not sure, you have to act like you are Miss Universe or you are the woman you see yourself being. And you do that in everyday life. So I just worked really hard. I saved for surgery. I started getting procedures early like laser hair removal—things like that. It really is about believing in yourself. But you also need people to believe in you, because you can’t really get that far, sometimes, when you don’t have that kind of support.” Wenzel came to the conclusion that “nothing is impossible,” despite an extremely difficult childhood. Half-Korean and half-German, she was considered developmentally slow. “I always knew I was female, but it was really hard to register those feelings because of my development growing up,” Wenzel said. “And I also come from a very abusive background. But no matter how much I got beaten or what I was going through, there was kind of a fire in me that just

said, I will! and I can, no matter what they say!” Wenzel survived by doing research. She studied what happened to people from abusive backgrounds and decided not to do drugs, drink or smoke. She also consumed self-help books and Oprah to discover her purpose in life. “But the one thing I’ve always wanted most of all is wisdom,” she said, “discovering that you don’t actually have to experience something to learn about it.” “My parents were physically abusive growing up, and I was also sexually abused,” she said. “But part of it now is really understanding and knowing your parents as human beings and why they were the way they were. So as an adult now, I don’t have any anger or resentment towards them, because I understand that they had a very tough life and that’s the only way they knew how to deal with it. I just find a way to communicate with people and connect with them. I think of their background and ask, why do they react that way? And that’s how I go through my everyday life with every person that I meet.” Wenzel is also philosophical about beauty. “We all know that beauty is just skin deep. Beauty is not something that is earned—it’s something you’re born with or the doctor helps you with, whatever. Beauty is what you do with it. [The judges of Miss Universe or Miss USA] always pick someone who embodies a certain kind of role model. It’s the girl that understands that the platform represents something bigger than themselves—that when they win this, it’s not about them but what they can do for others. If you want to be successful in life, it’s not about what you can win or how much money you make. It really, really starts by serving others. When you can develop a connection and you can serve other people, people will follow you, because, first, you’re inspirational, and two, you become influential. What the pageant does— it motivates every individual girl to really become the best of themselves. They’re trying to find the highest expression of themselves.”

Wenzel is among 229 contestants participating in the preliminary Miss California show on Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Pasadena Convention Center. The 20 contestants left will then go on to compete in the final show on Sunday, Jan. 13, at 4 p.m. Miss California pageant producer Keith Lewis finds Wenzel inspiring. “I so admire what Kylan’s doing, because she’s fought so hard to be here,” Lewis told Frontiers. “I think she will be successful in whatever she decides to do in her life. When we talked about her participating, she said, I really just want the other girls to accept me. And I think they not only accept her but will celebrate her because she’s loving and she’s open and courageous and she’s trying to do the best she can, like pretty much all of the rest of us.” The Miss California pageant will be webcast live for a fee of $15 at misscaliforniausa.com. Or you can buy tickets through Ticketmaster. A longer version of this story will be available on LGBT POV.

NEWS

EQCA’s New Executive Director Gets to Work By Karen Ocamb One month after officially assuming his position on Dec. 3 as the new executive director of the beleaguered statewide LGBT lobbying group Equality California, John O’Connor seems focused, a gay man on a mission. He is mindful of the pitfalls and the hefty responsibility of restoring luster to the tarnished organization, but he is confident in his own executive experience and dedication to achieving full equality. “When there is a long-term executive director like Geoff Kors, it’s never an easy transition after their departure, and I think we all know that Equality California had a particularly difficult time,” O’Connor said in a phone interview with Frontiers on Jan. 3. “But rather than dwelling on what mistakes were made, I want to talk about the vision for the organization moving forward.” O’Connor said he has been meeting with community leaders and donors and working on a strategy to rebuild the organization, the “heart and soul” of which is the 90-plus pieces of legislation EQCA passed over the last decade. “The actual agenda, in terms of pieces of new legislation we are going to propose, is not ready for public announcement yet,” O’Connor said. “I am brand-new on the job as of December, so we are playing a little bit of catch-up—but I’m getting fully up to speed.” But he has been busy, renewing the contract with respected legislative whiz Alice Kessler, with whom he has an existing friendship. “The continuity that Alice brings to the organization and her legislative expertise is extraordinary, and that is one of the great assets this organization has for 2013, moving forward,” O’Connor said. Additionally, O’Connor hired transgender EQCA Legislative Fellow Jo Michael to serve as the public face of the organization and do the leg-work in Sacramento. “His work is exemplary,” O’Connor said. “I called Alice and asked for a reference, and Alice referred to Jo as, ‘Well, he kind of reminds me of a young Alice Kessler when I first came to Sacramento—all freshfaced and eager and committed to the mission

30

FRONTIERSLA.COM

and wanting to work hard and do good.’” Additionally, O’Connor hired Jack Lawrence as the Development and Program Director. “He’s an extraordinary talent, and we’re lucky to have him,” O’Connor said. And he brought back Steve Meley as Finance Director. “The continuity and history of the organization that he brings—his reputation and relationship-wise,” O’Connor said. “He was able to walk in the door on day one and be effective, which was good, because we really had a bit of cleanup to do with the absence of a finance director throughout 2012.” O’Connor said he is still in the process of developing a work plan and budget for 2013 that he will present to the board next month. “There are a couple of co-factors for me to evaluate. What are the organization’s needs—and there are many competing priorities,” he said. “As the executive director and prudent manager, I need to move with caution before we start committing to a whole host of salaries.” O’Connor estimates that rebuilding the organization will take the entire year. However, he will operate under the Carver model of governance. “The board is giving me all the deference and authority I need to do my job, while at the same time being engaged in a really great leadership kind of way,” with a board transition committee helping with “the massive amount of outreach” he needs to do to stakeholders statewide. “The dynamic between me and the board is strong and healthy,” he said. “I am running the joint, without question, with a great amount of support and deference.” The Princeton, New Jersey-born O’Connor has experience working as a top executive at the California Hall of Fame, the California Museum for History, Women and the Arts, the Gill Foundation, the David Geffen Foundation and, most recently, he served as executive director of the LGBT Community Center of the Desert in Palm Springs, where he turned the organization around. But it was during his college years at Georgetown University from 1990-1994 that O’Connor

became “a mission-driving kind of guy.” “I came out when I was 18 years old in Washington, D.C., and while many of my peers at Georgetown were going to business school and were going to the school for foreign service and thinking about careers like that—my personal life, at a time when so much politically was happening in AIDS, where I could see my gay peers getting sick and dying...” O’Connor said. “And Georgetown, just prior to my arrival, after many years of a legal fight, won the right to organize a gay and lesbian student group on campus—so these personal concerns were more front-and-center for me at that time. And I got involved in ACT UP, and I met some of the people who were leading it, and I participated in some of the direct action. And I was inspired that the group of people, presumably with no political power, could come together and claim some political power. I saw how direct action changed the world. … I was really inspired that the world could be changed for the better—for me, for the other people that I loved and for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people throughout the country.” For more of the interview, go to LGBT POV.

FORGET THE GYM FUN FITNESS ALTERNATIVES FOR THE NEW YEAR By Mike Ciriaco

Gyms want you to believe you need them in order to be healthy. Sure, they provide equipment and varying levels of instruction, but there are many comparable fitness alternatives that don't involve monthly fees and high-pressure sales pitches. Los Angeles offers a bevy of exercise options to lose weight, improve core strength and increase lung capacity, many of which cater primarily to the LGBT community. Frontiers has the best gay-friendly fitness alternatives in SoCal to help you live healthier and happier.

CROSSFIT Developed in 2000 by Greg Glassman, CrossFit training is a strength and conditioning program incorporating constantly varied and functional movement. While workouts tend to be relatively brief (usually less than 20 minutes), they are also incredibly intense, demanding full exertion. This exercise option is ideal for any busy Angeleno looking to maximize results within a limited time frame.

CrossFit Sunset

Reebok CrossFit

Denizens of Echo Park recently acquired this 4,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art CrossFit facility right in their backyard. The refurbished industrial space combines typical training elements such as rowing machines, free weights and kettlebells with extra perks like a sprung floor and Astroturf. CFS strives to give a first-class, individualized experience and offers a free intro class and three private coaching sessions to introduce proper form and technique to anyone new to CrossFit. crossfitsunset.com

With owners like Yumi Lee, PJ Stahl and Ron Mathews, you know you’re going to receive a successful, muscle-blasting workout at Reebok CrossFit. Collectively, the RCF team has been lauded by publications such as Men’s Journal and has personally trained actors, models and athletes including Brad Pitt, Jessica Alba, P!nk, Hugh Jackman, Demi Moore, Orlando Bloom, David Beckham and Britney Spears. These venerable trainers not only own the gym but also serve as hands-on instructors, giving their classes an extra edge. reebokcrossfitlab.com

Brick CrossFit Brick provides many benefits for choosing its facilities—improved energy, increased strength, weight loss. But its primary advantage is the sense of community they offer their members. “There is an amazing sense of camaraderie that I truly have never felt at another gym or fitness establishment," beams BCF member Iheoma O. "That, combined with hardcore-drenched-in sweat, ‘you want us to do what?’ makes this place addictive.” Brick offers a free week membership at both its WeHo and Brentwood locations. brickcrossfit.com

FORGET THE GYM

CLASSES GAY LEAGUES One of the reasons people stray from fitness goals is because they find it boring. For some, going to the gym every other day to lift or jog on a treadmill is more tedious than the results are worth, and they easily find ways to talk themselves out of exercising. A preferable alternative is joining a sports league. This not only provides a workout but an application of athletic skill and social interaction that solo weightlifting and cardio lack. Southern California offers a variety of amateur athletic organizations to choose from, many with a gay focus.

Basketball Make your jock fantasy a reality. Lambda Basketball League is dedicated to providing the L.A. gay community with a well-organized and friendly sporting environment. New players are constantly encouraged to attend, no matter what skill level. It’s as simple as checking out the website, signing up and then showing up to one of the practices. In addition to providing the community with access to basketball, the organization strives to promote health education and community service. lambdabasketball.com

Skiing/Snowboarding Winter in L.A. ranges from mild to nonexistent, so if you want to see snow this season, your best bet is to schlep to the slopes. Fortunately, SoCal offers not just one but two gay-oriented ski/snowboard organizations. The first, The Arriba! Ski and Snowboard Club, regularly visits nearby Mammoth to hit the powder, as well as a number of international destinations, including Val d’Isère, France, and Nagano, Japan. The second, SAGA L.A.—Gay Ski, Snowboard and Social Club, was founded in 1975 by a group of self-described "transplanted gay skiers from Utah." The small circle has now expanded to nearly 200 members who attend 10 ski trips per season. arribaski.org; sagala.org

Water Polo For some reason, this sport where speedo clad athletes get wet and manhandle each other has always been an Olympics gay fan favorite. Joking aside, anyone who has actually competed in this

34

FRONTIERSLA.COM

sport knows the skill and endurance required to excel in the game. This caliber of competitor is ideal for West Hollywood Aquatics (WH2O), a masters swimming and water polo club with a roster of over 180 members in the SoCal area ranging from ex-Olympians to novices in the sport. There are daily coached workouts and seasonal clinics for players to hone their swimming and water polo talents. wh2o.org

Dodgeball

If team sports aren't your style, perhaps taking a class may better suit your needs. These classes still provide a social element, but without the pressures of actual athletic interaction. L.A. is brimming with unique and effective studios dedicated to improving your flexibility, rhythm and cardiovascular health.

Broadway Bodies The New York phenomenon has now expanded to the West Coast. This dance cardio workout melds both basic and challenging choreography with high impact aerobics set to show tunes, movie musicals and pop videos. Triple-threat Joe Komara utilizes his professional Broadway experience as the program's acting instructor, coordinator and choreographer. If you've ever seen a dance routine in a musical or a music video and thought to yourself, “I wish I could do that!,” then Broadway Bodies is the answer! la.broadwaybodies.com

Sweat Spot

Why should Silver Lake hipsters have all the ironic fun? The motto of WeHo's Stay Puft Dodgeball League is “Winning is for losers! We play for fun!” An offshoot of The World Dodgeball Society, the ultimate goal is gathering fun-loving folks from all walks of life. A mere $55 buys you into their 10-week season with games held every Tuesday at West Hollywood Park. Expect plenty of postgame shenanigans at unofficial Dodgeball clubhouse Gym Bar. dodgeball4ever.com

Richard Simmons isn't the only instructor in town that'll make you sweat. Ryan Heffington's Silver Lake-based dance studio, commonly known as The Sweat Spot, offers a full schedule that includes pilates, ballet, jazz, African and hip-hop, as well as Ryan's eponymous Sweaty Sundays. Since opening its doors in the summer of 2010, the studio's goal is to offer a supportive environment for dancers of all ages and skill levels. The only requirement to be a student at the Sweat Spot is a desire to move your body. thesweatspotla.com

Soccer

Runyon Canyon Yoga

Gaybors of L.A. shouldn't feel excluded. There are plenty of sports organizations throughout SoCal in which to participate. One example is Long Beach's LGBT Soccer Meet-Up Group. Like Long Beach itself, this group is laidback and casual. No trophies, intimidation or rough play—just an interest in the game. All ages, genders and skill levels are welcome. It’s an ideal situation for anyone interested in learning a new sport, meeting new people and discovering a new way to exercise. meetup.com/rainbow-soccer-group

Yoga is an ideal, non-impact workout suited for any age or athletic ability. The best part is that any Angeleno can practice it for free. Runyon Canyon offers yoga classes three to five times a day, seven days a week. The instructors are friendly and knowledgable and encourage neophytes to jump in with the experienced. Check the website for the daily schedules; grab a mat, towel and water bottle; then simply stretch your stress away. runyoncanyon-losangeles.com

BURN, BABY, BURN: FAT-BURNING DIET BY TERRI WEST Nutrition is essential when it comes to a healthy, sexy body. In fact, what many people don’t know is that a balanced diet is about 75 percent of getting lean and staying lean. Following a structured meal plan that offers food variety is the best way to achieve your goal. Time and time again, dieters fall short of attaining a lean physique because they take shortcuts by latching onto the newest weight-loss craze, hoping for speedy results. If you grasp the idea that you can be lean for a lifetime by following the basics, you will never need another short-term diet fix again. Fad weight loss products—including diet pills that suppress hunger (when you should be eating), low-carb diets that slow brain function and make you lethargic, harsh cleanses that often strip the stomach lining and produce hunger pangs, fasting that slows your metabolism and fruit diets that lack protein—are all temporary means to a dead end. Not only are these methods counterproductive to any long-term fitness goal, they screw up your body’s natural chemistry and functions. For sustainable results, you must eat foods that increase your metabolism and prevent your body from storing fat, including a rich balance of specific nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are necessary to efficiently feed your muscles for growth, give you energy and help you recover from workouts. These nutrients include “good fats,” those that are unsaturated, complex carbohydrates and protein. Losing fat does not mean that you have to deprive yourself. In fact, if dieters ate the amount of food contained in small meals throughout the day, they’d find it difficult to consume it all. So, you see, dieting doesn’t have to require limiting—it is all a matter of perspective. The average male whose goal is to lose body fat should consume 1,800-2,200 calories per day. That’s around 400 calories per meal. Feeding times and portion control are equally important. You should consume about five meals per day with three-hour gaps between meals to boost your metabolism and burn fat. Flushing your body with water after each meal is crucial as it purges toxins from your body and helps distribute nutrients. Electrolyte-enhanced water, like Smart Water, is best to replace electrolytes lost during exercise. Terri West is an ISSA-certified nutritionist and fitness coach. terriwest.com 38

THE PLAN Meal One, 7 a.m.: One cup plain oatmeal, 2 oz. fresh blueberries or blackberries, six boiled egg whites, multivitamin with minerals, 8 oz. water Workout, 8 a.m. Post-workout: Whey shake with whole banana, Tbsp. peanut butter, 8 oz. water. Two scoops of Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard with water. Meal Two, 10 a.m.: 4 oz. lean deli turkey sandwich with whole grain bread, tomato, red leaf lettuce, light mayo or mustard, whole grapefruit, 8 oz. water

Meal Three, 1 p.m.: Two chicken breasts, six broccoli spears with crowns, one cup brown rice, one large apple, 8 oz. water Meal Four, 4 p.m.: 4 oz. grilled or roasted turkey breast without skin, whole yam, six cauliflower crowns, 8 oz. water Meal Five, 7 p.m.: 3 oz. grilled tilapia fish fillet, six large asparagus spears, 1/2 cup brown rice, 8 oz. water Bedtime: Muscle Milk protein shake mixed with water, two scoops.

Note: No snacking allowed! Avoid salty foods and high sugar condiments. The above meal plan consists of fat-burning foods that boost the metabolism. The protein powder profiles are different. The post-workout whey protein is low in fat and sugar, yet gets into your bloodstream fast to quickly feed your muscles. Muscle Milk, on the other hand, has a combination fat profile and a protein blend that are released slowly into your bloodstream, feeding your muscles while at rest throughout the night. This meal plan must coincide with cardio workouts in addition to your regular strength training. Do 30 minutes of cardio in the morning after strength training, and another 45 minutes in the evening five times a week. Remember, your food intake is designed to give you energy, burn fat and increase your metabolism. Think of your body as a furnace and food its coal. Try eating this way for 14 days straight and you’ll soon see how easy it is to follow a balanced nutrition plan that gets you the results you want.

Richard Simmons Richard Simmons is a paradox. A flamboyant, ball-of-energy jokester who can burst into tears at the drop of a hat. A supreme motivator who has changed the lives of countless people but feels uncomfortable receiving a simple compliment. A workaholic who fosters self-esteem in others but makes selfdeprecating jokes and refers to himself as the clown court jester. Someone who takes the time to get to know everyone around him but doesn’t divulge anything about his personal life. A victim of bullying throughout his childhood (he weighed 238 pounds in high school), Richard opened up his fitness studio, Slimmons, 38 years ago. It has served as a safe, incredibly positive environment where people of all ages and athletic levels are welcomed with open arms—literally—to let go and get fit. He’s made terms such as “Deal-a-Meal” and “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” part of our pop culture lexicon. But Richard’s legacy will be as a patron saint to society’s outcasts who have been ostracized for being different. As he likes to say, everyone has a Richard Simmons story. Here’s his. It’s 6:30 on a Tuesday evening in Beverly Hills. Richard Simmons has just arrived at Slimmons to teach the “Sweat” class. As he enters the room, he greets everyone he passes—first-timers and decadeslong members—with a kiss on the cheek. When Richard approaches me, I tell him I interviewed him the previous night over the phone. Before I can even finish my sentence, he embraces me in one of the tightest and longest bear hugs I’ve ever experienced. When he lets me go, he is crying. His tears didn’t catch me completely by surprise, given our conversation the night before.

What was your childhood like? I was born to thin parents in New Orleans, Louisiana. I had a thin brother. Everything we eat in New Orleans is fried. When you die in New Orleans, they actually deep-fry you—either regular or spicy. I had this relationship

40

FRONTIERSLA.COM

with fried oysters, fried shrimp and po’ boys. I was born with very bad, flat feet and had to wear special shoes that my parents could hardly afford. Maybe food was my outlet for when people made fun of me because I wasn’t Mr. Macho or because I broke

out in show tunes. Because of my legs, I waddled, so my name in school was Penguinette. I had a few friends, mostly girls. I went to an all-boys, Catholic, jock high school. That wasn’t the easiest, either. I kept eating.

Did your sense of humor help you get through the hard times? Well, either you use your humor as a shield and make fun of yourself, or they beat you up. This one kid would come with a baseball bat and hit me in the back of my head. I’m a very insecure and emotional person. Whether people are laughing with me or at me is not really the point. Now I have a family in no matter what city I go to. People are wonderful to me [crying] and treat me like family. I write these people. I get up at 4 o’clock in the morning. I have lots of Facebook, Twitter, email messages, and a lot of them are: “Dear Richard, I’m 300 pounds. I’m diabetic and had a toe cut off. My husband thinks I’m too fat and we haven’t had sex in 10 years. And my kids make fun of me.” So it is my job to make that woman or man feel like a million bucks and a butterfly that can spread his or her wings. When I go to catch a plane for a personal appearance, it takes me a while to get to my gate because everybody wants to talk to me. I love it. It’s like hummingbird water to me. They’ll go, “My mother loves you. Could you call her?” And I do.

You seem like you internalize a lot. I do. I have panic attacks. And then I can’t eat. When I read these letters, I take it all personally. If someone gains their weight back, it’s my fault. I’ve never changed since I was a kid. We had a girl in grammar school who had a very bad life. Alcoholic father. I sold pralines on the street corner after school. One year, my parents asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I said to my father, “I want to go to Maison Blanche, and I want to buy a couple of really pretty dolls for a girl in my school.” [crying] When I went to school, I handed them to her. We never, ever talked about it. Years later, I was at Morrison Cafeteria and the girl in back of the desserts looked at me with endearing

Page 41

eyes and said, “Do you remember me? I’m the girl you gave those dolls to in elementary school. My daughter now has them.” She gave me a hug like I don’t think I’ve ever received. She said, “May all good things come to you.” [Blows nose] I go to these cities to teach big classes for a convention, and I have to go through areas I can’t even describe. I always keep some cash in my pocket in case I see someone who is homeless. I don’t care what they do with the money I give them. I can’t stand to see poverty. And you know what they say to me? [crying] “You’re Richard Simmons, and I used to workout with you with my grandmother.” I say to myself, “What happened to these lost souls?” They have become the out-

casts. I’m only one person handing out cash, and it’s very difficult to see these torn and tortured individuals. I’m not going to lie to you, I spend a lot of my time in tears. I wish I could do more. I’m doing a new DVD for children. With the money, I’m going to buy the largest TV for as many elementary schools as I can afford and give them all a DVD. I just wrote a song called “Piece of my Heart” that is about a woman whose husband is going to Afghanistan for the third time. With that money, I’m going to do something for the husbands and wives who live on the bases here in the United States. So I have big dreams. How should we be approaching food differently? God made six food groups: fruits, vegetables, dairy, fat, protein and starch. Nothing new is coming from the Manas from heaven. You should eat all six food groups. All of these celebrities and major companies that have diet drinks and special foods that I wouldn’t even feed my 16-year-old dog Hattie—pills, shots, drinks—should be ashamed of themselves. People spend all this money on hopeless promises. Right now the big thing is quick, fast weight loss—and by some very prominent doctors. I always say, “The scale doesn’t lie when you eat too much pie.”

on Saturday night. I have anything I want. Joan’s on Third makes an apple pie that, seriously, when I open the little plastic container, my hand shakes. Or I’ll go to Greenblatt’s on Sunset. They have a chocolate mousse pie. Mine is always salty because I cry while I’m eating it. When I travel, they put me up in these nice suites, and I open the room service menu. Of course, my fat self goes directly to appetizers. “Well, there is a nacho platter.” To me, I just see little singers on the top of the chips singing, “We Are the World.” [singing] “The time has come when it’s guacamole, cheese, and we melt together as one.” Then you have a quesadilla. “Wow, look at all the cheese.” [singing] “We are lots of cheese if you please.” I’m very hard on myself—even with my meals. You would think after all these years—but it’s part of us. Our eating habits were developed as children and they don’t go away. I went online to buy dolphin shorts for your class and I couldn’t find them anywhere. I came up with that outfit because when I lost all my weight, there was skin hanging. During Sweatin’ to the Oldies 1, I had to come up with an outfit that would hide it, because I was very self-conscious. I was watching the Harlem Globetrotters on TV [whistles the team’s theme song], and I noticed

Richard Simmons they had a tank top and shorts. I was at a store on Ventura Boulevard and there was a rack of dolphin shorts. They came in pink, green, black, red, purple and blue—and they were striped with white. I said, “If I wore a tank top that was scooped in the front and wore these— I’ve got good legs—that would not show the extra skin, and I’d feel good.” They introduced me to Leslie Wilshire, and she designed this tank top. I put it on and I was like Cinda-fella. These dolphin shorts were made in Asia with a material that went up in flames. The United States decided it would not have that material brought into the country. There are no more. But people go, “Dear Richard, I was cleaning out my garage and I came upon a box and I have three pair of dolphin shorts. I washed them and they’re yours.” I have, like, 300 pair. People send you their old dolphin shorts? Yes, they do. That’s amazing. What would you do if you ran out of them? I have 300 pairs! I’m 64! Chances are I’m not going to run out of them! They’re washed by hand. Why do you go back to the Howard Stern Show when he tortures you?

Because he really loves me. I don’t do it often, because he gets me upset. Sometimes I don’t do the show for years, just like David Letterman. There are shows I will not do with some people who have not been very kind to me over the years. There was a girl, Ava, in my infomercial who went from 168 pounds to 132. Last week, she emailed me and said, “I don’t have a boyfriend, and I work for Chelsea Handler. I don’t have a date to the Christmas party. Will you be my date?” I went and I was in a tank top with a martini glass on the front and back with olives. I don’t go to parties, because it is not my element. I was the only one in a tank top and shorts that were ripped. People were lining up to take pictures with me. I’d never met Chelsea. When I’m asked to do her show, I say, “Absolutely not.” She can be a little…. So, she came over to me and said, “You showed up to be her date and you helped this girl mentally and physically.” Then I had a little panic attack. [crying] She said, “I want you to do my show.” I go, “You know, you would say things that were hurtful to me, and I’m too old to be hurt.” She got really serious and she was like an inch from my nose and she said, “If you did my show, I would treat you with the utmost respect.”

Are you going to do it? What should I do? I think you should! OK, I’ll call her, and I’ll do it. What do you do when you’re not working? I used to go to Broadway shows, but they’re late. The last time I went to the theatre, it was Les Mis in New York. I had to go to the bathroom. I’m in the bathroom minding my own business, doing my business, and all of a sudden I hear a rush of people come in. It’s a private

thing. You’re in a stall. That’s your world right there in that stall. Now, I hear someone banging on the door. You know what happens when you’re interrupted going to the bathroom—you freeze. So I zip up and there are 10 policemen. They go [in a New York accent], “Rich! What are you doing in here?” I said, “Well, I was going to the bathroom.” They said, “There’s been a bomb threat, and you’re the only one in the theatre.” So I don’t go to the theatre anymore. ne of the many reasons to visit Kauai is to experience the island’s lush vegetation and dramatic landscapes. Of all the Hawaiian Islands, Kauai was nicknamed The Garden Island for good reason, and a perfect way to experience the beauty Kauai has to offer is to tour one or all three of the island’s National Tropical Botanical Gardens. Created by Congressional Charter in 1964, the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) is a nonprofit institute devoted to conservation, education and scientific research of tropical plants from all over the planet. Five of these beloved gardens exist in the United States— one in Florida and four in Hawaii. A testament to the island’s namesake, three of the gardens in Hawaii are on Kauai, and all are unique and worthy of exploration. Situated on Kauai’s south shore in Lawai near the resorts of Poipu Beach, McBryde Gardens features 250 acres of rare tropical plants that were once part of Kauai’s Lawai Ahupua’a, an ancient Hawaiian division of land running from the uplands to the sea, following the natural boundaries of the watershed. After European contact, this collective system was abolished in favor of private land ownership. The McBryde family leased the Lawai Valley from Queen Emma of Hawaii, who kept a cottage as well as the surrounding land for herself. After her death, the family purchased the land and began sugar cane production in the upper valley in the early 1900s while tenant farmers in the lower valley continued to farm traditional Hawaiian crops such as taro. In 1938, Alexander McBryde sold the property to banking and real estate baron Robert Allerton from Chicago, who was an avid collector

and patron of the arts. Allerton studied art in Europe and admired the landscaping of the formal gardens he visited there. Around that time, Allerton met John Gregg, a young architectural student at the University of Illinois, who he later adopted. The two men traveled the world on collecting trips, purchasing works of art, classical statuary and obtaining tropical species to plant in what is now known as Allerton Gardens. Allerton’s activism in the 1960’s contributed to the creation of the NTBG, which assumed stewardship of the land in the 1990s. Today, neighboring McBryde and Allerton Gardens provide a sanctuary for both aesthetic and scientific treasures. Diverse habitats and landscapes include cascading waterfalls, lush pathways and even a pristine beach that are home to collections of rare palms, countless species of flowering plants and trees, as well as tropical species of culinary interest including cacao (chocolate), ginger and vanilla. NTBG’s gardens on Kauai are a botanical Noah’s Ark, providing unparalleled biodiversity of native and exotic plants, making it an essential resource for the study of endangered plants and trees that may be difficult to find or are extinct in the wild. Research conducted at the NTBG not only helps preserve many species of tropical plants—it provides critical data for medical studies in the search for cures to deadly diseases.

The NTBG’s innovative Breadfruit Institute also combats deforestation and hunger in developing nations in the tropics by propagating the beautiful and highly nutritious breadfruit tree (Ulu), a native of the Asia Pacific region. A staple crop in Polynesia, breadfruit was sought as a food source for slaves by the crew of the English ship HMS Bounty during its infamous voyage to Tahiti that ended in mutiny in 1789. On the north shore of Kauai, near the starting point for the world-famous Kalalau Trail, NTBG’s Limahuli Garden and Preserve flourishes in a remote valley protected by soaring green cliffs with sweeping views of the Pacific. Lumahili Garden was named best natural botanical garden in the United States by the American Horticultural Society for its sound environmental practices and plant conservation. Some of the unusual native plants growing at Limahuli Garden include Pritchardia (Loulu), the only species of palm native to Hawaii, and the critically endangered Brighamia Insignis (Alula), aptly called “cabbage on a stick,” which is now virtually extinct in the wild. The National Tropical Botanical Gardens offer visitors an incredible experience of beauty and inspiration—the true essence of Kauai. ntbg.org

RESTAURANTS LIGHTEN UP ON WEHO’S ‘HEALTH ROW’ BY NICK RUFCA

When the holiday rush transitions to Happy New Year, most of us feel rejuvenated, energized and, quite frankly, extremely full of food. Eating indulgently practically becomes a requirement during the barrage of parties, dinners and gatherings that make up the entire month of December. If one of your 2013 resolutions is to eat better, then the stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard between La Cienega and San Vicente Boulevards will provide you with plenty of tantalizing meal options fit for any diet. I refer to the restaurants along these city blocks as WeHo’s “Health Row.” Here’s a sampling of what they have to offer.

Tender Greens

Body Factory

O-Burger

Fresh Corn Grill

Pressed Juicery

Fresh, local ingredients comprise the menu, and the open kitchen adjacent to the cafeteria-style line to the register allows you to watch your meal get made from start to finish. The Backyard Steak Salad is an ideal serving of low-carb protein, while the Happy Vegan is actually four grain-based, meat-free items (including delicious green hummus), as light as it is flavorful. 8759 Santa Monica Blvd., (310) 3581919; tendergreensfood.com

All of its top-notch smoothies contain between 30-40 grams of protein, with no added sugar. The mint-colored BodyFuel smoothie is their ‘signature’ blend, made with pineapples and banana. The PB&Jelly is blissfully like drinking the sandwich it’s named for. 8591 Santa Monica Blvd., (888) 263-9322; bodyfactory.com

The all-organic burger shop is a great place to grab lunch without worrying about your waistline. Its free-range turkey burger bowl is a nice balance of veggies and lean protein without the bloat, while the housemade veggie burger patty, filled with spinach, corn, carrots and peas, is the best in town. 8593 Santa Monica Blvd., (310) 854-0234; oburger.net

Seeking to add more Omega3s to your diet? The grilled salmon, moist and packed with flavor, is outstanding at Fresh Corn Grill. Add it to any of their salads—it’s particularly great in the Cobb—enjoy it on a sandwich or add a vegetable side such as broccoli or asparagus for a protein-packed power meal. 8714 Santa Monica Blvd., (310) 855-9592; freshcorngrill.com

If you’ve taken an oath to eat more vegetables, there’s no better time to visit the latest outpost of this raw, fresh juice chain. The “Roots” juices are surprisingly delicious combinations that often include beets, kale and carrots. If you’re looking for a food-fueled internal detox, the Green Alkalizer—a fresh blend of cucumber, apple, lemon and ginger—is the way to go. 8714 Santa Monica Blvd., (310) 8544407; pressedjuicery.com

REVIEWS 56 UP Opens Jan. 18

Even for those who have never seen an Up series, 56 Up is a fascinating portrait of nearly a dozen British folks who have been interviewed every seven years. The documentary series—far better than any reality TV today—shows in judiciously edited clips how these folks have evolved over time. Each subject is given 10-15 minutes of screen time—sometimes in pairs—and they mostly talk about their experiences with education, work, marriage and divorce (alas, none are queer), their kids, their successes/failures, happiness, loneliness, regrets and disappointments. The self-reflexive nature of the interviews will prompt viewers to think about their lives in reverse and as counterexamples. Significantly, several participants—including Peter, who returns after a nearly 30-year absence—seek to correct misperceptions about things they said, or what previous entries in the Up series have shown. And herein lies the most interesting part of the series; the contractions and mistakes folks have made and admit to making show how much (or how little) they have changed in the ensuing years. As such, this backwards glance at life surely proves the Jesuit maxim, “Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man.” —Gary M. Kramer

A French farce with a gay Jewish twist, director Mikael Buch’s slap-happy feature begins in Finland, where Reuben (Maury) and Teemu (Niemi) live in relative happiness. A misunderstanding involving a whole lot of money causes the couple to split, and Reuben returns to his Paris hometown, tail between his legs, just in time for Passover. Pining for his dear Teemu and feeling even more rudderless, the fey, wispy Reuben deals with his cloying and clueless mother (Maura), troubled siblings and a frisky old lawyer, Maurice (Jean-Luc Bideau). Meanwhile, up north, Teemu experiences his own revelations and decides to try and reconcile with Reuben. At its best when in full-on farce mode, Let My People Go! does pack a few hearty laughs, particularly when Maurice pursues Reuben—their initial encounter at a gay club called Out of Egypt is hysterical. However, Reuben makes for a lame protagonist, not as much for his stylized wimpy manner as a lack of definition and personality. Part of the film is dedicated to Reuben pondering his Jewishness, but it’s hollow and barely compelling. Carmen Maura, so delightful in Almódovar films, shouldn’t even be here at all, really, although at least the production design and cinematography is as colorful as some of that superior director’s works. —Lawrence Ferber

The problem with most big-issue movies that take place among farming communities is that they usually crumble under the weight of their intentions while ladling on insipidly folksy aphorisms. Think Country or The River, both from 1984, wherein the humble little people (played by slumming stars) go up against the odds to save their land and way of life. Written by John Krasinski and Matt Damon, and directed by the reliable Gus Van Sant, Promised Land avoids nearly all pitfalls of the genre by simply not stereotyping its people. The duo’s script—about a corporate middleman sent to buy farmland for natural gas fracking—is slangy, colloquial. Van Sant doesn’t overdo wide shots of majestic farmlands; he’s a restrained tourist just showing us how it is. And the actors are all uniformly up to snuff, from Damon’s corporate-climbing antihero to Frances McDormand’s tart sidekick to Krasinski’s environmental rabblerouser. The script—and Van Sant—relies too heavily on Hal Holbrook as the moral voice of the people, yet that’s balanced by Rosemarie DeWitt’s warm, sensual presence as Damon’s possible love interest. It’s a fine, flawed movie about a hot-button topic that rarely overplays its hand. —Dan Loughry

Outspoken smartass Carson Phillips (screenwriter Colfer) is different from his classmates at Clover High. Unlike them, he wants to leave his small town and its small-minded people. Carson dreams of being an editor at The New Yorker and winning a Nobel Prize. But his future dies—just like he does—when Carson gets struck by lightning. Employing an extended flashback, the film shows it’s never too late to change one’s life. Colfer’s script has salient messages about believing in one’s self and standing up to authority, but it also emphasizes that everyone has delusions and/or something to hide. Struck by Lightning adequately chronicles how Carson manipulates the popular students (cue stereotypes) to contributing to his literary magazine (which he self-centeredly thinks will help him get into college). The film’s wisdom is better than its dumb comedy, in part because Carson’s self-deprecation quickly gets annoying. Furthermore, most of the salacious elements—the closeted gay guys, the cheerleader having an affair with a coach, etc.—are played too safe; Lightning needs a Heatherslike bite. And while a subplot involving Carson’s divorced parents (Mulroney and the terrific Janney) echoes the film’s points about life being unfair or without meaning, it seems like filler in an already slight film. —Gary M. Kramer

2013 Theater Preview The Scottsboro Boys

by Les Spindle

WHAT CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO IN SOCAL THEATER IN THE NEW YEAR? FOLLOWING ARE SOME EXPECTED HIGHLIGHTS.

PHOTO: HENRY DIROCCO

Music to Your Ears There’s plenty of exciting news for musical theater aficionados. At the top of the list is the L.A. premiere of composer John Kander and late lyricist Fred Ebb’s masterful The Scottsboro Boys (May 21-June 30), which richly deserved its 12 Tony nominations in 2010. This brilliantly accomplished songwriting team (whose triumphs include Cabaret, Chicago and Kiss of the Spider Woman) capped off its career with this galvanizing show, a sardonic portrait of racial bigotry in the South in the form of a blackface burlesque. It made its stunning West Coast debut in La Jolla last May. Ahmanson Theatre, centertheatregroup.org Three shows announced by the fast-rising 3D Theatricals in Orange County are generating excitement. Most anticipated is a rare revival of the classic Jule Styne-Bob Merrill musical Funny Girl (Sept. 6-22), the vehicle that rocketed Barbra Streisand to stage and film stardom, earning her only acting Oscar. There was enormous disappointment when the first Broadway revival of this 1964 classic was canceled prior to its premiere at the Ahmanson Theatre last February. Streisand is so strongly associated with this vehicle that filling the lead role of vaudeville superstar Fanny Brice has always seemed impossibly daunting. Bring on the challenge! Other gems among 3D’s ambitious season will be the sprightly Dolly Parton women’s-lib musical 9 to 5 (Feb. 24-March 1), which had its world premiere at the Ahmanson in 2008; and Jason Robert Brown’s Tonywinning Parade (May 10-23), a masterful history-based musical with a social conscience. 3D Theatricals at Plummer Auditorium, Fullerton, 3dtshows.com Andrew Lloyd Webber fans won’t want to miss a rare revisit to the delicious Sunset Boulevard (July 1228), based on the classic Billy Wilder film in which retired silent screen goddess Norma Desmond is once again ready for her close-up. Divas such as Patti LuPone, Glenn Close, Betty Buckley and Petula Clark have starred in prior renditions, while Faye Dunaway was notoriously fired by Webber prior to her L.A. debut in this role. Musical Theatre West, Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach, musical.org. Two world-premiere musicals certainly whet the appetite—a stage adaptation of Jackie Gleason’s unforgettable 1950s sitcom The Honeymooners (Globe Playhouse, San Diego, Sept. 8-Oct. 27, oldglobe.org) and

Sleepless in Seattle, based on the vintage Tom HanksMeg Ryan rom-com (Pasadena Playhouse, June dates TBA, pasadenaplayhouse.org). The Pantages Theatre offers several highly anticipated tuners, including the campy Priscilla Queen of the Desert (May 28-June 16); Catch Me If You Can (March 12-24), based on the hit Spielberg film; the preBroadway Jekyll & Hyde (Feb. 12-March 3), starring Tony nominee Constantine Maroulis; and Sister Act (July 9-28), which originally premiered at Pasadena Playhouse, prior to major reworking for its London and Broadway bows. broadwayla.org Two plays at the Ahmanson will include strong musical elements. The Glasgow-originated Backbeat by Ian Softley and Stephen Jeffries (Jan. 30-March 1), directed by David Leveaux, makes its U.S. premiere here in a pre-Broadway run. It‘s about the launching of the Beatles in the 1960s, featuring many of their classic songs. End of the Rainbow (March 20-April 13), Peter Quilter’s highly acclaimed play, stars Olivier Award winner and Tony nominee Tracie Bennett, reprising her celebrated London and Broadway portrayal of superstar Judy Garland in 1968 as the troubled luminary attempts a late-career comeback. centertheatregroup.org

Dramatically Speaking A Parallelogram, by Pulitzer prize and Tony-winning playwright Bruce Norris (Clybourne Park, The Pain and the Itch), directed by Ann D. Shapiro, is a darkly comic play about a woman who believes she can predict the future. Mark Taper Forum, July 21-Aug. 18, centertheatregroup.org Cassiopeia, by last year’s LADCC award-winning playwright David Weiner (Extraordinary Chambers), follows a fateful meeting on an airplane between two misfits: a math prodigy and a maid from the rural South. Theatre @ Boston Court, Jan 26-Feb. 24, bostoncourt.com Renowned playwright-screenwriter Neil LaBute premieres his adaptation of August Strindberg’s lacerating classic, Miss Julie. Set in the early 1900s, the play chronicles a night-long flirtation and seduction between a wealthy lady of the house and one of her father’s footmen. Geffen Playhouse, March 6-April 7, geffenplayhouse.com Making its West Coast bow is the sizzling and controversial The Deep Throat Sex Scandal by David Bertolino, about the making of the groundbreaking 1970s porn film Deep Throat. Helmed by adult film director Jerry Douglas, the play will feature different actors each week. Zephyr Theatre, Jan. 24-Feb. 17, deepthroattheplay.com

MY TEACHER IN LIFE AND DEATH, AND NOW LIFE This column was supposed to be an interview I just did with entrepreneur and philanthropist Tom Whitman. I'll get to that in a second. My friend, Mark Hundahl, just passed away. Just a few weeks ago I wrote of his fight with cancer and how I was hoping and praying he would make it. He didn't, and it has rocked my world. Mark was co-owner of this magazine. He also once owned and operated one of the coolest clubs ever in Los Angeles, Probe. But more than that, much more, he was my friend. Mark gifted me with his love and support. He made me laugh. He was always pushing me not to be a good Dana Miller. He always wanted me to be the best Dana Miller. I have some regrets. I've made mistakes. But he never judged me. He always encouraged me. I have wrestled with depression and alcohol abuse. He never made me feel like a loser. He knew about my ups and downs and how I blew so much and how often. And he was always there to point me in the right direction and make me giggle. And one of the coolest things is, Mark did that for a lot of people. It is how he lived his life. I wasn't special—he just saw something in me I didn't see in myself. We would talk and break bread, and thinking back upon it, it was mostly about me. How I was doing. This year, with the good Lord’s blessing, I will celebrate the 10th anniversary of this column. And I can't remember ever discussing them with Mark, the co-owner of the mag! We always managed to find other things to chat about. I have not done well with this death. In my life, I have seen hundreds die. I always got through it. It was a mind-numbing jolt that I anesthetized myself to get through. I can't go back there. I will not go back there. It is everything Mark would have disapproved of. He likely would not judge me. He just would quietly hate it. I do know the mourning of any death is about the living. And I also know Mark would have been there to help me get through it. Crazy, right? So then I read of Brian Putnam passing. Brian was a local photographer who was always sweet to me. He took my picture for this column a few times. He took his own life before Christmas. Wow, right? Life is all about lessons learned. We wake up, look at what we learned and try and make a better person, a better soul. I need to learn from these deaths. One day at a time. Because, you know, none of this is easy. Likely it was never very easy for anybody, right? You likely have been there in some form or fashion. This will pass, and I need to do it with Mark's gentle spirit looking over my shoulder. I need to take the lead on this. Neither death was right, easy or sane. But both lives were robbed way too damn early, and I need to view it as a wakeup call. Life is short, and it is just what you make of it. Last week a lot of us promised to reset our direction and restart a new life in the new year. This is exactly what I need to do right now. And for me, I will use the power of death to win the battle. I hate that they are both gone. Yet it likely is something to use to make a better life. I have my mission, and I need to honor these guys with a better life from me. I will find some semblance of sanity in this insanity. Oh, and next issue I promise to write the Tom Whitman interview!

MY BEST TWEETS OF 2012! Les MisĂŠrables is like a monster cock... It looks good, but it's way too long and painful. Anne Hathaway on the first thing she ate after ultra slim-down for Les Mis: "A big baked potato with sun-dried tomatoes!" #GoFuckYourself If you like salty chocolate you'll love my post-holiday treat: You eat an entire box of half-priced Christmas chocolate Santas while sobbing. True story: A woman got hit by a cab on her way to my Chicago show tonight & refused treatment from EMT's to see the show instead! #TrueFan Hey lady at the Phx airport... Please stop sucking mayonnaise out of that condiment packet. #LikeTotallyGross How many goddamn shows can Whitney Cummings fucking have on TV!? #SeriouslyTellMe Comedy is the only thing that can KILL one night and then just DIE the next. Watching Liz & Dick on Lifetime... I've seen better sets in porn movies. Come to think of it, I've seen better acting in them, too. OMG, Life of Pi was amazing! Not to be confused with Life of Pie: The Christina Aguilera Story, which was just so-so. #IShouldBeAshamed It was announced that they are going to stop making Twinkies. Christina Aguilera is now on suicide watch. #DontKillTheMessenger Life is like Scrabble... You have to lose sometimes to get better at it. I don't trust a comedian who's too good looking. And on that note, I would let Jeffrey Ross pack my parachute.

Gonna guess the only Democrat who wasn't very happy AFTER the election was that new girl on SNL who played Ann Romney. I shan't joke about how if you still want something yellow, spongey & creamfilled you can always trick w/George Takei. #TakeTheHighRoad I love love loved Anna Karenina! Best "period piece" since Carrie. The worst mistake you can make is only talking to people you want to fuck. Why is it OK for people to scream at the top of their lungs in public like a mental patient so long as it's about Jesus? #FreedomFROMReligion What's the technical term for a friend who makes you eat fattening, unhealthy food? An "enibbler" of course! #InventingNewWords Watching show about a woman MANY years ago who hung herself using her underwear. Just how petite was she? Or how strong were those skivvies? Dressing as the exotic animal of your choice & doing high-impact cardio funk aerobics is all the rage. It's called ZOOmba #InsertRimshotHere My favorite scene from Paranormal Activity 17 will be when the lights dim ever-soslightly whenever the A/C kicks on. #BeatingADeadHorse Comedy is like sex... If it doesn't hurt a little, you're not doing it right. Seth McFarland just came out... And presented the Emmy for Outstanding Reality Show Host. Fun thing to say after you yawn: "So sorry... I'm not tired, you're boring."

"I never denied those rumors because I was offended and didn't want to offend my friends who were gay—as if being gay were some kind of fucking disease." —Matt Damon addresses why he never commented on the rumors that he and Ben Affleck were lovers.

As we embark on a new year, I'd like to share a bit of knowledge I picked up towards the tail end of 2012. When someone asks you any question that begins with the words, "What do you think about...,” they really don't want to know what you think. If they agree with you, they'll go on and on repeating exactly what you've said. And if they disagree, you'll be told you are wrong with hours of reasons why. So take a tip from Billy Masters—when asked "what do you think....,” take a beat, look about thoughtfully, and then say, "Well, what do you think?" Once they tell you in detail what they think, you can simply say, "I agree.” It will save you oodles of time.

Gideon really cleans up

Before we discuss new news, let's see how some of our favorite celebs spent the holiday season. Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka stayed up until 2 a.m. on Christmas Eve setting up an elaborate train set for son Gideon, and all he wanted to do on Christmas morning was play with a broom! Dustin Lance Black was invited to one of the many White House Christmas parties—coincidentally (or not), the same one that CNN's Don Lemon was at (I believe one of them brought model Robby Rasmussen). A friend sent me a photo of what I thought was Barbara Eden and her grandchildren. It was Kathy Griffin and her nieces and nephew. Oops. True to his word, Good Morning America weatherman Sam Champion married his beau Rubem Robierb in NYC a few days before Christmas. The twosome had a reception in Miami on New Year's Eve. Champion said, "It's a shame we can't officially have a legal ceremony in Florida. We're not separating them, because we'd like to do it 62

FRONTIERSLA.COM

twice. In New York, it will be legal. Miami will be the spiritual side to celebrate with the people who have been with us and supporting us and been a part of our lives since we met." There's another significance to the date. The pair met at a New Year's Eve party in Miami three years ago. Of course, we also lost some noted individuals over the holidays. While the mainstream commemorated the lives of Jack Klugman and Charles Durning, we'd like to remember two others who didn't get quite the same amount of attention. Fontella Bass might be known as a one-hit wonder, but most singers would kill to be known for singing "Rescue Me.” Gay porn actor Josh Weston made a splash as a Falcon star at the turn of the century, but got closer to his real self in more recent videos. He was working on a memoir titled Sleeping My Way to the Bottom and was somewhat sanguine about his HIV status. When one interviewer asked where he saw himself in three years, Josh responded, "Good question—do porn stars go to heaven?" I think they do. I was very concerned when a London newspaper reported that Sir Ian McKellen has prostate cancer. His people quickly shot down concern for the actor, saying the quote was taken from an old interview. Sir Ian is, in fact, fine. Yes, he did get two hearing aids, is having cataracts removed from his eyes and is having a few teeth implanted. Other than that, he is the picture of health. He's also about to start work on his first sitcom for British television. Vicious is about a bickering older gay couple. McKellen's other half will be played by the equally fabulous Sir Derek Jacobi. As it turns out, the two went to university together, and Ian actually was quite smitten with the future Emperor Claudius. "I certainly had a crush on him. He was a very attractive young man. If things had been different, maybe we would be the couple in the sitcom." The show is being produced by my dear friend, Gary Janetti, who was executive producer on Will & Grace, and is also the real-life boyfriend of Brad Goreski. After several delays, the Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra was shot this summer. Directed by Stephen Soder-

bergh, the flick stars Michael Douglas as the popular pianist and Matt Damon as his secret lover Scott Thorson. Although it doesn't hit HBO until spring, Damon did an interview with Playboy, discussing the film. "Michael was a wonderful kisser. I had to come out of the pool, go over to him, straddle him on a chaise lounge and start kissing him. It's not like I kiss him just once. We drew it up like a football plan." Matt also promises that we'll see quite a bit of skin. "Normally I'd say no to nudity, but I just did a lot of it playing the longterm partner of Liberace. I mean, it's tastefully done. But this movie's not going to be for everyone." Our "Ask Billy" question comes from Frank in New Jersey: "You're Orthodox, right? Did you hear about that calendar of hot nude Orthodox priests? Is it for real? Are they really priests?" This is how rumors get started. I should know—I've started my fair share. It's not a calendar of hot nude Orthodox priests. Some of them are wearing their collars! That said, the 2013 Orthodox Calendar features what is referred to as "12 seductive artistic pictures of Orthodox priests and their guests.” I'm quite partial to Mr. January, Father Vladimir from the Ukraine, who is photographed with his wife Yulia and his three sons, who look like they walked

2013 Orthodox Calendar

out of a Bel Ami video (assuming they could get a work permit to shoot in the Czech Republic). May features brother priests, Jacob and Esua, who "have been together their entire lives and always take care of one another.” I bet they do! I must immediately order this calendar from Orthodox-Calendar.com. What's a new year without a new

celebrity nude? I guess I shouldn't be surprised that it comes from Big Brother alum Will Wikle. Even while he's continuing work as an ER nurse, he built up an impressive physique and résumé as a much-sought-after NYC go-go boy. In fact, we quoted him in our wrap up from 2011: "God blessed me with a bountiful butt.” This year, he popped up in a video walking around Manhattan clad in the smallest pair of pink Timoteo undies I've ever seen to promote Daniel Nardicio's DWorld Underwear Party on Fire Island. A more explicit video was made for the party in Manhattan. Will was cast as a horny and lonely missionary whose neighbors in a sleazy motel include a dozen or so hot underwear models in the midst of a sex party. Of course, Will ends up the centerpiece—much like that old video of Kevin Williams on the Lazy Susan! What could he do to top that (so to speak)? Finally show all, which he did in some new nude shots with porn star Benjamin Godfre. Why? Who knows. Allegedly, Will is still in a long-distance relationship with former porn pup Mason Star, but as someone who has been in a few of those, I wouldn't read too much into it. Instead, just check out the pretty pics of his penis on BillyMasters.com. When I can segue from hot priests to reality stars in the missionary position, it's definitely time to end yet another column. I think this might be the first time nude priests have been featured on BillyMasters.com—the site that is always interested in what you think. In fact, if there's something you'd like me to look into, drop a note to Billy@Billy Masters.com and I promise to get back to you before Kathy Griffin stars in a remake of I Dream of Jeannie! Until next time, remember, one man's filth is another man's Bible. Kathy Griffin with her nieces and nephew.

NOAH'S ARC AT MARSHALLS We've all heard the tale—after the great flood, Noah walked his animals into the arc two by two. Apparently, the same ideology was enacted by the homosexuals at the Marshalls on Ventura in Studio City last week. You see, as we were waiting in line for the dressing room at our absolutely favorite bargain basement—yes, Gossip Gay looks like Rodeo Drive while clandestinely being a discount diva!—we espied with our queer little eye four quite fabulous queers in line before us, also ready and waiting to try on their up-to-70-percent-off wears. After cruising them for a bit (with our signature wink and hair flip, no less!) and receiving no response, Gossip Gay soon realized these were not single-andready-to-mingle boys but two-by-two couples. So we did what we always do when we see happy gay couples—we stop flirting and start judging them. (And, quite honestly, after no longer being blinded by the potential for a little parking lot fun, we could clearly see that they were fatties in faux-designer Target dance pants. But we digress...) Anywho, as both couples got to the front of the lackadaisical line, they requested that they each share a dressing room. Yes, apparently the foursome lacked any and all ability to make decisions on what to wear without the instantaneous approval of their better halves. But the salesgirl was not having it—not one minimum wage bit! Now, perhaps it was due to homophobia (but most likely we assume it was due to her post-holiday-shoppers-are-really-pissing-me-off mentality), but said salesgirl unleashed a very un-Shakespearean soliloquy about "how many" company policies "two men or two anybodies" in the dressing room at once "would violate," and she "simply couldn't have that up in here!" Well, as you can imagine, both sets of fatty couples bitched, bitched and then bitched some more—but eventually they accepted that they would have to disengage while slipping off their Target bottoms. Needless to say, we waited for 17 minutes and watched on, quite pathetically amused, as the boys turned the dressing room into Project Runway. (We were never asked our opinion, but our POV—with each outfit, they continued to look more and more like two-dollar hookers. But then again, maybe that's what they were going for, eh?) Either way, we hate them and hope they soon realize the kinda-cute blonde is cheating on his older fatty daddy with the kinda kept-boy Latin Big & Tall model. 2013 is sure to include a trip to Singlesville for all these Marshalls-loving men, and the ever-bitter Gossip Gay loves it!

WITH AARON SAVVY, ACSM Certified Trainer

FINDING THE BEST FITNESS TRAINER

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, where does your vanity lie when it comes to how satisfied you are with how your body looks? How good do you want your body to look, and to what extent will you sacrifice to do so? OK, let me ask you this: what is your fitness goal? Is it to gain lean muscle mass? Is it to lose weight or perhaps bulk up? We all have a goal on how we want to look and feel, but it seems as though we fall short on the exact plan to do so. We also know that nutrition plays an important part as well. How much do we eat, what do we eat and how often do we eat? Do we need to take supplements, and if so, which ones? All of this can create quite a whirlwind of confusion and frustration if we do not know the proper way to begin our fitness and nutritional plan. Being a fitness trainer myself has allowed me to receive the necessary training and schooling to answer these questions. Along with myself, there are numerous other good qualified personal trainers eager to assist those in need. So what do we look for to assure we have the best fitness trainer? The first step is to meet with the trainer. We all know that appearance is the first thing we notice. What does this trainer look like? Does he or she appear to be fit? An overweight trainer shows signs of a poor diet and a lack of exercise. It’s a little hard to get motivated— let alone pay someone—who is in perhaps worse shape than yourself. The trainer should look like a trainer. I think professionalism in how a trainer dresses says a lot. I have seen trainers wear baggy pants and a shirt that passes their knees. Do not be afraid to ask questions. The best fitness trainers will ask you numerous questions about your fitness goals, health, safety, nutrition and past workout experiences. With

64

FRONTIERSLA.COM

these questions, a good fitness trainer will then listen. Too many times have I seen a trainer ask a question to a potential or current client only then to interrupt them! Eye contact is important. A trainer that lacks in eye contact may suggest a lack of knowledge or inexperience on their part. Remember—you’re paying for this trainer, so screening them is not a bad idea. Asking for referrals and speaking to past or current clients can give you some insight into whether or not this trainer would be a good match for you. A lot of trainers will offer their first training session for free. Use this session to see how much attention this trainer gives you. Do they look around? Do they interrupt your session to talk to others? Are they sleepy with closed eyes? Are they talking to you about miscellaneous things in the middle of your exercise? A trainer that drags in these unfocused areas depicts that he or she is a poor trainer. Be an investigator! If you’re already working out at a gym, the chance of personal trainers being around you is high. Watch them and see how they interact with their client. Follow your instincts while watching and observing. If ever in a workout in which you physically cannot lift a weight that a trainer gives you, he or she should lower the weight, still challenging you, but allowing you to maintain control at the same time. Sad but true, I have seen trainers not lower the weight, insisting their client is being lazy. Injury is sure to follow in the form of pulled tendons, torn rotator cuffs and overextensions of the joints. The best fitness trainers will live, breathe and eat what they teach! President of AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) president@aidshealth.org — aidshealth.org

HYPERSEXUAL Experts will continue to debate whether there is such a thing as sex addiction and what the exact definition of it may be. Regardless, there is a wide range of human behavior. Many people have only a passing interest in sex. Others think about it constantly and do it as often as possible. The average American man has seven sex partners in a lifetime. A gay man can have that many in an evening at a sex club. So whether you are a "sex addict" or simply have a "healthy" sex drive, we know that some people are hypersexual. Hypersexuality is not just about how much sex you have. It is also about how you see the world and how people see you. If your daily life is organized around having sex or having people want you, it is different than the person who is not very concerned about their appearance and would just as soon watch TV as make the scene. Calling it hypersexual sounds judgmental on its face, but the question is whether it truly makes you happy. Comedian Bill Maher joked that there was absolutely nothing abnormal about being gay other than how much time you have to spend at the gym. I think it is safe to say that the average gay man is more concerned about how he looks naked than the average straight man. Of course, there are large percentages of both groups who do not fit into this stereotype. Also, the "gay lifestyle," whatever that may be, is more geared toward sex than the life of a married straight man. Trying to figure out what represents balance is elusive. Sex is so fulfilling that almost nothing can compete with it. Being wanted for your sex appeal is one of the biggest affirmations we can feel. But hypersexuality also carries many dangers. We can do things in the constant pursuit of sex that hurt ourselves or others emotionally and physically. Have you ever slept with a good friend’s boyfriend? Have you ever canceled dinner with your family because of a hookup? Have you made up an elaborate scheme to deceive your partner? Have you ever caught a bug because you just had to have sex, no matter what? Have you ever shaved a couple of days off abstaining from sex after being treated for an STD because you needed to get back into the action? Does everything other than hunting for sex seem boring? This isn't an indictment. Most people reading this have done one or more of these things. I am just asking you to think about whether looking at the world only through sexual lenses might not be distorting your vision.

BY ROBERT GAMBOA

THREE DAILY TOOLS THAT GET ME THROUGH: GRATITUDE, FAITH AND HUMILITY

Sitting in a smoky Indian casino in New Mexico with my parents on 2013’s eve, I realized I’d driven over 4,000 miles this holiday season spending time with my family. And I loved every mile of it. I’d drive a million miles more if it meant being present and sober for my family. In November of 2009, I made a life-saving decision to stop using meth. My doctor gave me six months to live if I didn’t. The district attorney also had long-term plans for me if I didn’t stop. And my friends and family gave me one more chance to get sober. So I chose life. It was the hardest and best decision I ever made. The first year of sobriety was a battle, learning a lot about myself and starting the re-education process of how to live without drugs and alcohol. The second year was a tremendous rebuilding year focused on getting back to work and being of service helping fellow addicts in any way I could. I was frequently frustrated and impatient because vestiges of the old me wanted what I wanted when I wanted it. But I only had to look inwardly at my troubles to remember that I put myself in this situation. Gratitude, faith and humility would become my daily tools for keeping me sane. My third year of sobriety was the most profound year yet. I found myself working so much in L.A., both professionally and in my sobriety. I thought things had finally fallen into place and life was going to be perfect. My brother Tony, who I never thought would get married, was finally engaged! But then I hit a brick wall in July 2012 when my twin brother, Albert, died unexpectedly. I was absolutely consumed by pain and 66

FRONTIERSLA.COM

sorrow like I had never known. All I knew was that I needed to be present for my family. If it hadn’t been for groups like the Tweakers Project and the 12-Step programs, I would never have been able to build such a strong foundation of sobriety and have so many friends in my support network. So when things got really tough after my brother died, I had so much love and support coming at me from every direction. That, in turn, helped me to be present for my family as we suffered through the most painful event of our lives. With my support network, I was able to turn my anger from Albert’s death into acceptance and ultimately into gratitude that he was loved and is not suffering anymore. Shortly thereafter, my brother Tony was married and I played saxophone at his wedding reception. A few weeks later, I was sworn in as a city official for the city of West Hollywood. Being present for my family, playing at my brother’s wedding and becoming a city official gave me the greatest rush; certainly nothing I could ever find in a bottle, a pipe or a needle. Thanks to the love and support of all my friends and family, I have been able to maintain my sobriety through good times and bad. I have been able to suit up and show up as needed. I’ve been able to make things happen for myself and others by keeping my faith in God, being humble and absolutely living in daily gratitude for my life today. WEHO FACES TERM LIMITS WITH MEASURE C ON THE BALLOT BY PAULO MURILLO

The hot button on the March 5 ballot for this year’s West Hollywood city election is the possible establishment of term limits for West Hollywood City Councilmembers. Voting yes on Measure C will determine an ordinance that limits councilmembers to serve a three-term maximum. Over 3,000 West Hollywood residents who are registered to vote signed a petition allowing voters to decide if councilmembers should be subject to term limits. The City Council then unanimously voted to approve the measure for voter consideration in late November of 2012. Petitioners needed at least 10 percent of the city’s 23,438 voters. If enacted, newly elected or re-elected councilmem-

bers would begin their first four-year term after this year’s elections. The campaign committee that seeks to establish term limits recently named community activist Lauren Meister as chairwoman for the “Yes on Measure C” campaign committee. Meister has been a West Hollywood resident for the past 20 years. She has served on the West Hollywood Planning Commission and is currently president of the West Hollywood West Residents Association. She’s also a former City Council candidate. “West Hollywood is ready for a fresh, new leadership, but City Hall insiders have created an institutional impediment to change,” Meister stated in

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT TERM LIMITS FOR WEST HOLLYWOOD COUNCILMEMBERS? “Term limits are long overdue. It will bring a good balance and it will heighten interest in what goes on in City Hall. I think there’s a lot of angst about overdevelopment— particularly in Boystown. And a lot of that angst has been caused by the city. It’s time to look at old problems with a new set of eyes and bring in some fresh ideas.” —Steve Martin

“Historically, term limits are necessary to prevent corruption within the system. When we have people who become a ruling group, they become entrenched in the political process. They have favorites; they become more powerful, and as the saying goes, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. This will be placed before the voters, and I believe they will vote in favor of term limits.” —Brian Hamilton

a press release. “A ‘yes’ vote on Measure C will ensure that everyone in our community has an equal opportunity to participate in local government. This will result in new ideas, new energy, a brighter future for West Hollywood,” she added. West Hollywood councilmembers currently serve four-year terms and are elected at large. Four of the five councilmembers have held their seats for over a decade. Mayor Jeffrey Prang has served for 15 years, Mayor Pro Tempore Abbe Land for 20 years, Councilmember John Heilman for 27 years and Councilman John Duran for 11 years. Mayor Jeffrey Prang and Councilmember John Duran face reelection this year.

SPEAK OUT “I support term limits. When you hold any position for over 10 years, you start to get complacent. When this becomes more of a career for you than a service for the public, the energy that should be going for the good of the city can suffer. This used to be a nice little city, but all the charm has been torn down for cold, expensive condos that are impersonal. I miss the old charm.” —Les Kurkendaal

ORANGE COUNTY

THEATRE OUT DEBUTS [TITLE OF SHOW] BY GREG HERNANDEZ Theatre Out, Orange County's gay and lesbian theatre company, has scheduled its first production for 2013, and the title of the show is [title of show]. It's a musical about two guys (both gay!) writing a musical about two guys writing a musical. It delves into the essence of friendship and the creative process. "One guy calls a friend and says, 'Let's write a musical,’ and it blows up in their faces as they collaborate," says director Tito Ortiz. "It gets bigger, and bonds are tested. The two male leads are gay characters, but it's not a love story between them. It's a love story about theater and how they love theater and performing." [title of show] features music and lyrics by Jeff Bowen and a book by Hunter Bell. The musical received a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical in 2009. It premiered at the New York Musical Theater Festival in 2004, then moved off-Broadway in 2006 before beginning a Broadway run in 2008.

"It's a new take on the backstage musical if you will, the same thread of Kiss Me, Kate and A Chorus Line," he says. "You are seeing how these shows get made. It's a nice peek at seeing artists, collaborators, friends and family. It's a really fun piece to watch. You will see four actors, who have great chemistry, sing and dance and will be putting on a great show for you." For Ortiz, Theatre Out has been the perfect space to do satisfying work. Earlier in 2012, he directed the Peanuts parody Dog See God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead. "People talk about the Orange Curtain, but we have a great audience base, and we fill the house a lot of the time," Ortiz says. "We want to bring in good actors and put on good shows—things our audiences want to see." [title of show] will premiere on Jan. 11, 2013, and run through Feb. 23. For tickets and more information, go to theatreout.com.

THE CENTER OC CALLS FOR VOLUNTEERS The Center OC is looking for a group of volunteers to enable it to extend the hours that the front desk of its Santa Ana headquarters is open to the public. Volunteers need to commit for three months to a minimum of one evening shift per week from 5-9 p.m. They will be asked to answer telephones and give referrals. Basic computer skills are required. “It definitely gives you a chance to meet people and to get more involved in the community if you feel a bit dis68

connected," says Darby Restorick, the Center's community liaison specialist. "You will meet new people and add to your social and professional network, and you will be helping people at the same time." While the Center has evening activities going on during the week, the front desk is currently only staffed until 6 p.m. So there is an immediate need for the volunteers. Interested people can contact Restorick at (714) 953-5428 ext. 119 or darby.restorick@thecenteroc.org.

LONG BEACH

LGBT TEENS GATHER FOR THIRD ANNUAL MONSTER BALL BY GREG HERNANDEZ Inspired by Lady Gaga and recent tour, The Center Long Beach will be hosting the third annual Monster Ball on Jan. 19 to benefit its Mentoring Youth Through Empowerment program. Kyle Bullock, youth program manager at the Center, says the ball "allows young LGBTQ and allied youth the chance to dance the night away and meet new friends without fear of judgment or intimidation." “We acknowledge Lady Gaga with the name ‘Monster Ball’ for all that she has done for young people around the world,” Bullock adds. For the event, the Center will be transformed into something of a Gaga wonderland. It will feature dancing with a live DJ, performances, games, a photo booth and a large interactive art display. Refreshments and light snacks will be provided for attendees. Gaga released “Monster” in 2009 as part of her third EP, The Fame Monster. She performed the song as part of her 2009-11 Monster Ball Tour. It was written by Gaga, RedOne and Space Cowboy. Organizers say the Monster Ball is the only LGBTQ-affirming dance in the Greater Long Beach area. Last year it drew more than 100 youth from Long Beach and cities as far away as San Diego and Pasadena.

"The Monster Ball is one of few LGBTQ youth dances in Southern California," Bullock says. The ball is free to all middle and high school youth, ages 13-18. It will take place from 6-10 p.m. at the Center, 2017 E. 4th Street. Valid school ID is required for entry. For more information about the dance or to RSVP, contact Kyle Bullock at (562) 434-4455 ext. 227, or visit MYTECenterLB on Facebook. MYTE, which meets Monday through Friday from 3-7 p.m. at the Center, is a free after-school drop-in program committed to improving the quality of life for LGBTQ youth, ages 13 to 17. It provides a safe, educational and affirming environment for peer interaction, group activities, mentoring and hands-on life skills education to promote health, wellness and positive growth for attendees. The program puts an emphasis on reaching and engaging youths who are experiencing difficulties in school, are at risk of dropping out of school or who have dropped out of school. There is also a focus put on underperforming students with potential who may not be planning to attend college after completing high school. centerlb.org

PALM SPRINGS INT’L FILM FEST KICKS OFF THE NEW YEAR BY JAMES F. MILLS

This year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival features 180 films from 68 countries screening during its 12-day run, which began on Jan. 3 and concludes Jan. 14. Among those 180 films are 14 LGBT-themed films. “Every year, the festival showcases at least a dozen features of keen interest to LGBT audiences,” reports festival director Darryl Macdonald. “[The LGBT films selected], whether narrative features or documentary films, stood out to us because each of them told a meaningful story with characters that dealt with compelling subject matter and did so in a provocative and/or entertaining way.” A special festival guest will be actor Alan Cumming, who is getting Oscar buzz for his starring role in Any Day Now. Cumming will be on-hand for a Q&A following a screening of the film on Saturday, Jan. 12. “We consider ourselves lucky to be able to host [Cumming] during the festival,” says Macdonald. “The Saturday postscreening discussion with Alan will be at

70

FRONTIERSLA.COM

least 40 minutes long. It will be wideranging, encompassing his work in this film, his glorious career in film, onstage and television, and his views on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Any Day Now also screens as part of the festival’s annual Gay! LA “His” on Wednesday, Jan. 9, but without Cumming in attendance due to his work schedule. However, the film’s director Travis Fine will be on-hand for that screening. Below is a summary of some of the festival’s gay-themed movies, most of which screen multiple times. Check the PSIFF website for screening dates and locations. Any Day Now: A period drama about a gay couple fighting bureaucracy and homophobia to become adoptive parents to an abandoned boy in 1970s L.A. Beyond the Hills: Romanian drama about a novice nun whose life is upset by the return of her best friend determined to win her love.

FLASHBACK TO THE ‘50S: THE SKYLARK BY JAMES F. MILLS

The new year is a time for ringing out the old and welcoming in the new. But for one Palm Springs hotel, welcoming the new means celebrating the old. Camp Palm Springs, one of the city’s most authentic mid-century hotels, is returning to its original name—The Skylark. With that name change, the 29room hotel has also been restored to its original 1955 splendor. “It’s been meticulously restored,” explains Reggie Cameron, the Skylark’s director of marketing. “We went to great pains to maintain and restore it to the appearance it had in 1955. It’s about a 90 percent restoration to the way it looked in 1955. With the restoration, it felt appropriate to go back to the original name.” The Skylark’s new owners, Jesse Rhodes and Bryan Gallyot, know a lot about hotels and restoring historic buildings. Rhodes is the man who restored New York’s Plaza Hotel, San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel and San Francisco’s City Hall. Meanwhile, Gallyot has extensive experience in the hospitality industry. “They were looking to do a project together,” reports Cameron. “They wanted something fun, so they chose a small hotel.” With the restoration, the hotel

74

FRONTIERSLA.COM

intends to bring the level of service back to the days when stars like Marilyn Monroe, Esther Williams and Tony Curtis stayed there. A concierge will attend to guests’ needs, including arranging inroom spa treatments. Meanwhile, they’ve gotten a fleet of luxury vehicles, including a classic Rolls Royce, which will pick up guests at the airport. The Skylark also has entertainment planned in the form of pool parties with DJs (Cazwell and Lady Bunny have been booked) and cabaret shows in the lounge (Jimmy James and Jason Brock from The X-Factor are lined up). Located in the Uptown Design District at 1466 N. Palm Canyon Drive, the property has a long history of being a nude resort. Camp Palm Springs was well-known for being clothing-optional. Before that, it was a straight swingers resort/nudist colony called the Monkey House. But with the name change back to the Skylark, the property is no longer clothing-optional. “There are a lot of people who are gay who want to get away who aren’t necessarily interested in being in a nude resort,” says Cameron. “So, we’re no longer clothing-optional. We’re still a gay hotel, but we’re also straight-friendly.” facebook.com/CampPalmSprings

PROFILE

JOEY GLOOR EMPOWERS TRANSFORMATIONAL WORKOUTS BY JAMES F. MILLS For those making New Year’s resolutions about getting in shape, Joey Gloor is a trainer who will definitely help you meet those goals. Gloor has a sculpted body many have ogled over, thanks to his appearances on the covers of virtually every fitness magazine published in the past dozen years. With bulging biceps, tremendous triceps, spectacular pecs and eight-pack abs, he’s also won many bodybuilding awards. Aside from perfecting his own body, he’s trained everyone from celebrities to average joes, with amazing results. “I specialize in dramatic transformations,” says Gloor, who will soon have a fitness and dieting book released. “I offer clients cutting-edge programs for body sculpting, weight loss, muscle building and metabolic reset training [recovery from unhealthy lifestyles], plus personalized diet plans.” Gloor knows firsthand what it takes to transform a person’s body. “At 15 years old, I was the skinny guy weighing 125 pounds who got bullied all the time,” says Gloor, an Illinois native. “I was on vacation in Florida and started working out at Gold’s Gym with my brother. It was either that or watch Golden Girls reruns with my grandmother. Two years later, I had completely transformed my body and was training others.” For people who want further proof of Gloor’s training prowess, catch a

rerun on Logo of the reality series I Used to Be Fat, where he helped a teen named Jordan lose 100 pounds in 90 days. MTV viewers, where the series first aired, voted his episodes as the “most inspirational.” “I was born to teach and inspire,” says Gloor, who taught English in South Central L.A. for four years and also does speaking engagements around the country. “Whether in a classroom, a gym, a college auditorium or on TV, there’s nothing I love more than watching people transform through truth and hope.” Although Gloor is straight, his gay clients love him. “I was bullied through high school and never felt like I fit in anywhere. I searched for acceptance for a long while until I realized it must come from within me. Fitness helped me finally feel good about myself,” he says. “I think that's why I relate so well with the gay community. The world just isn't as kind as it should be, but I'm inspired by the strength of the people I meet.” Gloor does training sessions in private homes and in private gyms in Hollywood. He also has training videos on his website. Mention Frontiers and Gloor will give you a free consultation and a special rate for training sessions.

SEX ED

The Erotic Outer Limits BY JIM LARKINS

Sexual compatibility involves much more than just agreements (or disagreements) over bedroom diversions and perversion preferences. If harmony in nonsexual facets of a relationship is centered on communication, then certainly the same can be said of reaching a sexual accord. Just as many a love connection has met with an untimely end due to communication breakdowns; so, too, have breakups been the result of discord between the sheets. The shock and awe resulting from the discovery of some closeted kinky practice can strike a disastrous blow to an otherwise harmonious relationship. Paraphilias are forms of sexual arousal to objects, situations or individuals that are not part of normative stimulations and that may cause distress or serious problems for the paraphiliac or persons associated with him or her. Whether it is a fetish for dancing with mannequins (agalmatophilia) or donning a diaper (diaper fetishism), the list of paraphilias is long and diverse. Imagine surprising your lover with an early entrance only to find him screwing the vacuum cleaner (mechaphilia) or dressed from head to toe in children’s clothing (pedovestism). For that reason, whether you’re the keeper of Pandora’s Box of sexual secrets or the one who inadvertently discovers the contents therein, there are constructive ways of dealing with erotic unveilings.

FRONTIERS4MEN.COM

First, if you are the clandestine kinkster, keep in mind that no matter how out of the ordinary your preference or perversion might be, it might be a good idea to reveal said treasure before your mate discovers it by accident. If you are the one who has stumbled upon the undisclosed kink, remember that the reason you had to discover it by accident is likely because your partner expected the very same jaw-dropping, awkward response that you gave when the matter was exposed. The one universal idea both you and he should keep in mind is that once the dirty little kinky secret has been flushed from its crawlspace there’s always the chance that it could have been tolerated—if not fully embraced—by both of you anyway. This brings us back to the issue of the value of open communication again. If the true nature of your unconventional sexual penchant were revealed ahead of time and on purpose, you both would have been spared undue drama. Ultimately the shortest route to a harmonious relationship is full disclosure of any and all carnal predilections. If you do this first thing in a relationship, you find out the level of your lover’s tolerance up front and early on. If he then doesn’t accept you unconditionally, you can choose to move on without having made a lengthy investment in the relationship.
